  • @theodoreroosevelt2154

I’m gonna keep it real, I think this version is sadder than the reprise. The reprise is direct with its sorrow, but this one falls into a special place. It has its upbeat and somewhat happy tone, but the lyrics tell a different story. The narrator knows he’s most likely going to die, but he’s going with this enthusiasm anyways. The way that I see it, this is a young man ignorant to what he’s actually getting into, the reprise is that man after he’s lost that confidence.

    • @matthewsaari6577
      @matthewsaari6577 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I agree. Depicting war as strickly sad and things definitely has it's place. But the great part of this is the upbeat I took as being the way we like to represent the military as this great adventure and battle being amazing action. When in reality at the end the man has died and is talking about his own funeral.

@@matthewsaari6577 I interpret it as how warfare was viewed at the time (They’re wearing Union uniforms so I assume American Civil War). At the beginning of the war, thousands were signing up daily to go off and fight in the war for the glory of their homeland. The south had multiple occasions where regiments had to be left home for a while, or sent hundreds of miles to another state because the corps in the local area literally didn’t have room for another regiment. However the lyrics hint at what the experience would actually turn into

I think S/Sgt E.S. Tankersley would have liked this song. At the age of 15 he ran away from home to join the 7th Cavalry prior to WWII. He left the Cavalry to become an original member of the First Special Service Force (the Devil's Brigade) His last ride was on a green broke horse that he had just shod. (his back had been broken and fused together) With nothing but the halter, he mounted military style and proceeded to gallop the horse up and down the gravel road. His comment; "There's nothing like a horse to make a man feel alive."

I Wanna Be In The Cavalry - Corb Lund -- Lyrics: Well I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
Well I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
Well I wanna horse in the volunteer force that's riding forth at dawn
Please save for me some gallantry that will echo when I'm gone
I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long
I'd not a good foot soldier make, I'd be sour and slow at march
And I'd be sick on a navy ship, and the sea would leave me parched
But I'll be first in line if they'll let me ride, by god, you'll see my starch
Lope back o'er the heath with the laurel wreath underneath that vict'ry arch
Well I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
Let me earn my spurs in the battle's blur where the day is lost or won
I'll wield my lance as the ponies dance and the blackguards fire their guns
A sabre keen, and a saddle carbine and an army Remington
Where the hot lead screams with the cold, cold steel let me be a cavalryman
Well I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
An' I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
Well I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
Let 'em play their flutes and stirrup my boots and place them back to front
'Cause I won't be back on the rider-less black and I'm finished in my hunt
Well I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
Well I wanna be in the cavalry, but I won't ride home no more

This is a classic tune! It's the exact song (with different words) as Stan Rogers' song "Idiot". The theme is exactly the same, but a different setting. I mean the music/melody is exactly the same. It's an old Scottish folk song with different works. And the video is in this version is excellent! On a related note, I just picked up a restored 1859 McClellan saddle that fits my mustang like a glove! ;D
