  • Amstel Gold Race Ladies' Edition 2021 featured a closed circuit course of 116km with three climbs each done 7 times, finishing with the Cauberg with 3km to go before a flat 1500m to the finish. Kasia Niewiadoma had won the last edition in 2019 but was up against strong competition with Marianne Vos in fine form, Elisa Longo Borghini wearing the WWT leader's jersey and SD Worx bringing a stacked team as per usual.

      More like lets let this come back together, then I will lead out for my nonexistent teammate from 200m to go to give myself an even worse chance of winning... If I was Niewiadoma I would be livid, its like ELB purposefully played her hand bad to tank Kasias result even when ELB would have certainly have has a better result herself, mindboggling.

      @@KoenMiseur I 100% agree with you. I hate people who don't pull their weight in life and in sports and are willing to let someone else sacrifice for them only to snatch the glory. The practical side of me says that you have to pull it to the finish because the aforementioned parties will want you on the podium and you owe them something. I also think you owe it to yourself, in a sport in which podium spots are hard to come by for most racers, to claim a result that someday you will look back on and say, "I made the podium at (insert name here) in 2021!" And second is always better than 8th or 10th. But trust me, I'm with you in sentiment. I would want to slow to a crawl, look 'em in the eye and say, "I'm not dragging you home. We both work then sprint or we get caught. Your call, but I'm not your b*tch." And if they waited to call my bluff, I'd want to show them that it's no bluff. I'd want to come to a complete stop on the side of the road if I had to. So, I guess it's a battle between my sentiment and practicality and a duty to the team. My sentiment is with you!

    Great commentary and breakdown of the race absolutely impeccable. Here's the thing. There may be something else going on between the two of them. They were barking back and forth at each other quite a bit and I think there may have been some disgruntled issue there that isn't apparent in racing it may have been between Woman to Woman. We don't often think this way because it there in a bike race. But sometimes things are going on behind the scenes that you have no idea about.

    I listened to the podcast first on this one, and had to see this finish. I'm going to watch the race now and yell at ELB just for fun.
    Also, loved the "Not like you Benji, I'm a degenerate." I was driving, and almost lost it on the highway going 80 MPH, I think that is 120 KPH for you out there in Metric land. Then you followed it up with another lie, it wasn't as memorable, but just as hilarious.

    Also, though, what did you think to SD Worx's tactics, like you said, four riders in the lead chase, know they didn't want to tow Vos to the line but with their roster, felt they could have done much more. Great analysis as always and so glad you have the rights for these races. Good to see they're taking you seriously, it's great exposure for them.

    I really couldn't understand it watching it live. I called it from the bottom of the climb that Vos wasn't done, even with the attack, because those two wouldn't work with each other and Katsia would be tired from the punch up the hill but I never expected Lingo Borghini to sit up. It was a guaranteed podium if they worked together. And if there's a leader's jersey in the women's world tour, then you need to ride like you deserve to wear it, and one of the strongest riders this year failed to do that for herself and her team which had worked so hard for her, Winder especially. Vollering must be pissed she narrowly missed out on two wind just on the throw but what can you say, Vos, true GOAT, she deserves so much more media attention. Nearly 300 wins, unimaginable.

    Maybe in general the women just find it harder to grasp.
    Thanks for sharing the video

  • @skippypicasso
    @skippypicasso 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see your point but I had a slightly different take watching it live (on GCN, not in person). Longo Borghini had to work at least as hard if not harder to catch Niewiadoma on the climb, and the attempt to ride Niewiadoma off her wheel-whether you agree with it or not-looked to have taken what she had left. If ELB takes another pull she really is just dragging Niewiadoma to the line. If Niewiadoma also really had nothing left to give at that point to make an attempt to kick solo to the finish then they were going to get caught anyway. So if neither of them had anything left in the tank to kick solo to the line, they wouldn’t beat the bunch together either, so there really might not have been good choices. Ultimately it doesn’t matter why ELB is refusing to pull through. Once she refuses, you have to go back and ask Niewiadoma why she made the move on the Cauberg. It didn’t look like she did it because she was hoping anyone could stay on her wheel, it looked like she did it because she wanted to try to win the race from the front. It seemed to me watching at the time that they both decided they’d rather lose (or take their chances against Vos in a sprint 😆) than allow the chance the other would win. I respect the perspective you provide but I don’t come down quite as hard on Longo Borghini, it seemed more 60-40 to me. Either way, it’s nice to be talking about women’s racing, I’ve been enjoying it more and more. (I think we can all agree on a hearty “Chapeau!” to Grace Brown though)

      Also, I wonder how many of the people commentating here would be able to be in ELB's position at the end of a race?

    tactivally i agree with your admonition about Longo Borghini and the Canyon Sram Rider(especially Longo Borghini). But hey let‘s also speak about the tactical and metaphysical aspects of annemiek van vleuten‘s tactic that she quitted her attempt to go over the keullberg(however it is pronounced @2.3k to go) in Order not to pass beneath her max Heart rate and to save energy. She saved @ 3rd place. the question is also about communication while beeing in the peloton. Because before i try to jump away i need to know wheter i get company or not(exept speaking about the mental fight)
