Excellent video. I switched to all Apple two years ago, but already using OneDrive for external storage. I have been struggling with it and it has been a considerable source of angst for me. As with most tech problems, ultimately the answer is incredibly simple. This video cleared up some basic problems I have encountered in using OneDrive on my Mac. Thank you!

I'm confused about the cloud backup at the end. If your mac computer failed, wouldn't you be able to login to onedrive from any other system and retrieve your files?

    • @BurtonMKelso
      @BurtonMKelso  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes you can. One drive on a Windows computer, however, will automatically download the information from your OneDrive account back into your folders on your computer. With a McIntosh computer, it won’t automatically download your content from OneDrive.

Hello, thank you for this video! I have a question, if you happen to know, on macbook, I want to move OneDrive from Macintosh HD to an external folder. Microsoft support reads "Ensure the external drive is a non-ejectable type and formatted as APFS". I have it formatted as APFS but do you know how on earth am I going to change the classification of the drive from removable to non-ejectable? Thanks!

The challenges at OneDrive is a Microsoft exclusive program, which means that it’s really designed to work to its fullest capacity on a Windows computer. You’re having the issue that you’re having because you’re working on a Macintosh computer. The only way that you could solve this problem is if you were to access your OneDrive account on a Windows computer, and then copy the files to an external hard drive.

Time Machine would have been good issue here. I've understood that you can't use OneDrive as drive for Time Machine, but you could make a virtual disk on your computer and then backup that to OneDrive. I guess I would go the easy way, using external SSD for Time Machine backup and then have files in OneDrive on top of that. Then your computer would be restorable from SSD and files would be safe and usable in other machines from OneDrive

Thanks for your video. I found it informative, but I have a clarification question that may be specific to my situation. I have been using an iPhone for years and am now going back to Apple products (my last Apple computer was a IIe) from a work career of Windows/Office. I use Office 365 and will continue to do so on the Mac. I currently use OneDrive as my backup. All files (docs, pics, etc.) are on my Windows laptop and fully sync to OneDrive. I want to have the same situation on the Mac... I am not worried about hard drive space. From what I have seen and read, it looks like when I install OneDrive on the Mac, I tell it what folders I want to sync from OneDrive to the Mac, and if I want them all local, I have to "disable" the "keep them on the cloud only" function. Then, what is on OneDrive will also be on the Mac.
My question is this... On a Windows machine, I can tell OneDrive which folders to sync up, whether the "MyDocs" folder or other folders I have created for my file structure. But it appears that is not the case in the Mac environment. Am I able, therefore, to set default save paths to the OneDrive folder in lieu of that or will I have to manually move files over to OneDrive? (I do not plan on using Apples doc/spreadsheet suite except in the rare instance when someone sends me one of those files and I need to "convert" it to a format usable in MSOffice.
By the way, I also plan on using Time Machine, backing up to a dedicated Samsung T7 SSD drive, so I have a complete local backup too.
A related question to the doc backups... what about system backup? I believe I can restore system wide from Time Machine in the event of a systemic failure, but can I back up the system/programs/configurations (or whatever they're called in MacOS) to my "free" 5Gig iCloud account?

    • @callintegralnow

OneDrive for Mac will not have the same functions as it would on a Windows computer. Only the basic function of being able to upload and download files will work.

Really nice information, thank you so much. Very informative. I have one issue that I'm trying to solve. I was able to setup an external drive, however it appears to be syncing both locally and externally. I would like OneDrive to see the ext. drive as the default and STOP the local sync all together. Is that possible? I don't want to fill up my local hard drive. Cheers!

    • @BurtonMKelso

@@BurtonMKelso Thank you very much for responding, and so quickly. I've completed several rounds of logging out (per your note), ResetOneDriveAppCommand, deleted keychain passwords, force quit OneDrive processes, and reformatted the drive.
I've been working with OneDrive for a year or more now on an iMac and just setup a new MacBook (Monterey 12.2) with a fresh install. It is creating two instances of the archive; a folder that resides on my local HD/user/myname/OneDrive, as well as an instance on the external drive.
They sync in unison as it were, which results in a duplicate of the archive. It seems to be forcing the OnDemand feature as well as the option to maintain storage space via the 'Free Up Space' option.
Sorry, that was longwinded. I do apologize. My next step is to elevate the issue with MS. I've run out of ideas. :)

On both a Mac and PC OneDrive will sync your local drive to the cloud storage. I found this our the hard way when I started saving pictures from my Digital camera. Little did I know, OneDrive was syncing my pictures to my hard drive which was only 256MB. When I moved to an M1 Mac with 1TB of disk space, I had the same problem. Why, because simple put there is no way to stop OneDrive from syncing between platforms.

Also, in the time that video was made almost a year ago, I am sure there are changes in Monterey that will allow less function of OneDrive in MacOS. The main thing you should expect from OneDrive on a Mac is the fact you can see and access your OneDrive files on your Mac.
