  • This video will show you how to replace your front ball joints without the Rotunda Specialty tool. we will also be doing struts in this video as well. below are all the parts and corresponding part numbers you may need.
    You will see that this transit will not get the dust cover put back on because the units that operate out of the station this truck lives at keeps getting stones stuck in between the dust shield and rotor. because its a recurrent problem I've opted to remove them on these specific trucks as its been such a recurrent issue. The torque for the bolts on the dust shield is 89 in lb

    So basically, unless you remove the whole thing, you can't do ball joints without the special tool. Thank you, Ford.

      Yeah, and you have to remove the wheel bearing assembly to R&R the front rotors. It's my understanding that to R&Ring the rear rotors requires removing the axle shafts.

    Just did this job with the new strut assembly from oreillys auto parts. Fit perfect and saved time. I’m in New Hampshire so tons of rust and seized everything. Recommendation just put all new back in. I dropped strut with everything attached. Then installed everything new, bolts, nuts,brakes, bearings, knuckle, tie rod end, stabilizer link,Ect…even new dust shields. (About $850 for both sides in parts )Everything was due anyways. Made it a lot easier because everything was seized. Only thing original I keep was caliper and bracket. Took about 2.5hours per side in driveway. Whole new front end. Drives mint !

    On my 2021 Transit the lower balljoint can be rotated with a T-50 which can be another method of getting the balljoint t 'unbind' so that it can be removed from the lower control arm.

    Hey first off just wanted to thank u for the vids they’ve been very helpful with a transit that’s a glutton for maintenance. My question was if you could give me the part # or even just the exact bolt size of the knuckle pinch bolt? I picked up the knuckles and strut assembly but knuckles don’t come with em so against better judgement I reused the originals temporarily. Even up here in Maine it wasn’t too bad getting it all apart thanks to a healthy addiction to fluid film. Hope u catch this question thanks!

    I would recommend not to put your foot in the wheel well if you are working at home.
    There is a spot on the A-Frame towards the inside like an opening, you can put a pry bar in it and that makes the A-frame very easy to move for mounting and Dismounting main Ball joint. Good old principle of fulcrum..
    Also it’s easier to Mount or Dismount ball joint with the wheels straight.

    The pinch bolt torque is 76 lb ft, plus 180 degrees. I am installing a lift and was wondering about this. Do you use a new bolt? I guess it is the proper thing to do, but was wondering if you re-use bolts successfully and can still put the extra 180 degrees on it. Seems like it's an awful lot of torque to add 180 degrees. I started to add on and stopped at like 90 because I feel like I am approaching something like 180 lb ft on it, and last thing I want to do is break a bolt or strip it.

      The place where this truck drives every day is a pea gravel parking lot and small stones kept getting wedged in the little hole that there for the ball joint and they are practiccly impossible to get out without removing the hub and rotor assembly. I talked about it in depth in the transit strut breakdown video.

  • @videopipeline6419

    Any particular reason you left the dust shield off? What I would have liked to see you explain or show is what lead you to determine this had to be done. Did the ball joint fail or the strut assembly start making noise? They definitely don't make these vehicles easy to work on for fleet purposes.

    • @medtec6747
      @medtec6747  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes we were seeing if we did that we would catch less small stones in that hold that they make in it for the ball joint that causes what my emts call a metal on metal grinding noise every time a little pebble wedges its way in there.

    • @medtec6747
      @medtec6747  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We get that complaint a lot I first start with making sure you haven't had one of the control arm vertical bolts in the rear rust out and break which can cause the whole subframe to shift, next I check bushings in the lowe control arm and then I side load the struts. It's almost always one of those

      @@carlosotero9984 oh gotcha yes there is a little hole near the ball joint shield that pretty large stones keep getting caught in and rub against the rotor. pretty sure it comes from the driveway that these ambulances go in and out of every day. I've been taking them off on the trucks that are in that station because its been happening so frequently. The shields on the transit don't have any air scoops like you see on an E-350 they mostly just keep dust off the rotors but I saw the gravel that keeps getting stuck in there as a greater threat so I remove them from trucks on that station. I wouldn't really recommend doing it unless its a common problem for you but the five or so nights that Ive had to drive to the station in the middle of the night to get a rock out of there for a truck with "grinding brakes" is enough to for me to warrant it.
