  • Hey hows it going everyone? Hope you all have a great new year! We're pulling up on 1 million of you subscribing to the channel which is utterly insane. Thank you all so much for your continued support. The channel is doing ok! Not the sort of audience video to video youd expect from a million subscriber channel but we're doing our best to rattle youtubes system to send new folks over here.
Either way 2022 has been a crazy year, Im about to be a dad starting in January. The whole process has been a trip and im just eager to be there for the new addition to our family. Lesser but equally great things happened this year too like getting to visit Alaska to see the Auroraborealis as well as seeing a friend who was deported from the country 10 years ago. He was finally able to come back and I flew out to my home town just to gather up some of my best friends for a giant reunion of sorts. We played Smash bros, reconnected. It was a good for the soul.
ANYWAYS! Thanks for watching the video and hope you all take great care of yourselves. Thanks for supporting the video :)

The photos in the Able Sisters shop are the same ones that they use in the actual games. The photo with the baby is actually the three sisters, Mabel, Sable and Label. I just love that they used these here, too. It's an insane little detail that we would probably never get to see but as a longtime fan of the series, it makes me so happy.

    • @KairuHakubi
      @KairuHakubi ปีที่แล้ว +12

oof the last one really lost the name lottery there. And that's saying something when one of your alternatives was Mabel. I wonder if the real game is like that or if the localization invented the naming theme.

@@KairuHakubi The Japanese names are Kinuyo (Mabel), Asami (Sable) and Kotono (Label) but translations seem to go for some kind of pattern. Like the German version had Tina, Sina and Mina. Label was introduced under her pseudonym Labelle when she worked for famous designer Gracie but she dropped that in the newest game and goes by Label now.

@@samcarbonneau9302 Yeah, I agree. And I prefer Label over Mina in German. They always were more consistent in English with Labelle being her pseudonym. The German version is Samthea (Samt is the German word for silk) which is clever but also so different from Mina.

    Hi ! French guy here:
In the Paris track, that untextured building is called « Le Sacré Cœur » (you can translate it with: « The Sacred Heart »)
And it is, in fact, entirely white !
So the lack of texture is actually a clever way to cut corners and still have it look like the original :>

the glossy sheen on the lowpoly toads is an artifact of the environmental rim lighting being applied to such a lowpoly model. That technique looks great on very high density models where it can wrap around smoothly, but suffers a lot when you start getting to objects with edges that have very large angular difference (the difference in angle between two adjacent sides of a 100-gon vs a pentagon or octagon for example) but are not flagged as being sharp edges even though the angle itself is quite steep.
You get a lot of rim-warping that makes lowpoly objects with rim lighting look shiny instead of just backlit.
Basically the shading technique that works well for a high poly model breaks down progressively the lower poly you get.
I discovered this when I tried adding fancier shaders to a lowpoly game I was designing... it.... looked awful and I really had to heavily modify the shaders to work better on those models and use a completely different shader for the smoother models.
Its just one more reason you don't typically see retro styled models with modern shading on them, even though in modern engines that would actually be easier than doing retro styled shading.

Wave 1 in particular lacks texturing on so much because that's Tour's art style (which they had to fight 8's engine to accept - all the vertex colors from Tour had to be converted to 1 pixel textures so 8 would load them). They've gotten somewhat better after the Wave 1 backlash but they're still just putting in the same effort as they would for any other mobile game.

While Roy Koopa's eyes have never really been depicted in official media, it's more intentional than you think, as he's named and designed after Roy Orbison, who almost never took off his sunglasses. Also remember there are 3 Able sisters! Labelle (Label) is a traveling accessories designer and she sometimes comes to your town to sell rare/exclusive accessories, though in New Horizons she also is a full clothing designer and takes the place of Gracie for fashion checks. So some of those pictures in the Able Sister's shop might actually be of Label.

Educated guess on the rear textured koopa shell, it's clear from shyguy that the character textures at some point involved baking ambient occlusion directly into the diffuse / albedo, so to facilitate this it was likely UV mapped to patch / avoid bake artefacting on both sides of the shell. Regarding rosalina's eyes, older mario kart games only used a single eye texture in most cases and mirrored it, which in practice is simpler than making two bespoke sides. lastly, it's cool to see these properly explored in full motion. I had broken a lot of these down in the process of sticking them in flight simulator and i always thought it was really cool how much work went into the vistas. nice to see them up close in situ with the proper shaders! keep it up!

It Takes Two next? That game is so packed with details its redicilous! And also hidden content and endings/levels that can only be acessed thru hacking the game.. A BB episode of that game would be on the next level 😊

Mario Kart is the gift that keeps on giving. Nintendo really went all out with the small details for the original tracks.

6:12 it can run at 60 frames per second twice at the same time, because 2 player split screen runs at 60fps. (Sadly 3 and 4 player split screen are 30fps)

It's wild how much more love and detail were put into the original + first DLC tracks, and how little there was comparatively to the Booster Course Pass tracks.

I've said this before in the comments of another video but I've actually been to the building at 18:40 during a school trip to France back in 2019. Forgot what it was called but it had a huge chapel-like interior design. Also I nearly tripped and fell of the stairs out in front of it that day. Good thing someone caught me because trust me, those steps are way higher up than they look here.

I noticed that the zoomout of Peach Gardens didn't have all the Chain Chomps. Probably another example of culling, but maybe programmed separately from the map.

I saw on a comment section once that MK8's graphics are outdated and nintendo should move onto MK9. and yes it was after 8 DX's release.
And I thought "...no? MK8 already has really good graphics? What will a Mario Kart 9 achieve?" I didn't bother to start an argument though.

I like that in the ferris wheel, the passengers are just existing artwork of characters plastered on it. Obvious example is the Toad waving artwork.

I love how a lot of first-party Nintendo games have throwbacks to older games and show that a lot of love goes into the newer games that people might not see or even appreciate. The Mario 3 sun on the fabric is awesome, as are the Mario Bros. sprites on the pots, but they even threw back to Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally on the Famicom which was never released outside of Japan (because NoA didn't think it'd sell well)

6:22, Being a programmer I can see how they could've made it that efficient, I would use a few of 2d textures to tell the shaders what to generate where, 1 is just the underlying ground colours, another is where that ground is height wise, bit of rng with the x & z coords can generate the little bumps inside each square and between height points, a 3rd texture would then tell the shaders the indices of what sort of objects to generate where, if at all. The rest would just be the actual track etc which would need to be 3d to support loops etc

8:53 that outward facing wall would be to block the light so that the light comes specifically only through the holes in the cave.
