On a United airlines flight from Hawaii we were delayed an hour cause someone's phone fell through a HOLE in the cabin floor. Holes in any part of airplane is an unsettling thought.
When I was on a United flight around Christmas, they said "if you drop your phone, don't try to reach down to pick it up." I assumed it was because the seats were so cramped you literally could easily get yourself stuck, but maybe it's so we didn't see the holes.... jk

my friend's father worked for United for 19 years before they told him that he'll be laid off or he could move half way across the country to keep his job. he ended up moving and got laid off a month later. I'll never fly united.
Is this now or back in the day? After 9/11 i had 4 years and was working in Oakland for United. I was offered layoff or to go to Indianapolis. I went to Indy, 9 months later I was laid off again. At that time people with less than 5 years all lost their jobs. Currently no layoffs since 2008 recession. I am currently waiting with 21 years to get laid off..
Late story: So I have sever Scoliosis, meaning I have to travel from my home in Illinois all the way to California. We decided to take United instead of Delta. Well, I used to have to bring medical equipment, so we called ahead to warn them. They were all good with it, so we drove to the airport without another thought. When we get to the check-in counter? “Sorry, our planes are too small for this.” It took over forty minutes to finally get them to take it. We almost missed our flight and they damaged the equipment. :,) Best part? They were taking one of their biggest planes they had at that airport. (Big enough for the equipment!!)

Governments should stop bailing these failed airlines out every time they get in a trouble. Once the funding stops, they will then start to value their customers.
Don't think anyone would miss United if they went under. Sadly, they used to be one of the best airlines around, course that's way back in the late 60's, times have changed.
Well, they do to stop monopolies, like if Untied went under People might go to mostly another company, that company will now have the money to acquire more until its like 1 airline (and right now there are 4 companies explained in the video)

Continental was a much better airline and company than United. They had hubs in Newark, Cleveland and Houston. Once the United takeover of Continental was announced, quite a few Continental One-Pass members started shopping for a new primary airline as it was widely accepted that Customer Service would suffer. No one expected the outcome to be as bad as it got.

@@PedroPony833 I’ve flown multiple airlines including Ryanair and EasyJet and something like that has never happened to me. I’ve once been delayed for about 1 hour or 2 on an UIA flight. That was the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced. Cannot recommend them at all. The staff didn’t even speak English and the customer service wasn’t even able to tell me what currency I could use on the flight to purchase meals. I can definitely recommend Ryanair , they’re always on time and super friendly. Delta is amazing as well.
united lost my bag that had my nieces ( who had just turned one) birthday present in it, was as polite as i could be for the first 4 hours and after i lost my temper i was told that they could not assist anyone who they felt was threatening them, never did find that damn bag, been about 4 years.

Shortly after the doctor incident, I met a few members of a United cabin crew at a bar in Brussels. They were straight up defending the actions of United, arguing that he should've done what he's told to do and left even though he purchased the right to be on that plane. They said you should always comply with the instructions you're given since it's a tight security situation, which I can't argue, but when you're minding your own business and chosen at random to give up your seat for someone else's mistake...!?
Well it wasn’t really anyone’s mistake. Where Dr Dao really messed up is he initially got off the plane and then got back on, which is a security breach. That’s why Chicago aviation security came and they knocked him out and dragged him off.

I lost sleep over the puppy. I subsequently researched everything I could find about this online. United made some statement saying they would no longer accept flat-nosed breeds on the flights. How horrible. Kokito did not die because he was a French bulldog. He died because a flight attendant stuffed him in an overhead bin.

I have dealt with two incidences of rudeness, abrasiveness, disrespectfulness, angers, temper tantrums, unprofessionalism, etc. by United Airline's staffs at the airports as well as with the attendants on and off of the flights. I do not recommend this company.
Back in the 1970s, when I was employed by TW, I often received complimentary travel benefits from UA. They offered excellent service at the time. Not so, today. They've treated their staff with such contempt it's hardly any wonder why their inflight and ground staff are so rude and disinterested in providing professional service.
Same basically. That's all I can really say about United. That's why I haven't flown with them since 2008. I know bad things can happen with other airlines too but I've never been treated as poorly since I started avoiding them. Sometimes this means I pay a little bit more but it's worth it.
As a person that lives in Houston, Continental was our hometown airline, and it was beloved by all who live here. After the so called "merger" with United it became clear that quality and service fell quickly and it has become hated by Houston, including those former Continental employees who all say the culture became toxic.
Spirit is near as bad and when you book spirit you know your booking for a cheap fare not high quality. United is supposed to be a higher tier airline.
I believe the airline industry has been lobbying hard against the expansion of Amtrak or regional high-speed trains like they have in Europe and Asia. Airlines know damn well that with competition they can just hang it up. I know I would prefer to take the train.

one time on a flight my brothers nose started bleeding, I reached up to press the flight attendant call button, one of them yelled at me to sit down. i was eleven and my brother was eight. i ended up having to use my jacket as a tissue for him. and the attendant talked shit abt us to our mom. great flight!
After 30 years using a wheelchair, United was the first airline to break one during a trip from NJ to FL. Getting the chair replaced ws a nightmare of about 2 months. Never got an apology oran explanation of how it happened.

My college roommate gave me another good reason to avoid United. He took United to get from Chicago to Queens for Thanksgiving break. Naturally, he wanted to go to Laguardia, that's what his ticket was for. He did go to Laguardia, but his luggage went to Newark.
10:50 When my (step)sister was a child, shee had to travel alone from her dad's and mom's (my stepmom). That meant she needed a guide on the flights. United once didn't give her a guide, and she missed a connecting flight while waiting for the guide because they had her tickets so she ended up flying in hours late. That was the last time my family used United. EDIT: Did I mention she had school the next day, and thus was miserable all day from being so tired?
Funny, I just had to email United this morning about them not giving me compensation for my incident in December 2019. I booked a flight from Omaha to LAX on Saturday, December 28, at 4:31PM. I arrived at the airport at 2PM, and waited for my flight, the flight was delayed, to 5, then 5:30, to 5:46, and then cancelled altogether. The United Staff was unwilling to rebook me to another flight leaving that evening, so I was put on a 5AM flight on the 29. I attempted to get meal vouchers or a hotel for my 13 hour delay, but was refused. I spent the night in the terminal, only to find my flight delayed by another 13 hours to 6PM on the 29. I attempted to rebook, but United refused, despite allowing other passengers to get flights to the same destination. I also asked to use another airline, as customers in front and behind me got to rebook to American Airlines, this was also refused. United claimed a flight to LAX was cancelled, and I was unable to book it, only for me to find a person behind me in line was booked to that flight. Again, United refused to honor any compensation for my 28 hour delay. Eventually, I was able to book an American flight, after three hours of arguing with United. It should be noted, they allowed all the white people to book new flights, but refused me, a Korean. Not saying it was discrimination, per say, but it was a strange turn of events, especially in light of the 2017 case.
Now that there’s direct flights to Taiwan on EVA air, we use them. United making my 72 year-old mom wait for 16 hours at LAX with no meal vouchers and constant (unannounced) gate changes was completely unacceptable. My mom was on the phone with me while I was online checking her flight status and telling her what gate to go to. I hope they go out of business. They suck.
You had me until you decided to put your race into it. I’ve had similar instances and while i am African American. I would never think of a business doing things like that to you because of your race. Things like this happen everyday it is ultimately up to the airline to compensate you for your time. This was unfortunate for you and i apologize that happened but just think of the factors that could have possibly delayed/cancelled your flight.

I was traveling with my Grandfather who died on the trip and when I wanted to make a change they didn’t allow me and never refunded me for the flight. I had to fly on Delta, who luckily gave a bereavement fare.
Delta is the anti United. I was flying to Atlanta from newark, and asked if they could stick me on an earlier flight because my layover was too short. They went out of their way to help, and we didn't miss the flight. This was with the cheapest of basic economy tickets which usually makes airlines less helpful. That's a highly unfortunate story. Sorry to hear about that. It's baffling to think it's unsurprising...
I had an experience where a United employee expected me to buy a ticket for a connecting flight under Delta due to multiple delays on United's end, so I arrived in Minneapolis without a flight out to my home thanks to United. Luckily, Delta was the MVP and managed to get me a flight home despite united's garbage. It's weird how Delta really is the airline angel to United's awful service
Delta is really quite amazing. My late grandmother one time suffered a medical emergency on one of their flights during a trip. Not only did they pull an emergency landing so she could be transferred to a hospital, they also helped her book another flight back home once she recovered and even called a month after the incident to check up and ask how she was doing. That alone has cemented my decision to prefer flying Delta whenever I am able.

I've flown with United twice.The staff at LAX was extremely rude. Self-checkin was required, there were enough employees and check-in was about to close but all of them refused to help. The second time I flew from Tokyo to Lima with a layover in Houston. I was very confused about whether I should pick up my suitcase and check it in again. I asked ten employees and everyone told me something different. When I arrived in Lima, my bag was not there and it took one week to get it back. Both times, the flights were hopelessly overbooked and I had to run to be assigned a seat so I wouldn't get kicked off the flight.

I'm noticing a trend; a lot of hated companies are monopolies or hold a great deal of control over the market. It seems that once a company knows its customers have no alternatives the leadership stops caring about PR and perhaps becomes arrogant.

I have never had a positive experience when flying United. They have lost and damaged my luggage; They have overbooked or cancelled several flights; They have keep me on planes stuck on runways for several hours. I will no longer fly United if I have any choice at all. I have passed on non-stop United flights and taken complicated multiple transfer flights with other airlines just to avoid dealing with United. So yes, I am one of those people who truly hates United.

Since I enjoyed Continental Airlines, I've had a soft spot for United as well post merger and I've had nice experiences flying with them internationally and domestically so United now I feel like has been getting better than they were a couple years ago
I flew United Airlines for the first time in my life in 2019 from Korea to the US. I was really scared to fly actually, not knowing what to expect from them. Thankfully, they didn't drag me out of my seat, nor damaged my luggage. Got back on time, however, the experience was a mediocre as I fly Delta Airlines often and they are my favorite airline.
@@MojaveDan Unfortunately active military coming from overseas to the US are required to fly on US carriers. One reason is if they're traveling on duty, by federal law they cannot be bumped off a flight.
Well I don't agree with how are at UA but I can also say the "customer is always right" it's not true in the airlines industry. There are rules and regulations they need to follow.
I used to fly Continental and was on the last Continental flight to HNL from DFW before the merger with United. I loved Continental. But for months after the merger, I could tell which airline the attendants worked for before the merger. Former Continental employees were friendly and helpful. The old United hands almost seemed to despise their customers. Your mileage may vary, but that was my experience. One thing is for sure, despite the old attendant's speech of "We appreciate you have a choice when traveling", you really don't anymore. And the airlines know it. I despise flying anymore. It is more an endurance race than a travel adventure anymore regardless of carrier. Flying is my last resort.
My experience for the first time on multiple planes with United was thankfully good. Very nice crew. But knowing this stuff happened made me think how lucky some are and unlucky others are. Its a shame though.
United flight attendants have been some of the nastiest people I have ever encountered in the course of a paid service. On a first class flight to Hawaii, they seemed to relish telling me I would not be getting a first class meal, because "you have fewer miles than anyone else in First Class." They also woke me up at the end of the flight by saying, "Where do you think you're going?!," because, being asleep, I was not deplaning. Like most true statements, here is one that is not very PC: the older ones are worse.
It’s because of the law and the union. Older, more senior flight attendants get the choicest jobs, international flights and first and biz class sections. They aren’t selected because of their quality service and attitudes.
Seniority rules is not always good for the customer.... which is one reason why foreign carriers are so much better rated than US ones on international routes, especially for biz and 1st class...
At my cargo airline we traveled UA frequently for positioning and deadheading. Our slogan for them was, "Fly Untied Airlines ...We're not happy until you're not happy".

Literally today, I missed my second leg of my trip because of a "technical" problem, resulting in an hour and half delay. Now I had to wait 11 hours for another flight. Not flying with them ever again.
Yeah it hurt to lose Continental. And the timing of this video is ironic with the virus pandemic. Pre-merger United always stunk unlike Continental in the late 90’s and 00’s. Fun fact: N545UA (coincidentally shown at 5:45 in this video) made its first flight the very day I was born.
Sadly with the dog death incident in 2018, I found out that was a former Continental crew. Still the pre-merger United culture was worse than pre-merger Continental.

@Stinger Grail Apparently it was quite a turbulent flight. There was also a language barrier between the attendant and passenger. But that's no excuse for downright KILLING someone's pet like that. As to it being an experienced crew, most of those former Continental crews are good. This attendant didn't seem to understand, and was being forceful about doing the wrong thing.
@@amisner2k are you kidding me? Regulations are bare minimum. None of their workers are unionised and prices for almost everything have gone out of controll. If we absolutely have to have private companies at least we should force them to work for public good rather than private profit. Nationalising them all would be by far the best way to do that but heavy regulation is still better than nothing.
Just relax and try not to have high expectations. Usually if people do so in life , with everything , their experiences turn out much better and more on a positive note. Do not listen to the negative comments, just make it YOUR own experience NOT somebody else's.
On a trip to Hawaii, I decided to fly “First Class” on United just to “splurge” a little. What a big mistake! *Flight attendant greeted me by saying, “So, you decided to fly the tacky airline today ugh?” *Tuna sandwich for lunch.....other options were not available due to a food service “error”. *In flight video entertainment also not available. The system had developed some “glitches “. This is so typical of this airline (as I have learned the hard way after many United Flights following this flight to Hawaii.) Never again, United....never.
Stop lying!!! They never serve Tuna on any of their flights..Hawaii is considered a leisure flight just like any destination to Cancun!! If you had Tuna it was over 12 yrs ago when they gave you that type sandwich in Coach...
They're a large part of the airline market. When you combine that knowledge with the Customer satisfaction index, you can deduce that they're actually bringing the index down. In other words, their customer service is worse than what the graph already indicates.
I never thought UA had a bad reputation. I've flown with them and the worst problem I've had was a seat that was stiff but they gave me back 7,500 airline miles for it. Sure, it's not spectacular like it's partners such as Lufthansa or Singapore. This airline actually earned our families trust when my parents were going on their honey moon to Hawaii (about 10-15 years ago). They were flying AA from IND - ORD - LAX - OGG. When they got to LAX they missed their flight to Maui because of a delay from Chicago. They contacted support about it and they were very rude to my parents. They would refuse to help them in any way let alone get them another flight. They ended up contacting UA as a second option and they explained their situation and they got them the rest of their trip free. My mom has been with them ever since and we haven't had many issues.
only reason I ever flew United is because the little town some of my family lifted in only had a small airport with a single terminal, with a single gate, running a single airline, to only two locations... .and that airline was (you guessed it) United. Since then, we endure a three hour drive to a larger city to fly American Airlines instead, and have been all the happier for it.

The bailout money that the airlines can apply for are only to be used to pay the employees. They will be fined, if the funds are used for anything other than that.
Apparently they once made a woman flush her pet hamster down the toilet. So the woman was planning her flight, and she asked customer support if it was ok for her to bring her hamster on the plane, and they said that it was perfectly fine. But then, once she got on the plane, an employee told her that the hamster wasn't allowed and that she either needs to release the hamster into the wild, flush it down the toilet, or miss her flight. So she had to flush it.

I can't say I've personally have had an experience like this, since when I was flying United (Continental at the time) I was still very young, but I remember that at some point, around 2009, my family stopped flying Continental and started using Delta, since I was young I didn't question it, but when I was in high school, I became curious as to why the change happened and my father told me about the bad experiences he had with the airline. Apparently late into one of our flights, to where ever we were going, my father got up to try to throw away a cup in which they gave him water, earlier in the flight (a quick note, my family isn't American, we are US citizens but at this point in time [when this incident happened] we were still living in Puerto Rico and so my father spoke very little English). When my Father reached the stewardess, she thought that he wanted water and was telling him that she couldn't give him water, for some reason, but my Father kept trying to explain what he actually was trying to do, the stewardess apparently became irritated and put water in a cup and pretended that her hand slipped and splashed my Father with water.
Well you weren’t flying United.. you were flying Continental. Two totally different airlines at the time. It’s not United ( continental at the time). They had nothing to do with one another than. They didn’t change the name to United they were absorbed by United

Oh! Another awesome United experience! During the early days of the pandemic when all the other airlines were practicing social distancing on the planes, I had to fly home because my father passed unexpectedly. The first same day flight was through Delta, and it was rather nice. Had an entire row to myself, and everyone was spaced out very well. My flight back was through United and I figured they had to be doing the same thing as everyone else so I wasn't too worried about being on that flight. NOPE! My flight home was PACKED to the gills. I had a tiny old woman essentially resting on my shoulder the entire flight. On my next connection I brought up how uncomfortable I felt being that close to other people and expressed concern since every other flight was practicing soical distancing, the boarding attendant sighed and rolled her eyes before letting me know the flight was booked solid and there wasn't anything I could do unless I wanted to upgrade to a first class seat for $200. So flew again shoulder to shoulder with someone else, during the 1st peak of the pandemic in America...luckily I'm still healthy, but shit man. Worst flight company on the planet.
4:10 they legit have some of the worst flight attendants. One guy hit my hand while he was passing me water so it would spill on another guy I was sitting next to. One attendant kept opening up a window after I closed it for TWO HOURS. I didn't bother asking her since I was trying to sleep. One of the others in Sydney airport said there was a "boarding tax" which, if you look it up, is a legit scam people have been doing for ages. One of their employees in Dulles airport spun my $1000 Didgeridoo and it broke one of the carved ends in the box we put it in. I asked him to watch what he's doing and he just about flipped. UA is hated because of shit flight attendants, baggage handlers who straight up don't care, and pilots who feel like they are about to wreck the plane.
I have a job that requires me to carry firearms, EVERYTIME I’ve ever checked my firearms through United they end up on the carousel at baggage claim.That is a big no no. For those who don’t know, when checking a bag containing a firearm they are specifically tagged to be hand carried to the pick up desk at baggage claim only to be released after verifying the ID of the person picking up the bag as the owner. United employees don’t care and always put them on the carousel for anyone to grab.
That is completely on the person dropping the bags. It is stressed heavily in training to walk firearms cases out to their owners. I've been harassed by passengers just for walking their cases out and asking to ID them because they believe I'm "infringing their rights" but I still do it because it is regulation.
Being a former employee of UAL, I can say this is on point. One reason you missed: the infighting of management at the corporate level. Which translated to a hostile work environment, and a less than friendly environment for the passengers. A very low vibrational airline to work for. However, I hear other airlines have some issues as well.
United Airline: "Look, we know you're not happy. We're not happy about it either. But if we both shut up and try to get this done we'll not have to deal with each other as much, okay?"
Whenever I fly United internationally, some how, my luggage gets put some where completely different. It sucks. Sometimes, I have to go out and buy more clothes because they put my luggage somewhere I don’t know. I hate them.
That sucks.. I do recommend storing some clothes in the bag you take to the plane. I have done it many times, no luggage is ever missing (I fly on Finnair) but it is good to be prepared!

I fly pretty often internationally mostly to Europe, and I generally never fly American carriers. Not because of a dislike of American carriers, but normally tickets are cheaper, and the planes are usually newer if fly other carriers, especially Middle-Eastern or those from mainland Europe. I recently flew United from New York to Paris about two months ago, and it was a really nice flight, on a pretty new plane and was well priced. I also once flew United in 2018 to munich on a pretty old plane, and that flight was average at best. PR & HR nightmares aside, I think it underwhelms me the most because United is pretty unpredictable in the service you're going to get, compared to Lufthansa or Emirates. That, and their transatlantic hub nearest to me is Newark Liberty, and that is always disappointing.
Coming to this late, but over a decade ago I flew with a United Airlines employee on a Southwest flight. When I asked why she was on a Southwest flight and not United, she answered, “I may work for United, but I would never fly with them.” Stuck with me all these years later and I’ve never flown with United!
Growing up my father absolutely refused to fly on any united flight even if it was the only option we would just postpone the vacation a day or use another airport.
My school's orchestra took a United flight to New York to play a concert at Carnegie Hall. Almost a 1/4th of the class had their instruments damaged or broken.
I flew on a nearly empty airplane on United. Since I was seated in a row with another person and there were lots of empty rows, I took it on my self to move to an empty row. The flight attendant came over immediately and said "sir, you did not pay for that seat". That's the level of customer service I look forward to when I'm flying on United.
The Continental merger should never have been approved. Continental was a highly rated airline. After the merger, United thought they had a monopoly and starting gouging and providing poor service. They also layed off way more Continental employees who tended to be polite and kept the impolite United employees. I don't blame the employees. They are treaded poorly as you point out in the video. The Dr. David Dao case shows that even cattle are treated better than their customers.
I remember a few weeks after the 2017 incident my dad had a United flight and I was legitimately afraid. Never knew they were this bad, they should just be shut down. What an absolute joke of a company.
We in Houston loved Continental - great service, lots of jobs locally, etc. Then came the merger, with the understanding that United wouldn't be moving employees to Chicago. We know how that went. United's service is pretty bad, especially compared to Southwest for domestic and British Airways for international flights. Speaking of Southwest, it wasn't long ago that United fought tooth and nail in an attempt to prohibit Southwest from adding Latin America and the Caribbean - fortunately, Southwest prevailed. At least United is consistent - you can count on the flights being delayed. About a week ago I flew Houston to Albuquerque on UA. The 12:35pm finally left the ground around 5pm. Around 3pm we were given $10 meal vouchers which we could use at any participating eatery in either airport within 24 hours (the ABQ restaurants were all closed by the time we arrived). They also noted that the voucher was not "compensation." At one point a customer was told we would be delayed boarding until 5:30pm when suddenly the attendant announced at 4:15pm that we all needed to get to the gate and on the plane - no social distancing or boarding group numbers mattered. Interesting, the Southwest flights leaving from Houston's Hobby Airport at roughly the same earlier time were all on time. The only two flights in the terminal that were delayed were both UA. Returning to Houston, my 3:30pm flight was posted as delayed until 4:30pm. However, when checking in, I was informed that I could take the earlier flight at 1:15pm, which I actually could make! However, after making the transfer, the board then announced that the flight was now delayed - which lasted until 3:30pm. And once again, the Southwest flights back to Houston were all on-time. And thank God we have options to fly internationally and avoid UA!

Is this now or back in the day? After 9/11 i had 4 years and was working in Oakland for United. I was offered layoff or to go to Indianapolis. I went to Indy, 9 months later I was laid off again. At that time people with less than 5 years all lost their jobs. Currently no layoffs since 2008 recession. I am currently waiting with 21 years to get laid off..

So I have sever Scoliosis, meaning I have to travel from my home in Illinois all the way to California. We decided to take United instead of Delta. Well, I used to have to bring medical equipment, so we called ahead to warn them. They were all good with it, so we drove to the airport without another thought.
When we get to the check-in counter?
“Sorry, our planes are too small for this.”
It took over forty minutes to finally get them to take it. We almost missed our flight and they damaged the equipment. :,)
Best part? They were taking one of their biggest planes they had at that airport. (Big enough for the equipment!!)

Continental was a much better airline and company than United. They had hubs in Newark, Cleveland and Houston.
Once the United takeover of Continental was announced, quite a few Continental One-Pass members started shopping for a new primary airline as it was widely accepted that Customer Service would suffer. No one expected the outcome to be as bad as it got.

@@PedroPony833 I’ve flown multiple airlines including Ryanair and EasyJet and something like that has never happened to me. I’ve once been delayed for about 1 hour or 2 on an UIA flight. That was the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced. Cannot recommend them at all. The staff didn’t even speak English and the customer service wasn’t even able to tell me what currency I could use on the flight to purchase meals. I can definitely recommend Ryanair , they’re always on time and super friendly. Delta is amazing as well.
United is the only airline where the the employees are actively hostile towards customers at all times.

Shortly after the doctor incident, I met a few members of a United cabin crew at a bar in Brussels. They were straight up defending the actions of United, arguing that he should've done what he's told to do and left even though he purchased the right to be on that plane. They said you should always comply with the instructions you're given since it's a tight security situation, which I can't argue, but when you're minding your own business and chosen at random to give up your seat for someone else's mistake...!?
Well it wasn’t really anyone’s mistake. Where Dr Dao really messed up is he initially got off the plane and then got back on, which is a security breach. That’s why Chicago aviation security came and they knocked him out and dragged him off.

I have dealt with two incidences of rudeness, abrasiveness, disrespectfulness, angers, temper tantrums, unprofessionalism, etc. by United Airline's staffs at the airports as well as with the attendants on and off of the flights. I do not recommend this company.
Back in the 1970s, when I was employed by TW, I often received complimentary travel benefits from UA. They offered excellent service at the time. Not so, today. They've treated their staff with such contempt it's hardly any wonder why their inflight and ground staff are so rude and disinterested in providing professional service.
Same basically. That's all I can really say about United. That's why I haven't flown with them since 2008. I know bad things can happen with other airlines too but I've never been treated as poorly since I started avoiding them. Sometimes this means I pay a little bit more but it's worth it.
As a person that lives in Houston, Continental was our hometown airline, and it was beloved by all who live here. After the so called "merger" with United it became clear that quality and service fell quickly and it has become hated by Houston, including those former Continental employees who all say the culture became toxic.

I believe the airline industry has been lobbying hard against the expansion of Amtrak or regional high-speed trains like they have in Europe and Asia. Airlines know damn well that with competition they can just hang it up. I know I would prefer to take the train.
Not only have they broken guitars, but there's a video of a flight attendant attempting to wrestle a multi-million dollar Stradivarius violin from it's assigned keeper (most Strads are loaned to the players)

After 30 years using a wheelchair, United was the first airline to break one during a trip from NJ to FL. Getting the chair replaced ws a nightmare of about 2 months. Never got an apology oran explanation of how it happened.

My college roommate gave me another good reason to avoid United. He took United to get from Chicago to Queens for Thanksgiving break. Naturally, he wanted to go to Laguardia, that's what his ticket was for. He did go to Laguardia, but his luggage went to Newark.

United once didn't give her a guide, and she missed a connecting flight while waiting for the guide because they had her tickets so she ended up flying in hours late. That was the last time my family used United.

Funny, I just had to email United this morning about them not giving me compensation for my incident in December 2019.
I booked a flight from Omaha to LAX on Saturday, December 28, at 4:31PM. I arrived at the airport at 2PM, and waited for my flight, the flight was delayed, to 5, then 5:30, to 5:46, and then cancelled altogether. The United Staff was unwilling to rebook me to another flight leaving that evening, so I was put on a 5AM flight on the 29. I attempted to get meal vouchers or a hotel for my 13 hour delay, but was refused. I spent the night in the terminal, only to find my flight delayed by another 13 hours to 6PM on the 29. I attempted to rebook, but United refused, despite allowing other passengers to get flights to the same destination. I also asked to use another airline, as customers in front and behind me got to rebook to American Airlines, this was also refused. United claimed a flight to LAX was cancelled, and I was unable to book it, only for me to find a person behind me in line was booked to that flight. Again, United refused to honor any compensation for my 28 hour delay. Eventually, I was able to book an American flight, after three hours of arguing with United.
It should be noted, they allowed all the white people to book new flights, but refused me, a Korean. Not saying it was discrimination, per say, but it was a strange turn of events, especially in light of the 2017 case.
Don't fly united ever again. Instead, fly their rivals. Just like my aunt hated KLM so she had to fly through Turkish Air Lines
Now that there’s direct flights to Taiwan on EVA air, we use them. United making my 72 year-old mom wait for 16 hours at LAX with no meal vouchers and constant (unannounced) gate changes was completely unacceptable. My mom was on the phone with me while I was online checking her flight status and telling her what gate to go to. I hope they go out of business. They suck.

I would never think of a business doing things like that to you because of your race. Things like this happen everyday it is ultimately up to the airline to compensate you for your time. I was traveling with my Grandfather who died on the trip and when I wanted to make a change they didn’t allow me and never refunded me for the flight. I had to fly on Delta, who luckily gave a bereavement fare.
Delta is the anti United. I was flying to Atlanta from newark, and asked if they could stick me on an earlier flight because my layover was too short. They went out of their way to help, and we didn't miss the flight. This was with the cheapest of basic economy tickets which usually makes airlines less helpful.
That's a highly unfortunate story. Sorry to hear about that. It's baffling to think it's unsurprising...

I had an experience where a United employee expected me to buy a ticket for a connecting flight under Delta due to multiple delays on United's end, so I arrived in Minneapolis without a flight out to my home thanks to United. Luckily, Delta was the MVP and managed to get me a flight home despite united's garbage.

Delta is really quite amazing. My late grandmother one time suffered a medical emergency on one of their flights during a trip. Not only did they pull an emergency landing so she could be transferred to a hospital, they also helped her book another flight back home once she recovered and even called a month after the incident to check up and ask how she was doing.
That alone has cemented my decision to prefer flying Delta whenever I am able.
Delta is the best airline followed by Southwest.

I've flown with United twice.The staff at LAX was extremely rude. Self-checkin was required, there were enough employees and check-in was about to close but all of them refused to help. The second time I flew from Tokyo to Lima with a layover in Houston. I was very confused about whether I should pick up my suitcase and check it in again. I asked ten employees and everyone told me something different. When I arrived in Lima, my bag was not there and it took one week to get it back.
Both times, the flights were hopelessly overbooked and I had to run to be assigned a seat so I wouldn't get kicked off the flight.

I'm noticing a trend; a lot of hated companies are monopolies or hold a great deal of control over the market. It seems that once a company knows its customers have no alternatives the leadership stops caring about PR and perhaps becomes arrogant.

I have never had a positive experience when flying United. They have lost and damaged my luggage; They have overbooked or cancelled several flights; They have keep me on planes stuck on runways for several hours. I will no longer fly United if I have any choice at all. I have passed on non-stop United flights and taken complicated multiple transfer flights with other airlines just to avoid dealing with United. So yes, I am one of those people who truly hates United.

Since I enjoyed Continental Airlines, I've had a soft spot for United as well post merger and I've had nice experiences flying with them internationally and domestically so United now I feel like has been getting better than they were a couple years ago
I flew United Airlines for the first time in my life in 2019 from Korea to the US. I was really scared to fly actually, not knowing what to expect from them. Thankfully, they didn't drag me out of my seat, nor damaged my luggage. Got back on time, however, the experience was a mediocre as I fly Delta Airlines often and they are my favorite airline.
Next time fly an Asian airline to or from Korea. The worst Asian airline is better than the best US airline.

Well I don't agree with how are at UA but I can also say the "customer is always right" it's not true in the airlines industry. There are rules and regulations they need to follow.
I used to fly Continental and was on the last Continental flight to HNL from DFW before the merger with United. I loved Continental. But for months after the merger, I could tell which airline the attendants worked for before the merger. Former Continental employees were friendly and helpful. The old United hands almost seemed to despise their customers. Your mileage may vary, but that was my experience. One thing is for sure, despite the old attendant's speech of "We appreciate you have a choice when traveling", you really don't anymore. And the airlines know it. I despise flying anymore. It is more an endurance race than a travel adventure anymore regardless of carrier. Flying is my last resort.

United flight attendants have been some of the nastiest people I have ever encountered in the course of a paid service. On a first class flight to Hawaii, they seemed to relish telling me I would not be getting a first class meal, because "you have fewer miles than anyone else in First Class." They also woke me up at the end of the flight by saying, "Where do you think you're going?!," because, being asleep, I was not deplaning. Like most true statements, here is one that is not very PC: the older ones are worse.

They aren’t selected because of their quality service and attitudes.

At my cargo airline we traveled UA frequently for positioning and deadheading. Our slogan for them was, "Fly Untied Airlines ...We're not happy until you're not happy".

Literally today, I missed my second leg of my trip because of a "technical" problem, resulting in an hour and half delay. Now I had to wait 11 hours for another flight. Not flying with them ever again.

Fun fact: N545UA (coincidentally shown at 5:45 in this video) made its first flight the very day I was born.
Sadly with the dog death incident in 2018, I found out that was a former Continental crew. Still the pre-merger United culture was worse than pre-merger Continental.

@Stinger Grail Apparently it was quite a turbulent flight. There was also a language barrier between the attendant and passenger. But that's no excuse for downright KILLING someone's pet like that. As to it being an experienced crew, most of those former Continental crews are good. This attendant didn't seem to understand, and was being forceful about doing the wrong thing.

If we absolutely have to have private companies at least we should force them to work for public good rather than private profit. On a trip to Hawaii, I decided to fly “First Class” on United just to “splurge” a little. What a big mistake!
*Flight attendant greeted me by saying, “So, you decided to fly the tacky airline today ugh?”
*Tuna sandwich for lunch.....other options were not available due to a food service “error”.
*In flight video entertainment also not available. The system had developed some “glitches “.

They're a large part of the airline market. When you combine that knowledge with the Customer satisfaction index, you can deduce that they're actually bringing the index down. In other words, their customer service is worse than what the graph already indicates.

I never thought UA had a bad reputation. I've flown with them and the worst problem I've had was a seat that was stiff but they gave me back 7,500 airline miles for it. Sure, it's not spectacular like it's partners such as Lufthansa or Singapore.
This airline actually earned our families trust when my parents were going on their honey moon to Hawaii (about 10-15 years ago). They were flying AA from IND - ORD - LAX - OGG. When they got to LAX they missed their flight to Maui because of a delay from Chicago. They contacted support about it and they were very rude to my parents. They would refuse to help them in any way let alone get them another flight. They ended up contacting UA as a second option and they explained their situation and they got them the rest of their trip free. My mom has been with them ever since and we haven't had many issues.
When searching for flights United doesn't even cross my mind.....ever.
only reason I ever flew United is because the little town some of my family lifted in only had a small airport with a single terminal, with a single gate, running a single airline, to only two locations... .and that airline was (you guessed it) United.
Since then, we endure a three hour drive to a larger city to fly American Airlines instead, and have been all the happier for it.

So the woman was planning her flight, and she asked customer support if it was ok for her to bring her hamster on the plane, and they said that it was perfectly fine. But then, once she got on the plane, an employee told her that the hamster wasn't allowed and that she either needs to release the hamster into the wild, flush it down the toilet, or miss her flight. So she had to flush it.
The dog one is truly horrifying and discusting. I feel really bad for those kids whose poor puppy died.

I can't say I've personally have had an experience like this, since when I was flying United (Continental at the time) I was still very young, but I remember that at some point, around 2009, my family stopped flying Continental and started using Delta, since I was young I didn't question it, but when I was in high school, I became curious as to why the change happened and my father told me about the bad experiences he had with the airline. Apparently late into one of our flights, to where ever we were going, my father got up to try to throw away a cup in which they gave him water, earlier in the flight (a quick note, my family isn't American, we are US citizens but at this point in time [when this incident happened] we were still living in Puerto Rico and so my father spoke very little English). When my Father reached the stewardess, she thought that he wanted water and was telling him that she couldn't give him water, for some reason, but my Father kept trying to explain what he actually was trying to do, the stewardess apparently became irritated and put water in a cup and pretended that her hand slipped and splashed my Father with water.

Oh! Another awesome United experience! During the early days of the pandemic when all the other airlines were practicing social distancing on the planes, I had to fly home because my father passed unexpectedly. The first same day flight was through Delta, and it was rather nice. Had an entire row to myself, and everyone was spaced out very well.
My flight back was through United and I figured they had to be doing the same thing as everyone else so I wasn't too worried about being on that flight.

My flight home was PACKED to the gills. I had a tiny old woman essentially resting on my shoulder the entire flight. On my next connection I brought up how uncomfortable I felt being that close to other people and expressed concern since every other flight was practicing soical distancing, the boarding attendant sighed and rolled her eyes before letting me know the flight was booked solid and there wasn't anything I could do unless I wanted to upgrade to a first class seat for $200. So flew again shoulder to shoulder with someone else, during the 1st peak of the pandemic in America...luckily I'm still healthy, but shit man.

4:10 they legit have some of the worst flight attendants. One guy hit my hand while he was passing me water so it would spill on another guy I was sitting next to. One attendant kept opening up a window after I closed it for TWO HOURS. I didn't bother asking her since I was trying to sleep. One of their employees in Dulles airport spun my $1000 Didgeridoo and it broke one of the carved ends in the box we put it in. I asked him to watch what he's doing and he just about flipped.
UA is hated because of shit flight attendants, baggage handlers who straight up don't care, and pilots who feel like they are about to wreck the plane.
I have a job that requires me to carry firearms, EVERYTIME I’ve ever checked my firearms through United they end up on the carousel at baggage claim.That is a big no no. For those who don’t know, when checking a bag containing a firearm they are specifically tagged to be hand carried to the pick up desk at baggage claim only to be released after verifying the ID of the person picking up the bag as the owner. United employees don’t care and always put them on the carousel for anyone to grab.
That is completely on the person dropping the bags. It is stressed heavily in training to walk firearms cases out to their owners. I've been harassed by passengers just for walking their cases out and asking to ID them because they believe I'm "infringing their rights" but I still do it because it is regulation.
Suddenly, my father suddenly shifting all of his flights to Delta makes sense.

Being a former employee of UAL, I can say this is on point. One reason you missed: the infighting of management at the corporate level. Which translated to a hostile work environment, and a less than friendly environment for the passengers. A very low vibrational airline to work for. However, I hear other airlines have some issues as well.

Whenever I fly United internationally, some how, my luggage gets put some where completely different. It sucks. Sometimes, I have to go out and buy more clothes because they put my luggage somewhere I don’t know. I hate them.

@@cubeguy5873 they're the cheapest one internationally. I flight to Mexico often, they are way cheaper than Delta (Delta is my favorite)
That sucks.. I do recommend storing some clothes in the bag you take to the plane. I have done it many times, no luggage is ever missing (I fly on Finnair) but it is good to be prepared!

again there are bad people in the world that do infiltrate all sorts of companies but that still does not mean that the company as a whole is a bad company
I fly pretty often internationally mostly to Europe, and I generally never fly American carriers. Not because of a dislike of American carriers, but normally tickets are cheaper, and the planes are usually newer if fly other carriers, especially Middle-Eastern or those from mainland Europe.
I recently flew United from New York to Paris about two months ago, and it was a really nice flight, on a pretty new plane and was well priced. I also once flew United in 2018 to munich on a pretty old plane, and that flight was average at best. PR & HR nightmares aside, I think it underwhelms me the most because United is pretty unpredictable in the service you're going to get, compared to Lufthansa or Emirates.
That, and their transatlantic hub nearest to me is Newark Liberty, and that is always disappointing.

Coming to this late, but over a decade ago I flew with a United Airlines employee on a Southwest flight. When I asked why she was on a Southwest flight and not United, she answered, “I may work for United, but I would never fly with them.” Stuck with me all these years later and I’ve never flown with United!
Growing up my father absolutely refused to fly on any united flight even if it was the only option we would just postpone the vacation a day or use another airport.

My school's orchestra took a United flight to New York to play a concert at Carnegie Hall. Almost a 1/4th of the class had their instruments damaged or broken.

I flew on a nearly empty airplane on United. Since I was seated in a row with another person and there were lots of empty rows, I took it on my self to move to an empty row. The flight attendant came over immediately and said "sir, you did not pay for that seat". That's the level of customer service I look forward to when I'm flying on United.
you actually cant do that on a plane. that will damage the weight of the aircraft and cause it to tilt to 1 side.

The Continental merger should never have been approved. Continental was a highly rated airline. After the merger, United thought they had a monopoly and starting gouging and providing poor service. They also layed off way more Continental employees who tended to be polite and kept the impolite United employees. I don't blame the employees. They are treaded poorly as you point out in the video. The Dr. David Dao case shows that even cattle are treated better than their customers.

I remember a few weeks after the 2017 incident my dad had a United flight and I was legitimately afraid. Never knew they were this bad, they should just be shut down. What an absolute joke of a company.
We in Houston loved Continental - great service, lots of jobs locally, etc. Then came the merger, with the understanding that United wouldn't be moving employees to Chicago. We know how that went. United's service is pretty bad, especially compared to Southwest for domestic and British Airways for international flights. Speaking of Southwest, it wasn't long ago that United fought tooth and nail in an attempt to prohibit Southwest from adding Latin America and the Caribbean - fortunately, Southwest prevailed.
At least United is consistent - you can count on the flights being delayed. About a week ago I flew Houston to Albuquerque on UA. The 12:35pm finally left the ground around 5pm. Around 3pm we were given $10 meal vouchers which we could use at any participating eatery in either airport within 24 hours (the ABQ restaurants were all closed by the time we arrived). They also noted that the voucher was not "compensation." At one point a customer was told we would be delayed boarding until 5:30pm when suddenly the attendant announced at 4:15pm that we all needed to get to the gate and on the plane - no social distancing or boarding group numbers mattered. Interesting, the Southwest flights leaving from Houston's Hobby Airport at roughly the same earlier time were all on time. The only two flights in the terminal that were delayed were both UA.
Returning to Houston, my 3:30pm flight was posted as delayed until 4:30pm. However, when checking in, I was informed that I could take the earlier flight at 1:15pm, which I actually could make! However, after making the transfer, the board then announced that the flight was now delayed - which lasted until 3:30pm. And once again, the Southwest flights back to Houston were all on-time.
And thank God we have options to fly internationally and avoid UA!
