I have spent a lot of time on the hospital battling cancer and kidney failure. The first time I spent 24 days in the hospital my cat was almost unrecognizable. She had stopped eating and cleaning herself. She looked feral even though my father and son spent every day with her. She is dependent on my presence. I wish there was a hospital that allows Cleo to go with me.

That's why EVERY petowner should think over these cases before (!) something happens. It's always necessary to have somebodey who can care for your animal and your animal should know this person!! And you should write down in a testimory what will happen with your animal if you are dead, even if you are healthy.

I cat sat for my neighbor for one week and she made sure to ask if I'd be able to spend 30 minutes morning and night with him to play and snuggle. Ended up staying an hour each most days. This sweet boy was the biggest snuggler. We lived in a very quiet, safe neighborhood so he was indoor/outdoor, so he had means to entertain himself as well.

Our cat is afraid of people so when we went on vacation, we found a cat friendly hotel and took her with us. We leave the Do Not Disturb sign up 24/7 and have a playpen to keep her feeling protected when we do leave, and even cover it up a bit so she can see out the window. Also, she's on thyroid meds so I would be concerned she gets it at her appointed times. We've done this twice and 2nd time was even better as she knew what to expect. When we're there we let her out for lap time, pets, and to sleep with us.

When Bobby-Lee (cat) was about 6 months old I had to do a family emergency to southern California (I lived in Cottonwood Arizona at that time). The next day I came back, he did come out to say hi. He was fine, he was mad but he was ok and snuggled and purred all over me for a little bit. Then he went on his way. When the owners got back they said he was so mad at them 😂. I think majority of cats do get use to their sitter. Especially when they realize that person is the ones caring for them for now. We were newly married, moved 1,200 miles from where I was born and raised (hubby is from a different country), and quickly discovered we had to go back to his home country.
We were gone for 7 days. I had my two precious cats - illegal in the apt but.... - I opened 2 large bags of food, set put several litter boxes, set out water bowls, and left the kitchen tap running.
They were so happy and excited to see me return.
As I said, this was 38 years ago. Now I have a trusted sitter for my now 15 house cats. My old lady Beagle gets boarded and pampered.
AND I make my own rawfed for my cats (cooked for dog). I make and freeze and I'm sure to make several extras.

I'm sorry but I don't think you should board your elderly cat. Usually with boarding they but it in a cage and it gets checked on a few times a days and that's it. Your car would be a lot happier at home in the environment she is accustomed to with the other cats and cat sitter to keep her company. Definitely let it get pampered/groomed because as cats get older they can't clean themselves well enough.
In the end this is just my opinion based on my experience working in the boarding and grooming business, do what you think is best. I'm glad u take care of the kitties.

Thank you so much for stressing this! 💓
I think many times we are guilty of thinking our kitty babies only want us when it's at their convenience (🙋‍♀️I've been guilty of this in the past as well), but I hadn't realized how much that they are so used to a certain routine until I adopted my cat 6 months ago.
I hadn't been a cat owner in years and this little sweetheart was just barely old enough to be away from momma kitty. He is so used to certain little details just like you mentioned...the blinds being opened every morning...watching TV with me in the early evening. I work from home and only leave once a week to do some shopping but the few hours that I am away, the minute I walk through the door...his reaction is so heartwarming and just precious. I couldn't imagine leaving him home alone for more than that. Bless his heart...he'd literally be lost.

“A few times a day” is prohibitively expensive for most ordinary people. Once a day is over 30 dollars a pop. Three times a day might be up to 100 dollars a day. That said, I would never leave my cats even over a weekend without a sitter. What if some medical issue came up? And if I have a senior cat with health issues, I board them at the all-cat vet, where they get loving attention and careful scrutiny. They can tell if my cat is uncomfortable or not eating and do something about it. All my sitters have keys and my credit card on file, so if god forbid I’m stuck in a blizzard and can’t get home, someone is still taking care of them.
So no, I don’t dump them with food and water. One cat is bound to scarf it all down at once and then barf it back up.

This depends on your cat too! After all, I know plenty of people that would just fill up food and water and leave their dogs for the weekend. This is because they’re ranch dogs! They’re free fed all the time and there’s no change to their schedule. If your cat is free fed anyways, putting out some extra food will be fine. They’ll miss you, but it’s okay.
Please note I’m a pet sitter, and I’ve met plenty of different cats! Some need me to come by three times a day and they’re still sad, some couldn’t care less if I come by every three days! I’m obviously not a cat behaviorist though, and I have so much respect and love for this man. I sent my partner all these videos when he first got his cat. I’m sure it’s healthier for them to have sitters come and maintain their schedule.

    • @mariag.8242
      @mariag.8242 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

They show their social nature differently. You’ll notice they’re always in the same room as you but acting as if it’s just a coincidence. They definitely need snuggles and pets from their human and are better off with one or more other cats. However, they are also more independent than dogs in the sense of having their own opinions about when to have snuggles, which rules are worth obeying and which are obvious human foolishness, and who or what is acceptable in their home. This is not the same thing as not caring about their people or missing them terribly when they’re away. Cats grieve when someone they love disappears, and it’s really painful to see.

The food was being eaten, litter used etc. so she knew she was there, but never saw her. I went with her for one visit, since we were on our way to lunch, and less than a minute of me just sitting still, the kitty appeared, briefly sniffed me, and decided I was ok. I got rubbed on and purring ensued. My friend was SO annoyed lol. Cats choose their humans, so don't give up. There's the right person for your furkids too.

Bring the catsitter over to have a cup of coffee and learn the details of your cat’s routine. Having them sit still and be chill with their human helps them understand the person is trustworthy. Have the person sit down and give them a few treats and maybe a few pets if the cat is willing, or try to have them come at a mealtime to feed her. Food sources are more trusted than people who just grab them. One good catsitter understood about being available but not pushy. She just sat and read; each cat invited herself to sit in her lap 😊 A good sitter means when I come home my cats are calm but really happy to see me.

My cat was diagnosed with kitty IBS this year. He’s on anti-nausea meds, a steroid every other day, and supplements for digestive support-all on the advice of his vet. Sometimes he doesn’t feel good and we have to coax him to eat, which means a pet sitter is not really an option. So he’s become a travel cat. Whenever we go home to visit family, he comes with us, and he seems to really love exploring my mom’s house and being with us. He doesn’t like the 2.5 hour car ride, but I can tell he has less anxiety being with us wherever we go than being home alone with a cat sitter. He just knows that as long as the three of us are together, he’s safe and will be well cared for. ❤
