I also just appreciate dubs that actually dub the songs. It's extremely weird when there's a language shift for a song. I don't think some people realize this is the actual English Dub, not just a fan singing the English lyrics.... Even still, it was done great and while the words sound kinda awkward with the rythm at times, it's a really good job.
@@jamesritzer3531 well... sorry to say, but its been 10 years since the english dub came out (or more i think). so if its not out now, then i dont think it ever will be...
Fun fact: The director of the dub decided to dub the songs because he heard another voice actress do an english cover of these songs! the voice actress's name is Cristina Vee, and she's been in well over a 100 roles, including Mio in K-ON, Darkness in Konosuba, and Homura in Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
"Even though my heavy heart is parched with pain, I know somehow your sorrow is something I won't see." "God knows that I will follow if that is what you wanted. Take me into all your darkest shadows and you'll see that I am even stronger than you would know." "The way you're standing there, I feel as though we're almost one again, and yet, we're miles apart in time. Beneath the pale blue moon, I see your eyes are glistening with so much loathe. It's tearing you apart to be here. You know it." Haruhi sings to a whole audience but is relaying a message to Kyon in particular. One of the great things about this anime.
Joe Devaney "Even though my heavy heart is parched with pain, I know somehow your sorrow something I won't see." Haruhi's pain is that of not ever getting to experience joys of youth or the universe's phenomena. Kyon's assigned obligation is to help time travelers, espers, and aliens keep a stressed out god in a schoolgirl's form from every destroying the universe. On top of that, Kyon's strides to keep the universe intact can never be known to Haruhi herself. Haruhi probably noticed that stress consistently between the days that they first met and that cultural festival, but she will never know why perhaps because Kyon actively hides the cause of it. "God knows ... you would know." Despite all the contentious chemistry between them, Haruhi sees Kyon as the only person who can ever approach her as a human being. Since Kyon seems to provide Haruhi that emotional support, Haruhi wants to reciprocate. "The way you're standing there ...You know it." Like I said earlier, Kyon's stress from alleviating Haruhi's has left Haruhi with the impression that while Kyon is there for her, she also thinks that Kyon might one day vanish out of bitterness from the burden that she recently understood that he put himself under. (Remember that the cultural festival does take place after the movie making in Sigh.) Recalling "Kyon might vanish out of bitterness," you can also see this as a foreshadowing of the movie. Disappearance (the light novel) released two years before the anime even started.

I adore the English version and it what I normally sing even when I’m listening to the Japanese ver but I never understood why anyone hates the English dubbed version like it was the literal voice actress singing and that’s just- you never see that in anime especially with English dubs heck English dubs rarely to never dub songs and when they have it’s all been for older anime’s (even though TMOH is old now but you get the point). . So instead of saying that it’s not as good or that the Japanese ver is better let’s all appreciate how talented the voice actress is
voice actress is good, but English language itself is bad, it totally different to Japanese, the way its pronounce, how the translator make it from Japanese to English, even the different culture, how Japanese girl act and how western girl act, you can't imagine how cringe of western girl while they do the same weird thing which Japanese girl (or asia girl) do. Take more advanced, you often see the image of western girl is strong and bravery while Japanese girl is most of adorable and shy, and the define of "cute" word between western and asia totally different, too. And that thing affect to English voice actress while they trying to be "cute" like Japanese girl but peopl don't see any cute like Japanese girl but cringe. Problem is language and culture, even same country, similar culture like Chinese or Korea but they also hard to perform as good as Japanese
I feel it's worth noting that in the manga, her singing is described as "slightly off key" by kyon, so the English version is closer to the source material there than the Japanese, considering Japanese depicts everyone's singing voice as idols when they sing lol
I don't know why anyone would hate this version, I love it more that they took the time to even translate it, most animes don't. Its really good all in all
When I was in 8th grade, I mustered up the courage to ask a girl out. I thought I had done everything right, I even got her a flower, but when I ask, she just said "No" right back at me. I felt pretty devistated, so I turned to TH-cam to try to chear myself up. That's when I found that someone had upload all episodes of the English dub of Haruhi S1 in 3 parts per episode. It was my first time watching a full anime. I remember while watching it during one of the parts, I thought to myself, "Who needs a girlfriend when you have anime?" From that moment, I knew I would become a weeb...
This my song for those people I have helped in my life yet just betrayed me. All things must come to an end. Just like this song. I am moving on and never looking back.
I remember when some HS girls did this at a local talent show costume and all. Man good times I wish someone had recorded it. The girl in the bunny suit could really sing.
uhg every time I look at nagato I want to cry cuz she's been through so much shit for hundreds of years and she just rolles with it and after reading the first 6 books I love hr even more and its so sad because she finally starts having a tiny bit of affection for kyon but we all know haruhis gonna be with kyon in the end so nagatos gonna never be happy
Sparky Dood which part? Her kinda liking kyon? cause I think it basicly confirmed she had small feelings for him when in the snowy mountain arc she saw a vision of him coming into her room like haruhi and mikuru did. And in the disappearance of haruhi she gives him the power to correct the world to what he feels is right, meaning she realy trusts him. Like she could have given it to koizumi or mikuru but she chose kyon
after hearing this song I must say this is the first time hearing english dub song in fact I think it awesome also jp I don't understand why people fighting for this between dub vs sub it's awesome to listen this wendee lee and aya hirano did great job for this although I am Arabia we don't mind listen to this dub and sub it's awesome to hear it XXXD
+Pooks "in" Boots Right? And I love the imperfections in her voice during the performance. All the cracks and the "poor mixing" make it more raw and believable as a live performance
I watched Haruhi Suzuimiya in Japanese originally and I always thought the English version of God Knows was just a cover. Never knew that was actually Wendee Lee singing, damn!
Keeping in mind they had to match the mouth sync, make it sound like the original, have similar lyrics to the Japnese version AND have it make sense in English, that was very well done. ^_^
Watched the sub and didn't watch that many clips of the dub. I just thought 1 day like 'how was this scene done in the dub?' and here I am. Nice. Nice.
It is hard to do a dub of a song because in addition to retaining the meaning of the song and keeping with the rhythm, the voice actress has to be able to sing. The English version sounds great despite all of the challenges. This earns my respect, admiration, and thanks.
I kinda like the english version better.I think the voice actess is doing a great job and somehow the english version sounds more powerfull than the japanese version to me......But maybe that's just because i can understand what she sings...
yeah due me too , she sings the meaning of it , they wont seing each four of them never anymore in the school , it is time to goodbye , its a last day of them to see , and never will be anymore , and haruhi suzumiya thingking that she being bless to god why kyon and her ( haruhi suzumiya ) was being together forever closer ,
It's empowered and gives that powerful affect because it is in your native language. Even though I'm an English speaker only I can acknowledge it is off tune sometimes, it's just not as good as the Japanese version overall but it is very very good.
i wish more dubs nowadays would also dub singing, or even just the opening to animes. i know it would probably take extra money and effort, but it’d be cool, especially since there are a few voice actors who got their start posting their covers of anime and/or vocaloid songs on youtube
(this is me begging for a bocchi the rock dub where they dub over kita’s singing) (i know im literally the only person who wants this but i dont know i think it’d be fun)
Is it just me or does she keep glancing to her right while singing because she's directing her feelings in this song towards him and she wants him to see that?
as the esper said.. he didn't want to make a move on her, as it'd just confuse her and she already set her sights on kyon (i wonder if it's because of his John Smith routine)
7F0X7 As my colleague LegendaryTeemo has said, yes she's looking at the sheet music. Haruhi was unaware of Kyon's presence in the Lecture Hall and thus was not casting her gaze at him. However I'm not denying that she may have feelings for Kyon as that issue has been addressed before, see The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Six and various other occurrences when Kyon was looking at Mikuru and Haruhi stopped it. I'm simply pointing this all out to look thought provoking and I hate answers with no explanation... Like my colleague's answer before...
It has been so long since i first watched this anime and this song brings back so many memories of the show, such nostalgia. I wish they could've continued this anime.
the lyrics aren't bad but the vocals are out of tune sometimes. I think it might have been done purposefully though, to create a high school band feeling. Prefer the japanese version though.
Luke Liu your right it is more realistic(compared to the Japanese version) in the sense that it does take place as a high school band and not a professional music band
This was more back when voice actors for English dubbed anime were shit. Localization studios are slowly realizing they need to hire talented voice actors but its a slow turn around.
In the book kyon commented that while haruhi was realy good at singing, it wasent perfect, and felt "off" somehow. Then when haruhi said she didn't write song and you could hear the original version if the students bought the school bands original version, the student body felt a wave of relief because "that's what was wrong". She wasent meant to sing it, someone else was, that's why it sounded a little off.
Listen carefully to the lyrics, then considered exactly who and what Haruhi Suzumiya is. It's a love confession and it could also be a threat of what could happen if things don't work out right
I like this version much better, it seems more raw and powerful than the Japanese version, however some argue that the Japanese version seemingly has more emotion to it. Japanese music is usually a form of sung poetry, with no doubt has emotion, but if you do not speak Japanese, the max you get out of it is pure emotion, the rest is imagination. If it is in a language you understand however, you can relate the meaning of the words to the emotion of the song itself, so basically a more refined version, or "Whole". It is a wonderful song nonetheless and both versions carry a message, though at times we do not know what it means.

Wendee Lee was one of the first Dubbers I recognized early on as I became a fan of Anime in general. I loved her as Maya Natsume in Tenjho Tenge and was happy to hear her as Haruhi. I'm Glad she doesn't seem to be as mixed up in the BS going on today with English VA's.
happy face ._. well, um. i saw it on anime in real life by Nigahiga and i saw one of em had a blue shirt similar to the point u were showing, idk if im right :(
This version isn't bad,it's just the japanese is better. Hell, this is actually great for dub. It's just Aya Hirano's performance is better than wendee lee's as she's much more eccentric. She's also better at the musical performance. Some parts of this fit nicely, such as the chorus. Others are rushed such as "If i had my way", which IMO should've been stretched a bit. Despite this, still a brilliant performance. 7/10
I don't like her lyrics as much, I fell in love with this versions lyrics and when I listened to her version I was so sad that she took out my favorite part..
"Amanda Lee's" lyrics is the top search result for "haruhi god knows" on Google. Yep, Google forgot that BangZoom or whoever dubbed this anime already covered this song in English too. But then again it doesn't have a second verse.
I like the original better, but thank you for posting this. Now I don’t have to look up the lyrics in English. I will admit it’s not bad for a dubbed song. The voice actor did pretty good.
Can’t believe Haruhi’s VA was in her late 50’s when she voiced her, that’s honestly impressive as hell

I feel it's worth noting that in the manga, her singing is described as "slightly off key" by kyon, so the English version is closer to the source material there than the Japanese, considering Japanese depicts everyone's singing voice as idols when they sing lol
I love this version of the song! It's so good, and it actually sounds like a teenager at a festival
I don't know why anyone would hate this version, I love it more that they took the time to even translate it, most animes don't. Its really good all in all
and the people who dubs K-ON cbf'd to translate the songs to english
Amalee did it better
Because "good enough" isn't the same as good.
@@raymundolancealfreds1050 Cut this crap out. Amalee's version is so off beat with the song. This song isn't supposed to be sung in a soft voice.
The girl in the bunny suit could really sing.
all these years later and I can still sing along with it perfectly.
Sometimes this song pops into my head and I randomly sing it out of nowhere. Can't believe it's been 10 years
also u gotta love kyon's reaction OoO LOL
Kyon be like: "wtf that girl could sing! And I'm enjoying it"
uhg every time I look at nagato I want to cry cuz she's been through so much shit for hundreds of years and she just rolles with it and after reading the first 6 books I love hr even more and its so sad because she finally starts having a tiny bit of affection for kyon but we all know haruhis gonna be with kyon in the end so nagatos gonna never be happy
Illya chan doesn't that happen latter in the series? Assuming my memory's right
Sparky Dood which part? Her kinda liking kyon? cause I think it basicly confirmed she had small feelings for him when in the snowy mountain arc she saw a vision of him coming into her room like haruhi and mikuru did. And in the disappearance of haruhi she gives him the power to correct the world to what he feels is right, meaning she realy trusts him. Like she could have given it to koizumi or mikuru but she chose kyon
Sparky Dood or did you mean the hundreds of years thing, cause that’s in the endless 8 right before the disappearance
Man old English dubs were the best. This and black lagoon are a few of my favorites
after hearing this song I must say this is the first time hearing english dub song in fact I think it awesome also jp I don't understand why people fighting for this between dub vs sub it's awesome to listen this wendee lee and aya hirano did great job for this although I am Arabia we don't mind listen to this dub and sub it's awesome to hear it XXXD
The key change into the last chorus at 1:49 is sooooo fucking intense!!
Francis Cooper totally agree, its always when the song hits me the hardest
+Pooks "in" Boots Right? And I love the imperfections in her voice during the performance. All the cracks and the "poor mixing" make it more raw and believable as a live performance
+Francis Cooper It's even better in japanese, imo.
Why was this never in a guitar hero game?
Good question...
Probably copyright issues.
it actually is
ikr!!
Hells MusicBox Where?
0:01 you can hear someone yelling "get off the stage!" if you turn it up
i like this dub, WAY better then most anime only songs in Japanese dubs
Ugh. I love you more and more as time goes on and breaks my heart. Thank you ❤️
I kinda like the english version better.I think the voice actess is doing a great job and somehow the english version sounds more powerfull than the japanese version to me......But maybe that's just because i can understand what she sings...
yeah due me too , she sings the meaning of it , they wont seing each four of them never anymore in the school , it is time to goodbye , its a last day of them to see , and never will be anymore , and haruhi suzumiya thingking that she being bless to god why kyon and her ( haruhi suzumiya ) was being together forever closer ,
It's empowered and gives that powerful affect because it is in your native language. Even though I'm an English speaker only I can acknowledge it is off tune sometimes, it's just not as good as the Japanese version overall but it is very very good.
i think that the japanese version has more passion tho, look at the lyrics of the original
It didn’t seem as passionate to me, but I did hear the effort for it to be passionate. It definitely is affected by whether you understand it or not.
The dub version will always be the best
i wish more dubs nowadays would also dub singing, or even just the opening to animes. i know it would probably take extra money and effort, but it’d be cool, especially since there are a few voice actors who got their start posting their covers of anime and/or vocaloid songs on youtube
(this is me begging for a bocchi the rock dub where they dub over kita’s singing) (i know im literally the only person who wants this but i dont know i think it’d be fun)
Honestly, the English dub of Haruhi Suzumiya is the best English dub I have ever heard. it feels natural, complete and just plain cool.
She's looking at the sheet music.
Brings back old memories
Every time I listen to this, I love the English version of "God Knows" more and more over the original Japanese version.
same tbh
The japanese version was iconic to be sure. But if you don't speak japanese, it's just a bunch of beeps and boops. I like this one, it tells a story.
@@letsrank9349 Imagine calling another language "beeps and boops".
that face she makes for 2 seconds just kills me
this song describes the entire series :D
It has been so long since i first watched this anime and this song brings back so many memories of the show, such nostalgia. I wish they could've continued this anime.
I don't know what everyone's bitching about, this is a pretty good eng dub
the lyrics aren't bad but the vocals are out of tune sometimes.
Illya chan so if you take that into account then English voice actor did better than the original version wow
true...
I honestly think both are great, and I think Wendee Lee did a great job and I'd love to see her make a full cover of God Knows.
0:47
This guitar sound is heaven to my ears
Guan The Miner fr fr🔥🔥🔥
God is in a bunnysuit, singing a love confession song at a school festival. How does this not rate higher on my "weird anime moments"??
Listen carefully to the lyrics, then considered exactly who and what Haruhi Suzumiya is. It's a love confession and it could also be a threat of what could happen if things don't work out right
This wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Good job to the dub team of this one for a change. :P
I Miss this anime so much
14 years and this still gives me chills
0:31 look at the guy next to the girl who will clap :o
There i see fakes of Nagato, Kyon, Haruhi, Mikuru. Even Tachibana who isn't supposed to be around at this point yet
I love Kyon's expression during this...
he is listening to god singing.
Yes he is XD haha
+indefinableification A god singing god knows? Godception confirmed
+Gamer24/7 even better! a god who doesn't KNOW she is a god singing God knows a triple whammy
This never fails to make me smile, and I just can’t help but jump around with joy.
Mind-blowingly brilliant!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
This was the best scene of the whole anime series
i always loved the way "its my life, im moving on and never going back there" sounded
Mira the days where even the songs were dubbed. Was dissappointed when Golden birch song was undubbed.
like the japanese version better but I'm surprised how good this one turned out
I'm just shocked they took the time to DO an english version. All other animes I've seen that have music scenes don't bother with it. :)
Still an absolute banger all these years later
I'm just revisiting a old friend
it feels so realistic. like a real talent show or something
Blazing on by, there's nothing more than I can do
I'm sorry that I'll never be with you again
Even though my heavy heart is parched with pain, I know somehow your sorrow's something I won't see
It's my life, I'm moving on and never going back there
But you just turn away and leave me on the lonely rail
God knows that
I would follow you if that is what you wanted
Take me into all your darkest shadows and you'll see that I'm even stronger than you could know
God knows that
I am standing here and you could disappear, slipping right over the edge of the future
If I had my way, we'd be together forever
Eternally God bless
The way you're standing there
I feel as though we're almost one again and yet we're miles apart in time
Beneath the pale blue moon, I see your eyes are glistening with so much loathe
It's tearing you apart to be here
You know it
God knows that
I would follow you if that is what you wanted
Take me into all your darkest shadows and you'll see that I'm even stronger than you could know
God knows that
I am standing here and you could disappear, slipping right over the edge of the future
If I had my way, we'd be together forever
Eternally God bless
So this is what Blanc's singing sounds like.
i think im the only one who likes this version more
Blazing on by there's nothing more than I can do
I'm sorry that I never be with you again
Even though my heavy heart is parched with pain
I know somehow your sorrow is something I won't see.
It's my life I'm moving on and never going back there
The future's turned away and leave me on the lonely rail
GOD KNOWS that I'll follow you if that is what you wanted
Take me into all your darkest shadows, and you she that I'm even stronger than you could know
GOD KNOWS that I'm standing here and you'll disappear
Slipping right over the edge of the future

The way standing there I feel as though we're almost one again yet we're miles apart in time
Beneath the pale blue moon I see your eyes are glistening with so much love It's tearing you're

God knows that I'm standing here and you'll disappear
Slipping right over the edge of the future

this is as good as the Japanese version
no it isn't
Meta Cooler how could anyone compare the English dub to the Japanese original lmao
Marcella A you know because people have opinions
Because I don't speak nor understand japanese.
That moment when an anime actress is better at singing than most “singers” these days.
12 years later and I’m still coming back to this
I like both Japanese and Engish Version it's cache easy to memorize.
1:05 my face in class on Monday mornings
Lol same XD 😂👏
Wendee Lee was one of the first Dubbers I recognized early on as I became a fan of Anime in general. I loved her as Maya Natsume in Tenjho Tenge and was happy to hear her as Haruhi. I'm Glad she doesn't seem to be as mixed up in the BS going on today with English VA's.
Honestly I liked Haruhi's eng dub better :P
Yea it was better than subbed version
Mangosah a lot of people agree with you
Mangosah me too
Michael McGrath lol
lol your opinion doesn't matter people people abide by their there own opinions so keep it to yourself
1:52 sailor moon?
what is sailor moon?
Guan The Miner what you don't know sailoir moon starts dying
happy face
._. well, um. i saw it on anime in real life by Nigahiga and i saw one of em had a blue shirt similar to the point u were showing, idk if im right :(
Guan The Miner sorry I was just surprise :)
happy face
dammit am i right or not?
I love this
This version isn't bad,it's just the japanese is better. 7/10
I think many non-Japanese prefer this one, and all Japanese prefer the original.
Because you can understand the song.
It's great for the work that was put into this
I Hate How Her Lips Are Shaped When She Sings
I like how this actually sounds like a terrible teenage rock band, it's more realistic that way.
Some people: Sub is better!
Other people: Dub is better!
Me: *listening to both versions back to back*
I think I actually prefer Cristina Vee's version of God Knows.
The mix is worse than the Japanese version. Other than that it's not too bad.
Crazy NUTZ Level Playing and Nicely Dubbed! YUP!
The vocals aren't bad, but the lyrics are terrible lmao
JESUS CENA LMFAOOOOOO
I think the vice versa.
They had to translate from the Japanese. Japanese songs sound great but translate terribly into English, just look at a cruel angels thesis.
What? There was no official English version of Cruel Angel's Thesis.
Will Jennings look it up
ama lee's version compared to the dub is sooooo much better
I don't like her lyrics as much, I fell in love with this versions lyrics and when I listened to her version I was so sad that she took out my favorite part..
not really
personally I prefer parts of the dub and other parts from amalee's Dub
I like both, but this one is smoother in my opinion
amanda's version isn't better then this, its a shite " lullaby " version that completly butchers the song.
@Unknowngirlfornow THANK you!!! SOMEONE finally appreciates BOTH versions too!!!
This didn't rhyme.
its dubbed what do you expect
"Amanda Lee's" lyrics is the top search result for "haruhi god knows" on Google. Yep, Google forgot that BangZoom or whoever dubbed this anime already covered this song in English too. But then again it doesn't have a second verse.
I like the original better, but thank you for posting this. Now I don’t have to look up the lyrics in English. I will admit it’s not bad for a dubbed song. The voice actor did pretty good.
