    There is no 'safety infringement' as you call it. He is moving ahead of the machine laying the CWR onto the chairs. The rail is in no danger of whipping at the end as the machine arm has it gripped and is feeding it onto the sleepers. The rail is too heavy to whip loose from the feeding arm.....and if you watch the individual concerned you will see he is moving well ahead of the machine and the feeding arm. He is actually doing his job correctly.

    Back in my day, I would put pretzels on with a sledgehammer!, I would be inside, and my bunk mate would do the outside. Would do 1/2 a mile a day. Only had the speed swing as the only machine. We were replacing rail.

    Ah ! The smell and taste of all that granite stone dust ! Noiw THAT is what i would i say constitutes a 'hazard' - hard hats and flourescent clothing does zip for !

    Like a jigsaw puzzle,already marked out....beats hammering spikes in eh... how long before someone invents machine that lays it all down in one.

      There are machines that do just about all of it.Lays ties on graded roadbed, moves rails into position, anchors the rails to the ties. Then they follow on with a ballast train that spreads the ballast. And then a tamper adjusts the track profile and tamps the ballast. Finally a ballast plow and sweeper cleans off the excess and shapes the sides of the ballast. Doing the bucket dumps of the ballast is a waste of manpower where it could be done by a couple people and remote control ballast hoppers.

    Why don't we have concrete ties instead of wooden ties here in the US? Very impressive. We should have more railroads! Our infrastructure needs improvement on the East Coast. Especially the South.

      Where do you live? In Florida we have concrete ties running from Jacksonville to Miami on the FEC and part of the way on CSX/Amtrak/TriRail/SunRail. Reason we use wood is because it is cheap. FEC even has its own concrete tie plant. Switches often are laid on wood but more and more, they are being laid on concrete ties also.

    Serious safety infringement at 4:00 There is no way that man should be walking on the sleepers in the 4ft. If that length of rail suddenly released at the end and whipped across, he would be killed or seriously injured.

      yes as an industry professional that rail is very unpredictable so you want to stay far out from it in the clear.
