- Hi there! I'm Rosie and I started this video out wanting to do a one source challenge collage, but then I found two incredible images that made me change course. Watch as take images from magazine and books to create two surrealist pieces of collage art.

Creating a handmade custom DIY surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design.
Collages made out of paper have a custom made feel that you can't get from a digital collage made in Photoshop. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!

the gem thing and the justice thing with the skull. gems on bones are the definition of justice.
This is so cool--an interesting aspect for me. the man on the deck is just doing his thing-as if just another day on the boat.

I think i would have put the skull and gems on black paper. Gems are often showcased on black velvet because it reads as luxury-i think black paper would have evoked that. In general, i think skull and gems is my favorite ive seen from you.

I stayed up all night lst night the lounge. Loud heavy metal, hard rock music. Was so good. Played live. Got to meet the band. There were from AZ and San Diego. Drank 2 Whiskey Sours, and got to listen to rap music as we cruised LA.
you can do almost anything with the collection of scraps, that's why i love the white backgorunds. but there is a lot of interest from the faith and grace of all our prayers that you can batten down that background on the sails
remember the pyramind picture, way back at the beginning. could incorporate a rational placement to bring the bones the justice of the skull and adventrue

Do you have or could you make a video on how you join a background that has been taken from a book ie the 2 sides? When I do it, it gets wrinkly and not together closely. Any tips would be great. Perhaps I need more practice 🤔😜
It definitely doesn't work every time! You have to cut as close to the spine as you can (taking the book apart is the best way to do this) so the picture can line up as well as possible. Also it helps if it is a background that hides imperfections like water, trees, anything with a lot of messy texture. And you can also use other images to cover up any parts that don't line up as well. It's not always easy!

Hi Rosie, I love your style, your ways of thinking, and how you explain the choices you make. Your style matches the types of collages I have been admiring in books, but have been wondering how to emulate. Your explanations are really helpful in understanding how to get there. I especially love that you get such great results with images that are newer than the coveted mid-20th-century scientific/Nat Geo images that so many collage artists use to great effect (though I know you use those too).
I do have a question: don't you often find that great images are back to back and you have to know whether you're going to use one before you can cut it out? Do you scan the other side first to preserve the other image? I've noticed you have files of cutouts; did you cut these items out without knowing what you would do with them?
