Thanks Jef! I turn 56 next week and I've forgot how to spell Cakewalk! Just learned how to turn on my new iPad 7th Gen I purchased last February--me tinks it's old now. I've got my pencil! Gimme something to write on man! Thanks from Ft. Worth, TX!
Little late to the game here...however, if you want to charge your lightning port iPad and use a USB audio interface at the same time, all you need is the Apple camera kit adapter (which you can still get on Amazon) that has both a lightning and USB port. The expanded camera kit adapter connects to the to the iPad via the lightning interface. The camera kit adapter then takes a lightning input from a power brick to power the iPad, and also lets you connect an audio interface via USB. Additionally, if you are using something like a 3rd gen Focusrite 2i2 or 4i4, which has a USB-C port, you can connect that to the adapter with a USB-C to USB cable and power the Focusrite from the same adapter that is powering your iPad. Thanks for the vid...was just looking at the Cubase app for iPad and it this vid was a good overview.
I just want to help you out here if you need it! Seeing as I just bought the new 12.9” iPad Pro.. The 1tb and 2tb iPad Pro’s will have 16gb of ram, which can be very helpful for us when it comes to DAW’s and rendering video on these M1 devices. I saw some numbers when I was looking into M1 performance, and the RAM goes a long way in those tasks-getting near base Mac Pro speeds!
You say it is “finally now a viable production tool” ? LOL it has always been a powerhouse for many many years now. The great and legendary MADLIB produced the entire Freddie Gibbs album “BANDANNA” with just the iPad and I have used it to track and mix more than 15 full length projects in Auria Pro and even mastered a few songs with the iPad. Just need the right tools and skills.
Make sure in your settings you have audio engine latency turned off its supposed to help with multi core rendering but all it does is use to much power. I’ve found that it works better with it off
I just downloaded it today for my 1st Gen iPad Pro 12.9 and it runs it great. I use a keystation 88 ES for the iPad instruments but have a Keystation Pro 88 and several analog synths. I use Cubase 11 for my PC Daw.
The timeline doesn’t snap normally. It’s very granular which is great but building songs is very fidgety so right now it’s better for cues I’m using the iPad Pros to control Logic Pro x with Logic remote which is incredible. Give it a try . I struggled with the iOS platform not providing a proper native daw like Apples own Logic Pro and realized apple isn’t really excited about the iPads being a device aimed at professionals so I went all in with the studio and the new iPad Pro m1 and all the trimmings. Now everything is perfect and the iPad Pro has many more useful roles as a synth and also a super controller that works better than anything third party I have used so now Logic “is “ a touch daw for professionals . ✌️👽
Steinberg/Yamaha should develop an audio and midi interface with mix control surface (with power) specifically for iPad. That SUB25 on your desk is an excellent controller for micrologue or Model D. Stick to AU3 external instruments and FX. Pass on the inter app stuff for best stability.
Good suggestion about AU3, my experience is very limited here! And yes, I would LOVE a Steinberg controller. I never used to be a hands-on tactile guy, but once you embrace hardware like maschine, the act of making music becomes more like playing an instrument!
Fair assessment. appreciate that you’re not predetermined to trash mobile recording like many, many other videos of this sort. To paraphrase Dr Strangelove, crossfading is not only possible, it is essential. You simply split your tracks at the edit point and pull up or down on the corner, depending on if it’s an In or Out. But of course it goes without saying your results may have been better with a 2021 iPad Pro which is not out for another week or more. Up to 16 gb RAM what what
Great overview. Was thinking about grabbing Cubasis as it’s on sale. BTW, there’s also a Lighting to USB connector from Apple that also has an additional Lightning In connector so that you may connect it to a charger or battery pack. That’ll solve the battery drain issue!
My current iPad is way too old and weak for much more than midi control and a few standalone audio apps functioning effectively as virtual analog synths or sample players. But the brand new M1 based iPad may just be a milestone for more fully featured music production. If you ever get one, that would be a really interesting video - possibly even using the same project as today’s great video.
Thanks Nico! I was wondering what your take on iPads was... It has SO much potential, but development is painfully slow it seems. I attribute that to the fact that developers just can't make much money given the low (cost) bar set for paid apps. I can't imagine too many of these companies are seeing huge profits on their iOS apps, but I think that'll change with the M1!
@@jefgibbons I think app pricing patterns in general and the 30% cut Apple takes are worse barriers than CPU and other hardware limitations. Great review and some important truths! I’ve been playing with iOS music production for 2 years (iPad Pro 12.9” 2020) and it’s fun, but then I wonder - why? I’m using Cubasis 3, BM3, Koala, and a dozen synths, VSTs and plugins and as you keenly point out; it’s not as good as Logic on a MacBook. The iPad is neato and a great “ideas” device, but for music production I often wonder why I’m toiling with apps and instruments that are “less”? Even the low cost hype is a myth. By the time you buy a DAW like Cubasis, a mixer like AUM, a midi sequencer, and a dozen instruments and plugins you’ve spent $500+ (albeit $10 - $40 at a time).
I hope that native instruments optimise kontakt and reaktor to run on the new M1 arm architecture. In doing so, it will be easy to port them to iOS when the new M1 iPads come out. Then I'm all in for the iPad. Apple should be reaching out to them.
Lately, I've been using Cubasis 2 on a 2017 iPad Pro trying to decide if I should transition from Garageband to Cubasis but the app's interface, at least in V2, is quite messy and you can spend a lot of time scrolling, scrolling, scrolling looking for that just-right instrument. It's not organized well. For example, why are the bass sounds not grouped all together? Having said all that, I still find the app a little addictive and I'm considering springing for V.3 since it's currently on sale because I'm quite bored with the instruments in Garageband (although it's hard to beat their virtual drummers). I have 0 interest in Logic Pro due to it's subscription model so it seems like Cubasis 3 is the logical step up from Garageband.
I think the iPad is a fantastic platform for music production, but when it comes down to music recording and editing, it's nowhere near as good as a desktop DAW. It sure can do the basic, essential stuff, but the moment you need more advanced tools, it falls short. Ipad DAWs are still young, though. Still far behind desktop capabilities, but it will get there, eventually.
I saw the Maschine app on your iPad - I have it too but haven’t figured out a way to connect it to Cubasis. Any thoughts? If nothing else I’d love to get the samples from it

Great Video Jef. I have to say though, I bought the 2020 ipad pro with 1tb storage and still getting the same old crashes and unstable quirks and issues that you are having with apps/plugins and Cubasis 3 and Garage Band crashing when only doing basic functions on light projects. I’m surprised you were able to get this many instruments functioning as good as you did in this video.
Great video a little confused did the plugin for the sax create a new sax instrument with just one note like as if the mini sampler used the note...little confused any help would be appreciated thx
iPads and Macs are now on the same chip. Still super early but just sayin'. IMO Windows touch screen tablets went all in way too early but with Apple I think they are going the other extreme with "A laptop is for this and an iPad is for this". I predict within 5 years they'll be able to cut that difference and those training wheels loose, and even with Microsoft's early adoption of attempting to blur those lines you'll have a far better experience with Apple. I use Windows hybrids, not a good time for anything high end, or honestly, even mid end.
No idea what you are talking about... I played the Rhodes, and it is exactly what you are hearing at the beginning... no trickery or fakery there my friend.
Hi! And thank you for your video! I actually would like to know if it is possibile on cubasis 3 to play multiple virtual instrument track at the same time (piano flûte and bass together for example), and if it is possibile to do that while playing along with a recorded track on the same project. There is a problem when playing the vst instruments…a particular note is very loud. Is it possible to lower the volume of that single note through cubasis app. Please reply.. Thankyou…
Thanks for the detailed review. I already put my investment buying plugin in iPad app stuff like Cubasis etc, But also have laptop with nice DAW & plugin.. To avoid overspending, is it good path do track mixing in iPad, and master in laptop? Or maybe vice versa? Anybody have experienced mixing using both worlds? Yes! It’s my baby... just got it at an auction a few months ago. Also have JX3P, DX7, Juno 6, CZ3000, and a Korg Poly 800. Plus the Moog Sub25, and Microfreak! All the old synths were below $600 each!! Don’t have any super costly ones.... yet ;)

Cubasis 3 needs work, I really tried to use in a professional setting, just not a polished product. Quantize not really tight and time-stretch is buggy
It does’nt have enough horsepower it just glitches. Best using a computer. Not to mention the tiny buttons you have to press and cant see the values you wanted to change. Its very fiddly a waste of time.
No grouping (glue) of (audio) objects!?! No ripple editing! Region selection is a pain in the... No custom shortcuts! FX cause audible phasing. This software is way below of what is possible and neccessary - probably on purpose (to move people to Cubase eventually). Cubasis is only one step above garage band and cannot be used for professional work thus it's nothing more than a toy - and an expensive one at that. Clever but lame business model - typical of Yamaha.
Man I guess I just need to switch DAWs again. Cubasis is pretty weak overall. Idk understand why they can’t just make it like Cubase. What is this amateur hour? The norm is set at 48k sample rate. For what?

Is there a way to add Bookmarks to the timeline as Bitwig does? Or how you can play from the star of a clip? I added tracks 10 to 25 minutes long and Im splitting every 20 to 40 seconds to color code the parts I want to practice along with my piano.
Hi great vido :-)Can you export midi and omf to other daw 🙂
Hi..I have a midi keyboard connected to my iPad Pro. I use VST like collosus piano app just for playing and not for recording. There is a problem when playing the vst instruments…a particular note is very loud. Is it possible to lower the volume of that single note through cubasis app. Please reply..
Thankyou…
Not that I know of! That’s a tough problem… send in the controller keyboard for repairs?
@@jefgibbons thankyou for your reply.
Thank you 🎉🙏
Thanks for the detailed review. I already put my investment buying plugin in iPad app stuff like Cubasis etc,
But also have laptop with nice DAW & plugin..
To avoid overspending, is it good path do track mixing in iPad, and master in laptop?
Or maybe vice versa?
Anybody have experienced mixing using both worlds? I only do simple acoustic vocal recording, maybe few piano, I have the instruments. Thanks!
I’d say master in the computer, better choice of plugins for that sort of thing!
I definitely love using my iPad with Logic by using Logic remote. Especially the key commands, and chord strips
You could check out Auria.
Vintage vibe!
YES! They were the only place in the world that sells the cable I needed for my Rhodes! Just had to buy a shirt too...
thank you sir
Most welcome Hagen!
Good to hear a guy talking on this thing who seems
to of had a reasonable education.

@@jefgibbons nah man i use the 20wtt that comes with ipad
@@jefgibbons been real annoyed with this
👍
For crossfading use automation it records the leveling you want at different parts in the song as well as on off fx
Get the pen makes it even easier to edit.
I’ve got it! Didn’t even think to pull it out 🤦🏻♂️
But I am pretty sure I will have dropped notes if I start pushing it hard.
Let me know if you have stuck/hung notes
@@jefgibbons Absolutely. I shall do that. When composing I tend to lean more towards my Cubase 11 Daw on my PC. My sample library consists of about 20 TB. I subbed your channel as well. Thanks for the great videos. BTW, what hardware synths do you have? I noticed a Juno 106 in the background :)
@@jefgibbons LOVE that Rhodes 88 by the way.
Yes! It’s my baby... just got it at an auction a few months ago. Also have JX3P, DX7, Juno 6, CZ3000, and a Korg Poly 800. Plus the Moog Sub25, and Microfreak! All the old synths were below $600 each!! Don’t have any super costly ones.... yet ;)
@@jefgibbons Yes I agree. My DeepMind12 is my baby I, as well, have a few other synths. In addition to the DeepMind, I have a Novation Mini Nova, an Ensoniq SQ1+, an Ensoniq ASR-10. The ASR-10 had a few things wrong with it when I got it. The A/D converter was bad so I had to replace that chip along with a few keys and the floppy drive. It's like new now. I bought my DeepMind new for $499.00. A friend of mine owns a music store here in town and it was setting on the shelf for awhile and he just wanted it gone. I love the WiFi connectivity in the synth and the synth all around is amazing. Analog goodness brother. Analog goodness :)
Cubasis 3 needs work, I really tried to use in a professional setting, just not a polished product. Quantize not really tight and time-stretch is buggy
it's not designed for a professional setting.
5:48 Apple Pencil.
It does’nt have enough horsepower it just glitches. Best using a computer. Not to mention the tiny buttons you have to press and cant see the values you wanted to change. Its very fiddly a waste of time.
Got a Logic for iPad video coming, definitely powerful!
Simple anwser: no!
No cross fade is a dealbreaker.
For what?
If that’s making music I don’t want to.
If?......hmmmm are you blind.
