MVG is such a beautiful human being, what he has done to videogame community is priceless, he deserves much more credit ! Thank you, John and DF for this interview
Yeah now you mention it, MVG at the very least as a guest host would make perfect and total sense. He could offer a lot of technical insights to compliment what John and Rich and Alex typically do, especially when discussing why performance drops on console ports.
@@dummymannequin7272 You said it! When I see him as a part of "game journalists" team such as RGT 85 and some others, I feel bad for him. It's like seeing a student with good grades smoking behind the garage with a bunch of dropouts.
@@Drilbit good question lol, I'm sure I have seen one of them discussing a leak and I know Audi was a guest on MVG's channel. If I find it I will let you know, if I don't I must have imagined it. 😀
MVG was mentioned once in DF's 1M subs livestream, and there's a good chance that he had made a contribution here and there, but this is, as far I know, the very first time MVG appears in a DF video in the flesh. As mentioned previously, Audi was credited in some of MVG's videos.
29:36 The OPN2 chip used in the Mega Drive / Genesis is an interesting case for emulation accuracy. Since it's such an iconic sound but has zero support from Yamaha (who have since lost or disposed of any official documentation), the community has gone to great lengths to reproduce it accurately, to the point where there's now a cycle-accurate open-source C library called nuked-opn2 that can be found on GitHub and seen in various different emulators. It was built using die-shot taken from a de-capped YM3438 - a compatible ASIC reimplementation of the original YM2612 - and so is able to emulate the mentioned ladder effect, as well as undocumented features like the SSG-EG (Software Sound Generator / Envelope Generator) function that originated from an ancestor chip, but was hobbled and left unmentioned (presumably as a way to offer a cheaper chip without significantly modifying the fabrication process). I'm in the process of porting nuked-opn2 to Rust, which has involved learning a lot of the chip's history in my search for community documentation, and it's fascinating stuff. Would love to see a DF Retro episode diving into the audio chips that powered various iconic game sounds before the shift to digitized audio, and where they stand today in terms of preservation and community interest.
Excellent video, as usual. These one-on-one (or two-on-one, as it were) interviews feel intimate, and insightful. By the way, Sameboy recently got an "LCD Display" shader that looks fantastic. It's one of my favorite two shaders ever made.
I was fully expecting MVG to hack and reverse engineer the DF channel. MVG is one of my fave channels... great of you guys giving him some of the spotlight.
This sounds great, but i would love to hear a few more technical details about the Carbon engine and how it's used to achieve a port like Shantae. Is it basically an emulator as a lib, where you compile the emulator, a binary image of the game, and a some platform specific code to make sure the new platform (e.g. Switch) experience is genuine? Any tricks that you do behind the scenes that most emulators don't do? E.g., do you still have a cpu emulator for whatever platform you're emulating, or are you statically translating binary code to the new platform? Excited about the Carbon engine, and a few technical details would be very welcome :) Cheers! (edit:just typos)
This project & interview is fantastic. I never played any of the Shantae game before. Because I could not find a copy of the game way back when. It is amazing to play this series finally after so many years. I hope that more game boy & GBA titles are brought to the Switch very soon. There is a vast library to dive into.
This is a great video! Big fan of DF/MVG. Have you guys heard much about the memory failures with 3DS carts? Persona Q, Pokémon games etc? Some fear it could be an issue on Switch as well.
For a DMG emulator you need a good dot matrix emulation this is true. But if you want the REAL experience it needs to emulate random columns of pixels dying and trying to fix it with a hair dryer!
Thanks for acknowledging MVG's dedication and hard work all these years, DF, he means a lot to people in the emulation scene.
@@youtubesuresuckscock Who hurt you?
MvG deserved this interview, and I am not even talking about his Shantae work.
Lol.
MVG is such a beautiful human being, what he has done to videogame community is priceless, he deserves much more credit ! Thank you, John and DF for this interview
Finally, MVG on DF.
You have to be a part of this team, not just as an indie developer!

John is Nick Fury assembling The Tech Avengers lol.
The collaboration that was always meant to happen! Great to see MVG on DF.
MVG is great but this is not the first time on the show by the way.
@@jimmelton5846 When was his first time on the show?

Man, John and MVG on the same video... My ears are pleased, those are some smooth voices
DF x MVG the ultimate collaboration!

John, Audi and MVG! Great
Hopefully one day we'll see games released like movies with an audio commentary, different versions, a making of doc, etc on a disc.
MVG , you're one of the best :)
Damn I love that RTX blur.
Love the new intro!

MVG x DF???
This is the crossover of my dreams
Wooo MVG on DF!
(Spawnwave related) Seeing Missclick and Essence on Nintendo Minute I thought was awesome and such a boost for them. But *DF X MVG!?*
I love this!
I'd vouch for an AG forums member from the glory days, LuigiBlood.
This video is so awesome! When worlds collide!
Ah Same fox strip poker on the C64, those were the days lol
what were the secret games to use for emu testing? and why are they secret?
This is awesome!!
