Can we just all appreciate how this is one of the most beautifully cliche scenes in anime history? And I mean that in the best way possible. This scene has everything - An amazing insert song, some of the most well animated action in cel animation history, an emotionally charged and satisfying character arc resolution, awesome moments from the main cast with no dialogue and a conclusion that is so heartwarming and positive it can make anyone happy cry. I remember when I first watched this movie the day after finishing the TV series, satisfied but disappointed that it got cut short the way it did. And despite popular belief this isn't a summarising of the original story, it's totally different just following some of the same narrative beats consistently enough for people to fall back on calling it a retelling because it's easier to. But despite that it takes the investment the viewers of the TV series have, bringing the character arcs that were left resolved unsatisfying with a scene preceding this one that makes for an unbelievably cathartic moment. Hikaru's confession to Misa is all we wanted to hear - something that cemented their love for each other in a way that was conclusive and without demeaning Lynn too much. And when it gets to this scene in such an emotional journey... Tears, man. I can't even stop them no matter how many times I watch this scene. There are few things I could really say that are CLASSIC, both contextually and personally. But DYRL is it. It's a classic in the same way It's A Wonderful Life or The Wizard of Oz is classic. Maybe it'll never earn that prestige those movies have but in my eyes it deserves it. It's fucking classic.

Technically the Zentradi and Meltradi are not master race, just mass produced clones from the Protoculture which they died out billions of years ago, who where the real master race. They are the one's that put life onto all the planets that have life form via genetic mutation and research, before they went into a galactic civil war which killed both sides. Leaving the Zentradi with one command left to complete, eliminate the remaining Protoculture ( if there was any left until they found humans which resembled a lot with the Protoculture) Now the humans are left to explore and find out more about the Protoculture. The remain remenets and super weapons the Protoculture had. Fun fact the Protoculture are called the Galactic Empire
I swear, anime songs from the 80s feel.... I don't know. Feels like something. Soft, smooth, calm, unforgetting. Hard to say, like trying to describe love
In this case, my friend, that is the flower of love and hope that blooms on the battlefield. In other cases, that would be positive feelings born from having experienced the worst this world could offer (WW2 and cold war), and then surpassed that desperation. Without that kind of unique experience, the 80's artists couldn't have left us such masterpieces, engraved with the signs of their era, yet still proved to be so charming to us.
That's 80's in general. It's was filled with youthful ignorance and hope, heart break and love ballads that just make you nostalgic whether you experienced that time or not.
Too many new Jpop songs strike me as shrieking or kiddy. This was obviously also sung by a young woman, but she didn't overdo it. It is clear, it is heartfelt, and it is beautiful. I just don't feel this when listening to most Frontier and Delta songs.
This makes me cry every time, the song is so intense and the action is mind blowing. The message of Macross has always been "love conquers all" and that it takes love to end war.
I remember seeing this as a little kid, I think I was in the 4th grade. I didn't know Japanese at the time, but I still thought this song was so beautiful, and it stuck with me. When I learned Japanese, I think this is one of the most beautiful love songs in the world.
it only takes a lovely song of a pop idol to unite 2 different race and end a war. this was so beautiful. top notch quality animation here. full of passion on how they made this
I have never watched anything Macross related but why does this song get me everytime?! Damn grown man tearing up in a train at 6 in the morning. DAMMIT.
I remember stumbling across this video years ago, and while scrolling through TH-cam at 2:45AM I found it again. I've never even watched the anime, but I remember this video. I'm so happy that I found it again!
There's a moment here at 5:48, where she puts her hand forward and the Valkyrie appears in almost as if she put him there, that's visual poetry. If you've watched Gurren Lagann, there's a very similar spot in the finale where Nia points her hand at the enemy and the mech appears.
That is right! Damn fine visual poetry!!!! Ir also shows the bond between Lynn and Hikaru, I think... eventually he chose Misa, but she was always “behind” him in some form or another... like people who love us always are... and that is the ending of this evil force represented in this alien... best space battle ever!
@@eanayac I love what you said about this bond. it's true, Hikaru made a rational choice with Misa but it doesn't cancel the bond he shares with Minmay. Also this video shows them as a team in this fight against the enemy, each one with their weapons.

Even more epic when you realize all this is hand drawn. Sure newer animes (like the splendid successor Macross Frontier) had better graphics but this did not use any computers of any kind to make any of the three-dimensional rotation or particles.
It's good for Macross to be released in the North America but it's sad that there are still a lot of forgotten anime that Harmony Gold hold IPs with during the time of 1990's to early 2000s. It took a court ruling to settle things Big West (Japanese Company in the US) releases everything under the Macross banner and Harmony Gold on their own thing with Robotech licenses. But It's so infuriating as Harmony Gold was still holding off the licenses of a lot of anime IPs so no one can profit from them except themselves in North America.
Tbh only Macross can do it. Giant space battle with idol/idols sining with transforming aircraft carriers and transforming aircraft shooting a bunch of missiles and big lasers at enemy faceses. You don't see in most anime.
this is not a fucking joke. i am bawling my eyes out and I can't stop. goddamnit why is this so impactful. I fucking love this movie. I have an eternal debt of gratitude to all who made this. fucking masterpiece fuck.
Never mind the Budweiser missile and the destruction of the galaxy's biggest aquarium--there are maybe half a dozen songs that consistently bring me to tears. This is one of them, and Mari Iijima and Kazuhiko Kato absolutely earned a lifetime pass for this.

It hurts to compare the heavily CG leaden productions of today with these purely hand-drawn gems of yesteryear. And the fact that Macross (the TV series) was done on a shoestring budget doesn't help. Besides, the missile porn that both the TV show and this feature pioneered is flat out gorgeous.

POV: You’re an alien master race and the primitive species you’re conquering bumps an idol love song while destroying you
ANUNNAKIS COMMUNNISTS
Gol Badolzar wasnt expecting an enemy fighter to appear in front of him like that and timed perfectly with Minmey's hand as if presenting him his tool of death.
Yep especially after spending half a billion years of experience of space combat superiority
Technically the Zentradi and Meltradi are not master race, just mass produced clones from the Protoculture which they died out billions of years ago, who where the real master race. They are the one's that put life onto all the planets that have life form via genetic mutation and research, before they went into a galactic civil war which killed both sides. Leaving the Zentradi with one command left to complete, eliminate the remaining Protoculture ( if there was any left until they found humans which resembled a lot with the Protoculture)
Now the humans are left to explore and find out more about the Protoculture. The remain remenets and super weapons the Protoculture had.
Fun fact the Protoculture are called the Galactic Empire
@@mrdriver2988 the zentradi are just bio weapons?

"Just an ordinary love song..."
This movie is great, guys.
ordinary love song from a long lost civilization 500.000 years ago.
A timeless masterpiece. I watched the original TV series in the past decade and Macross Plus OVA shortly thereafter.Great times.
I love the absurd amount of lasers and explosions. It actually makes you feel like a giant battle is taking place
God, this brings back so many memories. I had the entire book series and the original Macross DVD limited edition box set until I lost it a fire
Man, this is painful to read. May your collections be at space, fighting to save humanity.
This song kept looping through my mind during the final ruck of Infantry OSUT. I was so happy to finally make it.
One of the most defining moment in anime history where love prevails.
This is what todays cartoons/anime is missing.

This is the best story of macross... nostalgic im 41 years of age now. But this anime is one of may favorite❤
I was too young in the 90s to check Im 31 rn. But Im curious if people outside of Japan managed to watch this flim somehow?
this and Macross 7 for me, "try again" hits very hard.
Having been someone who's only watched Robotech, even just this I so wanna watch Macross.
Just the nostalgia of the old days--for me that is.
Of course, I wasn't even born in such beautiful era. Quite sad.
That's 80's in general. It's was filled with youthful ignorance and hope, heart break and love ballads that just make you nostalgic whether you experienced that time or not.
Check out the entire genre of citypop.
One of the best scenes in not only anime, or an animated film, but film history in general
Just watched this movie for the first time today. I must say Minmei's Japanese singer is MUCH better then her Robotech version.
I remember seeing this as a little kid, I think I was in the 4th grade. I didn't know Japanese at the time, but I still thought this song was so beautiful, and it stuck with me. When I learned Japanese, I think this is one of the most beautiful love songs in the world.
5:13
This song still brings tears to my eyes.
To remember the feeling of being in love the first time.
So cool
it only takes a lovely song of a pop idol to unite 2 different race and end a war. this was so beautiful. top notch quality animation here. full of passion on how they made this
I have never watched anything Macross related but why does this song get me everytime?!
Damn grown man tearing up in a train at 6 in the morning.
DAMMIT.
I remember stumbling across this video years ago, and while scrolling through TH-cam at 2:45AM I found it again. I've never even watched the anime, but I remember this video. I'm so happy that I found it again!
I love how despite all the beautiful singing shit is still going down.
Lynn Minmay is why I love this era of Macross so much. His voice is so beautiful.
*Her
There's a moment here at 5:48, where she puts her hand forward and the Valkyrie appears in almost as if she put him there, that's visual poetry.
Loved your comment!!
@@eanayac I love what you said about this bond. it's true, Hikaru made a rational choice with Misa but it doesn't cancel the bond he shares with Minmay. Also this video shows them as a team in this fight against the enemy, each one with their weapons.
@@aGulfilis I couldn't agree more with you!!
@@eduardoanayatfschannel8498 Thanks, I was happy to read your comment, actually, because very few people realized the value of Minmay and hated her whereas she had a golden heart. I've always preferred her to Misa :)
We all here are men of culture
Men of protoculture
Everytime I come back to listen to this it still gives me goosebumps.
Here we go again
Thanks for uploading this. I remember watching this on a Saturday morning when i was a child.
The song was so good, even alien forces wanted to protect it. Only in anime.
This film has aged really well.
I always have to fight back tears when the chorus and the repeated line hits.
I pity the new generation who grow up without masterpieces like this.
July 7, 1984. Happy 40th anniversary to Macross: Do You Remember Love. No doubt one of the best anime movies ever made.
"And now, appearing on the Macross stage... Lynn Minmei!"
Jesus Christ, anime was fucking epic in the 80s...
Even more epic when you realize all this is hand drawn. Sure newer animes (like the splendid successor Macross Frontier) had better graphics but this did not use any computers of any kind to make any of the three-dimensional rotation or particles.
Joshua Vargas Of course. I love my Angels Egg cels believe me.
Joshua Vargas Was about to mention that this was all painstakingly hand drawn. Theirs so much more emotion present in these hand drawn classics.
Klabauter Mann best afternoons i had back then
Klabauter Mann If only the kids that watch LCD pandering moe/loli/harem crap could see the true potential of anime...
This is what Harmony Gold does not want the world to see
It's good for Macross to be released in the North America but it's sad that there are still a lot of forgotten anime that Harmony Gold hold IPs with during the time of 1990's to early 2000s.
"Is culture returning to us?"
muh goosebumps
Hell yeah
I can see why this was my dad’s favorite song growing up- thanks dad for introducing me to an awesome anime and anime in general
It sucks that it's hard to make stuff that looks as cool as this.
Tbh only Macross can do it. Giant space battle with idol/idols sining with transforming aircraft carriers and transforming aircraft shooting a bunch of missiles and big lasers at enemy faceses. You don't see in most anime.
Wow... this is so much better than the lame "We Will Win" American version of this scene.
this is not a fucking joke. i am bawling my eyes out and I can't stop. goddamnit why is this so impactful. I fucking love this movie. I have an eternal debt of gratitude to all who made this. fucking masterpiece fuck.
Real
Never mind the Budweiser missile and the destruction of the galaxy's biggest aquarium--there are maybe half a dozen songs that consistently bring me to tears. This is one of them, and Mari Iijima and Kazuhiko Kato absolutely earned a lifetime pass for this.
Kids today: Oh my god when Robin started singing at the end of that boss fight in the Honkai Stair Rail patch I cried, it was so epic.
Me: *Quietly nodding, but inside a storm rages on.*
Memories from my childhood ❤
これが全部手描きって凄い
This sums up everything I love about anime in 7 minutes
I feel you on that... this film transformed how I view anime and it's unlike any film I've ever seen. Truly a masterpiece 😭
I find it amazing how Minmays song changed the tide of battle and helped deliver the final blow of the war
No way, I saw this movie in 1998 and I swore it was from '94 and it turns out it was from '84, when they made it I was 2 years old. I'm 42 years old and I just watched it again last weekend and I still think it's beautiful!
So incredibly lucky to have grown up with Macross when I was just a kid, back in the 80's.. What a wonderful time for anime!
After all these years, still getting goosebumps. One of the best scenes in anime history!
Those mechas are so badass!!!!
"Missle porn" - now that's a term I'm going to adopt for the rest of my life.
***** it's called a "macross missile massacre", and is officially a trope.

When i first saw a glimpse of this opening battle scene on VHS, my eyes widened so much, like a kid in a candy store. I knew I wanted to be an animator. Now I'm still animating. :-) Hope people are enjoying my work. So nostalgic this song. ahhh 🥲
