Questioner: My name is Laxmi, I am a journalist. Now the second question is; Muslim men are allowed to marry 4-5 times, I think. And they don’t require their wife’s permission, you know, the first wife’s permission to marry. I mean correct me if I am wrong to marry more number of times. So I actually don’t see any logic in this because I believe its one man…one woman that’s the institution of marriage. So please clarify. Thank you.
Dr Zakir Naik: Coming to your second question, in Islam men marry 4 times, 5 times and they don’t ask permission from the first wife, why? As far as Polygyny is concerned a man having more than one wife, Islam is the only religion and Qur’an in the only religious scripture on the face of the earth which says ‘marry only one’. There is no religious scripture besides the Qur’an, I am a student of comparative religion which says marry only one. There’s no verse in the Bible, no verse in the Bhagvad Geeta, no verse in the Veda which says marry only one except the Qur’an. If you read the Hindu scriptures in Ramaayan the father of Shri Ram how many wives did he have? How many wives?
Questioner: More than one.
Dr. Zakir: More than one, 3 wives. Fine… Shri Krishan according to Mahabharata how many wives did he have?

Dr. Zakir: not unlimited, you don’t know your scripture well.
Questioner: No.
Dr. Zakir: Did he have 4 wives? No.
Questioner: I have no idea.
Dr. Zakir: Not 4, not 100, not 1,000, 16,108 wives. How many wives he had? 16,108 so why can’t we Muslims have 4? What’s the problem? When Shri Krishna can have 16,108 wives why can’t we have 4?
Further if you read the Vishnu Purana ch no. 24 verse no. 1 it says
“A Brahmin can have up to 4 wives”
If you read the Jewish scriptures it gives you permission to have as many wives as you wish. If you read the Christian Bible it gives you permission to as many wives as you wish. If you read the Bible, Abraham had 3 wives. Solomon, how many wives did he have? He had 700 wives. It is later on, the Church has put a ban that Christian should marry only one, not the Bible. It is the Jewish community married more than one wife. It was in 1950 that Chief Rabbi, Passed the Synoid, that Jews should marry only one. So it is the Rabbi not the Jewish scriptures. And according to Hindu scriptures you can marry as many as you wish it is the Indian Government, in 1954 passed a law called the Hindu Special Marriage Act. Hindu Special Marriage Act which says Hindu should marry only one. It is not the religious scriptures, it is not Baghvad Geeta, it is not Ramaayan, it is not Mahabharata, it is not Veda it is the Indian penal court.
The Indian government which has passed a law in 1954 that Hindus should marry only one but according to the statistics of the status of the women in Islam.
If you read the government documents on page no. 66, 67 it says that Muslims do polygamous marriages, you know what’s the percentage in India? 4.3% How much? In India 4.3 % of the Muslim men do polygamous marriages. The statistics between 1951 to 1961 Hindus how many? 5.06, .7% more than the Muslims in India, according to the Indian government even though it is prohibited according to the Indian law yet they do more polygamous marriages than the…than the Muslims. Why?
Now let’s analyze what does the Qur’an say, Qur’an says in Surah Nisa Ch. 4 verse no. 3

You take about sunnah, start with your fard also Muslim brothers ignore the sunnah of fasting on mondays and Thursdays, they ignore the sunnah of praying 2 Rakats before fair, they forget that Tahajjud is a sunnah. The only sunnah they remember is to marry 4 wives... as Muslims we must fear Allah swt and not change the deen to suit our needs, unless we want Allah punishment to come upon us,

Allah said
Verily, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and he forbids immorality and bad conduct and transgression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

And Allah says
O you who believe, be persistently standing firm for Allah as witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just, for that is nearer to righteousness. Fear Allah, for Allah is aware of what you do.
Surat Al-Ma’idah 5:8
“A man who has two wives and who is completely inclined to one and who ignores the other emerges with one side of his body paralysed in the Day of Judgment.” (Hadith; Ibn Majah, Nikah, 47; Mishkat al-masabih, 2/196)
A woman does not consent to share her husband with another woman under normal circumstances, and no woman would like to marry a married man unless she has to.
It is a necessity of belief that polygamy is right. However, to believe it does not necessarily mean for a woman to consent to the second wife and approve it.
No believer father would like his son-in-law to marry a second, third or fourth woman along with his daughter. The jealous nature of the woman and the affection of the father for his daughter disapproves this. As a matter of fact, the daughter of our beloved Prophet, Sayyidah Fatima, objected to her husband, Ali’s marrying of a second woman. If it weren’t permissible to object, Sayyidah Fatima, who was brought up by our Prophet, would not have objected. The Messenger of Allah would have warned her and ordered her to consent to her husband’s wish. However, it did not take place like that. On the contrary, the Messenger of Allah, who saw that his daughter was worried, asked Ali to give up his wish and told him that if he did not give it up, he could marry another woman after divorcing Sayyidah Fatima. He did not consent to Ali’s second marriage to depress his daughter.
By considering that act of the Messenger of Allah, it can be stated that Muslim daughters and fathers may object to the second marriage of their husband or son-in-law.

What is the reasoning behind it? Knowing the reason makes a big impact and helps reveal the intentions. I just need Zakir to tell me the “why” for his religion and i can make a decision on which to follow after that. I don’t need him to dissect what i know, just answer the question to enlighten me. We don’t ask questions to get scrutinized about what believe, we ask questions to learn. I like how well-knowledged he is about all the statistics on males and females, and how he differentiated between different religions and how they are intertwined with the law in India. However, I completely disagree with this, he did not answer the question at all, instead pointed at every other religion. It did not clarify at all why muslim men are allowed to marry 4 wives exactly, should have referenced all the right reasons as to why from the Quran and from the prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him). Instead, he made it look like women need to be protected even in our modern world (women do not need to get married to live a fulfilled life, it is not a NEED). Also, what bothered me the most and got me so frustrated is that WOMEN ARE NOT PUBLIC "PROPERTY" IF THEY AREN'T MARRIED!!! I am so shocked at how accepting the comments are of this, and how the whole entire audience was praising what he has mentioned (especially the women). I a muslim women who takes pride in my religion and find islam so beautiful and wholesome, and am always happy to learn even more about islam. I hope to get married one day and already highly appreciate how supportive Islam is at the idea of marriage (sunnat al hayah) and was extremely frustrated to hear this being said. It especially did because it is allowing an ongoing misrepresentation on women's perception in Islam, not helping put Islam in a positive light for both faith seeking muslims and non-muslims.

@@jolayemiayobami6989 no, it's not best. Maybe a contrast might help. Here in United States, in Euro American communities, men have affairs or they endlessly date without taking responsibility. I've given up on white men because the ones I've known take no responsibility for their decisions. No financial support. No emotional support. Just endless pushing for sex right away in dating and then demands for freedom to date others. It's a mess. The idea of a man being responsible, even if not full time, when he chooses to include a woman in his life feels so attractive compared to all my "freedom" to be nothing more than a bootie call. I don't need money, or a lot of attention. I've learned to meet my own needs without a man. So any attention from an honorable one feels like gravy.

For me, I have no kids, can give financially to support, and. I'm used to meeting my own needs, so the idea isn't as ugly to me as ive been brought up to believe. It's much more dignified than dating.

Actually In Islam marring a second or third or forth wife is not that easy.
There are some requirements you have to meet. I remember some like, You have to be Just, Be physically fit, have to have enough money and so on.
Many doesn't dare marrying a second wife because of the first requirement. Because treating two wifes the exactly same and being just is not easy. If you cant do it you’ll be severely punished.

It is a total disrespect for women , how come a men sleep with other women in the same house, and women have to accept it . Women are treated like animals , there is no argue about it.
There is many sunnah t to do, but these men today only remember to marry 4 women and forget about other things. The man doesn't need to marry another woman under normal circumstances, a woman doesn't need to marry a married man if she doesn't have to. A true believer, a father-in-law wouldn't like his daughter in law to marry his son with other wives. The judgment day is probably near, they're doing so much wrong and showing a bad side of Islam. Allah wanted the men to marry the women who lost their men during war and these things to spare them. But these days, they do whatever they want and I feel sorry for those women, especially the brainwashed ones who think that their man is doing great stuff and being okay with that.
Majority of non Muslim men I know have affair with other women behind the back of their wives. Is it OK. In many cases wives know about it but are afraid to object for the fear of divorce. Are these wives being treated as humans or animals?

According to order of Allah under special circumstances, our Prophet married multiple wives. She kept them happy.
Fateema RA objected when she came to know that Ali RA can wants to have second wife.
He told Ali RA not to marry again when he saw Fateema, RA being heartbroken. Thus the marriage was cancelled.

Because he is wrong. He says no other religion promotes monogamy. He says the "Quran is the only scripture that says marry only one" which is a contradiction if the Quran allows to marry four. The Bible is clear on one man and one woman in marriage. The Bible is also clear that the two are equal, even describing husband and wife as "one flesh." Dr. Naik needs to do a more complete reading of his Bible and other religions before talking about them because his knowledge, like the knowledge of his followers, is incomplete. Here this will help:
1 Corinthians 7:2 "But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband."

The key word in these passages is "wife" and not "wives" and the equality is clearly defined. If a man has several wives, clearly no wife is his equal and no woman is equal as they are not allowed to have four husbands. Naik is not a high IQ. He is under-educated on the topic he is discussing. He's justifying sexism in the Quran.

In it he ordered those present, and through them all those Muslims who were to come later, to be respectful and kind towards women. He said:
"Fear Allah regarding women. Verily you have married them with the trust of Allah, and made their bodies lawful with the word of Allah. You have got (rights) over them, and they have got (rights) over you in respect of their food and clothing according to your means."
In Islam a woman is a completely independent personality. She can make any contract or bequest in her own name. She is entitled to inherit in her position as mother, as wife, as sister and as daughter. She has perfect liberty to choose her husband. The pagan society of pre-Islamic Arabia had an irrational prejudice against their female children whom they used to bury alive. Islam raised the status of women, and made them equal with men in most rulings. So women, like men, are commanded to believe in Allah and to worship Him. And women are made equal to men in terms of reward in the Hereafter. Women have the right to express themselves, to give sincere advice, to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, and to call people to Allah. Women have the right to own property, to buy and sell, to inherit, to give charity and to give gifts. It is not permissible for anyone to take a woman’s wealth without her consent. Unmarried woman = public property? So it means married woman = private property. Woman is property of man whether married or unmarried. Logic?
