A song about Neil hearing from geddy's mother about her experiences in the Nazi Concentration Camp. Geddy's parents met there, fell in love and lost touch for awhile before reconnecting and settling in the Toronto area. A most moving story.

This was when Rush was well into their Progressive New wave phase. This is kinda my favorite era of Rush.. but then I'm an 80s kid. The metalhead in me loves the 70s stuff..also the later material.. but the 80s kid in me loves this sound. I know some purists hate it.. but... whatever.

I remember when I saw Rush live during the Clockwork Angels tour, and they played this song. On the line "Shouting guards and smoking guns" they had indoor pyrotechnics shoot up behind the stage right on the beat. This was TD Garden in Boston, so we're talking about an indoor venue.... when those pyros went up, I nearly shit myself. *Booooooom!!!* but as soon as I realized we weren't getting bombed, I was like "Yeeeaaaahhhhh!!!" and the whole audience was throwing their fists up and cheering. Best concert I've ever been to.

I know you get a bazillion requests, but I highly recommend "Analog Kid" from the "Signals" album. So upbeat and fun to listen to. Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said that song was his first attempt at non-fiction, and that he (his words now) "for the longest time stepped into characters until I had my own confidence and technique to be able to step outside them as a writer." This song rips!

This album, Grace Under Pressure, contains Rush's most serious lyrics. It was released during the rise of the Reagan administration when the US military was in the midst of a buildup. I was in the US Navy at the time and I saw the money that was being spent.
Anyway, this track is very apocalyptic in nature and sort of falls on the heels of the opener, "Distant Early Warning" (see the official video). "Red Sector A" is more of a concentration camp theme. I took it as a subject dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear war and the rounding up of the survivors. I remember buying the album new on cassette tape and playing it so much that I wore it out!!
Thank you for reacting to a semi deep cut. The live performance of the song on the "Show of Hands" concert DVD. Rush was one of the first bands to use computer programming for their light show, and the music samples they recorded (that each of the 3 guys would sequence during their concert - Geddy Lee mostly).

GREAT tune and reaction, Grace is one of my favorite releases despite not liking it a whole lot when it came out. Put it on a back burner for years and when I broke it out again I really came to appreciate it a lot! This is the first release where Neil used electronic drums, featured in this song. He also did something else during this song, he uses both of his ride cymbals in the pattern, pretty damn cool when I saw it live in concert.

I remember well when this album came out. It was the first tour that I got to see live. The critics of this album, Grace Under Pressure, said that it was dark and heavily political. In fact, it was a resurgence for Alex as his guitars came roaring back after being a bit muted on Signals. I still love this record. Check Kid Gloves and Between the Wheels. Two standouts from this album...

  • @kennethtilton6137

As another comment said, Neil wrote this after talking to Geddy's mother. She spent 6 years in different concentration camps, including the infamous Auschwitz, where she met her future husband Geddy's future father. He used to bribe guards to smuggle her things like slippers or soap, tissue, etc. That's where he writes. " I hear the sound of gunfire at thd prison gate/Are the liberators here/ Do I hope or do I fear
They reunited after both camps were liberated. Geddy's father had a sister that had immigrated to Ottawa, and she helped them immigrate to Toronto, where his mother still lives today. His father passed when Geddy was 11.

I don't know how you can be moving. I am riveted by the lyrics. World War 2 ended ten years before I was born, my parents were safe here in America. I was fully informed by my mother, whose ancestry was German, on what happened in Germany in the forties. I do hope you realize that he is singing about recent history, it doesn't seem you do. Geddy's mother made sure he knew what had happened. His father was not able to talk about it. I seriously had to move down to the replies so I could not see you grinning throughout this song. Where did the lyrical breakdown go? What happened there?

Yes, because objectivism is such a sane and reasonable philosophy to follow. Just gotta read up on our Ayn Rand and learn to be self-serving and ignore those in need.

This is a strange song for me. It is one of their most rocking songs, with one of their best riffs, so I understand why you feel a need to move, but the subject matter is so serious and dark, that it it is hard to dance or even bop your head.

I’m sorry, I usually would love your energy and happiness but not to this song. Knowing about Geedy’s parents makes this song too real, and me discussed with our past actions. But this song is a cruel reminder that we are animals. Yes, it is a great musical song and I get it, but a respectful somber should be the tone. I love that live, the lights do prison bars between the audience and the Band.
