DylanDude Playing Pokemon in Japanese, what really bothered me was the tiny amount of text that fit into the boxes, and that on the Pokemart, it says "shop" rather than "mart". Shop is the way we say it in Ireland, but it was super disorientating! XD
@No one You know Most of Mario’s voice lines (like “So long, King Bowser!”) were not included in the original Japanese version (which the 64DD version is based on), although they were later added to the Shindou edition.
Ya but the disks were still significantly smaller than CDs still and I think carts eventually became the same size as DD disks but I could be wrong on the last part.
But then again, CD's still had tons more storage at lower costs then the Disk Drive and the cartridge. In terms or retro gaming, I'd rather have CD based games
I'm pretty sure that they also used the pitch changes for the red coins in the Japanese Super Mario 64 Shindoh Edition (1997). The date of the US standard drive and the fact that this is an earlier version of the game than Shindoh Edition tells me that the 64DD was not only in development before the console's launch, it was also intended as a fall-back if the decision to use carts backfired. They probably didn't settle on the cart format as the standard format until late in the console's development.
Mario Kaper Not exactly because it's talking about spelling Romanization and not strictly pronunciation, but that's what I was thinking when I wrote it. ;) David Sheff's "Game Over: History of Nintendo" used the alternative spelling/romanization for Shigeru Miyamoto through the entire book.
We appreciate your support! Watching, commenting, liking - pretty much everything you're doing - is the best way to get TH-cam to promote us more so more people can enjoy! :)
When you've been in development long enough, you know that there is always all these things you want to add to the game but don't make it in for the final build. So when they do a 2nd release (international), there might be some minor improvements that they were allowed to sneak in.
Gotta say, those less mono and (presumably) less compressed disk versions of the audio really hit differently. People have done "uncompressed" versions of OSTs before. I wonder if this variant of the SM64 OST with the wider dynamic range is available somewhere.
William Stephens Probably improved microcode. While some companies such as factor 5 and Rare eventually wrote entirely custom graphics microcode, Nintendo also created and supplied improved versions of the standard microcode over time that was faster, and maybe just better in general. If they used an improved audio driver, it stands to reason they'd use an improved graphics driver too, if they had it.
There isn't anything better visually, unfortunately. We just captured this using an N64 that was modded for RGB out. So the colors are richer/more saturated (probably too saturated - I actually had to tone them down a bit in editing). Thank you for watching! :) -Tony
I actually thought this was composite and your capture card was messing with the hue value. If the color is anywhere near this garish in person you should check the amp or whatever was used for the mod- it looks like it's missing necessary resistors or capacitors on the R, G, and B lines.
You are correct. Believe it or not I almost bought a N64 with 50+ cartridge games and the DD with 8 DD games at a yard sale from a retired Nintendo Game Developer in St. George, Utah for $50.00. My dumb ass thought "nah I can just download an emulator and have all of these games". I thought wrong. I remember receiving a catalog from Nintendo Power that they were taking preorders three weeks before launch for the 64 DD at $129.99 back in 1998, so I thought they actually released the 64DD. So when I came across the N64DD at a yardsale I didn't think it was a big deal but now knowing that it was never released I should of bought it.
Because he was at least nice enough to test my dumper for blue disks back then and gave it to me for research. But still asked me to not share the dumps.
It's fascinating there's loading times in the middle of stages. That tells you a lot about the old cartridge vs CD argument. Cartridges have fast (compared to CD) random access. Eg, doesn't matter which part of the cartridge you try and read. But if there are loading times in the middle of stages, it is clear that the stages are too large to fit into RAM. And doesn't the 64DD require the RAM expansion pak as well? That implies a single Super Mario 64 stage is too large to fit in 8 megabytes of RAM. ... Shows you that it is quite true, what they claimed. A number of n64 games would have been difficult if not impossible to pull off on a CD based version of the console.
Can someone post the entire SM64 soundtrack from the disk version? It sounds way better It's also cool how the loading times are mid-game, like the ones in Valve games (source engine) instead of loading screens. They really make this feel like you're actually there since there is no blatant loading screen
@@TheDeathOfLucifer what does it have to do the sound quality with the video quality? Either you play the game on composite or component cables the audio is stereo.

Remember back when mario 64 was first came out, and they were showing off the beta. There was like 6 levels. They were using a cartridge to show the game off. It was a gray cartridge with the Nintendo 64 logo on it. I think it was at spaceworld 96 or 97 that they showed it off at. You guys should try to get a copy of the original beta cartridge
Check out our playlist for a more in depth response, but in short: it was mostly storage and read-write capability. More storage did allow for a larger variety of assets in-game but it didnt improve graphics, per se. It did allow for better audio though.
Hey guys really enjoyed your video and information you give about the game. Never knew there was a dd version of the game. you just got a new subscriber.
Finally, I see real footage of that rare version of the game. The DD's loading times for the time isn't too bad. Definitely quicker than the PS1 or Sega Saturn, but the original cartridge still beats it with ease. But no wonder why the add-on was a flop.
One of the biggest differences in sound really is Inside Peach's Castle... Yet you didn't let us listen to it to compare it, like it's way more echo-y and actually sounds like you're listening to the music in a long or huge hallway.
