I played one of the nurses in the ceremony and there was a rehearsal where we were able to watch that sequence. That moment made me cry, as incredible as it was on tv, it was exponentially more incredible to see it live.

I watch it a couple times a year. But here in April 2024 the UK seems so different to that time. We weren't so fractured then. I held a house party with my friends and my housemate friends we didn't all know each other but we had a great time watching. Nostalgia I suppose.

As a Brit my self I think the start is bloody fantastic -
then it’s a thanks to the NHS which is great! but I don’t know I guess a flex to other countries 🤷😅 -
then it’s 20 minutes of twats dancing to bops through the generations -
another flex about the World Wide Web which is a totally different thing to the internet 🛜 -
then some actual artsy dance stuff but in a massive arena it’s kinda like meh? -
twats on bikes representing the doves 🕊️ you can’t use real doves anyone because in the 1988 Olympics the torch burned real doves (actually kinda funny) I would be embarrassed to be a bike dove -
The Olympic torch looking back is a banging idea 💡 all the petals from all the countries coming to make the torch ahhh that’s bloody lovely 🥰 -
Well how do we end a show? can’t go wrong with the beetles I guess so 🤷‍♀️ get him to play hey Jude. Don’t know what that has the do with the Olympics but again another FLEX!!! Whyyyyyy!!!
As an Olympic nerd it’s definitely top 5 of all time just for the start when they forge the rings is amazing but then they drop the ball and just start flexing STOP that’s all cringe 😂

I'm an American and I remember watching this for the first time and realizing, to my shock, how much of what I grew up with and loved and assumed was American pop culture ... was actually British. Well done, UK. You really reminded us how deeply you've impacted our lives. Also, I don't think I've ever seen anything so simultaneously dreadful and inspiring as the Pandemonium sequence. The golden Olympic ring out of all that smoke and chaos. I thought it was very brave of Britain to acknowledge both the good and the bad that came out of industrialization, and very hopeful to have all that result in a symbol of unity for all humanity.

English teacher from America here. This is what I constantly try to tell my kids, all the time, when they ask why we study British literature in America. Because the Brits INVENTED English. They developed it from a mere language to one of the most beautiful and universal modes of expression through the development of an incredible culture. America is full of Dutch, Irish, German, Spanish, African, Japanese, and Middle Eastern Immigrants. But we all speak English, and the Brits are the masters of it.

This brings tears to my eyes 10 years on. Caliban, Brunell, the NHS, Dizzy Rascal, Olympics in East London and Danny Boyle in charge of that. Choreography, costumes, lighting, sound, everything on point. The Queen not telling her family she was involved. That's class. I was so proud then and still am of that moment (thank you Radio 4 for The Reunion) but...I won't spoil it.

As an English woman, born in 1954, it was the pastoral scenes before the "Industrial" takeover that make me the most emotional. I remember as a small child the gorgeous countryside and the fields of wildflowers. Picking apples and maypole dancing were scenes of great happiness added to the sound of cricket played on the green.
My Father once told me on the train to London that we were going through the "Black Country" and I shivered at the thought.
This Opening Ceremony struck a huge chord of reminiscence in my generation's Heart.

Wake up please, whites are a global minority and if things don't change we will be erased from our own native land.
I'm not a racist person, anyone who decides to defend western values and Britain no matter race I consider a friend, but a mass immigration policy is changing Britain's unique traditions, culture and demographics into other countries. How is that fair? Especially when certain groups have a vested interest in destroying said western culture.
When you have multiple distinctive immigration groups in a nation, each group tries to drag the host nation to their own historical nation of ancestry. Endlessly changing, erasing, protesting, destroying and banning host nation ideals and values where you end up with a place no different to other areas of the world. So again people see the Quit India Movement as a noble quest, when in reality it was a racist anti-british violent protest, but when Brits start complaining about legitimate attacks on their own culture and demographics it's "racist" to state facts.

@@isengard1500you know the really tragic thing? Immigration got so much worse after Brexit.
I’m brown and Muslim, my grandparents are south Asian, my grandfather came to this country from India in the sixties to work on the railways. He also read the Financial Times every day (he was very disciplined about educating himself), wore a flat cap everywhere, made an amazing roast every Sunday, and always dressed smartly in tweed suits. He was a working class railway worker in the north and he raised his son to be an NHS doctor and his daughter to be a lawyer even though he never had the chance to get an education of his own.
I’m proud of my family. I’m proud of where my grandparents are from. I’m proud of my heritage and my roots but I’m also proud to be British.
And that’s why it pisses me off so much to see people treat this country so badly, to see children throw away their parents’ sacrifices and enter lives of crime, and to know that due to the actions of others and general racism I’ll be stuck having to defend myself from white British people who mistakenly, but somewhat understandably, associate me with my immigrant background and brown skin with the decline of this country.
Ultimately though it’s the fault of the elite who have sold this country off and abandoned the people for their own financial gain. Including with Brexit, which they did for their own purposes of tax avoidance and easier migrant labour. And I will never ever forgive them for that.

I am not British, but came here for a palate cleanser after the disaster that was the Paris opening.
Haven’t seen this in 12 years, but what a joy to be reminded of what a classy and innovative ceremony looked like, a culture that still pays respect to its heritage and roots, and yet also tastefully showcasing diversity as a strength in the modern era. The industrial revolution piece was amazing. I felt emotional watching it as through the storytelling I can sense the bittersweetness of the country’s technological progress- the green hills being replaced by the industrial revolution, the visionaries of the future represented by Brunel, and the sooty, grimy faces representing the hardship and struggles of the average citizens who built the country. The forging of the Olympics rings in the fires of industry and them coming together was a masterpiece. The universal values that build a country which are also very apt for the Olympics were on display- determination & perseverance through hardship, innovation, unity… nothing of this was found in the Paris opening.
I was looking forward to the Paris opening, but I was very disappointed. Having to rely on shock value to distract from the disjointed mess and mediocre planning shows how talentless the director is, truly shocking as France is reputed to be a country of class and the arts. He made it all about himself rather than thinking about how the universal values of the Olympic spirit could be embodied in the ceremony.

England and London especially has been through so much. When I read English authors one thing that struck me was the recurring theme of war and loss. As a US American, I have no experience of that (9/11 being over 1000 miles away). It's wonderful to see British people unite and collaborate on something creative and positive, although having to overcome adversity by working together gave them the experience needed to create this masterpiece.
