      I just purchased and downloaded your Hallow Star quilt pattern. You are doing your demo with 2.5” strips and the quilt is with larger strips. I have tons of 2.5” strips leftovers. I’m thinking a scrappy Star quilt with 2.5”. I know it would take more stars and they would be smaller. Have you ever done this? Am I crazy to consider this? Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

    Thank you for sharing such great information! I have both the bed size pattern and the runner pattern. I’ve made the bed quilt and I had a hard time with the seams. I just looked at the runner pattern and I noticed that you included more instructions on which direction to press the seams when you put together the triangle units, whereas the bed size pattern does not have that information. This video really explained it all better. TFS!

    Hi Krista. On the triangle cuts, how can you tell which is the bias and which is the straight of grain edges?

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The triangles have two biased edges and one straight of grain edge... the biased edges will have a little stretch to them if you give them a tug, also they do not fray. The straight of grain edge will fray, so you can try to pull a thread at the edge and if it frays down the edge that's a straight of grain edge. You'll eventually learn to recognize the look of each kind of edge at a glance once you've done this a few times. But those are fool proof ways to know! I hope that all made sense :)

    Can you also do the Bee 🐝 quilts with the smaller ruler?

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do Bumblebee Blossoms with the mini ruler, but Biggy The Bee needs the large ruler.

  • @marilynjw1971
    @marilynjw1971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you keep up with which edges are biased? when you snip all 3 corners off the white triangles, doesn't that make it hard to keep up with which side is biased? Maybe it's just me??? hahaha Love your videos.

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is tougher once all the corners are lopped off... but only the straight of grain edge will fray, so that's an easy way to tell. If you use your fingernails to kind of pull at the threads on the edges only the straight of grain edge will pull loose. Eventually you will come to recognize the grain just by looking at it, but this is a little hint way to tell.

    • @marilynjw1971
      @marilynjw1971 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kristamoser Awesome....I did see that helpful hint about fraying on another of your videos yesterday....though I thought to myself, I'd just put a pin parallel on the long straight of grain side of the triangle and keep the stack together....until put in the block....then the pressing directions will keep me straight. :)

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You bet Cindy! I don't know what rulers you have, but I'm sure it wouldn't be to hard to figure out using another 60 degree ruler, provide it does these cuts!

  • @jaydeedee1191
    @jaydeedee1191 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you use layer cakes to make the bed size pattern?

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You technically could... You would probably have one extra seam in there, because the larger cut on the big quilt is bigger than 10", but I have seen someone cut their layer cake squares in half, sew the pieces end to end making like a 5" x 19 1/2" strip and then cutting angles from that.

    • @kristamoser

      It sure is! The illustrations are more right handed, but if you turn the pattern upside down so the words are upside down does that help the illustrations make sense for a lefty?

  • @DutchThroat
    @DutchThroat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't understand what you mean by bias edge...?

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bias edge is when you are not cutting with the weave of the fabric, but instead you cut across it at an angle. In this video I cut across it at a 60 degree angle, but you can get a bias edge at a 45 degree angle as well. Here is a little video I looked up that might help explain it. th-cam.com/video/BE5beRrTXSY/w-d-xo.html

    With the white solid there is no right side so you could have cut two layers.

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is very true! That works for something like Kona solids... but if you are using say a white on white or a solid that has a finer finish on one side you'll want to cut through one layer at a time. It does change what edges the bias falls on if you cut through two layers (the mirror image cuts will have opposite biased edges).

    • @tzfatree
      @tzfatree 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bias is diagonal. Does it matter which direction? You could also stack several layers all right size up. In any case, I like the pattern!
