    Nice idea and well done. It will make a great light-duty press. Press fits under 10mm are difficult as heating and chilling metal doesn't gain much clearance.
    Everything that is made of steel flexes. When one part is strengthened another part has a problem when more stress is applied. I suspect the down feed may be the next part to have problems. If not the down feed then thin cast Iron walls of top housing may give up the ghost.

    Like you say not for the heavy stuff but there are always lots of little push fits that if you drive them home with a hammer… the ends get damaged and this little press saves all of that. We could all use one Regards Stuart from NE England.

    I enjoyed watching that build. I did a similar thing with an old drill press where I used a long threaded shaft to make a kind of fly press. I had the same issues with rigidity and have hardly used it. I used the original column, and that was the most bendy bit. I was also worried that the casting would break where the cut out is for the electrics. You have inspired me to have another go, I have some more substantial material now, so should be able to beef it up!

      @@Rustinox I most likely will, when the motor burns up or something breaks. In the mean time, it has a place in the midget machine works group. Good for spot drilling, or starter holes before moving over to the big Buffalo. Provided you can hold the part in place in spite of all the vibration.

    • @Rustinox
      @Rustinox  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tuning a drill press in to a milling machine doesn't work. It's not possible to make it rigid enough. Plus, the taper that holds the chuck is not designed to take side loads.

    I was hoping you would turn the drill press into a small milling machine. As an arbor press, it's a bit limited with a lot of column flexing. I have a similar Chinese drill press and I'm considering turning it into a mill by modifying the head to mount on a square column.
