    This is not a ceremony. This is ART at its best form. I still get chills especially in the lighting of the flame. The way the cauldron essentially bows down to accept the flame, meaning that technology is and should be used only on serving humanity ... speechless

      If you say the worldwide live broadcast one, yes. There were multiple attempt of HD broadcast before this, but mostly done locally, like in EBU board member and Japan. For the international one, it was prerecorded over and over for test purpose.

    I was participated, as volunteer, in this dream! i was in Clepsydra (Classical period). At 28:03, i am the statue who walk forward, down the Parthenon. Never forget this! I was so emotional, almost was crying during presentation...

Δεν έχει σημασία που ήταν για λίγα δευτερόλεπτα τηλεοπτικού χρόνου. Όλοι είστε κομμάτια αυτής της παρουσίασης που πέρασε στην ιστορία. Όποτε το βλέπω δακρύζω και ας το έχω δει δεκάδες φορές.     I remember when i was 9 years old in Paros in our restorant, and my grandfather was watching the 2004 Opening Ceremony from a large TV with his family, Tourist and close friends from all around the world... i clearly remember when heard the "OLYMPIC GAMES WELCOME BACK TO YOUR HOME, WELCOME BACK TO GREECE!!!" my Grandfather shed in tears for the first time in front of my eyes..... that's a memory that i will remember until i die...

    By far, the best opening ceremony to present day. Athens 2004! Amazing performance, soothing music, not overly done while at the same time, was able to "wow" the world. Not even Beijing with all it's fancy drones and projections can't top Athens 2004. And that's saying a lot!

    My grandfather died one day before the opening ceremony (12/8/2004). One of the last things he said to my grandmother was: "I am not worried much, I am just so sad that I will not manage to watch the Olympics in my own country".
    He wasn't sad to leave her (XD), he was sad he wouldn't be able to connect with his fellow Greeks during the games. That's how big of a deal this event was back home.

      No other country could stage an unforgettable, unmatched, and unbeatable Opening Ceremony than its Original Birth Country in Greece. The artistic section reminded us that Greece gave birth to human knowledge such as Math, Sciences, Sculpture, and the beauty of the human body.
      This should had been Athens 1996 instead of Atlanta 1996, which is totally forgettable despite being the Centennial Games.
      Hope that when the Games reached its every 100th Year Anniversary, it should return to Greece like 2096, 2196, 2296, ..........

      We can tell you, even big "strong" men like me, could any moment burst in tears seeing your glorious past unfolding. When Alexander the Great or goddesses like Athens and Nike (victoria in latin ) appeared for instance. Particulalry except big concepts like Democracy and Sciences, how we glorify our women and didn't suppress them like others do even today.

      In 30:36 it's not Otto(the first king of the Kingdom of Greece) but rather the Oplarchigi (armed leaders), instrumental individuals in the Greek Revolution of 1821. The one with the ancient-like helmet is Theodoros Kolokotronis, the most iconic figure amongst them.

    Without a doubt, the best opening Olympic Games ceremonies ever staged. The historical detail and thought of the show is stunning, and warm outpouring of the Greeks, as always is just wonderful. The lighting of the torch is a showstopper and not to be missed.

    I participated in this ceremony. I was in Greece for 5 months. It was a life changing experience. So proud as a Greek Australian to be part of this historical event. They did an amazing job!

      Por esta ceremonia me aprendí los nombres de los países en griego 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 y de hecho en donde está mi casa las calles tienen nombre de países y los repaso en cada nombre que tienen. Mi calle se llama San Pedro Sula y en griego es Agios Petros Soula.

    I've watched almost every available footage of the Olympic Games (summer and winter) opening ceremonies since 1992, and Athens 2004 has been, by a mile, the most artistic, most elegant, most refined, and classiest opening ceremony so far.       Barcelona was the best, London 2012 was amazing to see british humor and listen good music, Beijing 2008 was interesting to see asian culture. Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Rio 2016 were classical. Atlanta was horrible.

      In the 1908 Olympics, the actual Olympic swimming and diving pool was in the middle of the stadium. I don't think that arrangement was ever used again though: maybe they got fed up of having to send freedivers in to retrieve stray javelins.

      These 10 minutes were meant to be 10 minutes of fascinating, beautiful television. But did you know that, after the pregnant woman stepped down to the floor at the end, all performers stopped and the procession lighting was turned off, so most paying spectators in the stadium saw the procession only on television?

      @@yogadgsix China has the current writing system with the longest traceable history, but the long-abandoned writing systems of Egypt and Mesopotamia are much older. The Phoenician consonant writing system from which Greek and Latin scripts derive is younger than Chinese (except that it uses symbols borrowed from a very ancient picture-based system)

    Τhis must be the only opening ceremony where the parade of the athletes of the world was the most fun to watch and hear and the one that NOBODY got bored, not for one minute! People were dancing on their seats, the athletes were dancing at their waiting spots and all those watching from their houses pumped up the volume and they had a techno party by the great Dj TIESTO!!! Greece rocked the world.

    I had never seen this opening of Athens 2004, and this is really pure art, seeing the entire history of Greece with its sculptures moving and waving, it is truly amazing, the origin of all Western culture. We must never forget history.

    The most awaited broadcast. In my opinion, this has been the most beautiful, sublime and classic Olympic opening ceremony of all time. Only the Greeks had a wonderful time covering the field with water representing the Aegean Sea. Illuminate with fire the five Olympic rings in allusion to knowledge and creative awakening of man and unfold a huge Cycladic head in the middle of the water as a representation of the universal art of this ancient culture. In addition to retaining the label of the most expensive ceremony in history. Unofficial data mention that the production of the event by Dimitris Papaioannou cost a whopping $ 110 million. Those closest to that figure were those in Sochi and Beijing.

      TBF, Salt Lake City did the Olympic Rings as flames emerging from the stadium surface (frozen rather than liquid water of course, for a Winter Olympics) just a couple of years earlier!

I do not know if the producer of the Athens 2004 opening took it as a reference, (I do not doubt it was), however, for all the historical context that Greece has the fact that the main elements of the show have been water, fire and earth, with the unifying line of the nature of the human being, made this opening ceremony a majestic and incomparable event.

    I was there! Volunteer: NOC assistant to the Maldives. I was emotional, tears flowing non-stop, then and I get even more emotional watching it now. Proud to be Greek!

    Even if London 2012 and Beijing 2008 were great ceremonies, that show was the greatest ceremony of all times. Thanks to those Olympic Games i fell in love with Greece and his beautiful history. Athens 2004 were incredible Olympic Games.

      That said, it's clear that Athens were trying a legitimate artistic response to Sydney, which had in turn been responding to Atlanta 1996 in terms of scale and popular showmanship. Beijing 2008 returned to large scale (following complaints from spectators in the Athens stadium that performances by two playful lovers, one pregnant woman etc., were almost invisible from the upper rows of seating) but maintained the Athens approach of artistic beauty and ambition.

    I had the privilege of being there in the stadium that night. It was an experience I shall never forget!
    All of us felt that we were citizens of the world - all gathered to celebrate the glory of humanity through universal sport!
    This was in my opinion the best Olympic Opening Ceremony ever. Thank you Athens for this incredible experience!

      @@Thessaloz That literally depends on your point-of-view! If you were sitting in the stadium, a short distance clockwise from the entrance where the Clepsydra parade entered, you basically spent 10 minutes waiting for it to arrive.
      And then they turned the lights out so they could show the DNA spiral.
