  • G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are crucial signaling molecules that regulate a plethora of physiological processes by transducing extracellular signals into intracellular responses. This makes them vital for functions such as neurotransmission, hormone regulation, immune responses and sensory perception. They therefore represent key targets for therapeutic intervention in various diseases. This video explains what is known about the structure of GPCRs, how they recruit G proteins and how G proteins transduce receptor activity into downstream signals that tell a cell how to respond. Mechanisms of action and desensitisation are explained, as well as the different types of GPCR and G protein.
