  • South Sea pearls are the largest cultured-pearl variety, sometimes reaching over 20 millimeters in diameter. The Pinctada maxima oyster can take up to five years to produce a single South Sea pearl, whereas more common freshwater oysters can take as little as three months and create dozens of pearls. This long cultivation process makes South Sea pearls rarer - and more expensive. A single South Sea pearl can cost $1,500, and a necklace can reach over $200,000. So, how are these pearls grown? And what makes them so expensive?

    This is really interesting to me. I work with pearls as a designer but there is a lot that I learned in this video. For example, I didn't realize that pearls could be reshaped and shined like that. And I didn't realize that the nucleus was as big as it is. I wonder if I could learn to shape and buff some of my pearls that have flaws.

    • @ericolens3
      @ericolens3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Id say practice with low grade pearls.
      The thing I'm concerned about is the outer layer being shaven. Is that lacquer or natural oils that give pearls their luster?
      I bought my neice one of the cheaper pearl necklaces under $100.

    • @anyascelticcreations
      @anyascelticcreations ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@ericolens3 Yeah, definitely I would try on a low grade pearl first. I always thought that the shine was from an unblemished outer layer of nacre. And that it couldn't be fixed in any way. But theoretically that nacre goes all the way to the nucleus. So theoretically I could polish a scratched or misshapened pearl the same way I polish metal. Though my equipment is different than theirs.

      Culturing involves surgically opening each oyster shell and inserting an irritant in the oyster. Freshwater pearls are cultured by inserting another oyster’s mantle tissue. Saltwater pearls have beads and another oyster’s mollusk tissue inserted. Fewer than half of the oysters may survive this process.
      Cultivators further stress the oysters by suspending them in water in a cage, washing their shells, moving them around in different waters, and raising and lowering their cages to subject them to changing water temperatures.
      After the pearls are extracted from the oysters, one-third of oysters are “recycled” and put through the culturing process again. The others are killed and discarded

    Also, can't they produce their own nuclei in Indonesia? I assume they're just rounded mussel shell, right? Or, does having the more expensive Japanese nuclei contribute to their appeal for some people? Either way, I can definitely see why these are so expensive.

      @@cyantn1634 actually the vast majority of pearls including these are not natural, because they contain a fake core. for the cheapest freshwater pearls, I think they use plastic balls that only get a millimeter or two of nacre coating, and in this case they use mussel shells, which are a similar material to oyster pearls, but still fake filler material and made round and big to give the pearls a big headstart in growing big and round. until a few hundred years ago, all pearls were natural, grown around randomly implanted grains of sand or shell. natural pearls only occur in a small percentage of oysters, fewer per oyster, they take a lot longer to reach the same size because their original core is very small, and they are much less likely to be round due to the lack of a round core as a starting point and the lack of manual turning of the oyster. nowadays, pearls are checked I think with x-rays to show wether they are made of concentric layers of nacre all the way to the center and thus natural, in which case they are far more expensive due to their rarity. plastic cores are certainly easy to identify, whereas these mussel shell cores may be an attempt to fool testing equipment with a similar density to oyster nacre. though I think there probably are ways to identify the lack of concentric layering. but at least the weight of the pearl will be convincing, as opposed to pearls with plastic cores.

    Very informative piece. I never thought the irritants/nuclei were that size or perfectly shaped. Beautiful Indonesian scenery. I wonder how the price would change when it is a naturally occurring pearl. What happens to oysters after the pearl is harvested? Is climate change and warmer waters affecting the quality and quantity of cultured pearls?

      Nuclei are often sourced from shells of sacrificed mussels, so they can cut the nuclei to certain specifications (obviously limited by thickness of shell from sacrificed mussel). It's a pretty wasteful, but quick and relatively consistent process

    • @whitepouch0904
      @whitepouch0904 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, climate change, hot temperature makes the water acidic due to release of ions so the shells not just from mollusk but also other sea species like corals have thinner calcium framework.

    • @nancy4980
      @nancy4980 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@whitepouch0904 You know, now that you you state this, I have noticed that the seashells that I have found on the beach close to a high traffic water area are thin, smaller, not too colorful, and easily breakable. I'm attributing this to the high water pollution levels. I am assuming water pollution plays a role as well. Thank you for answering. Take care.

    They probably have a strict import license to stop this type of farming from affecting the environment. I could be wrong but monoculture farming is usually not a good thing.

      It's Indonesia, they don't really care about the environment. They rank low on the Environment Performance Index. Not as good as Thailand but better than China.
      It's all about the money. He just needs to find the right government official and as "How much."

      It's true that monoculture farming generally create more environmental impact but I don't think it's applicable in this case. In this case they provide their own early culture (the one that involves chemical substances) in a lab and not in open water, reproduce their own oyster, and let the later culture happens naturally.

      western people are very good at talking about environmental damage, monoculture, deforestation for oil palm, especially in developing countries.
      but they pretend to forget or do not really know how their environment is, many arid lands are not greened. they also do monoculture farming, (perhaps monoculture farming there doesn't need to destroy the forest).
      and they also pretended to forget who had colonized other countries and caused mischief.

    You can buy real pearls from fishermen in the Philippines for 20-30$(that's what I think I paid in 2016/2017) for a full necklace and they are real . But of course they have irregular shapes and you have to buy directly from them..I didn't ask for the prices recently

Person I think said they were seawater pearls and was even selling some pinctada shells where the pearls apparently grew but if course I cannot know for sure and also I'm not an expert's I can only say they were not fake.. I paid for each necklace probably 20$ which in the Philippines is not cheap anyway. They were not regular pearls that's for sure , I mean the pearls were not perfectly round or at least not all of them

      We do have South Sea pearl farms in the Philippines, it's mainly on two areas of the country which originally produce it... Sulu and Palawan... Whilst the culture of Pearl harvesting is older in Sulu, they produce pearls on a smaller scale compared to Palawan, Palawan on the other hand is more successful of the two because of Government backing, and protection and having it on a larger scale... As a side note, the Badjao tribe of Sulu are also known for being the source of natural South Sea Pearls in the Philippines

    LESSONS from PEARLS: Once a university student from Kuwait brought me a pearl after her return from the Middle East. Yet surprisingly, she did not know how pearls were made. I shared with her how constant irritation made such a beautiful thing, and how difficulties in our lives can do the same.
    An even more meaningful story is of "the pearl of great price," one of the fascinating parables which won Jesus such popularity. In it a pearl is found by a merchant. To get it he sells everything that he has.
    There are two interpretations to the parable:
    One is that when we see the beauty of living in tune with God and people, we would exchange everything we have to be part of it.
    The other is that God loves us so much, we are like a pearl that he gives his best to save. He came to earth to be with and suffer with us. He died for our wrongs, and his resurrection gives us hope of eternal life - the best gift of all!
