Cap Switches and the Mysterious Yellow Switch - B3313 0.9

- Also a lot of MIPS for some reason. Well, there is a reason, but it's complicated.
I think the next video will probably show where the Red Stars are and give some explanation on them, unless there's another subject people would rather have me cover. I'm open to suggestions.

The influence of the Yellow Switch! It sounds so sinister as does the room it's in. What a wild game!
It's cool how the game has all these hidden inner workings to it. The glitch effect when you hit the yellow switch is neat, I wonder how that's done.

Late reply but you can also wait 35 seconds on the title screen to activate "act1" mode, which also causes the metal cap switch to appear
So as it turns out, I missed a star that contradicts something I said in this video. On Floor 3B, there's a room full of colored boxes. Toad gives you a star there, but I somehow never noticed that there was a breakable box in the room that contains another star, and that one happens to have the ID of OW-2. As I explained when talking about the yellow switch, this is a Star ID that I thought was only obtainable by getting lucky when hitting the switch, but apparently you can just collect it without any special requirements. So that increases the total (as far as I'm aware currently) to 178 collectable without cheats and without the yellow switch, and the yellow switch total remains 180.
Also, side note, in one of the text edits I put in the video, I said that 0.7 had a pressable yellow switch in "Vanish Cap Under the Water", which isn't a thing. I meant to say "Metal Cap Under the Water", aka, the old Metal Cap Switch level that I called "Drenched Trenches" in this video.
can you activate yellow switch in 0.9 with out pressing it like getting a certain star or something?

It seems like the Yellow Switch can make purple coins spawn 100% of the time from certain enemies & all boxes that would have contained coins.

This was really cool, I liked the explanation and could actually follow along a bit with what you were saying. The fact that even you don't know what everything does is still crazy with how much you've gone through the game, it's insane the work that was put into this.

this comment is related to a question regarding the endgame area. i suggest not clicking click more to not ruin the surprise.
if you have any idea what this thing does, im interested about the white coin at the "end" at the game. to be more specific, its in the 1st level (there is a sign containing the number "1" on it) in a lobby you get promptly dropped into after passing the greyscale peach castle via beating bowser in eternal fort. at the top of the tower in the level, there is a pipe which brings you to a run-down purple and black version of the level itself with bbh music. in the run-down tower however, there is a long bridge on the other side where the pipe should be in the tower. at the end, there is simply a single white coin placed at the end of the bridge that drops to the abyss.
since getting to the lobby via the grey castle require you to sit through the "credits", the hud is gone, so i have no idea what change it does. although approaching it slightly lags the game. no particles or anything from collecting the coin. dont approach it from the sides though, as it will crash the game for whatever reason. i just want to know whether the coin does something special. ill provide a discord image attachment link but i doubt youtube actually allows links to be posted.
I think that was just a coincidence that you had that coin spawn there. The silver coins just show up once in a while. Sometimes they make a "boing" noise, sometimes they crash the game. I don't believe they do anything beyond that. I've seen them show up in a number of different places, but they're pretty rare.
ah, i see. pretty interesting though! at first i found it pretty weird considering the location its put in but i suppose its fitting for the hack.. haha.
@@BikdipOnABus It can also spawn random objects, including stars you wouldn't be able to obtain at all otherwise.

I pressed the yellow switch and it certainly has made the game a bit more challenging, maybe that's its purpose.

I actually did get the green switch in Metal Cap under the Water in my playthrough. I wonder if switch locations are random?

I pressed the switch to get the unobtainable OW stars and now some areas of the castle are stretched upwards a bit, I also lost my hat to both snowman and Mr Blizzard but at least I kept the leave stage by painting flag

If you edit the flags using "star display" and remove the 3rd "unused" flag you fix your game.
Since collecting the red star from bowser 1 gives the player access to several doors and abillities, does anyone know what the red star from the timed mission in "dead end lobby" does? Does it alter anything? I noticed after collecting it that Mario's health stopped regenerating naturally but i'm unsure if that was from that or another event I encountered somewhere.
That one isn't a real red star, so no, it doesn't do anything. There are other red stars you can get that do work though. The game doesn't care which one you collect first.
@@BikdipOnABus Then what cause Mario to stop regenerating? The more I learn about how this hack works, the more questions I have.
@@PriestOfTheHelix From what I've found, two "real" red stars take it away, but it can also come back. It can also get taken away for other reasons. The game basically adjusts the difficulty based on a bunch of different factors, I couldn't tell you exactly what the triggers are.
I’m not quite sure if I understand how MIPS works in this build, do all of the MIPS re appear if you get 50 stars? Or is it straight up not possible to get all 3 15 star MIPS and all 3 50 star MIPS
When you get 15 stars, all three spawn. You can get one star from each, but you have to get the courtyard one last, because collecting its star despawns the others. Once you have 50 stars, it's the exact same process for three more stars.
The yellow switch only comes into play because it can flip whether or not you've collected OW-4 and OW-5, the two from the courtyard. If it turns either of those off, MIPS reappears in all three locations until you collect the star(s) from the courtyard one again. (If you've already gotten the stars from the other two, they'll still reappear, but the stars will be duplicates.)
And if you hit the switch before collecting any of those and it happens to turn on OW-4 or OW-5 , then you can permanently locked out of the stars from the other MIPS locations since now the "master" one is collected and it despawns the other two.

Hey, I'm not sure if you've talked about this in any other video, but after getting to the "postgame" all the cap switches deactivated and I can't seem to get them to activate again? Which makes doing some of the postgame stuff seemingly impossible. I've seen this has happened to others but I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere, so do you know if I'm missing something or if it's meant to do that?
Correct, playing after the ending cutscene disables all the cap switches and there's no way to turn them back on (unless you reset, then they should come back on automatically). There's several things in the postgame levels that are impossible to complete because of this.

what emulator are you using to be able to see the star counter, flags etc? id like to be able to have more control over my playthru also
Project64 3.0. You need to download a separate program - Star Manager. If you check the description of some of my other videos you can find the link to the file it uses to format the stars properly. (For 1.0 you should be able to look at the release announcement video)

There should be more events that take away the HUD, it creates a sense of loneliness.

Will say when i was exploring my health stopped regenerating.(all levels, not just ones with the modern power meter) I am not 100% sure this is caused by the yellow switch, since i wasnt paying attention closely, just that I stopped gaining hp every few seconds like i was at the start.
Maybe the final bowser red star door count changed. I havent seen nor tried it normally, but i kept on hearing you say that there were 13 red stars needed to get through the door. I went through the 0.7 route to finish the game and with the red castle roof the star door said i needed 10 red stars to open it. Again not sure if its the yellow switch or something else ive done or if the door is just lying to me, but figured id mention it.
Had you already collected some red stars when you checked that door? It tells you how many *more* you ned to get, not total. At least in 1.0.
I've never even seen the yellow switch but I stopped regenerating health. Not sure what causes it.
Regeneration seems to stop when you have two "real" red stars. Most of them don't count as real. The better question is what makes regen come back, since I've seen that happen before.
And yeah, the final door tells you how many more you need, so if it says 10, you only have three reds. (There's only 7 real ones in the game, compared to the 19 total when you include all the fake ones)
@@BikdipOnABus I noticed getting regeneration back sometime after hitting the Yellow Switch. Though I ended up losing it after resetting the game. I think I also remember Yoshi disappearing on the Castle Grounds too.

It'll always be there in Lethal Cavern. With the other stage, it only shows up under very specific conditions. Going in and out of the level won't do it.

Is it possible to fix the exiting from the painting thing after you push the yellow switch?
I don't care if I need to hack the game or something lol
You could probably edit the flags on the star display program (turn most of them off except the cap switch ones). I haven't tried this but I assume it would work.

It was the 3rd "unused" flag that caauses that.
