    Can you tell a difference between the SM58 and SM7B?

    • @DystopianOwl
      @DystopianOwl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. I already have the SM85, it's a great mic, mostly for live purposes. But for recording vocals/podcasting/streaming, I would say the SM7B is the way to go. I'm getting one to complete my mic arsenal!

      not enough to care. the SM58 does just as good a job, and when you listen to pdcasts you dont have a delta reference... so nobody would ever know.

      Whilst sound is very important for video, I think that 7b is a luxury a lot of people can’t afford but they buy it anyway because it looks good. But for those that can afford it, it does have some smoothness, but I don’t think that for $300 more there would be much gain for most people. Good content with Sm58 will be the same for fans as good content with 7b unless your audience really care about the beauty of 7b. 7b markets better, but most real engineers are happy with an 58

      hOLA CLARO QUE SI EL SM58 ES ESPECTACULAR MAS BRILLOSO EL SM7B ES MAS LIMPIO EN ESOS ASPECTOS ADICIONAL QUE 400 $ POR SM7B CONSIDERO QUE ESTA MUY SOBREVALORADO.

    This was a great video! One thing I love is that even though this is 3 years old, microphone technology hasn't really changed in forever. So these comparison videos still hold up years later, and will still be relevant in 5 more years.
    I've decided to get the SM58, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, and a basic mic stand/shock mount.
    In the future, when finances allow for it, I'll upgrade to a boom arm and an SM7B, but I don't want to keep putting it off, when it's clear that the SM58 is really really good!
    The only thing that I don't like is that you didn't put a link to the microphone stand in the description. There is a link to a Rode PSA 1 boom arm, but that's not what you were using.
    If there is a link to the mic stand, I didn't see it, and apologize.
    But it looks really nice, and I'd love to find it.

    Great video dude. I’ve had the SM58 for years and was looking for a new Mic because I was always having to push the volume up in post leading to too much noise etc.. but now I’m thinking maybe i just need a cloud lifter/fethead or something instead. Keep up the good work, I’ll be keeping an eye on the channel

    The SM58 really is a miraculous mic. Don’t think about the price bc Shure has probably made several million dollars more than what they could have ever imagined. It’s all free money for them. Now - this guy has an amazing speaking voice. Don’t expect to sound this good with a 58 or SM7B unless you are equally gifted. :-)
    I would not listen to his electronic/technical advice. The part about analog to digital conversion intimating some sort of sound degradation. No. It’s analog wave forms converted to one’s & zeros friends. No degradation.

    Hi, I want to record my written poetry professionally. Suggest me a good audio interface and microphone. But my room is not sound proof. The sound from outside comes inside our room. If I use Audio Technica 2035 mic and Shuru SM 58, then what will be the difference between the two? And which audio interface would be better for ShureSM 58. In which there is no noise and the quality is also good at the time of recording.

    Was going to upgrade from the SM58 to the SM7B or the Anton Stealth but after watching some videos I'm not sure I'm going to gain much, especially if I just add a pop filter to the SM58. Apparently a lot of pro studios still use SM58's all the time. Thank you for the video!!! You saved me some money...at least for now.

    Hey Chris, awesome video! I'm starting a two person podcast here at home and the SM58 looks great. I'm thinking of the scarlett 2i2 interface, do you think I need a cloudlifter for that?

    • @HeyCMH
      @HeyCMH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would test it out and see if it provides a discernable difference...you can always return it if it doesn't. Your voice can play a role in it so me vs you might be totally different, in my experience.

    Do you think a windscreen is also better for singing??

  • @dickginkowski6071
    @dickginkowski6071 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Both are very good microphones. The SM7b was somewhat smoother on your voice WHEN you were on-axis and closer to the mic. Some of your SM7b recording was a bit off-axis and when it was you were closer to the SM58. Is the SM7b worth $400? I think yes and no. It (like the EV RE-20) has a cult-like following (and for good reason). But, as you identified, the microphone design makes it difficult to be versatile. I think it's time for Shure to give us an SM7c -- same mic, same sound, but a bit more versatile design in the housing.

    Thanks for the video. Can you please help me with an issue i am having with the zoom h4n pro and sm58 set up? I have very limited understanding of recording. I have a shure sm 58 and a zoom h4n. I only record voice overs on this set up. But there is too much white noise. Its so much that if i remove it in the post, the quality of the audio is also getting poor. Can you suggest any solution for this? Is there a setting that i can do to at least minimise the noise?
    I am loosing out on work because of this. I have spent all of my savings on this. Please help me.

    Imo the sm7b handled the plosives better than the sm58. But do you think a foam and a pop filter would make the sm58 sounds like the sm7b? Cause the price gap between them are quite significant, for me at least lol. But the sound quality is quite the same for my ear. The difference was just the plosives

    • @HeyCMH
      @HeyCMH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would play around with a few and see. Positioning makes a big difference too. I'm used to sitting right up on my SM7B, but certain mics, the the MV7, seem to require further distance from the mic to sound their best.

  • @SiriusXAim
    @SiriusXAim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only real difference is the SM 7B is a tad easier to talk into. It's the same Unidyne 3 capsule inside with a more forgiving pattern and no transformer to boost the audio.

    • @HeyCMH
      @HeyCMH  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to know

    • @SiriusXAim
      @SiriusXAim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HeyCMH Actually, small clarification, It's the same pattern, just a tad wider which makes the drop-offs less noticeable when moving around in the studio. I forgot that it only is cardioid for a minute and confused the coloring switches at the back w pattern options. Woops, muh bad.
      Sound wise, the transformer in the 58 is what gives that specific sound we all know and love, while the SM 7B will sound more flat and natural.
      The 7B also has superior shock absorption, and shielding. As well as a slightly altered capsule design to house the unidyne.
      You can actually make your 58 sound as flat as a 7B by removing the transformer, but that's a pretty messy process.

  • @VirtuelleWeltenMitKhan

    You can clearly hear the main strength of the SM7B.
    Even if the user does have a bad mic technique you get better results aka less plosives.
    The SM58 was positioned very bad, the SM7B a little better. The SM58 is in plosive hell even with the extra foam (and the SM58 has some additional foam integrated in its grill).
    I think you cat get away with a SM58 when you take more care of using it. Heck, you can create great results if you use it right.
    On the other hand the SM7B is harder to set up you need just a little more gain than for the SM58. But even the SM58 needs a lot of gain.
    If you want the SM7B sound get the SM7B. Buying the SM58 to modify the result to sound more like the SM7B will end up meh (or you know how to EQ super well). The SM58 does not sound better or worse than the SM7B but different.
