      @claritey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Lactose intolerance is way more common worldwide (65%) than in the US where only 36% of the population are intolerant (30 to 50 million people.) Certain populations such as African Americans (80%), American Indians (75%) and East Asians (90%) have a higher incidence rate of lactose intolerance while among other groups the rate is lower, with European Americans (2% to 7%) and Hispanic Americans (10.05% to 50%.) One study suggests when asked the self reported intolerance rate is lower than previously thought.

    • @tobydammit6599
      @tobydammit6599 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I dont know if this is true for everyone or just me. But you can also train your body to accept lactose into its diet. I stopped drinking milk as most do entering adulthood. Became lactose intolerant. Then about 7 years later while trying to put on weight for training decided to iterate it back into my diet. At first yeah it was not fun. It would make me use the restroom almost instantly. But i kind of just forced my body to keep drinking it. After about a little less than a month it got to the point where no matter how much milk i drank (whole 2%) i would have no effect on me. Ive heard this work for several people. The body is overall a learning computer which you can most of the time reprogram at your own will.

    • @JeveGreen
      @JeveGreen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some estimates say that as much as 3/4 of humanity are lactose intolerant, so yeah it's surprisingly uncommon to not suffer some side effects from dairy as an adult.
      Granted, even if you are intolerant the effects aren't very severe. You might feel bloated and queasy, maybe you'll have a bad stool, but it'll pass. As long as you don't consume too much you should be fine.
      Ironically though, yoghurt is good if you have a loose stool, as it promotes the good kinds of gut bacteria which help with digesting stuff like fibers.

    To be honest with you, I went dairy free when was younger because my dad had told me that dairy products makes your body produce mucus in your lungs and makes me have a hard time breathing ,which in turn, made me have asthma attacks. My asthma went away within two years and now I run track and play football, this probably won’t turn out the same with everyone and some people may still have asthma but still eat diary products, ( btw I still eat yogurt and ice every so often) but this just my experience of not drinking milk and I switched to almond, rice, and soy milks... these are very delicious and if you are still using an asthma pump in your teens, you should probably make a switch and just test out my theory

    I'm asthmatic. Dairy fats actually help reduce inflammation. When I was being undermedicated, coffee (bronchiodilator) and cream, ice cream, or butter helped get me through rough days. I imagine the people who found their asthma improved without dairy were somewhat lactose intolerant-- stomach bloating makes it hard to take in a deep breath.
    In short, listen to your body. If milk is making you feel bad, stop drinking it, you can get what you need in other forms. If milk makes you feel healthy and content, don't be scared off it.

But that wasn't really the question you were asking originally and doesn't have anything to do with whether milk is good for lactose tolerant people or not. You did say earlier that the research was inconclusive. But why conclude the video on the part about milk not being necessary, when that wasn't the question?

    well done video! Dug deep to show some huge conflicts of interest in the US (also here in Canada almost identical situation). I consume plenty of dairy, but rotate on and off. Cow dairy particularly has a very high tendency to promote intolerance/ allergy/ reactions, which rotating on and off help prevent. I love all dairy products so rather than avoid them, I enjoy them as part of a rotation. The concept of rotating your foods rather than eating the same foods to promote good digestion and minimise allergy and intolerance goes back to the 1920's, with plenty of newer research and experience.
    Again, really well researched balanced video, thank you!

    If you're raised in a culture where dairy consumption was a key part of the diet, you are more likely to inherit lactase persistence because most ppl in that culture would naturally have it. And usually milk and cheeses are an important source of protein in those cultures as well. So if you can't drink milk and there's a scarcity of other food, you are more likely to starve - which means you wouldn't pass on your genes to the next generation.
    In 1st world nations where there's plenty of other foods available and very little to no worry about famines or lack of food, the ability to drink milk really isn't important. We can get those same nutrients in ways our bodies can digest without having to drink milk. It's really that simple. But that doesn't sell milk...

      @@communisttears3628 I never said it was. I also didn't specify any first world nations either and different nations have different regulations regarding sugar added to products.
      The point is one doesn't *need* to consume milk in order to have a healthy diet. And if a healthy diet is the goal, obviously that's going to involve cutting back the sugar. But it's also worth noting that there's nothing wrong with having milk in your diet, especially if you have lactase persistence. I don't BTW. I have to be very careful about what foods and drinks I get when I'm out in public. Although at least there's usually non-dairy options at most places these days.

    I always thought it was weird growing up that the only thing offered with school lunch was 1%, 2%, or chocolate milk. No water other than the fountain.
    Also, on a personal note, for me milk objectively cannot be all bad. A dairy cow can produce upwards of 18,000 calories of milk and cream a day. While this is probably more than they did hundreds of years ago, a single cow would have still produced enough calories to stave off starvation for a family in the form of something rather easy to consume or cook with. So regardless of whether or not we should be drinking it now, it is still important to remember we needed to drink it then.
