    On rule 3 on your clip do you have to drop the ball as near to where you last played it or do you get a clubs length to dtop it in to or , place the ball as close to ehere you last played it. if that makes sense

    Rule refreshers are great!
    Sometimes just spending time with one rule is beneficial such as an unplayable ball and the three options associated with it.
    Also The rule regarding out of bounds is never talked about. I first time I became aware of it was when Phil Mickelson used it. It was released in 2019. The new stroke-and-distance local rule allows players the option of dropping in the fairway if they so choose. Players must find where their ball went out of bounds and create an imaginary perpendicular to the fairway, no closer to the hole. From there, you can now drop anywhere within two club-lengths behind the line. The next shot will be your fourth. This rule keeps groups moving and speeds up play.

      Hello - that's only a permissible Local Rule that as far as we're aware very few clubs have adopted, certainly in the UK, because the handicap authorities wouldn't allow such a Local Rule for qualifying rounds. Under the Rules of Golf I'm afraid there is no option to drop back in where you believe the ball went out of bounds, so can only assume Mickelson was actually in a penalty area not OOB?

  • @jg1007
    @jg1007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can understand the rules of going back to hit again. However, when you are playing on a busy course, hitting provisional balls all the time, or worse yet, finding you need to go back to the original spot of your last shot is really unreasonable, if not impossible. The reality is that even though it is not official, most of us amateurs will usually drop near where our ball went out and move on.

    • @wadesworld6250
      @wadesworld6250 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It takes very little time to hit a provisional. That said, there is now an option of dropping in the fairway near where the ball went out-of-bounds or is estimated to be lost, for a penalty of two strokes under a local rule. Ninety-nine percent of courses implement that local rule except in competitions. However, most golfers "just drop one" because they don't like what playing by the rules does to their score and ego, so they drop one, charge themselves a single stroke instead of two and justify by "pace of play."
      In summary, feel free to "just drop one," charge yourself two strokes, and move on.

    Isn't it possible if, e.g., a bunker is completely filled with temporary water, that your only option is to take an unplayable lie with the penalty and drop outside the bunker? Also, the player can always declare his ball unplayable couldn't he if he'd rather exchange the penalty stroke for a better lie/look at the hole? Maybe if he's got a lead by a few strokes and doesn't want to risk disaster by taking the maximum available relief option that might leave his ball in the bunker after a poor shot or a bad luck shot?

    • @jeremyellwood4515
      @jeremyellwood4515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Kevin - If the bunker were completely full you would probably have to take the penalty drop option outside, but the point of maximum available relief gives you at least the opportunity of avoiding the penalty if there is somewhere you could drop that might just be playable even if your feet were in the water or the ball would be submerged to some degree. But as you say, in some instances it's probably better to just take your medicine rather than risk a disaster!

    When measuring the 2 club lengths around 5.36, I noticed Neil laid down the driver and then rolled the club over with the clubhead on the ground. I thought that was frowned upon in much the same way as leaving the headcover on. You can see it quite clearly gains him several inches in the measurement. Bear in mind that he has only just told us that the long putter is not allowed because the few extra inches it might give could make a difference. Am I the only one seeing a contradiction here? I'm quite sure that when pros measure 2 club lengths, they place a tee in the ground at the first club length and then measure the second from that point.

    Couple of questions: club length….Jeremy mentioned getting free relief is 1? Is that all cases of free relief? Played with a guy that argued staked tree you got 2 club lengths? Also on the stroke and distance….just come clarification if i hit for example my second shot off the fairway (being optimistic here hahahaha) and it goes out of bound, i therefore take a drop….what shot am i now hitting? My 3rd or 4th? Ive always thought it was my 4th but what they discussed has now made me think it should be my 3rd?

    • @jackimyers9364
      @jackimyers9364 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom, I'm a rule official in Colorado USA. Free relief is usually 1 club length including from staked trees. 2 club length is either unplayable lie lateral relief (Rule 19) or penalty lateral relief. Any shot out of bounds is stroke and distance, that is, need to rehit from where you hit the out of bounds ball again. No drops for out of bounds, only stroke and distance rehit. So in your scenario your second shot was out of bounds. Penalty incurred so from second shot location hitting 4: first shot, second shot OB , penalty stroke, 4th shot.

    • @wadesworld6250
      @wadesworld6250 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jackimyers9364 As you know, one may drop in the fairway near where the ball went OB or was estimated to be lost if the course implements the local rule (and 99% do except during competitions) for the cost of two strokes. Folks interested in doing so can search "local rule out-of-bounds" to see the details of the procedure.

    If I overshoot our 2nd green, I am either on the cart path or directly behind the cart path into deep trees. A drop from the path has to be either nearer the hole or amongst the trees. Do I have to go S&D and take the shot again? Thanks

    • @jeremyellwood4515
      @jeremyellwood4515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes there is no practical or appealing place to drop even when you are entitled to free relief and this sounds like one of those scenarios where going back and playing again under S&D might be the only realistic option, although you could opt to play it from the cart path if you fancied it

    • @wadesworld6250
      @wadesworld6250 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's "nearest point of relief" not "nicest point of relief." Sometimes the nearest point of relief puts you in a worse situation, like knee-high grass, or in your situation, amongst the trees. As Jeremy said, in such a situation, it may be preferable to play the ball as it lies off the path, or replay from the previous spot under stroke and distance.

      @@frankhobbs7695 Hello Frank - that applies on the tee when the ball is not yet in play on that hole. In the general area, the main exception is that you now don't get penalised while searching for it. But if you take a practice stroke next to your ball on the fairway or in the rough and move the ball, for example, you get a one-stroke penalty and must replace the ball where it was

  • @XB10001
    @XB10001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was very high level, but nonetheless excellent reminder.
    One thing you could clarify with respect to stroke and distance is that it's convenient to play a provisional ball if you suspect the ball is lost as along as the player clearly states the intention.
    Otherwise, it's very hard to play on public courses.

    • @adrianscott6005
      @adrianscott6005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stroke and distance just isn’t realistic when playing general rounds - once you’ve walked 200 yards up the fairway, spent a few minutes looking for your ball and then trudging back again, you won’t be popular with the group behind waiting to play

    I’m sorry, but a TEN-stroke penalty assessed to Mark Hensby on Thursday is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!

    Can you explain an unplayable lie and what types of relief are available?

    • @jeremyellwood4515
      @jeremyellwood4515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can declare your ball unplayable anywhere on the course other than in a penalty area and it doesn't have to be physically unplayable. You then have three options - 1) Go back and play again from where you last played under penalty of stroke and distance; 2) Drop back as far as you like on a line keeping the point where the ball is lying directly between you and the flag (one-stroke penalty); 3) Drop within two club-lengths of where the ball is lying not nearer the hole (one-stroke penalty).
