Kawasaki Versys X300 2017 - 2021 Dunlop Trailmax Mission Tire install and what you need to know

  • I just installed the Dunlap Trailmax Mission tires on my X300. There is a lot of reasons that these tires are what I chose (mid priced, true 50/50 tires, grip off road, quiet and grip on road, longevity well exceeds most other tire options, etc.) It was a tough install. I was going to do it myself and even bought the tire changing hand tools. After watching many other TH-cam videos on the Trailmax Mission swap I got cold feet. I contacted a mobile tire service race shop and came over and we spent the better part of 3 hours beating the snot out of ourselves using a manual tire changer (clamps onto the rim) which helped and we had 4 hands free to get these tires on the X300 rims. The back was very difficult and without the use of 2 large "C" clamps to squeeze the beads together on one side and spoon the other onto the rim we never would have made it happen. These Trailmax Mission tires are so stiff you cannot squeeze the two beads together by hand to keep the tire in the center drop part of the rims. The manual tire changer was the No Mar brand and aided only in holding the rim and could not be used to get the beads onto the rear rim. The tire was too stiff. What we could have used was what is called a valve stem puller which I didn't know existed until after the job was done. Another thing that would have helped was heating up the tires as the day we did the swap it only got into the 60s degrees. Well - the job got done - swollen hands and fingers. The X300 has one of the smallest (narrowest) rear tires with the 130 size which appears to be a issue with how narrow the rim is and the rock solid tire with the free air beads only a couple of inches apart. The TH-cam videos that show the tires going on easier are the big bikes with much wider rims and tire sizes like 150 which gives you a lot more room to work with. So, if you're thinking about putting the Trailmax Mission tires on the X300 get help, heat up the tire to near the melting point (just kidding), buy the valve stem puller tool, use 2 large "C" clamps and don't use anything less than a mounted manual tire changer to hold the rim because two of you will be maxing out the tire levers with both hands.

      I keep seeing bike owners state that the miles expected from the Trailmax Mission tires has exceeded expectations. I like the X300 tilts into the corners. With warming trends starting here I'll be getting the X300 out more. Logged 84 miles tonight and was a perfect weather ride.

    All worth the troubles, these are great tires. We did two sets two weekends in January 2020 with everything at room temperature (65-70) in my garage. First set took nearly 4 hours and both of us have experience just using too much muscle getting these on and fronts are not as bad but a challenge. He stayed with tunes and I used the outex kit to make mine tubeless. So the following weekend I mounted mine solo using c-clamps in a short amount of time probably 90 mins and some raw knuckles. Another issue I had with the tubeless was seating the bead, even with straps getting the beads seated was obnoxious! Congrats hope you're enjoying those tires I am and have another set ready to go😎🇺🇸

      The Trialmax Mission tires have a lot of positive reviews and big TH-cam channels that have compared a lot of tires (like Chapparral Motosport) tried their best to find the weak area of performance and there isn't any. Glad you got your Dunlops mounted. A pain but now we are good for a long time.

      @@ImSaIty I now have 5,900 miles on the Trailmax Mission tires and they show only minor wear. Other X300 owners are now surpassing 10,000 miles on their set of Trailmax Mission tires and still going. One owner is at over 12,000 miles and claims they still have many more miles to go. It would be reasonable for most motorcycles to exceed 10,000. The ride is very good with little noise. After 5,000 miles my tires did tick up just a little more noise but it is covered up with exhaust noise. My X300 is very quiet with the 15-tooth rubber bumpered front sprocket and the oversized custom windshield that block 95% of wind noise and 95% of helmet buffeting. It is quiet. I do plan on making videos on the current state of all the accessories on my X300. That will probably be out soon and probably be multiple parts. One of the videos I watch the owner of the venture bike had his Trailmax Mission tire pick up and nail and lost all air. This tire is so rigid that he road it 40 km (26miles) to the next bike shop to get the tire fixed and there was no problem at all. The tire stayed on the rim and there was no damage to the rim or tire. That was another selling point for me. If I get a flat I still get to ride home or to a shop. That sounds crazy but these tires are so stiff I believe it as they may as well be called "Run Flat" tires.

First up - a better bracket to hold my phone and GoPro so I don't have so much vibration. The purchased bracket that I have now is cut from thin aluminum so I will step up to 1/2" billet. Thank you for your question.
      These Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires are essentially run flat tires. Especially the rear where most flat tires seem to accrue. Three X300 owners have shared their experiences with flat rear tires, and they all were able to keep riding with no air in the rear. The tires stayed on the bead and the longest distance was 40 km (26miles) to get home or to a shop for help. I've gone one step further and added a TPMS system (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) to my X300 for early warning so, when the pressure starts to drop below 29 psi the TPMS system starts an audible beeping and the display flashes to get my attention. The TPMS system gives you more time to get help. The TPMS also provide the temperature at the valve stem for more data. An under inflated tire will generate more heat. From having the TPMS on my X300 for about a year or so the front tire stays at 2 to 3 degrees warmer than ambient, and the rear goes as high as 12 to 15 degrees over ambient. It I see anything beyond that I should investigate what is going on. Again, early warning something isn't right. I would recommend a easy to install TPMS system. I have a video on what I bought and the installation. It's super easy. Check out my video here is the link: th-cam.com/video/lV1a2M3I0bY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=trekOCLVone

      I just installed a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. (See my video on the SYKIK system) Starting cold I currently have 31 psi front and 32 psi rear. After riding for an hour, the front is 32 psi and rear is 35 psi. Also, the TPMS provides the temperatures of each tire so, front starts out at ambient (today was mid 70s) 72 F and rear 72 F and after the hour of riding the front rises to 78 F and rear rises to 90 F. This is because the rear is such a heavy weight the heat doesn't bleed off as much while riding and the front is getting more air flow. There is a theory that there should be a 10% rise in psi between cold and hot which is the correct balance where under inflated would mean more heat and faster wear and over inflated reduces contact patch and therefore less grip but get more mileage out of the tire. My front is probably too high as the X300 spec is 28 psi. I will probably bring my front down from 31 to 28 psi. The rear is right on the spec of 32 psi and gains the 10% when hot to 35 psi. I will leave it as it is. I would recommend the TMPS SYKIK system if you like data to easily keep an eye on the tires and can warn you early on if there is a problem developing. My 5,000-mile road test update! The Trailmax Mission set are showing a little bit of wear. Maybe down 10 percent. So, with 5,000 miles on the set as of this week (Labor Day 2023) this is going to be a long-term relationship with the Dunlop set. I like these so much I bought a backup set of Trailmax Mission tires. These tires are out of stock a lot of times throughout the year. Right now the front is available from many sources, but the back Trailmax Mission tire is out of stock except for Seirra BMW shop in Sparks NV. I ordered on rear 130/80-17 from Seirra BMW last year in August and it finally arrived in November, but it is free shipping and $169. It is worth the wait. I cannot find anywhere that states the MAX hot psi. Just the cold psi. I was running at 28/32 cold. The back tire was over 40 and the front was almost at 38 when hot. I stopped to let air out cause I literally was able to tell the tires had more pressure. I was concerned the tubes couldn't handle that extra pressure. Has this happened to you?

    • @trekOCLVone
      @trekOCLVone  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wolfshield2638 I do see an increase in tire pressure and hence an increase in PSI. The TPMS gives me both PSI and temperature at the valve / rim. The front and rear tires cold I have currently at 33 PSI. There is a rule of 10% for tires to change PSI by 10% and that means starting with my front tire it stays pretty cool and close to ambient temperature. So, the front with the ambient temp being 72 may rise only 3 degrees and the PSI will rise only 1 to 2 PSI. This is below the 10% rule, so it is good to go. The rear has much more mass and much less air flow being that is in the back sheltered by the bike. So, the rear will for a 72-degree day the rear will rise to around 86 to 92 degrees resulting in the PSI to go from 33 PSI cold to 36 to 37 hot. That is close to the 10% change rule and is normal behavior. My TPMS is something that gives real time data and I like that and knowing both PSI and temperature of each tire is a great early warning system if something starts to go wrong. It is not mentioned but do you have the Trailmax Mission tires on your X300? If so, going from 32 PSI cold to 40 PSI tells me you must have a TPMS system also and with a gain of 8 PSI that is way above the 10% rule. Is your bike loaded with a lot of weight? Temperature rise is going to be affected with the amount of load added to the bike. I think the Trailmax Mission tires have written on them a max temperature of 40 PSI and that would be cold PSI. If I change my cold PSI on the rear to 36 the temperature rise should be less with the tire flexing less. Also, what type of tubes are you running in the front and rear. If you have replaced the stock IRC tubes with heavy duty tubes that will hold / build more heat and that will show up as a higher PSI gain and therefore temperature rise. I would stay with stock/ regular tubes for that reason.

      Is this a coincidence or what. Today I just bought another 130/80-17 rear tire for my Versys X300. They are working out great. I've now accumulated 3200 miles on this first set of Trailmax Mission tires. The tires show almost zero wear. The rear is very hard to find (still), and I found a great deal, so I bought one for the shelf. I'll need it next year or right after that as I expect to have near 10000 miles on them by 2024. At $169 I couldn't resist for the 130/80-17. If you need a 130/80-17, just ask and I'll provide where I found mine and free shipping. The front 100/90-19 can be found at many different sources but not the rear. The Trialmax Mission tires are very quiet and no vibration or buzzing. The tread is very good for all types of terrain that I've put them through. So bottom line - I believe I made the correct choice in tires for the Versys X300. I've seen many bike owners opt for these and the feedback is excellent. I see bike owners mentioning the weight of these tires however, I've noticed no change from the lighter stock IRC tires. The Versys X300 isn't a super bike and worrying about acceleration makes no sense and with little effort the X300 will exceed any speed limit in this state with no problem. I've worked at keeping my X300 very quiet with these tires, fireproof foam in the skid plate and a custom windshield the stopped 95% of all wind noise and all helmet buffeting. Thanks for your question.

      @@trekOCLVone so stock sizes. Doing lap of Australia on my versys 300. At Darwin, very hard to find tyres, had to go with road tyre on rear.

      I've seen that technique and it seems to work. But that is one of two of the toughest challenges - the other is getting the tube valve into the rim. These tires are so stiff they just don't move. But eventually the job gets done.
