I hope your wife has become more comfortable with riding the back roads. My daughter and I have been doing this all of our lives. It is so much fun. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to do this. I am 70 years old and still enjoy it and do it at least monthly. We camp in our car or in a tent. Nothing to fear as long as you have protection.

Living in a small town I grew up riding around on back roads for fun. What makes me nervous is taking a big van down a road and being able to turn around if the road gets bad. I do love it but it makes me nervous. Thanks for watching and sharing.

Thanks for watching and being with us! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all of you who are watching today. We’re glad you took a few minutes out of this special day to spend it with us. We didn’t see the “bears” until we watched this in 4K last night and then it was too late to edit another video. But when we get to the campsite near the end of the video take a look in the trees. We should have done that. There’s a bear in the trees near the forest road and a mom and a cub in a tree right over Lynn’s head. And we didn’t even see them. We heard them later as they scurried down. And you can see Maggie on “high alert” as we’re sitting around the fire. So… do as we say… not as we do!
And it always comes up… COULD YOU HAVE MADE THIS TRIP IN A TRAVATO OR PROMASTER? Answer? With or without Lynn? It’s not the road as much as not knowing what’s around the corner and being able to recover if you get into a situation that needs recovery. That said, if you’re cautious, careful and take you time a Travato could absolutely make it on these dirt roads as long as it hasn’t been pouring rain right before you head in. And if you find that you’ve reached your comfort limit do a 10-point turn-around and just declare the road wins. We loved our Travato and it took us to some very sketchy places. We do feel safer in the Revel but that said we’d feel even safer in a Jeep Rubicon so when do you draw the line between off-roading and comfort? So… go for it and turn around if you feel you go from might get stuck to probably will get stuck.

Good morning Owen and Lynn. Thanks again for taking us along the backroads. It was beautiful. I did order another Solo Stove, the Campfire, for my nephew. It is the size of a gallon of paint and just takes small twigs. Easy to gather at just about any camp site (Lynn would appreciate that). I have gotten several comments from other campers about it. Thanks for your link.
    Happy father’s day Owen!

@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle I really like the gallon size Solo Stove. I had a camper come over to say to me “you have the smallest stove in the campground but the largest flame”. It burns very efficiently as you know by your larger stove. I put in twigs and small chunks of wood- 3-4 inches in length. It stores in my van easily and I get the sense of a campfire without all the lugging of wood. I picked up sticks on my property (broken down to size) and put them into a paper grocery bag. The bag lasted me 2 nights plus I used the paper bag as a starter! Enjoy your travels and be safe.

Try to get down to Fort Fisher, NC where you can see for yourself that there is no curvature for at least 11 miles. On a clear calm day, with a zoom lens, you can photo people on the beach at Bald Head Island. It is a real eye opener because according to the Pythagorean Theorem, there should be at least 66 feet of curvature between you and what you can see with your own eyes.
Then scan the ocean horizon with a zoom and see that nothing is going over the horizon.
Let your air down and you can drive your rig about three quarters of that distance after you pay a government fee.

We did the entire Blue Ridge Parkway last year and did a daily blog here’s a link to EP 1 of the 5 part series th-cam.com/video/dfO0h_N2VKk/w-d-xo.html. It was lots of fun and we highly recommend it. We have been to Shenandoah NP several times, it is one of our favorites.

I know in one of your videos Lynn tells about how y’all found Maggie, which one was it? We love your videos and my husband didn’t see the one about Maggie and I can’t find it now.

Donna, I sorry I could not find the video either. But here’s a post we put on FB several years ago. Sorry it’s so long.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAGGIE! One year ago today Lynn and I had a day that was similar to today. I had just finished a show the night before, just like last night, and had another one that Friday... so we went for a hike/walk at the Reddies River Trail in North Wilkesboro... something we do a lot. That day turned out to be a special day. About half way down the trail we were startled by something running out of the woods. That something turned out to be Maggie. She didn't look like she does today. She was dirty with mangled, matted hair and missing fur. She had ticks literally all over her, with one actually inside her eyelid. To our surprise she started walking with us... actually happily, tail wagging between us. When we turned around she turned around too and kept walking with us.
By the end of the trail we had decided that she must be lost and belong to someone and that if she'd ride in the car we'd take her to our vet to see if they could determine her owner and get some of the ticks removed. Lynn drove and I sat in the passenger seat and Maggie, who didn't have that name then, jumped right up into my lap. The vet took her as a walk-in and while we waited the ladies at the desk gave us some dog treats to give her. She devoured them. So, they went in the back and got some water and dog food in a bowl. She tore into that too and then jumped up and sat between us on the bench as we waited. Lynn went on to get groceries while I waited, her heart nor mine was not even close to healed from the loss of Jake just a few months earlier, so I thought putting some distance in while we learned about Maggie's fate was a good thing for her.
Well, she was not listed on any lost and found and she did not have a chip. (she does now). The vet and her assistant worked for more than 30 minutes removing ticks. Maggie had over 200 on her that they could guestimate. She even had one that was attached to the inside of her eyelid. She sat there calmly looking at me while they removed even that one. From her condition the vet said she felt like Maggie was more than likely about one year old and that she had sadly probably spent that entire one year fending for herself in the wild. That broke our hearts just to hear that and with those words Maggie was adopted into our family... a family that was still very much mourning the loss of our 17-year old 4-legged son, Jake.
May 8th also became Maggie's adopted birthday so at midnight last night Lynn and I sang happy birthday to her and lay there laughing as she looked around trying to see which one of her girls (Carrie or Abby) was here for us to sing to. Many believe that we adopted Maggie when the truth is, Maggie adopted us. She is so "famous" with all of you guys, with many of you asking to "be her". Granted she does have a good life now but she gives more love and attention than any living being we have ever known. A trip inside Walmart or a restaurant with her waiting in the car that has the A/C running is always, always, always greeted with the happiest welcome you could ever expect. She runs from seat to seat kissing, wagging and smiling. Every time! I once left her in here at home while I walked around the house picking up limbs while getting ready to mow. 5 minutes later I came back through the front door and you would have thought I had been gone for a week. Maybe it's because she was alone for so long and has now found us, but she does not let us get out of her sight if she can help it. And I guess the joy when we return when we do have to leave her is happiness from being glad we did actually return. She wakes up every morning between us just waiting for one of us to open just one of our eyes, then she pounces with kisses. It's almost like she wakes up every morning thinking I wasn't dreaming. She goes everywhere with us, as most of you know. She is a constant companion, protector and friend. She seems to know she hit the lottery on May 8, 2014 but we feel like we're the lucky ones. I still every now and then call her Jake and I miss my buddy more than words can ever say, but even though she had big shoes to fill, Maggie is the best pup in every way and is loved so much, not only by us but by our family as well as our family and friends in Florida. It's almost been a month, but I can still hear Rick yelling out Maggie as she'd run full speed every time to get loving and a treat. Sharon came by every morning to give her a treat too and love on her. John, her husband at first was distant with her, seemingly not wanting a dog... but Maggie won his heart too and he would make excuses to just come by rub Maggie's belly. They have learned what we learned last year... if you spend any time with her she steals your heart... but that's OK.
In just one year she has touched so many lives. Especially ours. We can't imagine life without her in it. I guess things happen for a reason. When you're not looking for a gift like her the gift just comes running out of the woods into your life.
      Happy Second Birthday Sweet Maggie!

That same bridge in Seneca rock was closed 2 years ago when we went 😂 I think we took the same route as you did but we went N to S and I’d imagine you came S to N. We also didn’t have cell service for days. It looks like you came through Dolly Sods too. Nice trip.

Wow, I can’t believe that road has been closed that long. Good to hear you also went to some of the same places. Thanks for watching.

I was sold on the Revel but the cassette toilet isn’t for me.

It’s not for everyone for sure. I worried about the cassette toilet until we got out in the van. It takes a while but Cousin Eddie’s are pretty simple with it. You can empty anywhere which makes boondocking a little less stressful. Downside is it doesn’t have a lot of capacity. I’d say give it a try but even if you help someone else out it is still different dumping someone else’s “stuff” than it would be with your own… not sure why.

Where do you pack the solo stove in the van? Hard to imagine how you have any room. Love your videos btw.

We put the stove in the back of the van, we’ll show where we store it in this weeks video. It has to be something pretty important to take up that much space in the van.

We store the griddle on top of the box on the back of the van, it’s strapped down.

owen, how do you think these roads would fare if on a lifted travato?

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

We do feel safer in the Revel but that said we’d feel even safer in a Jeep Rubicon so when do you draw the line between off-reading and comfort? So… go for it and turn around if you feel you go from might get stuck to probably will get stuck.
