THE Jovenshire?! On a Magic Arcanum video? Preposterous! Who let you leave the Smosh Games and Your Personal Channel to come here? Don't you have some The Brew-ing to do? Don't you have to be Joven Rage-ing at Sohinki hitting you with a plane or something? What is this tomfoolery? P.S. this is intended as a joke, I am unaware of the activities Currently put forth by Smosh Games, but Joven is my favorite of the old cast of personalities from when I was consistently watching the channel. And I enjoy seeing someone who is awesome, watch, acknowledge, and enjoy the content put forth by someone else who is also awesome. (edited to allow for some space between the joke and the "disclaimer?", also to be a bit of a troll)
my theme decks are all Ravnica guilds, I got guild kits from 5 of them and have been tweaking them with (mostly) cards only from Ravnica sets. Sadly, Pioneer cut out a number of those cards, but they're Modern compatible, though probably won't be winning any tournaments, but are fun to play.
I absolutely love Basri's design and backstory. A planeswalker with a positive sparking story and a positive relationship with religion is much needed.
I like the flavor games post story telling. I tend to run themed decks in everything I play so the thought of getting a game that can also double as its own story is great. Good stuff, keep it up lore master.
Along the similar lines, Samut's spark ignited when she felt intense joy when Hazoret thanked her(Samut) for saving her(Hazoret) during the fight with the Scorpion God.
I never understood why everyone hated on that point so much, I mean, Samut stated she trusted the gods, just not the god-pharoh, and everyone still got upset with her igniting with an interaction with a god.
It's time for another "random TH-cam commentator minute"! Are you ready? *grabs cup* "Did you know that 'Basri Ket' is an anagram for 'a brisket'? Which is probably exactly how one feels after spending the whole day under Amonkhet's two suns."
Real talk. I don't know how I feel about the gameplay section of this Flavor Win series but I ended up watching it to the end and enjoying it quite a bit. I think the real lesson learned is just how much I enjoy watching/listening to Ryan Gomez.10/10 keep doing what you do, kind sir.
I LOVE the idea of this new series, it's so simple and straightforward. It's like, "Why didn't I think of that?!" I can't wait to see more and what else you choose to cover :)
Two thoughts: I love thematic decks but I'm just an awful deck builder so I'm glad you're out there doing it right for both of us with this cool new series. Also, I like that they continue to have cool, new ideas for planeswalkers like Basri and The Wanderer.
Thanks for the no shame in not sticking around - I don't do arena, only casual paper with friends. I'm planning on putting Basri at the head of a Brawlmander deck (friends format, Brawl rules but Commander card pool) with a bunch of other Soldiers Matters cards. Excited to see Cathar's Crusade getting a reprint just in time, too!
Love the new series and thanks for summing up the story of Basri. It's a nice breath of fresh air to see a walker get their spark from something positive.
I love the idea for this series, and I'm really enjoying how you talk through the gameplay both from a normal MTG strategic perspective AND discussing the flavour aspects of the deck at the same time!
This is great, I didn’t know much about Basri and he has a cool story. We need an instant depicting him called “Pocket Sand” that taps down a creature or two. Theme decks for the win!
I love the simple and straight forward lore for Bari. It would be interesting to have scene him as a legendary creature. Also what do you suppose would play him in the live action movie. Lol, Keep up the Awesome!!!
I love this idea!!! As a Jonny and a Vorthos, it's great to see my two passions in the game coming together. As for the plane Basri planeswalked to, even if Dominaria wasn't the first, most likely he did end up there, specially in the Zhalfirian Void, since this set is Teferi themed and that's were he was at the time, having lost his spark.
While I love Basri's mechanical identity (for the most part) and his origin story, I don't think his defensive sand-based magic fits really well into it. In terms of his mechanical identity, the +1/+1 counters-theme is awesome and the simple synergies feel rewarding and powerful. The only gripe I have with his planeswalker cards is that both of his second abilities care about attacking with any(!) creatures. It would be more flavorfull to have a little more defensive abilities like Teyo or a go-wide (solidarity and all) clause on those abilities, similar to Windbrisk Heights. But mostly, I never got any feeling of sand magic from his cards (planeswalker or auxiliary spells). +1/+1 counters feel like a general boost or armament distribution, whereas sand, to me, is more about evasiveness or disrupting your opponent. As just a general combat-proficient planeswalker, Basri is super appropriate with his counters and a flavor-win but if wizards would want to elaborate some more on his sand abilities in the future, a revisit of Sand tokens like seen on Dune-Brood nephilim or Hazezon Tamar would be cool too.
Yeah I agree, the cards didn’t felt sandy. Flavorwise the art and mechanics for “Basri’s Solidarity” should’ve been more like the card “Gust Walker”. Lol He could’ve atleast made 1/1 Sand soldier tokens
I would have loved to see a mini-emblem (like the one Sorin, Lord of Innistrad gives as his -2) that essentially gives his creatures flanking. So, something along the lines of "Whenever a creature you control is blocked by one or more creatures, each creature blocking it gets -1/-1 or -1/-0 until end of turn." I think it would have fit well with the sand messing with the opposing creatures
5hank you for the new format of video. I love it. Also, thank you for some of the descriptions! Being almost blind, I really appreciate it so that I can visualize the cards.
I'm getting a strong Alara theme from Basri's Lieutenant. Magic has had a theme of having white planewalkers go to or start on Alara. Both Gideon and Elspeth planeswalked to the Bant part and it helped form their stories and build on their characters. Ajani started his story off on Alara and he and his tribe are leonin. Sure there are a couple planes with cats on them but I definitely see them being more from Dominaria or Alara then from say Thereos. Alara is also a plane that was damaged/destroyed by Nicol Bolas so maybe a connection there? Thank you for listening to my rant.
I like it. Planeswalks to Alara, learns a bit about the big dragon man figures out how to planeswalk of his own volition, comes back and learns the big dragon man visited his home to.
I think it’s a really great idea to mix lore and gameplay for many reasons : it’s less time consuming than pure research, it’s fascinating to see lore in action and finally, it is different than standard top deck gameplay. So win-win-win !
I really enjoy the games afterward, I play Magic for the flavor (My Trostani commander is built solely out of Ravnica block/War of the Spark). Great idea.
Super glad to see another planeswalker from Amonkhet, it's one of my favorite planes for being Ancient Egyptian-themed. The actual card itself could maybe have been an Elspeth planeswalker given its design, but it's still pretty cool and honestly it's not even bad at all
When you showed basri's acolyte, and i paid more attention to the background of the card, the first plane that came to mind for me was Innistraad, as the swords looked like gravestones, and the black mist just reminded me of some of the artwork. Another possibility is some unexplored part of the mephidross on Mirrodin, and Basri went there after the scars storyline.
I love the idea for the new series! Might be interesting to see Basri's deck thematically revised for Historic when Amonkhet Remastered drops. Maybe as a Brawl deck, even. I've got to say that Basri is my favorite recent Planeswalker addition. I'm a sucker for Amonkhet lore and think he's got a good set of mechanics for mono-white :D
Much as I enjoyed playing Basri (he was in my pre-release kit!), I do feel it would have been better if they used Teyo. He's a defensive White planeswalker, and he had a lot of focus on him in (the lore of) War of the Spark, but we haven't seen much of him or his abilities, so it would have been nice if they'd explored him a bit more.
I'm excited to see Basri, Amonkhet is my favorite plain so far and it's cool to see it referenced again. I'm glad to see it wasn't totally destroyed after hour of devastation
Themed decks are always fun to play with and are easily inspired. Though it makes the video a bit longer, I do enjoy the battle aspect of showing off the new cards.
I like this kind of video. I’m just getting back into magic( for like the 5th time) and magic arena is really my go to for now. I’ve always been a fan of flavor decks, mostly tribal though. Currently I’d doing lagers cat tribal. Can’t wait to see his lore grow.
I really liked your video and made me like Basri even more. Gideon was one of my favorite planeswalkers but I believe Basri could fill out his shoes and his story does sound inspiring. Also, I like your theory believe it holds truth that Basri visited Dominaria
I honestly like the idea of joy and devotion to faith igniting a spark. I think it says a lot about who he is as a character, that his devotion and passion was that genuine and strong.
I have a feeling Teyo will be saved for something to do with the Phyrexians; His abilities as a shield mage against Diamond Meteor showers of his home plane screams something from an old Weatherlight adventure. With the Planar bridge active, could other existing Planar devices become active....? We also know the Phyrexians are also dead tissue and metal like the eternals....And it would definitely give Karn cause for concern...
I wouldn't be surprised if most, if not all of the planeswalker cards in m21 were hanging out in Dominaria. Lily certainly seems to have made herself home in Vess manor, and the flavor text on garruk's harbinger implies they confronted/met each other in the plane after the cauldron-ing of Garruk. This video was great. I love the gameplay and I'm excited that you're keeping the lore the focus of the video. I can't wait to see what deck you brew up for Garruk.
I already have a casual deal based on swarming with warriors created by oketra's monument. Basri is a super flavorful and effective addition to that deck.
I think it's fair to say Basri arrived on Dominaria at some point since becoming a planeswalker. Seeing how his premiere is in a set that also features other prominent figures of the plane.
Love this series. I find myself making themed decks more often than not. So this series gives me everything I like about MTG

Yes, I happen to love theme decks as well! Not necessarily flavor, sometimes it's mechanics, sometimes it's both, but I love themes!
my theme decks are all Ravnica guilds, I got guild kits from 5 of them and have been tweaking them with (mostly) cards only from Ravnica sets. Sadly, Pioneer cut out a number of those cards, but they're Modern compatible, though probably won't be winning any tournaments, but are fun to play.
This is quality idea here. I love those moments in games when there are cool moments that happen that has good flavor.

Yep. Put everything I had left into this deck!
@@MagicArcanum well it payed off. Loved the deck just as much as I love the channel
Man I want a Naga planeswalker, there's too many human planeswalkers. Love the vid, nice work.
Yes and centaur ones too
Cephalid
Wizards said they are racist and only like human planes walkers.
Totally agree. We need more non-Human planeswalkers and Nagas are super cool.
what is Kyora anyways? a merflok?
I would also be overwhelmed by the feeling of pride and accomplishment after having defeated the trials.
Good loot box refefence
I'm curious u got a link for this reference?
I absolutely love Basri's design and backstory. A planeswalker with a positive sparking story and a positive relationship with religion is much needed.
True, if gods would walk among us it would be much easier to have positive attitude towards them and worship them.
Joey Joe Joe But also gods are just like, super magical humans in mtg
"I hate sand...

I actually managed to pull two basri ket(one foil promo, one regular) from my single prerelease kit. And a fullart Liliana.
Wow
@@SilverWolf340 And then I came in second...to last, because my kit came with next to no support for them. RIP
So did I tf? Except I didn’t get a cool lily
This answers the questions I’ve had since I saw Basri. He was the first rare/mythic I got in an M21 pack, and I’ve been curious about him since then
I'm really happy to know that I'm not the only one crushing hard on Oketra tho. I feel represented.
"Enter Sandman"
I'm digging the Flavour Win idea. Keep it coming!
The single field of ruin that symbolises his destroyed home XD so cruel, I love it.

Definitely a great idea. I really enjoy listening to the stories, now seeing gameplay after. Amazing.
Basri having his spark ignite from something positive is actually really neat and was a design idea I never knew would be neat to explore.

Much as I enjoyed playing Basri (he was in my pre-release kit!), I do feel it would have been better if they used Teyo. This is a flavorful idea. Enjoyed both sides a lot. Looking forward to Liliana's flavor win.
Having lunch at the story time and some MTG gameplay, perfect!
Once again, congratulations on the content. The history of Magic with quality.
A little bit of story time, a little bit of fighty time. Great concept for a series, please keep it up!

This series is genius. thank you so much.
Dude, I LOVE making flavor decks. Awesome video
I have a feeling Teyo will be saved for something to do with the Phyrexians; His abilities as a shield mage against Diamond Meteor showers of his home plane screams something from an old Weatherlight adventure.

I wouldn't be surprised if most, if not all of the planeswalker cards in m21 were hanging out in Dominaria.

Teferi and Chandra are also hanging out together either at casa de Teferi, or at the Tolarian College, so adding Basri into the mix is not that far-fetched to me.
