- Mors shows how to make a knife, just like the ones he and Tom Roycraft started making back in 1967. They made these as a class set of knives they would use in instructing the survival courses their ran. Students would use them and then turn them back in when the class was done. Mors explains more about this before he demonstrates how they did it.

Thanks Mors! I'm a knifemaker and I appreciate this style of knife so much that I started making my own version after I first read how you used to make them so seeing a video now is fantastic. I also find it funny how many knifemakers and bushcrafters alike would scoff at this video if it was anybody other than Mors doing it.
I see my self making a number of these in the future!

Kochanski was king of the baton! Anyone who has read his books knows that. He'd use a baton on that knife to work his way through a 4-6-inch green spruce if needed.
@@IdahoSewingI kind of understand what he is saying but if you understand what Mors Kochanski's description of a knife is, it is a pry bar that works wood well. Not too sure the one in the video fits the bill of prying but probably a decent enough one for learning carving skills.

You make it look way too easy! I lost count of how many times I could screw up the process! Using a hockey stick for the handle is ingenious, as is using an aluminium nail for a rivet!
I'm looking forward to the next video where you finish sharpening the knife.

Sir, you are a treasure trove of self reliance and bushcraft knowledge. I for one am very grateful that you are sharing your vast amounts of skill and knowledge with us here in your videos. I respect your skill and experience far above that of the highly regarded media 'semantics', 'accepted procedures' and 'name brands' of most other video venue, so commonly found on the Internet as of late. If I were to be lost in the wilderness, I would much prefer your company and help to any of the celebrated myriad armchair bushcraft survivalists that disregard your skill and technique, so abundant here on TH-cam.

@King Henry05, it’s not crazy at all. Wilderness skills is 90% knowledge (mentality) and 10% tools/gear.
The more you know, the less you need.
I'm only 55 now but in another decade or two I could so see this being me. Especially after I retire. I'm such a tinkerer and hands on jack of all trades, just never seem to have enough time to do the things I want to. So many ideas so little time.
Great video, I agree with you 100 % everyone wants these big flashy survival knives but all you need is something lightweight and simple just like you made in your video. They will take days making 1 knife and the one you make you can make 20 a day. Thanks for the information I'm glad to see you are still enjoying the knife making business.

I like how flexible his mind is.
No complaints about the material or equipment.
He's just accessing the properties of what he has and goes to make most of it.
For education, it would be nice if his students would make their own knife under supervision.
Also learning with something barely usable gives them a better chance to not break a real knife later.
These knives have been made several times with students at Rat Root Rendezvous both with Mors and Randy and Randy has done several classes doing these knives on the road sort of speak.
I really enjoyed this video. I was a professional knife maker ( made 18th century knives and axes mostly) for many years and while most I forged out I have made more then a few knives like this out of old saw blades.
Saw blades while they will make OK knives as is they are normally to soft to make really good knives unless you harden and temper the blades.
Thin steel like this is easy to harden just the cutting edge and leave the back and tang soft.
Really is easier to just drill through the handle and blade at once to make sure they line up. I used an old hand crank drill press many times.

Some of the younger viewers wouldn't know what actual SURVIVAL was if it jumped up and bit them! I'm 62 and not looking forward to where this Nation is heading!
Most of the things that Mors and Tom were teaching in the 60s still apply today! Technology has come a very long way since then, BUT in a real survival situation, technology goes out the window and necessity and imagination/innovation are the words for the day! Worrying about a paper cut test will be the absolute least of ones worries. I was one of the kids who learned a lot from being the mouse in the corner, listening a watching my parents and older folks rather than most of my friends who found "other" things to do. Now, at 62, I'm wishing I had paid even more attention to the elders that I had access to! Kudos on the videos, Mors! Keep up teaching the younger generation and some of us older folks, too!!
Your the Man Mr. K, great video, and because of You, I got myself the Rod Garcia Skookum Bush Tool, I like carrying it as my neck knife, it is a bit heavy, but mine is a tich shy of a 4" blade lenght and it is a four finger lenght, we'll it also depend's where I measure it from, but I luv that size, the full size handle is a must for me too, I'm surfing the Tube because just a few hour's ago I got one of my knives I had ordered from Swamp Rat, my Rodent 4 arrived, and what a beauty, I just happen to like a choil on my blade because it allow's me to really choke up on the knife for delicate work, I also had it thinned down a little, it's very close to 4 3/4" and almost 3/16 thick by about 1 1/4" wide, just shy of that which to me is perfect, the knife is a strong knife, and when I buy a knife I remember what you say a knife should be, I wish I had your talent to just whip a knife up like you just did on this video, but I don't have the equipment, yeah I also think my new knife would make a netting needle, but I'm not sure if I'm good enough to make one in 5 minute's heh heh heh , anyhow great video, I think Your the best, please continue doing video's because I really enjoy them, again Thank You, and have a belated Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

Great video. By the way you can have another set of jaw inserts made to make your vise big enough. Just unscrew the ones in there and replace with the bigger set. They will handle that thin of steel.

This knife is very similar to the one Horace Kephart designed way back when. A timeless, functional design that actually can be made by hand. And a hockey-stick handle to give it a Canadian flavour! Nice!

He could easily pass as my polish Grandfather. My grandfather only had to buy basic tools, he would make the rest.
It’s 2018 and going into November, I’m 64 years old.
We lived in New Jersey, it was pretty nice back then.
At work one day someone broke a Nicholson power hacksaw blade, I GRABBED it. I shaped it on the grinder left the hacksaw intact, put an edge on it. I used a bicycle handgrip (a good one). I filled the grip with silicone sealer. It worked so well one of the shop guys stole it before I had a chance to use it. That blade held an excellent edge, it was made to cut through steel and the saw blade was a bonus.
Well some lucky thief got a very nice knife 🔪. I’ve owned morakniv tools since then , they are pretty good tools in carbon or stainless.
The grinder my grandfather had was the old air raid hand crank type, it was really nice , I mean for us it was perfect. It clamped to the bench top solidly.
Anyway, my grandfather was a jack of all trades.
And this video is amazing.

I had to chuckle a bit watching him and his messy working area....you should see mine...lol. Not as bad as his but getting there. I like to call it organized chaos.
If you use these as knives and not pry tools they will work just fine. Problem is nowadays people don't use knives for knife things. I used a saw blade from around the 80s maybe early 90s skill sae style. It was VERY hard steel, once ya get an edge it holds it quite well . I think making these knives looks cool , they have a very unique style and it's fun .

But…..but…I thought you had to pay $500 for a knife good enough for the bush! Although artistically captivating and emotionally moving, the "Custom Knife" climate that exists today, tends to discourage most folks; anywhere from 300 to 500 bucks a piece, and wait times of well over a year, may confine such blades to collectors. But regular folks on a budget are not going to pay, or wait for such a tool that will be covered in soot, sinew and pine sap minutes after it's unwrapped from it's box. There are a lot of functional and affordable knives out there that you can trust your life with; and if one has the opportunity, a bit of personal pride can be gained by making one for him or herself. Aesthetics has never been a vital ingredient of survival. As usual, thanks for keeping it basic and down to earth Mors.

In a survival situation, there may not be any electricity. This is easy w/ all of those tools.
W/ no electric, a forge will be a handy tool.
No Electricity...
1. Cold Chisel
2. Ball Peen Hammer
3. Hand Saw
4. Punch
5. Bastard File
Same process, just slower, but it can completely be accomplished.

hmm with all due respect to Mors... in a real survival situation...how do we make a knife like that?..wouldnt it be more sound to say that this is a knife we can take it in the bush that will do the needful....and wouldnt it be more useful to show that in a survival situation a cutting tool can be made from these materials..etc...that would be so innovative and meets more to the necessity of reality...but then thats imho ..great vid ty karamat and Mors

***** Why no overhang? Personally, that's the only thing I could think of as a problem. I like that, as it does help if you have a sudden "what if?" situation & it keeps your grip from "creeping" up the handle while slippery (your hand flexing when cutting can get you a nick- I know, I know, you're supposed to be careful).
Also, maybe a smaller handle diameter (for holding it while wearing work or winter gloves)? Something that Fallkniven does. It would also let you wrap it with leather without increasing the handle size to the point where that turns into a grip problem. My own hands are broad, but not very long- so I think about that a bit, but it would overlap in a workable way for people with longer hands.
Just suggestions. By-the-way: Do you guys have any plans to make a roll-up say that works with a frame, like in that Survival Saws video from a little while back? I remember Mors had said the one toward the end would be "astounding" if it could be used with a frame. Would love to have a large saw that would fit in a coat pocket! Especially if it was one you could re-sharpen.
