    We had a query come up when playing yesterday. My ball landed on the green and left a pitchmark before rolling onto the fringe grass. My playing partners said that I could not repair the pitchmark before I played my shot from off the green even though it was not on my line but that they could as their ball was on the green and they were putting. Under rule 13.1c I was under the impression any pitchmarks ON the green could be repaired but not if they were OFF the green. I also thought you could remove sand and loose impediments that were ON the green. Was I correct because it seems silly that they could repair it but I couldn't? They thought it had come up on a recent televised professional event where someone was penalised.

    This is something that was just brought back to me while watching a tournament on TV. When The Golf Channel first started they interviewed Arnold Palmer several times. On one program he discussed etiquette in the bunker. As he put it, this involved being courteous to both players and greenskeepers. When you wind up in a bunker, enter from the back side if possible, disturb as little sand as possible, and never leave the bunker up the front slope! This immediately disturbs the surface all the way to the green, and in essence changes the possible lie for "all" players behind you! Considering all the "silly" rules in golf that bunker courtesy should be added in some way.

    I think it’s worth clarifying, a player may replace a ball ANY TIME they are taking relief for lost ball, penalty, abnormal course conditions, etc.

    Rules question: At the request of one of my playing partners who was making a putt I moved my ball mark one putter length. That exact situation happened to Zach Johnson a few years back on the 72nd hole of a tournament, and if I recall correctly he was assessed a 2 stroke penalty (he had not signed and turned in his scorecard). Luckily for him, he ended with a 3 shot lead, so with the penalty he still won but by only 1 stroke. Note that had he signed his scorecard and turned it in, I believe he would have been disqualified, but I'm not certain on that part.

    Watched a vid not long ago by a youtuber who puts up a lot of golf instructional vids, and in one, she was telling people to keep loose by just swinging wildly around the ball in the fairway. I commented that could be dangerous because you could accidentally hit the ball. She commented that there was no penalty for accidentally hitting the ball, and insisted this to be the case after I noted I thought she was mistaken. Apparently, it's not just the weekend hacker that doesn't know the rules.

    • @kenbrown2808

      my thought would be if you accidentally hit the ball doing that, it's your stroke.

    • @billjordan1173
      @billjordan1173 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kenbrown2808 You would think, but I believe the rule is that you place the ball back in the original spot and take a penalty stroke. My assumption for that is that it keeps you from having to take additional strokes should you accidentally hit the ball into a penalty area.

    • @kenbrown2808
      @kenbrown2808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billjordan1173 interesting. I looked it up, and the rules APPEAR to say if you take a practice swing on the course (as opposed to at the tee or on the green) and move the ball, then if you choose to take it as a stroke, you then get a two stroke penalty.
      it could be that if you accidentally move the ball, you get a stroke penalty, then you have the choice of moving it back, or of counting it as a stroke and playing it from the new lie.

    • @billjordan1173
      @billjordan1173 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kenbrown2808 The way I read it is that if you accidentally hit the ball (other than on tee or green as you note), you are SUPPOSED to replace the ball back in the original spot and take a stroke penalty. If you instead play the ball from where you accidentally hit it to (because you either had a brain fart or simply don't know the rule), you get a 2 stroke penalty (or lose the hole in match play) and still may have to replace the ball in its original spot and replay it (I didn't look up when this applies). So, I don't think it is necessarily that you get a choice, but that playing the ball from where it was accidentally hit is an additional rules violation. Either way, seems to me it would be much easier to simply count the accidental stroke as an intentional stroke, and just play the ball where it lies. What the heck are people doing taking their practice swings so close to the ball anyway (I play with an older guy who does this at least once a round)??

    • @kenbrown2808

    We played a foursomes match play knockout yesterday at our club. On the first tee our opponents announced that they wanted to share a putter as one of them did not have his with them (but was carrying a different one in case which he ended up using), are they able to share as effectively it is a team game? On the 3rd hole they then played their ball into a bush and the next to play tried first tried to back into the bush but was afraid if he broke off a branch he would be penalised (is this true if he was taking his stance?) so ended up playing left handed. He missed the ball altogether and handed his club to his partner to have a go (who also missed it completely). They conceded the hole at this point but could we have claimed the hole for what was a simple lapse in using his partner's club to avoid walking back to their buggy to grab his wedge?

    I don't understand why it's a pen shot when you hit it on the fairway accidentally. You've hit the ball, why is there not a choice to either take a penalty and replace, or, carry on counting the stroke?

    • @billjordan1173

      Totally agree. I imagine in most cases there is no score difference in putting the ball back and taking a penalty or counting the stroke and continuing, since you likely didn't move it very far anyway, but it would make more sense to me to just count the stroke. I guess the penalty stroke option would be useful if you accidentally hit the ball into an unplayable lie.

    Stopped the video at the 00 minute mark because the one rule everybody gets wrong, Is the drop - it shall be dropped at about knee height and this was adopted to pick up the speed of play and to make the drop more like an actual positioning of the ball and the PGA Tour had completely screwed up when everybody was holding it next to their knee and then dropping it. At about knee shall be accomplished by holding it out in front of you about knee and then dropping it, but nobody has addressed this fact ¿`_

    I have 2 rules question. If the professionals are playing slow, they are warned and then if they are still playing slow, they are penalized. Today, in the St. Jude Classic, English was told he was playing slow and is now on the clock. My question is, he is in the last group. Playing slow is not holding up anybody behind him. So, what would be the call?
    Let's say a player has a 6 foot up hill putt. He putts it very hard, the ball goes into the hole but the ball hits the interior rim of the cup and pops back out. What would be the call, sunk putt or not?. This happened to me a couple of years ago in a tournament and nobody had an answer. I had to putt it back into the hole.

    • @johnsadler6441
      @johnsadler6441 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple answer 1. You shouldn't hold up the field nor lose holes to the group in front. Would be nice if the PGA applied the rules evenly and regularly. It's not often the final group gets put on the clock .... no top 5 marquis player in the group this time ... perhaps :-)
      Simple answer 2. The ball is not considered in until it comes to rest so bouncing out doesn't count as holed. Has happened to plenty of us. Hope you didn't miss the putt. I had one bounce out because covid blocks were place in the holes making them about an inch or so deep. Happy days

      @@johnsadler6441 Our covid-blocks were often pool noodles that left about an inch of hole to put into, so we made an exception for balls that were bounced out by covid blocks.
