11 Survival Tips from a Former Secret Agent

  • A former secret agent is sharing his advice on how to get through any critical situation. It's always fascinating to see how easily CIA agents in movies can survive any extreme situation. Well, they’re even cooler and more resilient in real life.
    So even if you're the safest driver ever, it wouldn’t hurt to know what to do in case of an accident. When you’re driving, you should keep your hands at 9-and-3, not 10-and-2 as they used to say. Unfortunately, dog attacks are also quite common these days. A mixture of water and ammonia, using a can of pressurized air, like those sprayable air dusters for cleaning keyboards or pepper spray or another animal’s urine will save you. If you ever find yourself in a burning building, there's a chance that you'll need to knock the door down to escape or help others. The way you see it done in the movies couldn't be more wrong! Running towards it and throwing your whole body against it can leave you with a dislocated shoulder or even broken bones.
    In the moment, panic often takes over, but try to suppress it and follow some important rules. To protect yourself during a shooting, you need to find a good cover. If you’ve got a gun pointed at you, it's best to behave extremely carefully to minimize any possible risks of getting seriously hurt. If a serious explosion is about to go off, your actions should be quick and precise. Finding refuge is the most important thing. In case you get locked in the trunk of a car, you can try to open the trunk's lock latch. Another option is to try to escape through the folding back seat.
    If the snow on the ground is really thick and you see a couple of evergreen trees nearby, then you’ve found the perfect place to build yourself a refuge to wait out the storm and warm up a bit.

    SUMMARY
    -When you’re driving, you should keep your hands at 9-and-3, not 10-and-2 as they used to say. If you’re a passenger in the back seat, during a collision, put your hands on the back of your head, press your forehead against the seat in front of you, and keep your knees bent at a 90° angle.
    -A mixture of water and ammonia is one of the best ways to scare away aggressive dogs. The most effective choice is pepper spray or another animal’s urine.
    -A precise and powerful enough kick with your heel will knock out any lock.
    -You can put rubber doorstops all around the door’s crevices or do it like in the movies: just put a bunch of heavy objects in front of the door.
    -To protect yourself during a shooting, you need to find a good cover. Remember that things like clipboards and hardcover books can stop bullets, so you can use them as a bulletproof vest.
    -If somebody is pointing a gun at your back and has ordered you to walk ahead, raise your arms and slow down so that the gun is pressed right up against your back. Then, turn around quickly, bring one arm down so that it traps the gun under your armpit, and use your other arm to attack the gunman.
    -Finding refuge is the most important thing. Cross your legs, open your mouth, and cover your ears with your hands.
    -Find the emergency pull located on the inside of the trunk, and the trunk will pop open.
    -To free your legs, stand up straight and point your toes out to make a “V” with your feet. Then, jump up and as you land, spread your knees really fast. If your hands are tied behind your back, you need to get them in front of you. Once that's done, press them together tightly and then quickly pull them apart.
    -Don't panic, take deep breaths in and quick breaths out. If you're swimming on your belly, move by bending your knees, straightening them back again, and keeping your back arched so that your head stays above water.
    -Find the thickest evergreen tree with low hanging branches and dig a hole in the snow along the tree trunk. Then pack the snow on the “walls” of your hideaway as densely as you can.
    -Some of the most popular contents in special agents' bags include a key to handcuffs, a flashlight, a gun, a pen, a compass, a razor blade, a pocket knife, a mouthguard, and some lockpicks.

    Next time a dog attacks me, I'll make sure to fight it off with the things I carry in my pocket that the common person does: A bottle filled with water/ammonia, the left sleeve of a V neck T shirt, a single potato chip, a keyboard key from a computer used in a high school computer classroom, a single pack of ketchup, the corner of the lid of a jar of Norwegian jelly specifically made in 1996, and a piece of the 17th root of a Redwood tree counted counterclockwise from the 90 degree angle of the sun side facing the tree at 3:00PM respectively.

I say if you have the know how or not try something with all your might. Never go out without a fight.

      To be fair, the gunpoint tip was true to an extent. Systema and other hand-to-weapon combat styles usually improve on that small move but with the gun pressed on your back you have the leverage and you can rotate it to your side faster than they can react and squeeze the trigger.

    The steering wheel "tip" struck me as odd, too. Back in ancient times when I was taught to drive, the hand positions were "10 and 2". This was before airbags were a thing. If your hands were at 10 and 2 when the airbag deployed, both arms would be flung up into the roof, snapping both wrists and rendering you unable to use your hands for important things like unbuckling your seatbelt and/or opening the door so you could get out. Having your hands at "9 and 3" is a LITTLE better, but your hands are then directly to the sides of the steering wheel airbag and your left hand (in countries where the driver sits on the left) would get flung into the left door panel, again snapping the wrist and making egress difficult. The actual recommendation these days is have your hands at "8 and 4". That way if the airbag deploys, both arms are flung down into the seat - greatly reducing the chance for a fracture.
    The recommendation to keep your thumbs on the outside of the wheel is a valid suggestion, as thumbs don't stand a chance on the inside of the wheel if the airbag deploys.

    Dog coming at me? No problem, I'll use that chemistry set I always carry in my pocket to ward it off, getting shot at? I'll just work through the extreme panic I'm in and be able to think of exactly where to hide. When I was in girl scouts we learned how to tie knots and practiced by tying one another to trees. No mater who tied me up, or how tight/hard I was tied I all ways got out within seconds. My wrists are so flexible i can turn them a full 360, and bend them to my wrists. This means that I could always reach the knot and untie it.

      I actually did that during an accident, in that last moment as I saw a car about to t-bone me and I crossed my arms and pulled myself to the steering wheel, so my body hit my arms, instead of my head hitting the windscreen (no airbag), and it worked. Unfortunately my head hit the B pillar (beside drivers seat back) but that left me with nothing more than a bad headache, most of the momentum was spent. Bit sore, but safe.

    kicking a door down is not a good idea period unless its the exit. if you must kick a door down, follow these tips:
    1. if you see smoke coming in and out from underneath the door, find a alternate exit. this is because its a sign the fire has already engulfed that portion of the building your in to the point if you let out, it sends a big fireball at you and starts spreading to the portion where your dead corpse is.
    2. feel the doorknob to see if its hot. if it is, stay away and find a alternate exit.
    and finally, 3. do not run or walk in thick smoke where the level of oxygen is low. crawl to the lowest point where possible till you are either out of the area with thick smoke, or out of the building your in. you need to conserve your bodys oxygen level as much as possible, and the less energy you burn, the less oxygen you need.

    #1 is a perfect way to suffocate in a snow well. NEVER go near the deep snow next to a tree trunk! This area under a tree called a snow well has looser and softer snow than normal, and you will drown like in quicksand, especially with bulky snow gear. If you've ever gone skiing or snowboarding you've probably already received this warning. Terrible survival tip, and makes me wonder about the rest.

    • @c4i3ooze51
      @c4i3ooze51 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I know a few of them are very wrong, breaking duct tape around your hands should be done by putting your arms in a triangle shape in front of you then thrusting hard into your stomach or using a shoe lace to saw at the tape if you need to. And for busting a door it's better to kick right under the lock not on the lock and kicking the lock will not bust down a door opening outwards.

    • @abigbaldniga6485
      @abigbaldniga6485 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paper Mage snow under a tree is not like quicksand whatsoever. First the snow underneath a big tree would be fluffier and easier to form into a shelter and 2nd if you suffocate in snow ( other than in an avalanche or something like that) you are mentally deficient

    • @victorsuciu3794
      @victorsuciu3794 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Have you ever been caught in a snow well? I have, and my ski instructor had to pull me out. The NSAA (National Ski Area Association) has a whole page about the dangers of tree wells, and their warning signs literally say "SNOW SUFFOCATION HAZARD".
      Here's the link to the page: www.nsaa.org/safety-programs/tree-well-deep-snow-safety/
      Also, your assertion that only retards suffocate in snow is completely false. Not only is snow suffocation a well known safety hazard known as SIS (Snow Immersion Suffocation), there are statistics that demonstrate the dangers of deep snow. The following passage is from the Utah Avalanche Center:
      "How do people die when buried in avalanche debris?
      The good news is that even dense avalanche debris is about 60-70 percent air, but that's not the problem. People die because their carbon dioxide builds up in the snow around their mouth and they quickly die from carbon dioxide poisoning. Statistics show that 93 percent of avalanche victims can be recovered alive if they are dug out within the first 15 minutes, but then the numbers drop catastrophically. After 45 minutes, only 20-30 percent are still alive and after two hours almost no one is alive. In other words, you don't have much time."
      Original link: utahavalanchecenter.org/faq
      Again, this is assuming that you landed in one of the larger air pockets that make up 60-70 percent of avalanche debris. Tree well snow is just solid powder all the way through, so unless you manage to get an area around your mouth cleared you will suffocate as quickly as in water. This is supported by the NSAA's SIS information sheet:
      "In the last 10 years, there have been 41 fatalities resulting from SIS incidents occurring at U.S. ski areas
      (see chart below), according to a study conducted by the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and
      Paul Baugher, a leading snow safety researcher, ski patroller, and director of the Northwest Avalanche
      Institute. During this 10-year span, there are on average four SIS fatalities at U.S. ski areas per season.
      The six SIS fatalities last season was an increase from four SIS fatalities during the 2015-16 season.
      According to Baugher, who is the leading expert on SIS incidents in the United States, a victim can die
      as quickly as if drowning in water."
      Original link: www.nsaa.org/media/308757/SIS_Snow_Immersion_Fact_Sheet_2017.pdf
      Tree wells are a real hazard if you aren't careful, and this is supported by the facts. Trying to build a shelter in one is just idiotic.

    • @victorsuciu3794
      @victorsuciu3794 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's because ski resort runs are carefully maintained and clearly marked, and these resorts prohibit people from going off trail and might even fine or ban them if they disobey. All the places I've been to revoke your season pass at a minimum if you go off-roading. There is a very strong incentive to not go off into the wilderness where these suffocations happen, which is why there so few deaths. The point is that the risk statistic is so small because almost nobody actually puts themselves at risk in the first place. The issue is that the survival tip in question was for wilderness survival and not groomed ski resort survival, where 1.) the conditions are much riskier than those on maintained trails, and 2.) it is asking you to actively put yourself in a risky position.
      Why don't you educate yourself on this instead of just spewing out snarky one-liners.

    • @abigbaldniga6485
      @abigbaldniga6485 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paper Mage the survival tip is for people who get themselves into situations where they would need them. If you’re too scared to make a hole next to a tree to survive the night and reduce you’re exposure to the harsh elements in cold climate, then what are you doing outside in the first place. Plus it’s not like you’re going to go from 1 ft of snow to a whopping 10 ft of snow in 1 step. if the snow gets too deep the make a path. Have some logical thinking skills and don’t just go jumping head first into a pile of snow you know nothing about.

    To whoever reads this, you have a higher chance of hurting yourself doing most of the things the video suggests, rather than just mind your business and act natural if something happens.
    Most of the times you will instinctively react and protect yourself, depending of your nature, physique, time, place, being alone or not and whats in stake. Don't try to be someone you are not, or seen in the movies.

    For those curious about other tips please read 100 Deadly Skills by Clint Emerson. He is the one who wrote this all--using comic-like pictures in his book.

      Destroyer 2.0 I have read it, and I have it. No it's not, or at least they took the least practical stuff from it. Plus the joke is that the cartoons and how it's explained looks a lot like WikiHow, and the practicality or relatableness to civilians is as much as any other Buzzfeed articles.
      What would have been helpful than these shown on the video is counter surveillance, how to avoid fights, how to know when someone is following you, how to prevent being robbed, what items to carry, what the eyes do when someone is lying

    Great suggestions! I need to research to see if these suggestions are safe and true. And most importantly don’t create more problems.

    3:17 only works in USA, you cant kick in a door in Sweden. You would have to take down the entire door frame, maybe even the wall. There is a reason why the police needs to inform the fire department so they can bring specialised tools to break into main doors.

      I live in New York and almost every apartment I been in has strong thick steal doors with a steel door frame and a complicated lock and I been in luxury building with no criminals and its still the case. This is the law in apartment buildings at least in New York just in case there's a fire so the fire does not spread, the only problem is if you are in a high floor apartment theirs a fire and the door does not work. You are out of luck unless the fire dept sets up one of those giant balloons so you can jump out the window. Luckily it will take a pretty hot fire to break those doors in the first place.

      Use a car jack. Hold it horizontally, halfway up the door. It will push the jamb away from the latch bolt to allow entry.
      Just don't try to kick in the door.
