The shoulder injury is no joke. I have a similar issue with my left shoulder. Whenever i raise it above my head, it feels the same as a jammed finger. Just a straight jolt of pain and the feeling of bone on bone when moving a certain way. My hat goes off to him for playing through that.

This "thoracic outlet syndrome" was probably starting to develop toward the end of his college career and it didn't really manifest until he got to the league. Super unlucky for him, wow.

It's really weird that he looked so fluid shooting in college and then over a single summer, it's like he got paralyzed and had to relearn how to walk or something. I think someone got into his head about his shooting form and it got stuck really deep in there. A lot of guys have weak jumpers coming out of college and start working with a coach to tighten up their form, but this is a case where it looks like it completely backfired.

@@Yungchris760 I mean, look at Lonzo Ball. His jumper was weird in college but it was effective. He got to the pros and had to change some things, now it looks quite a bit different. It happens all the time, but I really think it got way too deep into Fultz's brain and he started questioning everything.

“Voluntary” is key though.. Some respectable members in the NBA think that he actually had a BMX type biking accident in the off-season that was undisclosed and kept from the 76ers. That disrupted his shoulder and inevitably forced him to get more medical help. Don’t know if it’s true but it would help explain a lot of the confusion.

I feel badly about all the shit he got. He was really just a kid, and it seems like he had a lot of personal issues going on. He's still only 23, so his story isn't over yet. He was playing better in Orlando, so I hope he continues to grow as a player. I completely understand why he was intimidated by big market teams too.... I couldn't imagine being a young, 19 year old player, playing for one of the most passionate/intense fanbases in the league. Just thinking about that makes me nervous. It definitely humanizes him for me. Sometimes we forget that these players are humans too, with problems and anxieties just like all of us.

Kid or not the #1 pick is expected to perform, top picks are always the most criticized this is no different. Many other 1st picks handled it fine, some didn't. That's completely on Fultz

Loved to see him in that comeback arc this last season. He just had the best season of his career and what’s crazy is he’s still only 24. Everybody is acting like his career is over and he’s a bust, but he’s still got a lot of potential ahead of him.
When I was in college at U of Tenn, almost every day we would throw frisbee in our apartment parking lot. One day, on about my 5th throw, I held on to the Frisbee too long and threw it straight into the ground. Funny, right? I did it the next 9 throws and had to change my entire grip in order to get the Frisbee to go more than 10 ft. To this very day, I can't throw a Frisbee like I used to could. My grip is entirely different. No idea why, no idea what caused it, but I literally forgot how to throw a Frisbee. The mind is a fascinating thing.
Fultz had so much potential, he was an amazing talent in college. I just hope that we’ll see that same Fultz in the NBA sometime in the future.

He got diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) and it was never a case of the yips. It's a pretty serious nerve injury which caused his jumper to fail him. Landry Fields had the same diagnosis and if you compare his jumper to Fultz's they are exactly the same.
And Fields was a solid NBA role player too for a bit there.
I think it's weird to be concerned about his jump shot when he is an amazing driver. People act like if you can shoot a 3 you don't deserve to be in the league look at John Wall Ron Artest or hell Shaq. Dude's amazing on 2k for me why? Cause I don't force him to shoot. Beyond that his mid range looks great. The NBA is such a toxic paparazzi filled twitter hell nowadays. The fact that his trainer was putting up tweets all the time about his struggles is kinda messed up. He's basically milking likes by using Fultz's struggle. "No structural damage" doesn't include nerve damage. Which is likely the cause of his physical inability to shoot the ball the way he used to.
i ruined my back and got a bit of nerve damage. i cant imagine trying to perform with any sort of nerve damage at a professional level
exactly that. my wife has this exact same problem. nothing shows up in x-rays or mri's, but the description of what's going on with his arm is exactly the same. it's possible that something could be going on with his spine being out of alignment resulting in the tension that is compressing the nerves in his shoulder. it's an evil injury for anyone.

Damn this is a rough story. I played tennis for many years and some matches I would feel like I forgot how to serve. The state of mind you get in to really be in the zone is a fleeting thing. Feeling your body vs over thinking. Some days I’d be serving bombs for three straight set full of aces and every once in a while just forget and be unable to toss the ball normally or synchronize my arms and legs and double fault a few times and then once my confidence was lost it would just snowball and get worse. Shit is a horrible feeling. Can’t even imagine suffering from that with all the pressure of being a no 1 draft pick in the nba damn.
yea, his mom definitely didn't help matters at all either. but the bigger issue is he's literally suffering from nerve damage. that's what thoracic outlet syndrome is. that means his arm is literally incapable of functioning correctly anymore. not very easy to diagnose either, as it won't show up as structural damage.

It really looks like it's a mental thing. That thing with his mom really stands out. He knew he was drafted for how sweet his 3pt-shot looked and associated it with his value as an NBA player. Suddenly, he hates the fact that being in the NBA made his life suck, now he hates the thing that took him to the NBA.
It sounds like a sub-conscious thing to me. I bet if you erased the 3pt-line, he could hit long 2's from 3pt range easily.

It’s a yips injury. A loss of control in neuromuscular function in one’s extremities. Most common in Baseball and Tennis players. That’s why he keep changing his shooting form and body mechanics it’s the usual therapy for yips.
Roy Hibbert had the yips and he’s out of the league now.
"Thoracic outlet syndrome" is PERMANENT NERVE DAMAGE. He's changing forms to try to avoid the worst of the agony, but some people just aren't built to do some things, and in my opinion - just mine - these kids who were playing so much, so young, have really accelerated their own decline. The nerve damage is probably MOST painful doing exactly what basketballers DO most, like, jump shots and free throws? Have you noticed just HOW MANY Heisman Trophy winners now just... disappear? I know, football; but 2011 - RGIII wins as a junior - 2012 Johnny Manziel wins as a freshman; 2013 Jameis Winston, freshman. All of them superstars way back in HIGH SCHOOL? Superstars at 17, mentally and physically their health is ALL BURNT OUT - at the age of 25. Fultz is trying to "play through the pain" like how Real Men do - so hopefully he can at least afford a snazzy wheelchair and a real comfy coffin.

Can we take a second to note how his mother was behaving? That's some incredibly fucked up shit she was doing. She isolated him from his support people and those who might have been support people. Having your mama, the one person who's supposed to be in your corner constantly overstep, trample on your boundaries, refuse to recognise you as an adult, attack and harass the people helping you and create tension between you and a star team mate must be incredibly difficult on your mental health. Such a blow can be very damaging to a young athlete. Now I'm not saying that's the reason he got worse, but it certainly didn't help.

FACTS 💯💯 anxiety is very real from my own experience when there's a bunch of people around I start feeling very uncomfortable and my body gets tence and I start walking weird and can't control all the fidgeting that I do. Makes perfect sense as to why he chose a small college and then making the transition to the NBA gave him worse anxiety. Mental health is serious and very real

I think it was a mix of the yips and the injury. Although the yips are more common in baseball, it’s still performance anxiety. He had a lot of pressure being the first overall pick; it explains why he was really good at moving mid ranges, because he didn’t have time to think about the shot. When he was at the free throw line, all eyes are on him and it’s him, the basket and his thoughts. That’s the problem he had, a fear of failure
Definitely fear of failure because of trying to fulfill others expectations. I had similar problem as a HS catcher. There are more than likely some traumatic events in his past also.. Made me hate the game. I feel for this youngster as I am now in my mid 40's and can finally talk about it.

Bro this happened to me. I was a shoota in high school. He probably had a traumatic experience where it ruined his muscle memory. I had dislocated shoulder and a concussion when I fell from a steep steps at my job. I’m alright when I do a pick up game but I’m usually nowhere what I used to be. I’d probably shoot 10 shots and make 4 in a pick up game compared to shooting 17 shots and making 9 or 11

He's young he can still bounce back, but in basketball confidence is everything. Going to a college with no expectations where you're the guy and pretty much every shot you take good or bad is a good shot is different from being scrutinized as the number one draft pick on a team that has championship expectations.

Heard a rumor, he fell off a motorcycle after sometime between the draft and start of season, messed his shoulder up and had a hidden surgery . Which is why he entered the league with a different shooting stroke. He didn’t tell the 76ers because they could void his rookie contract for injury violating a clause in contracts
Such an odd story... anyone who's been playing ball since they were a kid will tell you that shooting is like riding a bike... it develops from habitual learned behavior into instinct. Even at 40 yrs old I can go 6 months without shooting a ball but when I do pick one up it is essentially the same shot I've had since I was 15. Definitely seems to be a combination of injury/mental, but it seems like the mental completely took over at some point.

I posted this comment elsewhere but it's fitting here: When I was in college at U of Tenn, almost every day we would throw frisbee in our apartment parking lot. One day, on about my 5th throw, I held on to the Frisbee too long and threw it straight into the ground. Funny, right? I did it the next 9 throws and had to change my entire grip in order to get the Frisbee to go more than 10 ft. To this very day, I can't throw a Frisbee like I used to could. My grip is entirely different. No idea why, no idea what caused it, but I literally forgot how to throw a Frisbee. The mind is a fascinating thing.
lol I dont know about that, I play in an adult league and if I am not shooting enough during the week my shot isnt consistent at all, but you re right I have never completely forgotten how to shoot. If I remember right Fultz had an injury to his shoulder in the summer league his rookie year. I think it jacked up his muscle memory because yeah he cannot shoot for beans now
I respectfully disagree. I used to have a great shot but my mechanics were bad, it lead to my shot getting blocked more than it should have. I tried to change my mechanics to shoot properly and while it looked way better, it just never went in. Tried to change back to my original shot and i could never get it back. Now i completely suck at shooting when i was pretty decent for years
I've had major shoulder surgery. A shoulder injury will mess you up mentally. You never know when or if you can take certain shots. Easily pulled muscles. One minute all is good, 30 secs later you can barely lift ball over your shoulder to shoot. Even on street ball level, It will mess you up mentally

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with your theory, in my opinion. Whatever the reason for a possible injury, it combined with inexperience/immaturity, high expectations from media and fanbase for this "perfect storm" of a draft bust for the Sixers. It absolutely looks like a psychological block at this point, like the arc is some insurmountable wall. You can tell from his mid range jump shots, especially from movement (when you're not 'thinking') that it's NOT a question of ability. Fultz definitely has the tools to excel when healthy so time will tell what happens in his career.
I was at that first game back for Fultz(against the nuggets). We all got exited watching him score but, you could tell there was an uneasiness in the arena.
It’s so ironic how fultz was picked over lonzo because of Lonzos odd shooting form but it was fultz that ended up with all the shooting problems mentality and physically while Lonzo completely changed his shot to become a consistent shooter

It’s almost guaranteed 1 of 2 things happened, either A. He did get injured and they just missed it, happens all the time. Or B. They tried to force him to change his shot that far into his career and it basically ruined not only his shot and form but also his confidence

It’s not a mystery. He was literally diagnosed with TOS. Which is a syndrome that causes nerve damage in the neck and shoulders. That’s y he can’t shoot. Thankfully TOS is treatable and it handled right he may be able to get his shot back

@@RedEyeItachi I think it depends on the expectations. He was drafted first overall. So the assumed expectation is that he would be borderline an all-star at this point. In that sense, I think he is labeled a “bust” because he was a 1st overall pick that has yet to be a star. It’s not meant as a slight against him as a human being (at least, I hope it’s not). I hope he finds his shot.

The best theory I’ve heard came from an ESPN radio show. Brandon Robinson reported, and apparently Markelle Fultz had a motorcycle accident and injured his shoulder. His initial contract outlined that he wasn’t supposed to doing anything that would put him at risk of injury, which included riding a motorcycle. Him and his agent had to cover it up.

he's suffering from nerve damage, which is what thoracic outlet syndrome is. that's why when he's having to rely on arm strength for a shot he just doesn't have it, because the nerves sending the signals through his shoulder are being compressed and not getting through correctly. results in muscle weakness, pain and numbness.

I feel for the guy. Had similar experience and couldn’t handle pressure back in HS. Moved from 🇩🇪 back to the states and coach was looking at me. Word spread around and had kids calling me Dirk before our first practice together. Started their weight program(never lifted before) and wasn’t shooting in the mean time. By time we started scrimmaging, I had completely lost my shot and confidence soon after. Took about a year before I got it right but coaches had lost trust in me and got cut.

It’s a sad story. He will have a fruitful career as a role player, and who knows what comes of it. However, he was a #1 draft pick overall. This means very high expectations. He did not and has not fulfilled these expectations. It’s almost easier to be the underdog and work your way up, because nobody expected you to succeed anyway.

I wonder if the increased distance really did a number on him. I’m no pro player at all but my shot feels smooth and effortless up to a certain distance. Then, it’s like I have to noticeably change my shot to increase power. Could explain his dominant mid range. Idk.. just a thought.
Just my thought also. He used to have a very high set point. That's probably the best way to shoot close to mid range but falls off the further you are. Especially from nba 3pt range

@@MathieuPilot The difference is this guy has the resources at his disposal that the rest of us cannot fathom. You know what you are talking about but you've never had a personal trainer to teach you how to shoot. He's had more than a couple of months to fix it. It's like he keeps having to start over from scratch maybe he has an attitude problem or something behind the scenes that makes him difficult to work with. Or maybe he just can't learn anything. I spent 8 years in the military and coming out of basic there was a trend that was very noticeable. The instructors had a hard time improving the mechanics of shooters who had experience before coming to the military. While the ones who had never shot in their lives usually picked up the mechanics quickly under supervision. Sure aiming down the sights and hitting a target within 30 meters is simple. Like Call of Duty. But once it gets to 300 meters it's not so simple. You can look down the sight and shoot all day and not figure it out. Maybe the rifle needs rezeroed. Maybe you have poor mechanics. Sometimes it can be as simple as learning the wrong things alone that make it very difficult to learn from someone else.
What’s crazy is the Sixers really didn’t optimize the process at all, particularly the Okafor and Fultz picks. And still were the number 1 seed in the East last year. They should be unstoppably dominant if their assets weren’t so mismanaged.
That’s easy to say now. Fultz was the consensus number 1 pick and by far the best fit for Philly.

Ben and Joel needed (and still currently do) a shot creator and Fultz was not only the consensus number one pick. He was also the best shot creator in the draft.

@Sean Jones miles bridges is not a superstar player. Even for the general NBA player 23 is young. The average nba age is over 26 years old, meaning 23 is 3 years below the average NBA players age. 23 is young in the NBA dude, no matter how you’re trying to spin it.
The 3-pt line is 3 feet further away in the pros. To me it seems clear that this would be a challenge to get used to and I'm surprised it doesn't seem to be talked about. When I played basket in high-school, I could shoot decently from 15-18 ft away (or closer). But I was horrible behind the three. The form I used didn't work and a huge part of that was strength. In college I was able to learn to shoot the three, mostly because I had to, playing intermural. Primarily, I learned to use my legs better, but I also noticed being just a little stronger went a long way. It just seems like such an obvious reason why he struggled with the 3 in the NBA. His natural shot just didn't have the strength to go the extra 3 feet consistently.
He ended up being diagnosed with TOS, which is basically really badly compressed nerves/blood vessels that affects the shoulder. It makes your arms feel numb and heavy when you raise them to a certain point, so that’s why his shot got messed up.
what tobias said. it also results in weakness in the muscles, as the nerve signals are not getting through the way their supposed to. my wife has the same injury, and it's done nothing but get worse for four years now. literally can't even touch her shoulder without pain shooting down her entire arm. a chiropractor seems to be helping some, but don't know if it'll actually fix the problem or if it'll be more of a maintenance thing.
The distance to the free throw line is the same. His jumpshot changed due to another reason, not distance.

We know why Boston didn’t pick him… Danny said that they were gonna take Tatum with the first pick anyway and said why not trade back to 3 and get more draft capital and still get the player they wanted all along. Long term they knew Tatum had better upside and it was position Boston needed more than a PG/SG since they already took Jaylen the year before. It just made sense for them to take Tatum and get draft picks on top of that.

NGL I graduated from UW 2016 and went on to the corporate life and the first time I heard of him was during the draft process. He had no buzz around the city so I was always surprised he went number 1. Tatum was always the best player

I really hope Mr. Fultz gets his shot back. That’s real shitty. He’s still a good player. I used to be able to make jump shots as a teenager. Going to basketball summer camps. However once life got in the way I stopped shooting, practicing I lost my jump shot. I tried getting it back a couple years attempting 100 3 pointers, only making 20.

As a LMT I can attest to the Neurological wall. I have some patients I'll use sports massage therapy to improve ROM(Range of Movement). Some that have had trauma from injuries, even after the muscle complex fully heals and recover, the trauma to the neurological pathway is still blocked. Often times, when the patient is ready the "mental wall" can just fall and the patient suddenly gains back full ROM.
This is also something that is taught to most body working practices that deal with kinesthesiology. Athletic trainers, Chiropractors, etc. Your Physician once learned this, although doesn't use it in the field often might forget. If you have a personal trainer, he should definitely have a background in it.

This was a dope vid !! It’s easy to tell that Fultz is a true hopper, he has a feel for the game that only the real ones have. The ability to get by guys without being insanely quick, the knack for finding his window to pull up, the deceptively explosive finishes around the rim. That stuff can’t be taught. It’s a shame that whatever happened to him happened. If he was still elevating, releasing, and knocking down that long “jimbo” like he was in college, this kid would have a WAY different story thus far. Hope all goes well for the young fella.

Simmons is a 100x bigger bust, at least you can tell Fultz actually likes the game of basketball and will be a role player for awhile.
I had never really thought about Fultz until this video and it’s really sad. At the time I had only cared about who the Lakers drafted (I was team Fox), and completely ignored Fultz. Beyond that I knew people talked about his shot. Either way though, I’m glad I watched this video. It gave me a new perspective and I truly hope for the best for him.

What's the mystery? He had TOS. I got it near the end of my college career in football and just couldn't throw anymore. Him saying 'it's like someone is holding my arms down when I shoot' is the exact feeling I got.
JJ went through something similar at the start of his career. He came in and his shots were going in and out and people were writing him off. He probably was empathetic to Fultz because of that experience.

Right after drafting Tatum, Ainge was quoted as saying he would have taken Tatum number one. Ainge was an absolutely brilliant GM and seems not to really get credit for that anymore
@@eihuevo9654 explain how? He doesn't get many high picks. When he did he has done pretty well. Smart, brown when people said it was a high reach, also Tatum who people thought was to high of a pick.
Look at all the picks the Celtics had in 2013-2014 and all they could get out of that was a very mediocre team. Now look at the nets who, lost that huge deal with the Celtics by a landslide and probably shouldn’t have recovered for another 5-10 years. look where Sean Mark brought them. And then looks at the kings who have always had there picks and still can’t create a decent team.

It was very inaccurate. Once he was diagnosed on Dec 4, 2018, everything that Markelle went through before then was very explainable. It was 100% physiological problem of a compressed nerve in the right thoracic outlet at the base of his neck. Instead Dylan chose to deny his n-TOS and suggest he was lying or had some mental condition. Most Sixers fans still don't know the truth, thanks to medically inept people like Keith Pompey. And for Markelle to go through 10 months of daily PT was remarkable. There was no mention of the Performance members spreading lies to the media. They were eventually fired. They botched the Zhaire Smith episode also.
I’m so glad he’s coming back. I’m a long time magic fan and I was in tears when he tore his ACL. It was a freak accident. He drove into to the paint like he always did but of course a clueless rookie (Okoro) had to be there to force that awkward landing. The team looked so bright. First 4-0 start ever. An all star center in Vucevic, solid support from Gordon, good defense, consecutive playoff appearances and a rising star in fultz. Everything was there. I believe he would have won MIP had he not gotten hurt. I hope and pray he can return to form and contribute to the team.
What's weird is that I can relate a bit to this. I'm not saying that I'm anywhere close to as good as him, no, not even close. I felt like whenever I played, there was a lot of pressure on me, so I played better when I didn't have to think. Shooting a jumper was my worst nightmare. It used to be the best part of my game. But now, if I try shooting, I end up rushing myself or overthinking it.

I have a pretty good reason why the Celtics traded the number one pick to avoid picking markelle fultz: team need. At the time of the draft, the Celtics had Marcus smart, terry rozier, and Isaiah Thomas (who at that point was putting up nearly 30 PPG, and they would later trade for Kyrie) on their roster, and they had just picked Jaylen brown the previous draft, so it makes perfect sense why they wouldn’t want to pick another guard. They did, however, have a glaring need for a really good small forward, so picking Tatum honestly made the most logical sense at the time. The Celtics probably didn’t see anything wrong with fultz, they just felt like they’d have too many guards if they took him.
Ainge also wanted more draft capital. He'd made that trade with the Nets that gave him a huge number of drafts picks, and he figured that since the 76ers were bound to pick Fultz, why not get some more capital out of it? He'd fallen in love with Tatum and knew this was the person he wanted. The Celtics looked at other prospects partly to be polite and partly to hide their real intentions. He simply decided to make a profit. And it was a great choice.
