Two of my favourite bikes of all time
2008 they named it 1098R for marketing reasons to support the base model 1098. Due to it was a homologation model for WSBK , they couldnt change the name once it was homologated. Only a few 1198R Corse special series were made after a couple years (and after WSBK exit). The only difference of 1198R and 1098R (MY09) is the Aluminuim tank and the color. 1098R (MY08) has a older generation DTC, less oil pressure, and a higher quality crankcase in comperision to 1098R MY09/1198R. HP is all the same
No there are significant differences in the engine between the 1098r and 1198r. The 1098r, which actually displaces 1198cc is significantly more powerful and closer to an actual race bike.
@@poncoolride ALL 1098/1198 R models were the same displacement - 1198cc.

Not all Buells sport Harley engines. Toward the end Erick Buell started to use the Austrian Rotax engine on their race oriented bikes, which really stepped up the performance. Still they had to bend the rules to get the Buell to win the AMA title it now carries. If I lived in a world where I had to chose between an American Buell or an Italian Ducati based only on performance it would be the Duc that would win my dollars. Still I love both to be honest.

I'm usually sold with MCN reviews but I refuse to believe the 1098 is faster than the Desmosedici on any track :P. Perhaps if it was Sete Gibernau on the Desmosedici and Troy Bayliss on the 1098 I would believe it

I could have bought either bike today. A second hand D16RR for $80,000 or a new 1098R Bayliss Edition for $50,000(marked down from $60,000 for a mid year sale). I took the 1098R.

So true about personal preference of bike. I mean honestly, by the Desmosidici should walk all over the 1098 but in order to accurately compare both bikes, you require a extremely skilled rider who will push both bikes to the limit. I personally like the look of the 1098R, however the Desmo is something to be honored. As far as I know, it is the first time a replica MOTO GP bike has been manufactured for the public. Yes there are replica SBK versions of the 1098R and respect to that bike.
So, the Desmosedici has taller gearing...maybe that is why they put on a "16" inch tire? You screwed the pooch on the test when you changed the rear tire to a "17" inch tire. Changing tire diameter changed final gear ratio. Which is the fastest from the factory...maybe the Desmo?
If MCN has money to test these two bikes, they have enough money to buy some noise filters and record good, clean footage of a few amazing bikes racing. They either put music in their videos and cover up the noises we all come here to hear or they don't put music and all you hear is wind. If this is a motorcycle news corp you'd expect some better production.
Finally a decent MCN video! Well Done. The only question left unanswered is which Ducati left the dirty big oil trail over the racing line:)
The DD RR is like a shelby supersnake. Excessive HP, loud, and beautiful to watch. But I agree with the host I would stick with the 1098R. its sleeker, has more managaeble HP and cant possibly be beat in turns.
Good video. Both amazing bikes. But did they use the 1198 they show at 0:22 or did they use a 1098?
@Countavery The engine is actually 1198cc. It's because Ducati took advantage (despite calling it a 1098) of the 1200cc cap.

@rarerrac the 1098R should still have a 1098R sticker regardless. I think it's simply because it's a track bike and with track bikes, you slap on whatever fairings you have after it goes down.

I was fortunate enough to own both the desmosedici and 1098R -`09 model, along with a few others, both were suited to track days and anyone who tried riding one on the road would regret it before too long - but it was a lot of fun..

I ride an 1198 and totally worth the money!! Rides better with more speed
First off, I'm an American. Second, any American who claims that harleys are faster or cheaper than the Ducati bikes is naive. However, claiming that they are "better" may be a matter of opinion to some people. Personally, I am a huge fan of Ducati, Aprilia, and the Italian bike makers in general. I own a Ducati Monster and I want to get one of the superbikes down the road.
Anyway, I just wanted to make it clear that there are Americans who appreciate good Italian bikes, too.
@hvkv0000 because its a motogp replica bike, that engine is only produced for sale in the desmosedici rr, thats why
@17james17 You are correct, all Great American Riders. However in my original post i meant to write some Great American riders currently competing at the top level and included Colin Edwards.
I'd love to be on a Desmo for the fact that it's a totally rare bike even though the 1098R is special as well. But for exclusivity nothing looks like the Desmo. You can always just get a standard 1098 or 1098S if you cant afford the R. But there is no cheaper version of the Desmo.

Question: Are there height difference between the 16" and 17" wheel and tyre combo If so do you think it would have given the DESMO the edge it needed? [i.e. slightly shorter rolling surface = slightly quicker ratios?]

I ran into an inline rider who said that he didn't like the sound of the dry clutch and would never buy a Ducati because of it. I would never buy a Ducati with a wet clutch, it's just an attempt to attract inline riders. I wish that Ducati would just stick to what they do best, which is everything that sets them apart from the others.
The 1098R has actually 1198cc. You can read the specs on the ducati site!
@Countavery technically the 1098R is an 1198. The 1098 and 1098 S had 100 fewer cc's than the R version. Maybe this guy just put the 1198 logo on it to look cool at the time, not knowing the 1198 would be real in a year or two.

I don't think, for a long time anyway, that anything is going to as gorgeous as the 1098, the Pannigale does not make me shake.
i never really liked the 848 series i mean they did look a bit nice but they were trying to merge a 916 and a panigale and it just turned out as a pointy 916 uggh
Till those day, the 1098\1198 is the prettiest thing and a torque monster. Good thing I'm getting my hands on one :)
@pantsman29 The Aprilia RS250 is a different class from MotoGP. it was in the Moto250 class if memory serves me...

The Desmo is a limited edition racing 1198.
i remember someone made a joke out if through a slogan on a poster which states 'Ducati, making mechanics out of owners since 19.....'

@stek1979 The Repsol Honda 1000RR has the decals of a MOTO GP bike but the Desmo is replica from the frame all the way thru.
I'd like to see a test with the same rider on each bike and with the stock wheel size.
Umm... Hmm... They say the Desmo was geared too tall, but they put a larger rear wheel on it?
Buy a 1198 and ride the thing and save the cash. Leave the Desmosedici to the rich guys who think they can buy skills or think it will impress girls, lol. No woman could tell the price difference between a Desmosedici and a 1198, to them they both will look cool, but a nice car will look cooler, lol :)

1098R was never a $20K bike. This bike cost $40K (2008) and $44K for the 09/10 models when new and had an 1198 engine size. The regular 1098/1098S engine is actually a 1099 in displacement! They were called 1098, solely because a U.S tax form also being called the 1099 and therefore Ducati decided not to use the actual engine size for the name! Actual Horse power of the 1098R vs 1198R(last year of production) is identical at 180 at the crank.
desmosedici is still one of the best looking bikes imo

The Desmo rider was pretty rough - he frequently makes corrections while turning. When measuring how bikes compare the rider should lap in a very consistent manner.

Iy would have been better if they went more into detail with the bike's eg lap times' if they rode both bike and there times respectfully. the guy on the 1098 looks alot stronger on the brakes wonder how he went on the desmo?

I just checked where this dude is from, and hes an Aussie, thus explaining the apparently higher purchase price.
While you can still buy Buells and Harley will honor their warranties, sadly Harley Davidson dropped the Buell line and does not have plans to make any new ones. Erik Buell has gone back to racing, well building race prepped Buells for interested buyers. If I had the money I would pick one up right now as it very well could become a collectors item in the future. As for me I am looking into Norton, Triumph and Ducati I don't have the money for a Buell right now.
He says that they made modifications to give the desmo a chance the desmo is faster and a better bike the 1098r is just behind that. 1198r is probably even with desmo and don't hate I know what I'm talking about my dad is a rep for ducati.

@emtildeath Actually mate I'm 27 :P I'm in Ireland atm working, but will be going back to Canada in 3 yrs where they'll hopefully be around $50 000 in a few years, which is doable
But anyway, I just checked autotrader and the cheapest was £35 000, if they were £25k now, I'd probably sell my Multistrada, buy a scooter to get to work and then buy the Desmo IMMEDIATELY! :)

@bradlez996... a 2nd hand Desmo for $80K??? You would've gotten ROBBED considering they sold new for $72.5 (w/out a previously purchased 999r) and they go on eBay all the time for around $60K.
Either way you couldn't have gone wrong on any of those bikes--- just on the purchase price!
If I had $20000 bucks and oh something like $500 extra a month available, I would run right out and get me one o'them there 1199 Panigale S babies just for going to the track. How freaking fun would that be?!

ouch the 1098R is faster? I mean the Desmo is almost a 6 figure price tag...the only reason to get it would be exclusivity i guess...personally out of all ducs i'd have the 749 or the 848...that's just me though

iiredeye, You're the biggest fanboy I have seen here. I have read all 100 comments that came before yours and not one mentions a Harley. The only thing American that comes anywhere near close to a Duc is a Buell and they do not race WSBK. So Buell is not yet close to Ducati. Aside from a hand full of open minded sport bikers the commentary here is a Ducati fans dream.
