An exception is "Mad Machine", which opens episode 2. A full-length version of that was actually recorded, and I saw a lo-res music video of it back in the day. It's clean. I probably still have it.

Actually, this is unsually WELL DONE as translated Song dubs go. Most song dubs totally BLEW IT, but this one effectively translated, meaning, subtext, and emotions, in a manner which flowed smoothly. Ironically, the choppiest parts are lines where the lyrics were in English in the original Japanese Version.

So many people whining about dubs. I guess some can't appreciate this because they do not know what it was like in the early days of anime. It was a new thing and really hard to find. They could have easily made up their own music for this but the fact they went out of their way to dub the original songs and make them sound similar shows they cared for the project. That was rare with old dubs they were mostly horrible but it was what we had. Subs were not common back then.
Since when did art not strive to communicate it's point across all barriers and boundries? 23+ years ago i rented this form some video store, and the song, stuck with me, now i'm here responding to you. Tell me again how it's such an affront to convert anime to other languages, cause form where i'm sitting, this series and song kept in my head for over 2 decades.... Thats pretty powerful imho.
I dunno. I feel like the whole police dispatch and battle with the cyborg are an integral part of the song. It's like the cannons in the 1812 Overture.
I've been listening to 今夜はハリケーン a lot recently, and only stumbled upon this English version yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised. It doesn't have quite the same energy, but here I still am... listening to it for the fifth time in less than 24 hours. The lyrics and vocal performance are just that good.
Actually, the series did alright in Japan, otherwise there wouldn't have been a Crash series. Kenichi Sonoda's character designs are proof of that, since he has done the designs of many other anime series as well as penned and drawn his own manga. These dubbs and english versions of the songs were done with the company Animego's own volition, who besides Streamline, Viz and U.S Manga Corp, were an early company to bring anime to an American audience.
I always find english adaptation of any J-songs are actually pretty good if they made the effort to do it right. This is one of them. Less power but still epic.

It's better than what you could expect from an English localization from this era (late 80s/early 90s.) While I will give credit where credit is due, I still think the English versions of the songs pale in comparison to their Japanese counterparts. The reason for this just has to do with how the Japanese perceived cross-media collaborations versus how they were perceived by westerners at the time. With that, the original Japanese production team went all out to get great musical talent to make solid music that could stand alone based on its own merits. This in turn made Bubblegum Crisis the great OVA it still is today. When localized, the same level of musical talent would not be equaled by the English dub team in the case of other OVAs - probably because they thought of the songs as just 'show tunes.' So, it is amazing for the time that the English songs in Bubblegum Crisis are at least pretty close to sounding like the original Japanese versions. Even with all that being said, I agree that the Japanese version is easily superior to the English version.

Honestly, I get what they were going for by using this vocalist. She sounds a lot like Pat Benatar, effectively making this song like Love is a Battlefield. It's a pretty clever cultural translation of a very Japanese song.

It also reminded me of some old Ten Wheel Drive stuff with Genya Ravan on vocals...I think the only reason this doesn't get the same love as the original is that the backing track isn't mixed as well on this version, so it lacks the punch of the Japanese track. But the fact that they bothered to hire a decent singer, transliterate all the vocals and re-record the whole thing instead of just throwing subtitles over the sequence deserves a level of praise all of its own.

I got the impression that considerable effort went into constructing English lyrics with similar meaning and flow to the original. In either version, I got the "intense rocker vibe" that I think was the intent.
The only thing that really bothers me, apart from the mix sounding too quiet for the music, is that I think 'Midnight Hurricane' would sound better than 'Tonight, a Hurricane'
That wouldn't work. "Konya wa Hurricane" is six syllables. "Tonight, a Hurricane" is also six syllables. "Midnight Hurricane" only has five which doesn't match the rhythm of the song. You could drag out the pronunciation of "midnight" into a longer beat to fit the rhythm, but I think the translators made the right call here when converting it into English.

I made the same mistake. Instead of "tonight, a hurricane!" It should be "to~night a hurricane!" I hope that translates into what I actually sounded it out as. When it comes to subs vs. dubs, I always watch the dub, no matter how bad it may be, because I just hate watching and reading at the same time and I like watching stuff in the language I speak. However, when it comes to anime songs like this being rerecorded in English, I prefer the original. It's usually because they were professionally recorded while the English versions are done by the dubbing companies in lower quality (like when Funimation used to record English openings). It is nice to know what they are saying in English but, especially with fan covers, lines sound awkward when changed to fit the lyrics. The only exception I can think of is Utada Hikaru's Kingdom Hearts songs, in which both languages are equally as good, since she recorded both versions simultaneously. In my opinion, when it comes to music, songs are better in their original form because they come out exactly as the crew behind them intended.

It takes some getting used to, and while I don't get into it as well as the Japanese (although this isn't normal for me), it's still a good effort. The lyrics are pretty much spot on (although "Tonight... a hurricane" sounds underwhelming), and the singing is good. The mixing and impact are underwhelming compared to the original song though.
I just would like to say The golden age of anime is dead. When it first came to america it came full force tits out. Shit, Gundam isn't even hand drawn or painted (Turn A gundam was the last in 1999). The late 80's and early 90's anime (the only kind I like) has some of the worst english dubs.
Not to mention the fact that other countries dub foreign shows into their languages as well, because subtitles do not go so well on the foreign market, either.

well, not necessarily. the original run was in '87 in japan... the release in the US was definitely later. so they could have used other synths. and you can hear that the instrumentation is quite different from the original. just listen to both of them - it's different as night and day. but hey - always a matter of taste!
This version wasn't the original English version either as someone above pointed out; it was much more in the rock feel that Priss and the Replicants had.
Really does remind me in the best way of Pat Benatar or Patty Smyth. As far as English vs. Japanese, depends on your preference. I like to sing along and don't speak Japanese. I like Wagner as well, but don't speak German, so not sitting through the complete Ring Cycle anytime soon unless someone does an English version.
