Tonfa is the most practical and realistic karate traditional weapon by far.
And it is the most widely spread weapon among them.
It is employed as an official weapon by police force and law enforcements in a lot of countries.
Yet, it is funny enough that this amazing weapon is kind of chucked out form the window in its homeland, karate dojos.
If you have decent basic in karate, you have great potential to be able to use it better than anyone else.
I want to review its worth and revive its presence among karate community.
Here is the footage of my tonfa training with my friend, Willem.
In the training, we simulate the confrontational situation as realistic as possible.
If some of you take up tonfa after watching this video, it will be my greatest pleasure.
    Osu.

i appreciate that you actually go into a form of sparing. As a practitioner of weapon sparing (Heavy foam Fighting or DAG) i understand what a sparing session teaches. With all respect i do notice the lack of safety gear so intensity is forcibly and understandably held back. I would like to see a form of HEMA sparing match with proper gear of foam weapons so that intensity can resemble a common struggle. I am sure that Tonfa is an especially versatile weapon just like hook swords ( i bring this up because HEMA fan boys would discredit such a weapon with out seeing it used in sparing [ which there is a real Refereed fight with vs i believe a spear of sword]) that can useful but should be demonstrated in a full resistance sparing match. If this happens I will keep an eye out.

Many thanks, Jonathan. We are now figure out which protective gear to employ to push the intensity of sparring up.
Sword man can wear Kendo protectors.
And Tonfa guy? Maybe Nihon Kempo's gear?
      What do you think?

Thanks for posting. This was a very good video. There were a lot of techniques shown, but I learned a lot from using the Tonfa as a block. This video showed me a lot more techniques for blocking with the Tonfa; I did not realize it could be so effective with a block and trap move. Thank you for posting.

      Yes.
Tonfa has such a potential yet only few care about.
If you have solid karate background, it is not difficult to learn tonfa.
If you are a karate guy who has retired from sport competition should take up tonfa so that you can appreciate karate more!

In Williams attacks he seems to favor using the short part of the Tonfa to strike but this means he has to close distance slightly. I am wondering why he doesn’t just spin the Tonfa into the side of the opponents head. I would be interested in your comment of punching with the Tonfa versus spinning.

    • @tonfadojo-okinawa
      @tonfadojo-okinawa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Thank you very much, James. Spinning tonfa is super effective attack. It is extremely hard to read where it comes. Willem is very good at spinning tonfa and he can obviously do it if he wants. But in the form of free sparring (30% intensity), and we are not wearing any protective gears, so he deliberately NOT to spin it for SAFTY reason.

Well-practiced.Appreciate on your hard work and passion .But they are have some of problems in real life. In fact, we can't predict and control the bad guy because of their aggressive and sword, knife...are favor weapon is useful than tonfa. Some time, tonfa, baton, police stick... look like the toys with modest damage. Therefore, I hope you can fix and find out the best decision for us. Many Thanks.
