  • To buy the unquestionably brilliant Ducati 1098S you will have to pay a staggering £9,000 more than a used version of its predecessor the 999. Just think for the price of a new 1098S you can have used 999 and have enough change for leathers, a lid and a few track days.
    So, to find out if the new comer really is worth the extra, we took a 999 and a 1098S down to the Jerez circuit in Spain and entered them into an endurance race. Watch the video to see which option makes more sense

    Overlooked & underrated, still the 749/999 was a great sports bike. Owned my 749 three years now (& ridden it at Jerez trackdays). Sublime handling that never fails to impress. Whatever you think of the looks it's how it rides that really matters. Reliable too. We'll miss them now they're gone. Future classic status.

      I own one as a racebike and get lots of compliments on it everytime I am at the track. more compliments than the new V2 and V4 bikes

      It is a good looking bike. I think the problem is that it is completely different from any other ducati

    If the 999 is the most disliked amongst the "ducasti",then this would be the one I would choose.The fact that this may ostracise me from their "community" would make it the coolest Ducati for me.

    I own a 2006 999R with bst wheels and suspension setup properly and slicks. I have ridden a 1098S enough to know the 999R has more power up top and the 1098 has more midrange but steers like a truck. No doubt in my mind the 999R is a MUCH better bike. And to those boy racers out there who think a bike with more horsepower is better then you are clearly squids. The key to going fast is confidence, experience, smoothness and correct suspension setup.

    I know it looks unconventional and I'm on the side of minority opinion, but I'm one that loves the way the 999 looks. Bollocks to all you haters.

    Awesome comparison ! I am deciding which bike to buy and which would fit me ergonomically since I'm not tall. 5'6" with short torso. So I typed in the comparison and lo and behold, you've gone and done an actual back to back comparison. Bless you brothers. Couldn't be more pleased.

    I have a 1098S with the Full Termi system and I have to say...It's the best bike I've ever riden.

    Suffering in the 25° heat? Poor baby. We have a lot of road rash here because people don't wear their gear when it's 45°...25°would be seen as mild perfect riding weather here.

    not to mention, very hard to find for sale too. Theres alot of 848 1198 1098's for sale. But to find a 999S 999R or a good 999.. alot harder.... They were just a better made bike....

    Ive test rode a 1098s with open termi's. Awsome machine but never a 999. I hear that they steer different and with the 1098 i found no trouble or hard work. Maybe i should go test ride a 999 for the experience. Maybe he means the 1098 is hard work as your constantly accelerating and braking like mad and arriveing at the corners with more speed.

    1098 looks better, is faster and needs less maintance but you can now get a 999 for quite a bit cheaper.

    He basically says 'The 1098 is a better bike, but it costs more'. Did he really need to do an endurace race to tell us that?

    There's a model between these two and I suspect the results would have been much closer. Oh, and 25 degrees C is a standard winter's day down under.

    I've not rode a 999 but the 1198s and the bike I rode handled perfectly compaired to the standard 848 and 1098. I don't know if it was because its an s model or it was just set up well. I personally like the looks of the 1098/1198 range better than the 999. Lets not forget that many of these bikes have so many adjustments, they can all be made to suit a rider better. There all good bikes really. I might get an 1198s, not just for speed and cornering but fo the newer engine and maitainance.

    Well I'm actually saving for a 1098s or 1198 possibly. I decided I would like a newer model and after I test rode an 1198s an 848 and streetfighter s and 1098. I still haven't made up my mind but the top suspention on the 1198s and the streetfighter s has made me relise how much I desire the handling. I even found it handled better than the 848. So for me i'm thinking of either 1098s or 1198. The streetfighter was awsome but I like faired bikes. The torque makes you smile.

    I've recently been curious to what a 999 is like to ride, i've rode a 1098 and sometimes considering buying one but with the price of a 999, it's kinda tempting, Would I be dispointed with the engine and how does it handle compaired with a 1098 ?

    you are. the 999 came before the 1098. after the 1098 ducati just came out with the 1198... then on top of that they released the desmoseideeci which is a motogp replica aka suicide on two wheels.

    @AroonR6 yes i know what you mean, but always remember that ducati has always dictated terms in design styling, you say 1098 is more similar to an r1 than a 999 is, true, but the japaneses copied ducati design of the 916/996/998 in order to improve their bikes. the same happened with the exaust: ducati was the first with the exaust under the seat, than yamaha and honda copied it for the R1 and the CBR. what i'm triing to say is: japanese are similar to ducati but not viceversa :)

    Pretty much. The British are known to us Americans as having a slightly wackier style in some ways...but at least he's a cool guy. Let the women decide his style :) (nice bikes btw)

    for 5 thousand pounds! thats amazing! even old second hand ones on Aus you'll be looking at 19 grand (around 9 thousand pounds. id kill for value like that on such and amazing bike! even if it is the ugely duckling haha

    Im a Ducatista at hart but the 9 (meaning termination on 9) series are the ugliest bikes they made, like some one said that never happened.
