Inside a Breathtaking Desert Mansion That Looks Like A Fossil | Unique Spaces | Architectural Digest

  • Today on Architectural Digest we visit Joshua Tree in California to tour the awe-inspiring Kellogg Doolittle Residence. The sensational build was designed by organic architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg and his protegee John Vugrin in the 1980s taking over 20 years to complete. Upon first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking this property was a living creature; the magnificent structure appears skeletal with 26 cast-concrete pieces fanning out in resemblance of vertebrae. An art piece in and of itself, it is no wonder this unique space is considered one of Kellogg’s greatest masterpieces.

The problem(s) with architecture and building like this is sustainability, but not in the environmental-impact sense. The sustainability problem that this house, for example, faces is that, once the architect, this interior designer, and whomever else that worked in this house retires and/or passes away, who is going to know how to sustain and maintain this house? If something breaks, like the plumbing, how are they going to fix it behind 2 feet of pressed rock?
This is not to say this house was poorly made (quite the opposite, actually), but it is to legitimize why there are “so many modern houses” that are “boring, like blocks.”

    • @ABCD-wt5ey

This house is a masterpiece of art! I hope it stays the way it is forever and never gets rebuilt. The bathroom and the main bedroom at night with the view of the stars are my big favorite rooms 🥰

I’m devoid of adjectives to describe this masterpiece of inventive yet organic free thought. Brilliant, perhaps the most abstract yet thematic house in the world. No guardrails or cultural norms in this design, just whatever the moment suggested, and in great detail, no inch overlooked.

I don't know why. But this house makes me emotional. I remember having a dream as a child about a house in the desert, maybe Arizona or Palm Springs, and the house was interwoven and displaced by large boulders, and the master bedroom had a glass interior wall, like a gallery, and inside was the master bed built into the rocks, with a clear water stream making a moat between the bed, and the exterior wall, and double-glass doorway of the master suite.
The way the sun and the shadows played off the natural curvature of the buildings, archways, and hallways, some which were semi open-air breezeways will never be forgotten to me.

No words to describe the house. It's primal and feels like a mitachondrial womb; it feels futuristic and beyond human understanding. I have never seen anything so perfectly conflicted.

So, this is genuinely creative and original. So many really new and unseen forms and solutions. One can tell, that the creators were largely unrestricted while developing this piece of housing-art.

I wish Miles and John had a chance to see this. They would have fully understood the magnificent jazz and abstraction of it. The unifying of all the unique forms and all the amazing ideas into the surrounding environment is brilliant. Everywhere your eye moves throughout the dwelling is somewhere beautiful, full of beautiful things. Those Sputnik lights must be amazing to see in the deep darkness of such a place. I’m honored to have seen this.

There’s a Gaudi-like feeling to this space. It’s like looking through a microscope of enlarged cell-like structures- even though the materials are of stone glass and metal, there is movement and flow. LOVE

Wow, I thought that this would be one of those ridiculous whimsical projects that these rich people with no idea of what to make with their billions would throw his money in just to say that it's big and it cost whatever, but this thing is really really beautiful and creative. There should be a whole neighborhood like that. A whole town. Made like that, all over the rocks.
