This is such a great video and so informative, thank you very much! I just got back from a trip to Tahiti where I was enticed and mesmerized by the gorgeous black pearls there but never knew about the Sea of Cortez pearls. They are just as gorgeous, if not more!
The pearls that are grown on the shell are usually known as "Mabe Pearls" or "Half-Pearls", they are the "descendants" of the natural "Blister Pearls". I am glad you enjoyed the video, and I have another one about "Mabe Pearl" formation here as well, be sure to check it out.
Unfortunately this is a short-lived oyster and cannot be reseeded, but once the animal is harvested its shell and meat can be fully utilized, so there is no waste.
+S Ali These pearls glow red under along wave UV lamp...they are the only ones to do this. You also receive a certificate but the UV lamp trick gives you additional insurance :) Check out my UV light video right here on TH-cam.

The Sea of Cortez was probably not the first place -and this is never mentioned in the video- because modern day Humans were not in the Americas until they came across the Bering Strait and slowly trickled down to our area. But if this Natural Gem -the Pearl- that needs no polishing, processing and mining was not the first please do tell me since I would love to know...and this is not sarcasm: I would like to have this information since I am writing a book and this would be important...and if you could kindly produce the source (book) it would be much appreciated. Douglas McLaurin Hi Douglas. Actually the video mentions pearl was the first gem used by human. The archaeological finding mostly refer to agate and turquoise and jade as oldest gems. Agate was very easy to find on land and was even used for making instruments. There is a mine in Iran which is said was being used for producing turquoise for over 5000 years. But pearl is rather difficult and a bit sophisticated to be found therefore it is not even logical it could have been the first gem. Shells would have been probably used before pearl even.

Shell has probably been used just as long as pearls and they do not require cutting, faceting, polishing...they are perfect just the way they come out and everything else requires a form of processing, techniques that early humans required thousands of years to develop. Does this make any sense?

It is well known that there are more carats of good diamond in the world than good turquoise. Also the real imperial jade is considered one of the most expensive (if not the most) gems in the world. But still this is not a good benchmark as in each period and area different gems had higher value...
What do you call those pearls which form inside the shell? I'm unfamiliar with the word; can you spell it for me? I have a wonderful artisan crafted bracelet made from that type of pearl (grey and black) and I often wondered how they were formed. Great video. Thank you. :)

Then again, overproduction means you have large production areas with many oysters and you have a negative impact on the ecosystem. So, yes we could possibly grow them like poultry...but where is the romance in this? Rarity is also a good thing...makes the Gem special and not "another chicken drumstick". Don't you agree?
+mellowyellow Not inflating them. Our prices are roughly the pearl prices of the early 2000's, the difference is that we produce 4 kilos of pearls and not 1,200 metric tons! Hence the prices are different. Even if we increased production to 10 kilos the price would not be very different: it would still be the smallest production of cultured pearls in the world. Sorry if you don't like this information or you cannot afford these pearls...but you always have the option of choosing other products. This is not as if this is a product needed for survival or to fight a disease or save lives...it is a Pearl, a Gem and an object of Beauty, but it does not save lives nor people die because they don't own one.

And just this last Monday we had a meeting with our investors and they want us to increase the production to 50 thousand pearls per years and we said: "Well yes! By all means WE WILL TRY!" It is easier said than done: every year we have more hurricanes, the "El Niño" changes weather patterns, increases water temperature and affects mortality rates in our oysters, breeding is also affected. So...in the end I am a God of sorts, able of commanding the world's weather and all sorts of fluctuations. Sure. Start praying because I will soon look in your general direction and have an iceberg grow under your very feet ;) The way I SEE IT is that we work WITH Nature, we THANK Nature for all it has given us (to judge if it is too much or too little has no sense) and we do the BEST we can with that. Any other way would require control and subjugation of Nature...a power that we do not have. And I really believe we are all part of the solution to the world's problems, but we should all start with the person in the mirror and avoid pointing the finger elsewhere, allowing Ego to take control. +PauIa Deen Well, this is done to destroy all bad pearls and keep them from reaching the market. The Tahitian Pearl industry was not wise enough to do this and it caused prices to plummet. We will not do as the Tahitians.
Cortez Pearls? Prices may run from $2 thousand US dollars to around $120 thousand. Depends on their quality, rarity, the size and shape of the pearls and their grade and unusual colors.
