Q: Is it necessary to remove the cooler as well? A: No, it is not necessary. I removed mine as it was faulty and leaking coolant. If you choose to keep yours, make sure you fit both blanking plates at the same connections as shown to maintain neutral gas pressure in the cooler- if you only fit one blanking plate at EGR valve, the gasses from the exhaust manifold could cause a high pressure buildup within the cooler and it is not good.

Great tutorial. Just a couple of bits I’d personally do differently. Don’t use that exhaust paste on the blanking plate. That’ll dry up and eventually bits of that dry hard paste will make its way into the turbo making potential damage. Just use a blanking gasket instead without the paste. Also don’t use jubilee clips on coolant pipes. There’s good reason why you’d want a spring clamp, they expand on hot temperatures unlike the jubilee clamps, so the pipe can potentially cut into the edges of the jubilee clamps from expanding over time.

Hi, you’ve same engine as myself. If you remove the EGR the light will stay on as the engine sensors will receive data they don’t expect (zero flow etc) though the car will drive fine. If you want to get rid of the light and warning you should get it mapped out of the ECU
Appreciate! No, no coolant leaks. Had a small exhaust flange leak but that was due to me applying the exhaust paste wrong, all sorted and working well now.
@@Rimlax123 Hi! Due to heat and pressure from exhaust gasses the blanking plate would bend and create a small gap through which the exhaust paste would blow out. I fixed this by cutting off the original cooler flange and fitting it on the top of the blanking plate to keep it fully flat and firmly pressed.

A random question. could you possibly get more power/clean air into the engine if you was to somehow link the EGR intake to the air box? or a custom air intake with the cooler providing some type of 'cold air' thing? If done right...could that be done?
The egr is used when you don't need power, so cruising along at a steady speed, some exhaust is pumped in to save fuel. When you accelerate, the egr is shut off as you need clean combustion to produce power
@@davidoff59 uhhh no. The egr is for reducing oxides of nitrogen or NOS emissions. That is it. It actually causes the vehicle to consume more fuel but burn less

Hey so with leaving egr in place and just removing return pipe and cooler you don’t need to map egr out? Cause I was thinking on removing mine but egr also but need to map out so eml doesn’t stay on.
If you are blocking the gas flow the computer will automatically detect not enough gas is going to the egr and it will throw a fault. Which means you are best to code it out, but you can drive the car with eml on no problem.
Hi great video, my EGR cooler has just sprung a leak so I’m considering doing what you have done. My question is where did you get you blanking kit? Also are there any electrical connectors going into the EGR cooler I need to worry about ? Thank you
Glad to help. The blanking kit was ordered from eBay and only cost a few pounds. The EGR is vacuum operated and so has no electrical connectors, you should simply blank the vacuum pipe.
Adam G - thank you. Really simple to take off the cooler? And is it just a case of connecting the two large pipes together and the two small ones? ......will I need to get any coding done ?
@@johnt217 basically yes. However I would suggest to cut off the exhaust flange from your broken cooler and fit it on the top of the blanking plate. The issue is that the plate is thin and may buckle under high temperature thus creating an exhaust blow. A flange fitted on the top will prevent that. Do the coding if you want the check engine light to go away, otherwise the driving is unaffected
Adam G - appreciate the tip. This happened to yours? Re there not thicker or better blanking plates available? Also what size are the two pipe connectors ?
@@johnt217 yeah, experienced some blow initially and reapplied the paste but it blew again under harder acceleration. The blanking plates are sold in standard thickness unfortunately. From the top of my head the pipes are roughly 20mm and 8mm, I could be wrong though.
Really depends on the tester but according to the law and testing guidelines, a clearly missing dpf is a failure. Some guys buy faulty dpfs and remove the insides of the actual filter, making it straight-through.
Great video. Thank you. My egr on has been a nightmare. Bought a cheap copy and it turns out the egr valve didn't move. Tha actuating fork rotated freely on the spindle and left the valve permanently mmanely shut, almost like a delete tbh. I fitted a second hand oem egr valve and now the car coughs at low speeds and hoofs out clouds of black smoke on acceleration. After long drives the engine glow plug light comes on and goes into limp mode. The eml is pretty much on pemamantly. My question is if I delete the egr do I need to reinstate it for MOT emissions tests? I'm assuming once I delete the egr as you describe then all of my acceleration, limp mode and smoking issues will be gone. Your video makes the job of fixing this issue a real possibility. Cheers.
I think the reason why your car coughs and spits out thick smoke is because the egr lets in too much exhaust gas. If you blank it, the engine will draw nothing but clean air. Your eml will stay on as the engine will register a fault however the driving shouldnt be affected. If youre in UK, as far as i know, only petrol cars are being tested for emissions so you should be grand. Cheers
Small ones were 8mm? If I remember correctly. Could be 10mm. They slide off a metal sleeve and you can conect the other rubber tube to the metal sleeve and create a loop.
Hi Adam, can you make a video on your timing belt and when the engine is hot? I have a Problem with noise after changing and you have the same engine. How km the belt have and in what position the tansioner is on cold / hot? Thanx
Hi, the noise could be a worn tensioner, however it'd be best to check with a mechanic because if something goes wrong the timing you could wreck your cyl head. My car has 380,000km and the belt was changed 4 years ago.
Hi I’ve recently bought a 58 plate Audi A3 Tdi. It’s having a problem with loosing coolant. There is no mixing of oil and coolant and no visual leaks of coolant. I am yet to pressure test for leaks. Who ever owner the car previously has bypassed the egr by simply adding a piece of pipe between the two hoses like you did at 5:30. So the egr is still fitted just bypassed. Is it at all possible that this is causing problems with the coolant and loosing coolant from there. After reading this out loud I think I may be wrong but any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
There are two sets of coolant lines going to the cooler- the primaries (ones I bypassed at 5:30) and secondaries, the thinner ones. It's possible the coolant could either leak into the cooler via the secondary lines and then get sucked in with the intake air and burned up, or in the worst case scenario, enter the cylinder via a bad head gasket. If your car is idling and you open the coolant reservoir and it's bubbling, it's most likely the head gasket, if not, could be the cooler.
Adam G Adam G hiya mate thank you for replying. I realised after commenting I was a bit mistaken. So the egr is still fitted and hasn’t been touched, the cooler is also fitted aswell however that is what has been bypassed (by the thick pipes at 5:30) the coolant doesn’t seek to bubble and doesn’t seem to be mixing into the oil, so to me that says is not the head gasket. Could you advise me please what next step you would take. Thank you again for your help
@@JLOOOOOOOOOOO do you know if your egr has been mapped out? If so, since the cooler is bypassed, you could get rid of it altogether and put the blanking plates in. If it's not mapped out, it leads me to think the previous owner suspected a leak and done some tinkering. How often does the coolant need topping up?
Adam G not too sure if it’s been mapped out tbh, bought it quite cheap with not a lot of information. I’ve just realised aswell I forogt to mention in my original comment my engine is slightly different to this it is a 1.9 TDI if that makes much difference? It’s abit strange the coolant seems the be abit hit and miss. Sometimes it goes down very slowly and needs topping up just a tiny bit. Other times like one Saturday, the coolant light comes on then when I checked it the expansion tank was completely dry and it took about 2 litres if not more.
I have pressure (bubbles in coolant system) when engine is hot. But I don't have white smoke from exhaust on first start or anytime in long drive. It is losing water little bit from cooling system. What can be problem? Car is golf plus 2.0 TDI 2005 16V BKD
Guys, any tips would be helpful, I have a remapped Audi A4 B7 1.9 TDI Sedan from 115 to 145 hp, but I have a laggy turbo and reduced power, checked all vacuum lines, tandem pump replaced, new intercooler as well, MAP and MAF sensor, new turbo, anyway, let's get straight to the point of my question... I have blanked my EGR on the exhaust and at the EGR valve, but I did NOT put any sealant or silicone on the plate on the exhaust, so could it be causing the exhaust gasses to escape and lose the pressure so it cannot spool the turbo the way it should?
Either a gasket or some form of seal is recommended as I even had to reinforce my original blanking plates due to pressure blowing out the sealant! Fully could be the issue
Hi Adam great video I’m getting low coolant and white smoke and black water dripping from the exhaust please could you help is that a failed egr cooler thanks a million
It could be a failed egr cooler where the coolant leaks internally and gets burned, however I would also suggest having your head gasket checked. Cheers
Absolutely no downside if your cooler is working as it should (mine leaked). The coolant will simply circulate around it and return to the main system- and it's fine to leave it as it is.
@@dariolinoo the exhaust blanking plate goes between the manifold outlet and the cooler inlet, yes. And since no gas is entering the cooler, the pipe can stay (provided you also blank the intake side)
Hi mate, search for a "TDi blanking plate" on eBay, the egr flanges are all standard size so the same plate that fits an A3 will fit a Q7, A6, Passat, Leon etc.
It shouldn't. A car may run rough and not accelerate as well but it should still start. One thing that could prevent it from starting, however, would be a shot anti-shudder valve which is mated to the egr. Mine once jammed shut and would not allow any air into the engine.
Adam G awesome thanks buddy, top man. The misses car has just started with non start and glow plug light staying illuminated problem that and I can’t here the fuel pump prime I’ve Read a lot of different things it “could” be.. what a headache..
Hello again mate. I'm leaving my cooler in, but how do I remove it to put the plate onto the exhaust manifold please? Also, how do I take the pipe out that goes to the inlet manifold? I've got the pipes out but it won't budge. Thanks
If you're leaving the cooler in, the antifreeze pipes should be flexible enough to allow you to unbolt the cooler and slide it upwards off the exhaust flange without removing them. The intake pipe (I assume you mean the one right before the EGR) is held by a thin Ω-shaped metal clip which comes off with the help of a flathead- the pipe should then slide out
@@KOTalk no problem at all chap!! See when buying the plates they usually come in pairs of two. If you only fit the outlet, the exhaust gasses are going to pressurise the inside of the cooler and remember that flow is powerful enough to spool a turbo. Same goes for only blanking the exhaust, you'll have the charged inlet air trapped in the cooler
A dumb question coming up: why do you do this? What is the purpose? I know little to nothing about engines, more than that I need to replace my EGR valve somehow haha
Some people do it for tuning purposes, it's one of the steps. You get only clean outside air into the engine, no recirculated exhaust. You 100% need to modify ECU map for this to be 100% legit. Others do it because the EGR Cooler (the one in the back of the engine) is very expensive when it goes bad. Maybe for you 400-500 eur for the EGR cooler is ok, but these cars are getting old and cheap.
Hello Adam G im doing everting like you, after a while in drive my check engine is light up, do you have same problem and how to solve this.... Thanks for video
Hi, check engine light comes on due to "insufficient egr flow" error. The engine will work 100% as normal but you need to visit a tuner and have them remap the egr out of ecu to make the check engine light disappear. Cheers
@@Adam_G because of egr valve problems i made the same thing, delete it wih map and blanked with plates. Now my car is struggling to regen DPF. I dont know why. Engine is 1.6 tdi CAY. I have no idea that EGR has a purpose with regeneration?
Q: Is it necessary to remove the cooler as well?
A: No, it is not necessary. I removed mine as it was faulty and leaking coolant. If you choose to keep yours, make sure you fit both blanking plates at the same connections as shown to maintain neutral gas pressure in the cooler- if you only fit one blanking plate at EGR valve, the gasses from the exhaust manifold could cause a high pressure buildup within the cooler and it is not good.

Brilliant video mate I've got the mk5 golf pd140 and my engine light is on and it says emissions workshop. So if I delete the egr will the light go off? Also with the light and msg coming on am I right in thinking the egr unit is nackad so would I have to change that? And if I did change that would the light go off? Thanks mate
Hi, you’ve same engine as myself. If you remove the EGR the light will stay on as the engine sensors will receive data they don’t expect (zero flow etc) though the car will drive fine. If you want to get rid of the light and warning you should get it mapped out of the ECU
@@Adam_G hi thanks mate I changed the egr and I'm wondering what did u do with the lil vacuum pipe?
@@smokeyjoe4248 blanked it using a screw and a jubilee clip

Do you have check engine light after this? How to decode the EGR from the compute to avoid check engine light?
I did indeed, my friend coded it out using a remap computer
What about the catalytic converter, should it be removed with the EGR as well or is there no need for that???
Hi, the cat was left in place whereas the EGR was later mapped out with software
Hi Adam,
Would I need to blank off the EGR cooler side as well as the valve side if keeping the cooler? Thanks
Hi, ideally yes, this will prevent pressure buildup from either side of the cooler
Banging vid. Any leaks as of yet?
Appreciate! No, no coolant leaks. Had a small exhaust flange leak but that was due to me applying the exhaust paste wrong, all sorted and working well now.
@@Adam_G Hello, and what was wrong with than exhaust paste?
@@Rimlax123 Hi! Due to heat and pressure from exhaust gasses the blanking plate would bend and create a small gap through which the exhaust paste would blow out. I fixed this by cutting off the original cooler flange and fitting it on the top of the blanking plate to keep it fully flat and firmly pressed.
Adam G thanks's Adam
Do you have to reprogram the ECU when you blank out the EGR?
Yes
@@danielsstipnieks2836 no

Is this the bkd engine you did this on?
Very informative video. Thanks
Thank you!
A random question. could you possibly get more power/clean air into the engine if you was to somehow link the EGR intake to the air box? or a custom air intake with the cooler providing some type of 'cold air' thing? If done right...could that be done?
no and no
Never hurts to ask questions like that. That is how new things are engineered. Its innovative.
But the vacuum tube of the auger will return to its place after deletion ❤
Do you not have a fault code for egr insufficient flow now or not? I appreciate the video
I did, although I already had this code before, which is what prompted me to blank the EGR. It can be fixed by removing the EGR via the tuning cable.
@@Adam_G there's the catch
Hey Adam. Can I just check the other 2 small cooler pipes just need joined together yeah ? Cheers 🍻
Yep, they need connected so that the coolant can cycle through as normal 👍🏽
@@Adam_G cheers Adam on my Octavia mk2, 1 of the 2 small pipes can unclip from the engine and the other can go in it’s place to bypass the cooler. I was just checking. Thanks for taking the time to reply. And thanks fir doing your vid pal 👍
But if EML is triggered it may take engine into limp mode with limited rpm and performance.
How manny hp? Is it get whit a blend egr?
Hi
I was wondering if I'll remove the dpf filter, my car will still pass the MOT test or not.
Thanks!
Really depends on the tester but according to the law and testing guidelines, a clearly missing dpf is a failure. Some guys buy faulty dpfs and remove the insides of the actual filter, making it straight-through.
Will have to tune it afterwards?
Cheers
Hi mate you don't know a size for the small lines do you? Do you have to buy a tee piece for them?
Small ones were 8mm? If I remember correctly. Could be 10mm. They slide off a metal sleeve and you can conect the other rubber tube to the metal sleeve and create a loop.
Hi Adam, Did radio ask for code after battery removing?
No, the radio communicates to the ECU and if it recognises it is still in the same car, it doesn't ask for the code

Hi Adam,
can you make a video on your timing belt and when the engine is hot?
I have a Problem with noise after changing and you have the same engine.
How km the belt have and in what position the tansioner is on cold / hot?

Hi, the noise could be a worn tensioner, however it'd be best to check with a mechanic because if something goes wrong the timing you could wreck your cyl head. My car has 380,000km and the belt was changed 4 years ago.
@@Adam_G thx

Hi mate do you have to blank it off from both sides. What happens if you only block the front one by the radiator.
Hi, you're risking an internal pressure buildup, hence blocking off at both ends.
Hi Adam great video I’m getting low coolant and white smoke and black water dripping from the exhaust please could you help is that a failed egr cooler thanks a million
It could be a failed egr cooler where the coolant leaks internally and gets burned, however I would also suggest having your head gasket checked. Cheers
Hey - I have a 08 golf tdi 170 will this work on mine too? Just two blanking plates and the 90 degree pipe to connect inlet/outlet
Hi, should be good as the block is pretty much identical. These blanking plates work for the vast majority of TDi engine EGR flanges.
For what purpose should I blank my EGR on SEAT Toledo MKII BCB motor / same as GOLF 4 / Skoda Fabia
If you have a check engine light, fault codes with EGR, rough idle or abnormally low power
Salve Adam una informazione dopo che si fa questa modifica, rimane la spia accesa di errore ??
Ciao, that's correct, you'll have a check engine light
What you think if I leave egr cooler inside, just blanking it and removing pipe, is there any downside to that?
Absolutely no downside if your cooler is working as it should (mine leaked). The coolant will simply circulate around it and return to the main system- and it's fine to leave it as it is.
So I should put blanking plate just before cooler, right?
Also can I keep the pipe in that case with just installing blanking plates on each side?
@@dariolinoo the exhaust blanking plate goes between the manifold outlet and the cooler inlet, yes. And since no gas is entering the cooler, the pipe can stay (provided you also blank the intake side)
Those two plates are not same size, are they?
@@dariolinoo for me they were, as Audi used identical-sized flanges for the entire system.

Hi, do you have a link where I can buy the blanking plates? Thanks
Hi sorry no link but simply search “2.0TDi EGR blanking plates” it’s a universal design for all engines really
Did you get any performance difference after you putted this in?
No noticeable performance difference. However if your egr is clogged you should get a much smoother idle and perhaps a small increase in performance
Hello Adam, do you know if a dodgy EGR valve would prevent the car from starting?
It shouldn't. A car may run rough and not accelerate as well but it should still start. One thing that could prevent it from starting, however, would be a shot anti-shudder valve which is mated to the egr. Mine once jammed shut and would not allow any air into the engine.

The intake pipe (I assume you mean the one right before the EGR) is held by a thin Ω-shaped metal clip which comes off with the help of a flathead- the pipe should then slide out
@@Adam_G thank you so much mate! :D
@@Adam_G other videos say to put the blanking plate on the cooler where the pipe was. But I'll follow your suggestion
@@Adam_G thanks bud. Got the plates, I've done the egr side. Just trying to get the cooler off
A dumb question coming up: why do you do this? What is the purpose? I know little to nothing about engines, more than that I need to replace my EGR valve somehow haha
Some people do it for tuning purposes, it's one of the steps. You get only clean outside air into the engine, no recirculated exhaust. You 100% need to modify ECU map for this to be 100% legit.
Others do it because the EGR Cooler (the one in the back of the engine) is very expensive when it goes bad. Maybe for you 400-500 eur for the EGR cooler is ok, but these cars are getting old and cheap.
