I have a theory. When you go to detonate and both you and an enemy player are inside the blast radius of the trap, the engine sends the boolean "flag" to each sticky individually. After each flag sent, the engine then checks whether the explosion had done enough damage to kill you. If it hasn't, then it applies the damage to you and the other player and proceeds to detonate the next available and primed sticky. As soon as one of the stickies kills you, though, the engine stops and doesn't trigger the remaining stickies, instead deleting the remaining stickies as if you had died normally.
