And honestly I thought it was very touching that they paid so much notice to their ancestors and the nations that existed before they did. Canadians know their roots. I think that's why, as an American, I respect them so much.
I'm a Canadian through and through and am very touched by what you said - I think the combination of all these styles of artistry represent us as a nation and collective identity, but the male dancer in the step dance segment who performed right before Ashley MacIsaac (the left handed fiddle player with shredded bow) is indicative of us as a group as well because he looks like he belongs at a punk rock or grunge club but he is dancing in the traditional style...making that mesh is amazing
9 years too late, but I feel like I need to add that there isn't a single time that I've re-watched this ceremony without being brought to my knees over this tragedy. There is no consolation for the loss of a child. But just know that Canada will never forget :(
I dont know if it is just because I am from Canada, but I think this was the best opening Ceremony for any Olympic Games...I still get tears watching this
No, I'm agree this was one of the most moving opening ceremony ever ! Everything was there. Romance, nature, humour. What a great stage concept really. The whales breezing just let me speechless ! So realistic. And this teenager who was flying... and all those classic dancers.... Man, I just can watch this ceremony over and over... this was a real show... for free, to watch. Thank you Canada. The only things a less like was the canadian anthem and the olympic anthem. These should have be 2 big moments in the ceremony and they just modified it too much.
Albertville 1992 was quiet spectacular too. I think France did start a new type a opening ceremony, much more "modern" and less on the protocol way. Decouflé was really a surprising choreographer ! But I think that Vancouver was impressive, really. These images/videos on the floor with this man running, the whales breezing... what an effect !
I always tear up and the same points I had cried when it first aired on TV, like when Georgia came out and everyone stood up in respect of the fallen Olympian, and when everyone cheered for Canada. I love my home country.
43:53--When I was watching the Opening Ceremony with my dad and Georgia came in, I turned off the chandelier in the living room in honor of Georgia's fallen Olympian, Nodar Kumaritashvili. He died during a training run in the luge competition just hours prior.
Vancouver, as an Australian, you have put one the best ever Winter Olympic Games!! Incredible to see Canada top the medal tally! I hope to make it to your beautiful country! Love Canada
Man I keep coming back here every year to watch these videos when I am feeling down on Canadian Pride. Makes me cry every time I think of Vancouver 2010 :( I loved watching it at home, and seeing the whole country uniting. Heck I still remember the first gold medal won on Canadian soil. By Alexandre Billedeau (spelt his last name wrong) in men's moguls. His brothers Fredericks reaction when he won was amazing.
I remember watching this in my living room when I was 16 and feeling such a rush of patriotism when Shane Koyczan delivered We Are More, and then the swell of pride when when he declared us the 'True north, strong and free' and then the torches going up in that flame red maple leaf. Its not often we as Canadians get patriotic, but that performance just makes me so damn proud of my country and its gentle strength.
Who’s watching this after Pyeong Chang opening ceremonies. I have to say Vancouver 2010 really displayed the spirit of its nation. Go Canada Go! Now and 4 ever.
I'm so glad this is here on youtube because I love rewatching these opening and closing ceremonies. I was born in Vancouver and lived in B.C my whole life so living back in Metro Vancouver circa 2010 Winter Games was definitely a highlight of my life.!!!! Thank you!!!
K.D Lang's performance of hallelujah brings me to tears every single time. The moment when all the animated golden candle lights turn into birds I get goosebumps all over my body! Amazing!
AMEN . . . that song has been covered by so many singers it's ridiculous, but she OWNS it (and I think Mr. Cohen agrees)! She's the one on my playlist . . .
yeah its cool, but just to note they did do something similar in Montreal 76 Calgary 88 as well as Sydney and Salt Lake (the Circassians pushed for something at the Sochi games but we all know that didn't go over too well w Vladamir poopin running the show lol) however if i remember correctly most Australian Aboriginals weren't too happy with the Sydney segment
Vancouver 2030 needs to happen, our beautiful beautiful country is so torn apart and divided geopolitically and by matters of opinion right now. The Olympics in 2010 really brought us all together as a nation and we need it more than ever now
Regrettably, as much the local government of BC as the federal government dismissed the proposal of hosting the 2030 Winter olympics in Vancouver. I supposed it was due to financial issues.
As much as I wish for that too, I honestly think one Olympics in Vancouver is good enough for now. Financially, things are much different than what it used to be, not just in Vancouver, but for Canada too. And culturally, I think another Olympics would be too soon so we should wait a little longer before Canada can host again, because in my view, Vancouver 2010 was once in a lifetime And the memories there are too irreplaceable ro replicate.
@Paddock Lockersby the fact is that it could be either for financial issues or even because of the local people will. That kind of games are hosted, and the local gvmt doesn't consider their people's opinions, and they think the organization of such games is really expensive and implies high amounts of money and consequently a high tax charges.
On behalf of my fellow Americans, I give my condolences (although belated) to the Georgian team and their fallen luger. It breaks my heart. I wish my team wore the black arm bands.
Honestly, to me there isn't one opening ceremony that's better than the other. Each one is meant to represent its country, its culture, its people... not to beat the previous olympics. I watch it because I feel that people taking part in it look so proud, it's purely magical to witness something so special. I don't understand why everyone is arguing about who made the best one, like I get it, Sochi was amazing, Beijing was amazing... but get over it, it's done, they were all amazing and there will be amazing ceremonies in the future also. Can't you just sit down and appreciate? I don't go around clicking on every damn opening ceremony to bash on other countries. That's so annoying.
The Georgia entrance was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. The fact that they showed up was truly inspiring, but what should have been such an exciting moment ended up being a horrible moment. I assume the older man at the back of their group was the man's coach, he broke my heart.
you know , after 12 months and 364, usually, a year pass. then, after that, another, then another, then you need to add one day, then another, then another, then another and a last one and here we are. its pretty simple actually
All opening ceremonies i saw were gorgeous, each in its own, and to compare them incorrectly. Each country puts in this piece of their culture and history, and rightly so.
Lived in Calgary during the '88 Winter Games and it was the best time ever. Everyone should experience an Olympic Games in their life. Loved K.D. Lang. Makes me so proud to be a Canadian. Yes we have our problems but this is still the best country in the world. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Who knew a decade from this moment that we’d be in the predicament we are in now? It’s nice to have these videos up and running, brings back fond memories and a small hope that one day I’ll actually be able to attend on of these events in the flesh, not watching from behind a screen. That being said, the best memory I have of these Olympics was the Men’s Gold Medal Hockey game. My entire grade 6 class was watching that on the Smartboard that the teacher put on while we worked, and I remember after transitioning to my Social teacher’s classroom about 15-30mins in, I heard the most uplifting, joyous shriek I have ever heard from a group of people from my other classroom as Canada scored the overtime goal. Pure bliss I tell you. What I would do to relive that momentous occasion for my young self.
@@strike1977 Awesome! It was an Australian that designed and coordinated the opening ceremonies. His challenge was to bring what Canadians value -their culture, people and the natural beauty of the country - and somehow bring it all together under one roof in a stadium. Right from the very beginning, he nailed it! As an Australian, you can be very proud of the success of this as well! 🇦🇺💞🇨🇦
Oh my God K.D. Lang. Absolutely, unequivocally spectacular in every possible way. There are very few things in the world that you could call perfection and that performance was one of them. Wow, wow, wow a billion times over. That is magic personified right there.
If there's one thing Canada really missed out on in these Olympics it was fitting in a better tribute to Terry Fox. I'd say very, very few people truly have the Olympic spirit as he did.
It just seems like every Olympic opening Ceremony is just flat out amazing they tell history and cultures in many ways like the Drums from the Chinese ceremony, the Violins and the Icebergs breaking apart in this Ceremony, the Industrial Revolution in the the 2012 Olympics and of course the Soviet Union history of Russia. I personally cannot wait for the Brazilian and the South Korean Olympics.
Ryan Sullivan It was written in one of the Harry Potter books "We can't help showing off when we get together". Having the Honor to be the Host Nation gives the right to give all the Visitors an introduction to the Best their nation has to offer. Who can Blame them? :)
don't forget Tokio 2020!!! I love the London 2012 Industrial Revolution part and the Sochi 2014 mascots showing!!! (i'm cried when the bear blows out the olimpic flame and the closing ceremony ending...SOCHI 2014)
2010...what a year! Proudest moment as a Canadian and by far the best Opening Ceremony in Olympics history in Winter games at least. The first time an opening and closing ceremony in a Winter games that was held Indoor. The first time the host country won the most number of golds on it's own soil! When Canadians are still united...from east to west everyone went out, made noise and waved the Canadian Flag when Sydney Crosby scored that golden goal in an Overtime game against the US!!! That was ecstatic! Now it is east vs. west...sorry to say!!!
Дорогой Jayden, не забывайте про олимпиаду 2014 в России (Сочи). Россияне тоже выиграли в тот год рекордное количество медалей. И открытие было не менее прекрасным🙂
That k.d. lang sequence is absolutely beautiful! All the Chinese pyrotechnics and Russian engineering is beautiful, but this is more in keeping with the spirit of the Olympics.

@@TheRealColt45 She DEFINITELY raised Leonard Cohen's profile (outside Canada) when she took on this song. She has one of those unique, instantly recognizable voices. It's funny that this popped up now - I had to show my parents how to stream their church's Easter service (online bc of CV), and someone sang that churchy rewrite of this song. I love my Country(Canada), i would do anything for Canada, born in Vancouver. I love my city. I was downtown everyday the olympics were on. Was the best days of my life.
Yeah, you love it so much that you ruin it when you lose a hockey game. I am talking about the Vancouver riots a few years back because you LOST a hockey game. I am from Australia and we would never ruin our precious city because of poor sportsmanship. What a disgrace of a city.
LITTLE RIOT????? You trashed your own freaking city!!! Just put "Vancouver Riots" into the search box. You will see hours and hours and hours of footage. Why you ask?? Because you lost a hockey game to America. Bwahahahaha PATHETIC mates! What an embarrassment to your whole country that was.
Me too! I was also born in Vancouver, but was I was living in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast during the Olympics so I couldn't be downtown. Just watching it again now, I'm remarried and living in San Francisco... Seeing it this time (and through the eyes of my American husband), I am even more proud of my Vancouver, my Canada, and my fellow Canadians!

Even though I'm Canadian I might be little biased :P I for sure like these Ceremonies much better than London and Sochi. I just feel like ours really represented well Canada's past and present, it showed our cultures our traditions and the simple beauty that is our country..... yes alot of people say that they looked cheap or tacky but I think that we didn't need all the fancy gimmicks to put on a spectacular show... we are a simple, beautiful, exquisite country and we have nothing to prove. We had elements that touched people not just from Canada but I think from all over the world who watched them. At the end of the say I don't think it should be about the money, the lights or anything else but rather showcasing the pride of a nation and it's culture and beauty which I think these ceremonies did. Absolutely no disrespect to Sochi and London, they were very well done as well, but this is just my opinion. I found London's were a little bland and Sochi's were a little strange and I didn't understand what they were trying to represent sometimes... but both were beautiful and grand as ceremonies should be.... Respect to all these countries.... It's not easy hosting the Olympics :)
As a Canadian, I personally like Sochi and London’s ceremonies more. However, I completely agree with what you said about us not needing all the grandeur’s to represent who we are, proud of this ceremony (despite the cauldron disaster) and proud of my country!
hahaha i'm 18 yrs old and i'm binge watching all these opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics games.... its just so heartwarming to see nations uniting as one
+aida-maria getz They have plenty of funding. What they need is more appreciation for their culture and history. They also need far less discrimination from many Canadians. I think the First Nations culture is fascinating and should be part of all sort of national ceremonies. For example, whenever we sing the national anthem, we should also sing a First Nations song (likely one from your local tribe) or do a dance. Much like in this video.
This was my 2nd time watching the opening ceremony for Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics since watching it for the first time live... and it gave me the chills once again especially the beginning when the camera goes over Stanley park and then the aboriginals culture segment!!!! One of the most powerful moments of my life, and an absolutely incredible time to be in Vancouver. It was just amazing to see the whole city united in support of our athletes, and to feel the tremendous pride and palpable sense of jubilation that flowed through the city. Two weeks where you couldn't help but feel honored to be Canadian.
I love how they paid their respects to the First Nations... After everything we've done to them they deserve to be a part of it and it was really well done my favourite opening ceremony to date
Did you know that they built this stadium on the first nations land? Then they invited them to take part in the ceremony and only some nations came, the others were protesting at the time. I learnt this within the past year and was shocked!
Aside from one malfunction, Vancouver had an amazing Olympics. Beautiful for the tourists, the journalists and the athletes. Really, what future Olympics should hope to accomplish. Sadly, at least so far according to reports, Sochi is woefully unprepared.
I do know that Vancouver looks like the 2010 Olympics all year round. These grandeur styled Olympics that 2010 architected are definitely what every athlete should experience and get nostalgia from when they look back and reminisce over how they made it to the Olympics!
I remember watching this with my family when I was 15, I remember going down to Vancouver (I don't live too far away) and seeing people from all over the world joining together despite our differences to enjoy such a wonderful experience and feeling such a massive amount of pride and patriotism for my country when we would win another medal. I will never forget the feeling the Vancouver Olympics gave me and I cannot explain how happy I am that I was old enough to fully appreciate everything the Olympics offered.
Nostalgia >~< The most fun olympics I’ve seen(probably because it’s in my hometown so as a kid I got a lot of souvenirs and got to go to the olympic oval during the skating events) but watching the olympics was extremely fun that year

We still have a long way to go mate but, so far was a great achievement and a big step towards reconciliation.
You are awesome!
Respect for Georgia for coming out after that tragic accident before the ceremony
Can you tell me what happened?
Dani Garcia Right before the opening ceremony, a Georgian luger died from a luging accident on the Olympic luging track.
Oh... Thats very sad thank you for telling me may he rest in peace...

I dont know if it is just because I am from Canada, but I think this was the best opening Ceremony for any Olympic Games...I still get tears watching this
I live in Canada to and watching this make me so nostalgic its crazy. Its still by far my favorite Olympic opening ceremony
I think the same too and I'm not canadian ahah you had really made something that should be an example for every olympics
You should go watch the 2004 opening ceremony . Greece's opening ceremony was the most beautiful of all.
"The True North, Strong and Free" puts me in tears every time, and I don't even understand why. Chills and tears, honestly.
The opening part with all of my people dancing makes me cry every time.
b
I cried pretty hard.
me tooo!!
My teacher was in the Irish dancing 👀
Just watching it on the 10th anniversary and it still makes me cry when I see the first nations coming out. Proud Metis boy here.
Remember when we were all allowed in stadiums together like this... feels like it was 10 years ago even tho it hasn’t even been a year 😞
I always tear up and the same points I had cried when it first aired on TV, like when Georgia came out and everyone stood up in respect of the fallen Olympian, and when everyone cheered for Canada.
Love Canada
Now it is Rio 2016 and when I look back to the Vancouver Olympics, I still get goose bumps.
Yes!!
I completely agree with you
Man I keep coming back here every year to watch these videos when I am feeling down on Canadian Pride.
I agree except this happens to me with every olympic games I watch
Me too
I remember watching this in my living room when I was 16 and feeling such a rush of patriotism when Shane Koyczan delivered We Are More, and then the swell of pride when when he declared us the 'True north, strong and free' and then the torches going up in that flame red maple leaf. Its not often we as Canadians get patriotic, but that performance just makes me so damn proud of my country and its gentle strength.
When does it happen?
jax enz 2:15:35
thetrashtube i was 16 too! got to hold the olympic torch a week before the ceremonies and made me so patriotic lol
What an amazing time this was, hard to believe it's already been 11 years.
Who’s watching this after Pyeong Chang opening ceremonies. I have to say Vancouver 2010 really displayed the spirit of its nation. Go Canada Go! Now and 4 ever.

I think Pyeong Chang ceremony is the best!^^

She's the one on my playlist . . .
That is magic not of this Earth. So. Fucking. Amazing!
So agree, the Joni song was special too, but KD was so emotional, even 11 years later.
I've come back to this video numerous times to listen to her rendition. Smooth as silk. Her version is unparalleled, imo. Heavenly!
12 years later that performance still give be goosebumps

Proudest 2 weeks of my life as a Canadian and a Vancouverite
I love that they included the Canadian aboriginals. And the music was incredible!
That's the part that I really liked and honestly...it touched me
yeah its cool, but just to note they did do something similar in Montreal 76 Calgary 88 as well as Sydney and Salt Lake (the Circassians pushed for something at the Sochi games but we all know that didn't go over too well w Vladamir poopin running the show lol) however if i remember correctly most Australian Aboriginals weren't too happy with the Sydney segment
Nice post:-)

And culturally, I think another Olympics would be too soon so we should wait a little longer before Canada can host again, because in my view, Vancouver 2010 was once in a lifetime
And the memories there are too irreplaceable ro replicate.
@Paddock Lockersby the fact is that it could be either for financial issues or even because of the local people will. That kind of games are hosted, and the local gvmt doesn't consider their people's opinions, and they think the organization of such games is really expensive and implies high amounts of money and consequently a high tax charges.
2030? We have our bid for Canberra 2030
❤
That's so annoying.
mh09 look up Rio’s opening ceremony. And in the comment section, Others were bashing it and it was damn annoying.
I must've watched the part with all the First Nations people about a thousand times. I just love how Canada included them in their opening ceremony
Jonny Setzler it was annoying. We are not a country who beats drums and does weird dances. We are Canada

Great Opening Ceremony. Respect from the UK.
Centrist Philosopher and from Australia 😉
@@strike1977 Awesome! It was an Australian that designed and coordinated the opening ceremonies. His challenge was to bring what Canadians value -their culture, people and the natural beauty of the country - and somehow bring it all together under one roof in a stadium. Right from the very beginning, he nailed it! As an Australian, you can be very proud of the success of this as well! 🇦🇺💞🇨🇦
I love it how a few countries waved the Canadian flag instead of their own. Some waved both (like china). That's how you know countries respect you
Oh my God K.D.

By far the best opening ceremony in my opinion!! I especially love the part with the boy floating over the field.

Still one of the best olympics games opening ceremony for me.
The show was really amazing, everything was awesome.
Same here

2010...what a year! Proudest moment as a Canadian and by far the best Opening Ceremony in Olympics history in Winter games at least. The first time an opening and closing ceremony in a Winter games that was held Indoor. The first time the host country won the most number of golds on it's own soil! When Canadians are still united...from east to west everyone went out, made noise and waved the Canadian Flag when Sydney Crosby scored that golden goal in an Overtime game against the US!!! This ceremony was beautiful
As a Canadian, hearing that girl sing O Canada, I had a tear in my eye. No Canadian has ever heard a version of our anthem so awesome.
😮
Beijing and London were spectacular, but Vancouver had grace and soul
Calgary was without a doubt one of the worst Olympics ever hosted in Canada. Vancouver restored the winter Olympic legacy in Canada!
As a Canadian, I personally like Sochi and London’s ceremonies more. However, I completely agree with what you said about us not needing all the grandeur’s to represent who we are, proud of this ceremony (despite the cauldron disaster) and proud of my country!
Also we didn’t go like 5 times over budget like sochi
hahaha i'm 18 yrs old and i'm binge watching all these opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics games.... its just so heartwarming to see nations uniting as one
The First Nations are such a big part of our Canadian culture. The government should add them to the budget, and pay more attention to them.
The first nations people actually own ALL of the land in Vancouver. It was never taken away from the first nations legally through treaties.
@ryan m they own the souls of the dead that fall on this land...
Aside from one malfunction, Vancouver had an amazing Olympics. Beautiful for the tourists, the journalists and the athletes. Really, what future Olympics should hope to accomplish. Sadly, at least so far according to reports, Sochi is woefully unprepared.

this is truly the best and the most beautiful and well done show I have ever seen in my life. The projection mapping is fantastically genius, as a projection mapping performer and creator I can say that this is the ultimate top for the use of the art of Projection Mapping.
