Inside a Breathtaking Desert Mansion That Looks Like A Fossil | Unique Spaces | Architectural Digest

- Today on Architectural Digest we visit Joshua Tree in California to tour the awe-inspiring Kellogg Doolittle Residence. The sensational build was designed by organic architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg and his protegee John Vugrin in the 1980s taking over 20 years to complete. Upon first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking this property was a living creature; the magnificent structure appears skeletal with 26 cast-concrete pieces fanning out in resemblance of vertebrae. An art piece in and of itself, it is no wonder this unique space is considered one of Kellogg’s greatest masterpieces.

It's amazing how primitive and futuristic it looks at the same time. It feels ancient yet very modern. It's artistically functional.
To say it's functional is a stretch. Try sitting at that bar for a few drinks. Goodbye kneecaps.
@@nullobject7966 functional for the owner at least.
Ah rich people stuff..
Artistically functional is the perfect description.
@Bene Gesserit... Yes! I kept thinking if Fred Flintstone and George Jetson got together to build a house, it would end up looking something like this.
It's ancient, it's futuristic, it's contemporary... it's so perfect! Kudos to everybody involved in building this
It's also My house. I live there lol
i want to like your comment but it's at 222 likes :))
Ancient, futuristic and contemporary. Like something out of Star Wars or Dune.
🤌🏾✨

The architect and the interior designer/fabricator are absolutely genius. I've never seen such an immersive and integrated expression of architecture, design and artistry.
THATS WHERE ZENON FOUND PROTA ZOA
It is as if Antoni Gaudí had been born again in the desert.
Organic architecture at the highest level.
Thank you for bringing it , I enjoyed it very much.
There isn't a grain of semblance with Gaudi here, but obviously it's the only architect you folk know about.
Gaudi is my favorite!
@@offbeat65 there's more then a few grains, relax.
I'm surprised this house is not more widely known. It is a true masterpiece.
The house is very well known. 🟧♾️🟧
It's always seen as a museum.
It’s kind of impractical. Beautiful but looks uncomfortable and dangerous. No blinds sharp edges etc…
That's because it doesn't have cheap RGB LED strips all over the place with a Lamborghini parked out front.
The ones with taste will appreciate something like this the ones that don't, they just want to stand around with bottles being paraded around them and take selfies.
@@starcrib it really isn’t
How lucky is a talented designer/craftsman would meet a client who doesn't limit his vision and has the deep pocket to let him do the masterpiece such as this house. It's every artist, designer's dream.
an great engineers and constructors team
Have to pick my jaw off the floor. This is fantasy like vision, design, details and craftsmanship. The amount of thought & details that went into this masterpiece is amazing.
What unlimited money looks like.
❤😂😂😂😂😂🎉
Money can’t buy taste
Better than someone who has money and does nothing with it
This is a museum quality built. This shows how modern architecture can also be full of characters.
i wish it were a museum!!!
Like the whole alphabet?
It almost feels like a museum and a treat to geologists/paleontologists. It's just so amazing.
This is what Flinstone would buy if he kept that manager job.
I think its a treat for everyone. Don't have to be an artist to appreciate art.
@@tinycatmakfat Well, that is definitely true 😅😊
The attention to detail and the seamless blend of modern aesthetics with natural elements is truly impressive. I found myself captivated by the stunning visuals and the thoughtful explanations provided by the architect. It's fascinating to witness the creative process behind such remarkable structures. Thank you, Architectural Digest, for sharing this inspiring content!
This is a jaw-dropping house. Mind-blowing. Art doesn’t even begin to describe it. And Kellogg is so unassuming and gentle. An endeavor of a lifetime. Beautifully filmed - thank you.
Feels like a mansion of an extraterrestrial duke who has reigned for hundreds of years. An Artwork perfectly blended into the environment. My eyes have never observed anything like this.
It is indeed the same feeling like looking at Mark Rothko's painting
Hahah, perfectly said! I binge a ton of architecture videos and this is easilyyy my favourite
I love how sci-fi your comment is.
reminds me of a house in Dune
Speechless. The blood, sweat & tears that have gone into the house since 1989 astounds me. Forget about the skill in its design, fabrication & installation. Heck, think of assembling all of that in the remote, hostile setting of the unforgiving desert. How do humans achieve so much?
This is not a mansion. It’s art
Pretty Much...Yeah?!
Absolutely
Add few friendly neighborhood would be amazing too
It's both.
No video related to homes, or architecture in general, is complete without someone using this exact same phrase in the comments. Sometimes you get multiples of the same comment.
Remember way back, when you'd hear someone reply with "Captain Obvious!".
What happened to that phrase?
This brings Giorgio De Chririco metaphysical paintings to mind. It's other - worldly. Beautiful
Finally something that isn't a big rectangular prism.
Yes, I am tired of so many modern houses looking so boring, like blocks. This is modern, but also creative. Cant stand the death of detail- this is refreshing.
it definitely has a 1990’s vibe but becuase the elements inside are so intricately and thematically designed, it became unique and timeless.
Try to afford it, then you'll realise why cubicals has more sense.
@@MsReneeAJones Job..😆😅🤣😂
The problem(s) with architecture and building like this is sustainability, but not in the environmental-impact sense. The sustainability problem that this house, for example, faces is that, once the architect, this interior designer, and whomever else that worked in this house retires and/or passes away, who is going to know how to sustain and maintain this house? If something breaks, like the plumbing, how are they going to fix it behind 2 feet of pressed rock?
This is not to say this house was poorly made (quite the opposite, actually), but it is to legitimize why there are “so many modern houses” that are “boring, like blocks.”
Can't blame people who prefer cubical or in your term "boring". It is feasible and cheap, money is the mother of all designs.
Ken Kellogg is one of the most unique organic architects ever and one of the first to bring it to residential. He has some very amazing and lesser known homes he’s designed all throughout Southern California. One of my favorites is of course the Doolittle house as well as “Wingsweep”.
I thought it was designed by Bart Prince or Eugene Tsui

"The Picasso, Miles Davis Of Architecture"...Pure Flow Of Possibilities....🤔 ❤️👍👍
What an incredibly inspirational and unique house. Totally in awe, and the passion and skill that has gone into it's formation. Wonderful also to see John's feelings and emotions pour out in describing the construction. Wow! Thanks for producing this.
I was lucky enough to visit this house last year and it was beyond my imagination. Really a life changing experience!
Can anyone visit the house? Or was it a once in a lifetime opportunity for ya?
@@andreaacosta272685 YOu can rent it on Airbnb. We where there with 7 People and 5 Huskys.
The dogs broke alot of the furniture and some glas tables but the owner was very relaxed about it. There was no swimming pool wich is kinda lame if you ask me.
@@andreaacosta272685 I don't believe them at all....
@@andreaacosta272685It’s on airbnb, Kellogg Dolittle house. USD5k/night
This is incredible. It's a giant sculpture more than anything... absolute masterpiece.
I love how every corner of it has a story telling. Every detail compliments in a way that it's not exaggerated. A master piece beyond imagination. ❣👏
A masterpiece of architecture- that said I wouldn't want to live in it, a bit too austere for my comfort but I sure would love to visit it.
I think this is easily one of my favourite homes you've featured this far. The uniqueness, the AMOUNT OF DETAILS!!! the different use of materials, colours, playfulness with shapes, there are so many components but it all ties so well together. I'm so blown away and just makes me so happy knowing this house exists.
I've spent years looking at beautiful houses but I have never seen anything as original or amazing as this.
Bart Prince? Eugene Tsui? Javier Senosiain? Bruce Goff?
One of the most beautiful houses I've ever seen. Throughout the whole video, I was imagining myself buying this house someday and living in it. ♥️💐
keep dreaming, this only for born into money people
i have no words. there are no words capable of describing the momumental beauty of this creation. my perception of interior design and architecture has been permanently changed after watching this.
absolutely mind blowing.
I was recently driving through the desert and my intuition told me drive up this random road and it brought me to the foot of this magical place. Absolutely breathtaking. Inspiration for the rest of my life.
You… just… drive up desert roads… intuitively?! Who are you dude???
I did exactly the same. Even though I only reached the gates, it looked unbelievable, like an alien spaceship had landed in the desert.
It’s as if humans found an abandoned but fully intact structure built by unknown intelligent beings and moved into it. The design is so other-worldly. Incredible.
apparently they have found a number of such things according to the recent whistle blower David Grusch, pretty interesting news story developing at the moment.
Beautiful. I’m mesmerized by how organic and unique and timeless this space feels. Looks like a museum of design
How marvelous to be wed to your surroundings. To feel a kindred spirit to your roots. We all need to feel attached and bound to our homes and surroundings. To wake each morning knowing you are exactly where you belong. Tethered to the Earth and it’s vibrations.
Bravo, we’ll done!
one of the most authentic houses ive ever laid my eyes on. Just pure art and dedication.
Pure masturbation, actually.
I don't know how I feel about this. It is fascinating and terrifying at the same time. A modern-day tomb.
I know how I feel about it. It's grotesque. Dunno how anyone could live there.
Is it normal this bring tears to my eyes? Can we be amazed by another arquitecture after this? Its brilliant the amount of detail! This is so inspiring I was holding my breath while watching this I think my heart stopped for a little bit! Thank you for showing it to us.
what amazes me is how long they've been working on this! really goes to show a house is as much a living creature as the people in it. it's an ongoing project that takes a lot of love & labour before creative visions are fully realised.
At first glance I wasn't a fan...then a couple minutes later I fell in love. It is a breathtaking piece of art ! How lucky the current owners are . It's so warm and peaceful to me .
My first thought was a fossil, so I think they’ve successfully conveyed their message there, but as I saw more and more, I’m reminded of the biomechanical designs of H.R. Geiger. I love this house as the amazing piece of artutecture that it is.
Yes!!
Jaw dropping piece of art. Mindblowing the intricate details. It takes my breath away! What a legacy for this brilliant architect!!!
The house is as close as it gets to the Oculus desert living space. So beautiful, tranquil, and the magic of Joshua Tree! Thank you so much for featuring this house.
This is straight out of the Dune universe! Amazing!
It looks so unique and alien to Earth, yet so perfectly ensconced in its surroundings at the same time. Lovely! 😍
Lost for words, breathtaking, stunning! So happy to find this video on YT, thank you for showing! Wish we would see more of these beautiful curves and out-of-the-box architecture :)
If you were to say this was once a Beautiful GIANT Prehistoric Sea Creature's Fossil; and was discovered in the middle of a desert. Which was turned into a private resort, I would believe it. What a Lovely Ode to Forgotten Nature & Abstract Art. Bravo.
💯
They perfectly incorporated the boulders inside, sculptures as if it was part of their art collection. I almost didn’t want the video to end.
This desert manion is unique, primitive and extremely organic in design. It is very different. It is beautiful. It does look like a fossil.
I think this piece of architecture should be named “If Fred Flintstone was a Billionaire”.
Sorry, I think it’s hideous. It’s probably why it is not well known. It is so unlivable.
This is the most beautiful house ever created. Literally in awe of this masterpiece. Just wow
I'm so happy that John gets to play with this. And it's FASCINATING. There are SO FEW houses that are so genuinely thoughtful and still livable.
As an artist, I bow down to you 🙏🏼 Each and every part of the space is very carefully designed and modified. It's certainly one of the highest level of high you can get in creativity! It will stand the test of time gracefully.
What a labor of love. It’s simply incredible and a privilege just to see inside. Bravo!
I find this house beyond artistic. It’s a masterpiece! It’s breathtakingly beautiful, but it feels scary. It’s definitely inspiring.
A Masterpiece!! This structure should be studied in every architectural school ❤
This is definitely one of the more original houses I've ever seen. Definitely a great entertainment spot as well as there are so many cool elements of the house to explore. I was surprised to see how zen parts of the inside of the house were. Pleasantly surprised by that.
Masterpiece. Ancient, organic and futuristic at the same time. Impressive. Most impressive.
This is the most unique and interesting house I've ever laid my eyes on. It looks like a labor of love. Magnificent
I would never want to live in this, but what a great design!
I said the same above, I love it but this is literally not a house to live in............
This is the exact definition of out of this world. A true masterpiece.
Wow. I always love these videos because it feels like the house is alive, and allowing you to see it’s insides and workings. Feels like a house that grew and wasn’t made. If you’re interested read more on organic architecture
I can’t say I like it, but I can appreciate the unparalleled design ! It’s a one of a kind masterpiece!
Incredible imagination, endless vision, and amazing people who believed in the human vision, opened up, and sponsored potential, transforming it into an incredible, one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
The most well integrated and truly artistic design of architecture I've ever seen in a house.
This house is a masterpiece of art! I hope it stays the way it is forever and never gets rebuilt. The bathroom and the main bedroom at night with the view of the stars are my big favorite rooms 🥰
What an absolute masterpiece!
Looks like living inside of an ancient creatures carcass. Gorgeous, mysterious and stunning.
I’m devoid of adjectives to describe this masterpiece of inventive yet organic free thought. Brilliant, perhaps the most abstract yet thematic house in the world. No guardrails or cultural norms in this design, just whatever the moment suggested, and in great detail, no inch overlooked.
Stupifyingly sublime. The most beautiful of beautiful
I don't know why. But this house makes me emotional. I remember having a dream as a child about a house in the desert, maybe Arizona or Palm Springs, and the house was interwoven and displaced by large boulders, and the master bedroom had a glass interior wall, like a gallery, and inside was the master bed built into the rocks, with a clear water stream making a moat between the bed, and the exterior wall, and double-glass doorway of the master suite.
The way the sun and the shadows played off the natural curvature of the buildings, archways, and hallways, some which were semi open-air breezeways will never be forgotten to me.
No words to describe the house. It's primal and feels like a mitachondrial womb; it feels futuristic and beyond human understanding. I have never seen anything so perfectly conflicted.
Really just look into the mirror
Beyond anything I’ve ever seen before ! This is a testament to design architecture…so cool !
His inner thoughts sharing is very moving and inspiring! Thank you for showing us this masterpiece of architecture!
It’s giving Alien, Jurrasic Park & James Bond. It’s an architectural masterpiece 😍
So, this is genuinely creative and original. So many really new and unseen forms and solutions. One can tell, that the creators were largely unrestricted while developing this piece of housing-art.
i can't get over how it feels like a wondrous and slightly futuristic museum that is also a palace - yet also like the cosiest place on earth
It is a timeless piece of architecture; all past current and futuristic at the same time .
The Doolittle has has been a great inspiration to me as a builder, welder and desert dweller
WOW this is probably the most mind-blowing mansion design I've never seen!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love it. When you can't immediately pinpoint a style, it's usually authentic.
Absolutely spectacular
Love how futuristic it is yet as close to nature as possible. Totally dream house.
Wow, at first I didn’t think I was going to like this, but this is extraordinary. Extremely unique, but warm and surprisingly inviting.
Watching this gave me chills, it's such a stunning and original piece of architecture/art 🤯
Just every sense of the word spectacular.
I literally can’t even find the words to express how incredible I find this. This is beyond a masterpiece…
The shapes, textures, and colors makes this house a standout. It’s a mix of everything that suits the landscape
everything looks so surreal - yet in itself so homogeneous. stunning!
A masterpiece of organic architecture.
I wish Miles and John had a chance to see this. They would have fully understood the magnificent jazz and abstraction of it. The unifying of all the unique forms and all the amazing ideas into the surrounding environment is brilliant. Everywhere your eye moves throughout the dwelling is somewhere beautiful, full of beautiful things. Those Sputnik lights must be amazing to see in the deep darkness of such a place. I’m honored to have seen this.
🌿♾️🌿
Thank you AD for showcasing this masterpiece
Absolutely breathtaking
I've watched this evolve over time in architectural journals for years. Love this bit of film!
This wonderfully surprising house that uses the materials of the earth that time has created offers so many visual gifts that are simply astonishing. The rocks incorporated into it and the fossil designs are magical. As a hiking desert rat and rock hound, I absolutely love it!
There’s a Gaudi-like feeling to this space. It’s like looking through a microscope of enlarged cell-like structures- even though the materials are of stone glass and metal, there is movement and flow. LOVE
This has been realised to a level of perfection that I hope they feel incredibly proud of. Utterly complete and at one with its surroundings ❤️
I love how he was listening to jazz and getting inspired by the beat. I wish I could become this talented as a designer one day. This is absolutely incredible.
Wow. This is one of the most amazing houses I've ever seen.
Exquisite, unparalleled, beyond imagination. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Wow, I thought that this would be one of those ridiculous whimsical projects that these rich people with no idea of what to make with their billions would throw his money in just to say that it's big and it cost whatever, but this thing is really really beautiful and creative. There should be a whole neighborhood like that. A whole town. Made like that, all over the rocks.
Absolutely in love & awe of this masterpiece! Wonderful, thank you for showing this to me!
Breathtaking. Futuristic and ahead of its time !
What an astonishing building. Art and engineering in every inch
