- We finally made it. The most requested car for over three years- we finally have our hands on a beautiful Real Street Built Toyota Supra. Owned by Javier of ThatRacingChannel, originally we weren't going to do this review due to lack of seat time in this kind of car- but he then was kind enough to let me take a shot at it starting on "low boost" of 25 psi. Stock transmission, stock crank, stock block pushing out 1000 hp? It's insane how overbuilt these drivetrains came out of the factory, they will pretty much run forever as long as you don't run the sump or radiator dry. Why can't all manufacturers build modern engines like the 2jz's?

A heavy pig it may be, but the bet toyota placed on cast iron instead to make the block stronger sure as hell paid off, just look at the crazy amounts of boost these things can take on a stock block. As long as your power to weight ratio makes up for the weight of the engine, it doesn't matter how heavy the block is, there's no replacement for a displacement.
Because of Toyota quality.

This has been such a long time coming. The opening is so sweet. I saw it go live earlier and wanted to wait until I got home to really digest it and wow! Yea, all I will say is WOW. late 90's early 2000's toyota quality and engineering was off the charts. I cant speak for their newer stuff. But everything from those year's were solid. I own a 1996 3rd gen 4runner pushing 300,000 miles and still going strong.
I got a 1987 1st gen 4 runner with 600,000 miles I got handed down from my dad and the only work we've ever put on it are oil changes lol
Same. My 1993 miata has been treating me well. I was left stranded and had to get a tow home due to static motor issues at least it was the only issue that stopped it. Everything else is good.
Man been watching you for a year and in that year you've grown so much. I got here from theslaptrain and back then you were mostly reviewing your friends cars (which are still badass) but now your review 1000hp supras and vipers and its awesome man keep living it up man, congrats its really cool to watch you live every car guys dream

But everybody knows that they are going to get turbo'd ASAP if the block is as over engineered as the MKIV
JL Cannone Well, I was figuring they would have both an NA and Turbo'd version. Like the MKIV's. I wouldn't say no to a stroked NA High Comp MKIV with a good sized cam. If it had a DCT, it would be even more fun to drive. :-P
Yeah, I like both. I'm considering an NA build with the 160 trans, high compression, ITB's and stroker myself for a daily driver.
It's shame that I can't influence engineering decisions. :-P
The new supra might have a BMW inline 6.

The Toyota Supra is my dream car. The good thing about is that it's affordable apart from those exotic ferraris and Lambos.
Although it isn't a bright idea to get when you first start driving.
I do have a question though. I live in Belgium and i don't know any good tuning garage shop thingies. Neither do i know if you can even get Supra's here in Belgium.
Does anyone maybe know if you can and maybe know a good garage that isn't a rip-off or what i should be careful off.

+Rodney Smith Just buy a stock car. If your place doesn't have the same stupid import laws as the US, then import it directly from Japan. Go for a vacation if you have to.
Then take it to a mechanic you TRUST! See that everything as all right, then if you want to bother mod it, just don't do permanent irreversible mods, and store all the stock parts you remove.
My legs twitch everytime he goes to shift. So used to shifting by sound playing this on a tv with surround sound is Makin me cray. Lol time to take the skyline for a cruise and get my fix.

I was really close to buying a black Supra about 9 months ago. I didn't buy it because it would've left me practically broke at the time. Just recently I bought a 370Z NISMO and I've been really happy with it.

Hey David, another great review! As you might be able to tell from my username, I'm a pretty hardcore muscle car guy, but I've been trying to become more accepting of imports, and I have to say your channel is the main reason I have been able to do that. I have gained so much respect for cars like this and even cars like the Miata and the S2000, which I thought I would never get around to liking. I love your Mustang and everything you have done to it; the exhaust is one of the best I've ever heard. I bet it sounds insane in person.
Supra's are awesome but man they all seem identical. Right out the gate there's something about the dash (thunderbird's dash does the same "aimed at you" deal....don't know why everyone makes a big deal of the supra doing the same.) Also the "aimed at you" dash has been around for forever. Pontiac even had it in their 60's wagons. I love the mk4 but jesus it's been turned into mainstream hero car fanboyism. Just once I'd like to see someone review a bone stock mk4 supra with only maybe wheels and tires to it's mod list. I mean it's like the goal is to take these old classics and just toss money and hp at it. Toyota really worked to make this a mustang that corners. They did their best to engineer linear performance in a boosted car. I just feel like people trash the glory of this car for some glory on the street these days. I think 400hp is all you'll ever need in a supra. That way you can still enjoy the car but have the soul of it still intact.....I totally just rambled right now. Well shit...that's how feel damnit. Let's see what this car does in modern standards. I'm pretty sure the supra is still a competitive car today with mostly stock parts.
If I ever owned one I would have it to 500hp.

Supra's are nice, but not for me. I was raised with Mustangs, so I'd stick with a sn95 cobra.
I have a 95 cobra too! I'm definitely a born and raised american muscle guy but i love this car. I would take a stock supra over my cobra stock any day. A terminator would be the one in question for me.

that's not what it does, it goes fast in a straight line, however I've heard you can set these up pretty nice but over about 5-600 hp they get hard to handle

Supra is special for the people love the tuning , have a special power and nice design through to through. Great job !!
All Toyota had to do was put the 2JZ in the FRS and they would have immediately demolished every other manufacturer in sales. They could have made a 5 speed N/A version 30 grand and then a Getrag 6 speed turbo version 40 grand. Just like Nissan with their base 370z at 30 grand and the Nismo 370 at 40 grand.
Instead they put that pathetic peanut 4 cylinder engine in it and ruined the car. When will the Japanese manufacturers learn that if we want perfect balance and handling we will just buy a Miata for 25 grand. Stop trying to compete in a market segment that you lost to Mazda over 20 years ago. We want stupid fast, overbuilt, straight line performance.
Wake up Toyota! There is a reason why 20 year old Supra are still selling for $40,000+. Stop trying to build a gay, modern, overpriced car that 99% of enthusiasts will never be able to afford. Just put the 2JZ in the fucking FRS and do it right for once!
This is another ruined Supra! Not entirely, but it's not right. That intercooler looks out of place, and those wheels... Please get rid of them, and those rear tires.

I own a 1990 Supra and I've been looking all over TH-cam to see reviews of this car but so far, none...
