      Monte Crostis and Panoramica delle Vette, the one famously boycotted by the peloton/Contador in 2011, as it is challenging (15km @ 9%), superb views along the sterrato and with very little traffic.

      I just got into riding this year at age 49. I've been making great progress and recently found that I now have the strength to stand and peddle up the first part of some of the hardest inclines on my route. That has really knocked a few more seconds per km off my average speed. I'm already planning on a new bike for next season: a gravel bike, more for comfort and having fenders than for gravel, but still faster than my current hybrid city bike.

      @@jen3800 Great to hear! I lost over 100 lbs before I started exercising again. Cycling has been great. I've gone from doing about 30 km in 2 hours to just over 44 km in 2 hours in about 3 months. my goal is 2 hours per day, but I often do a bit more on my days off. I'm not losing much weight right now - I can tell that I'm losing a bit of fat but my legs have gotten so much stronger that I think I'm adding muscle at about the same rate I'm losing fat.

    Video idea, kind of related to doping: Why not compare bikes from 1995, 2000, 2005, 2015, and now (at UCI weight limit. Ride at same power of the same course and see what the time differences are. You've kind of done this before, but the theme could be related to how doping effected times and why riders now seem to be going as fast as juiced-riders in the past.

    • @lio220
      @lio220 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Every year they climb as fast as before. Have you seen the power in Watts of Nairo Quintana at thé begining of 2020 season ? Simply unbelievable, something never seen since 20 years, there are a lot of studies on it.
      The bike doesn't explain that.
      If you compare bikes of Tour de France 1997 and now, there is mathematically something as only 1, 5% difference of efficience on the hill (and that's a lot, 1min after an hour is very a big gap). Every thing else is talent, training and doping.

    Many years ago, I used to live in Chambery [France] and my favourite climb was Mont Revard. Although it is not that well-known [but did feature in the TDF a number of years ago] it is over 21kms in length and rises to an altitude of 1537m. It averages approx 6% to a maximum of 8.3% - so it's a fairly demanding climb.
    But the thing I loved best about it were the stunning views! It is located near Aix-Les-Bain and close by possibly one of the most beautiful cities in the whole of France - Annecy. I used to love riding around that region and it has such fond memories for me.

    Ten years ago I became very ill and ended up on dialysis for a year. Once every two weeks I was given EPO so as to help my mutilated blood carry more oxygen to my body. I make no apologies when I say, that stuff is freaking Superman juice. On the days when I got my EPO shot I felt like I could run through walls. Consider, being as sick and frail as you have ever felt in your life, imagine having the worst flu mixed with diarrhea and migraines, and then someone flipping a switch and you all of a sudden feel like you could stop the rotation of the earth. I to this day am blown away by how incredible it was. And, I won’t lie. . . I’ve been curious to know what it would be like to ride with some EPO.

    • @Yojimbonh
      @Yojimbonh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't understand why you would feel so much better the same day. I thought EPO is used by your body to create more red blood cells. It takes time to do that, so I wouldn't expect to see any immediate benefit. However, having never had EPO, I could be wrong.

    Greg LeMond is a good example of somebody who had a way above average ability to climb. When he was in his teens, living in Reno, Nevada, he used to ride Geiger Grade to Virginia City and the Mt. Rose Highway to Lake Tahoe. If you can go up those, with the elevations going from 4,000 feet in Reno to over 6,000 feet, then you can handle the Tour. They are very narrow and very steep climbs.

  • @haucks

      Julian Taylor yeah true that you guys can give us mounties problems wenn it‘s flat or goin downhill but you gain the time uphill for example: i gained something about 2 minutes on the 23% climb at one of my heavier mates (he is about 80 kilogramms) and the time i need for it is about 4-5 minutes so he needs something like 6-7 that are 20%-33% more time.
      But in sprinting i never won against him 😂 So i really respect you sprinter guys 👍 I mean climbing and sprinting are two complete different things you can‘t say who is the better cyclist...

    You are not correct here. The speed was not faster during the doping days. The speed record for a tour de france is 41km/h (2005) but only about 39km/h year 2000 and 2002. Just check climbing-records dot com. Distance, course, much to consider here. The peleton has totally changed with much more teams doing the pullings and much more welltrained athlethes in a team consider 2000. During froomies days the changed the course, more mountains and fewer TT to keep the sport more exciting. (He was so boring they had to change the course:) ....and therefore the speed went down.

    What I don't understand, is how they manage to dissipate all the heat that their bodies generate at that level of effort. Even at a biomechanical efficiency of 25% (rarely achieved), they would need to safely give off 1350W of heat without their core temperature going too high. As an engineer, I know how daunting it would be to create a thermal design with that capacity.
