    Okay, so I found out how Luck actually effects generated structure loot not too long ago. It is not supposed to give you better loot. Instead, when loot is generated each item is added based on a "roll" (the game randomly chooses an item based on an items weight or probability of being given). However, not every chest gives the same number of unique items. Some generated structure chests have a chance of giving you more items through a bonus "roll"; however you are not guaranteed it. What the Luck effect does is it increases your chance of getting that bonus "roll" based on your level of Luck.

      But shouldn't "bonus_rolls" be specified in the loot table for this to work? You can check, but I don't think any of the vanilla loot tables specify the "bonus_rolls" parameter.
      Also, you can specify the "quality" of loot table entries. If you do so, the higher your luck is, the more you are likely to get higher quality items. This is used for fishing loot.

    I think, if luck is ever fully implemented in the game, it would only effect non-tool rng (loot from chests, Villager trades, etc). Minecraft doesn’t really like certain things interfering with each other, whether it’s due to balancing or other reasons, so having it effect the rng that isn’t already able to be tampered with would go with that theme

    As someone who's worked with loot tables, I can shed some light on this. In order for luck to affect loot table chances, you have to specifically configure the loot table with "quality" or "bonus_rolls" attributes. Most loot tables have bonus_rolls set to 0 so no matter your luck amount you won't get extra rolls, and the fishing loot tables are the only ones which use the quality attribute. I think luck modifiers are largely unimplemented because Mojang is hesitant to make Luck obtainable in gameplay, it could give players a fear of missing out if they open a chest without the Luck effect active. But on the other hand, it would make grindy activities like hunting wither skulls and tridents less of a chore if you could chug down a luck potion beforehand.

    • @celebrim1
      @celebrim1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The thing is, we already have Fortune and Looting for things like that. I think the problem here is psychology. Even though resources are infinite, I do the minimal amount of mining possible before obtaining a Fortune III pickax. In fact, my whole early game is basically a rush to obtain Fortune III on a pickax, and I don't think I'm alone in that. Only then do I feel like I'm not wasting ores when I mine them, even though there are more ores out there than I'll ever use. If Luck effected loot, my guess is a lot of players would feel Luck was a necessity when playing.

  • @just-give-me-a-handle

    theory: the reason why luck doesn't work is due to the value of the luck (possibly) being "modded" (put through the modulo function, i.e. (integer1 mod integer2) returns the value of the remainder of (integer1 / integer2)), which is why maybe luck 255 is treated as not much higher or maybe even equal to luck 0 (e.g. 255 mod 5 returns 0).
    where did i get this theory from? you see, according to the wiki, the value of poison is modded by 32, so perhaps it isn't the only status effect that uses the modulo function.

    FYI Luck only works to +2 without data packs. Much like certain enchants, using commands to give a level higher than programmed negates the effect 😉. I suggest you give yourself Luck 1 or 2 and retest. The effect is quite obvious. You can actually add luck to armor pieces to get this effect permanently.

    The reason why luck only affects fishing is because the loot tables in the game files of the fishing have a quality modifier, which increases (or decreases) the weight for that item to drop , weight is basically the chance for an item to drop, if I were to create a loot table, with a stick with a weight of 9 and a diamond with a weight of 1 the chances would be 90% stick and 10% diamond (the formula is chance = weight / sum) only the fishing loot tables have a quality modifier, while every other loot table doesn't, this is the same on Minecraft bedrock, where the luck effect got completely removed, the way quality works is weight = weight + (quality * generic.luck) and when quality is not defined the default value is 0. In Minecraft bedrock you can create addons in which you can create loot tables, and in the documentation there is the quality modifier which gets used with luck, and as i said that effect got completely removed from bedrock... I think they might add this effect again and make it usable in survival mode in a later version.

    Moderately long wall of text coming up. Handle with care
    Maybe Luck can work as a multiplier depending on the situation.
    If you have luck only, the calculation would be as follows: 1.1x loot from mobs, 1.075x from mining, 1.1x for chests (more on that l8r) and 1.15x from fishing, give or take.
    But, if you had any other effect that adds up to the resource gathering, the multiplier would be (luck multiplier - (enchantment level / 100) or something along the lines.
    Chests, on the other hand, would have to be adjusted for each. Maybe some chests don't even benefit from Luck (maybe Treasure Bastion's treasure), or some others get a huge (~1.75x) multiplier (dungeons, mineshafts).
    Or, they can be handled like they do at the moment: you roll your chances from the loot table, and for every luck level you get a number of chances to spin another time (determined by the table).
    As for the crafting, maybe have some rare item that drops randomly from only one mob (can't think of one rn, maybe totem of undying but that's too expensive (?)) and have it brew on the brewing stand.
    why am I writing this no one will ever see it ._.

    My most plausible guess is that the potion is there for mapmakers. Any mapmaker can add a "quality" tag to their loot tables (which will cause Luck to affect the table contents), and it might be useful for such an effect to exist when rolling loot.

  • @sgt_lil_monster1835

  • @yetakarasu4094
    @yetakarasu4094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The way luck works technically is that it affects certain optional parts of loot tables called quality and bonus rolls which as far as i know vanilla loot tables never used except for fishing.
    Bonus rolls are how many extra items it should add and are then multiplied by your luck level.
    For example, Bonus rolls = 1 and you have luck 2, You would get 2 extra items.
    Quality is also affected by luck however it is far more complicated since it changes how often an item is pulled using a formula.
    For a simple example, Quality = 2 and luck 2, it will become 4 times as likely for you to pick that item.
    Since most vanilla loottables dont have bonus rolls nor quality, luck is useless for vanilla and only useful for data packs and maps.

    Gonna defend the wiki and say it isn't wrong like you claim. The overview is perhaps wrong considering it only mentions "generated structures" (which I wouldn't say fishing is), but the Effect section very much states that Luck gives you better drops based on their Quality score, and that fishing is the only loot table to use this Quality score. Luck works, it's just not implemented into the loot tables you tried.

  • @lasercraft32
    @lasercraft32 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Actually, Luck _does_ work on chests... The problem is that none of the loot tables are configured in a way to let them work with luck. You see, every item entry on a loot table has a "quality" value, which uses the luck attribute to alter the item's chance of appearing... However, by default there is no value set, so the luck does nothing. If you were to go through and edit the loot tables with data packs you could make it actually work, but I guess Mojang either got too lazy or decided to stop developing the effect so they didn't fix to loot tables to work with it (I say lazy because it would take a LOT of time setting different quality values for every item in the loot pool, especially when taking into account game balance).

    Maybe luck was designed to be an internal debugging tool, or designed as something else and adapted to that role.
    You set your test code to use luck. You test your code (maybe the last thing they were testing was luck of the sea, and that's why it works for fishing). It works. You make it an effect and ship it. Next effect, you just swap out what luck effects, or loot tables, or whatever else you're trying to test.

    It would be relatively easy to create a luck system that is not complicated and just works:
    Lucky lvl1: The RNG picks the next random number, and another extra, and chooses the "best one" out of them
    Unlucky lvl1: same but chooses the "worst one"
    This way it could affect everything random ingame. Every level would increase the additional random numbers.

    5:03 some potion effects have a different level limit. If you gave yourself jump boost 127 in java, it would work, but 128 would prevent jumping entirely. Instant damage 29+is basically just like getting hit by pre-1.12 snowballs. Using an anti-immunity-frame mod, I discovered that poison/wither 128+ is the same is level 0 (displays as 1). These limits go for almost anything nbt. The maximum possible velocity you can summon an entity with is 10,10,10. Anything higher is counted as 0. Enchantment level 32768 (typed 32767 in commands) is the max you can put on an item with /give. Luck might work fine with lower levels.

    I think it would be cool, if the luck effect ever worked, to add a sort of Karma system to servers. If you help people out and are nice and such, you slowly accumulate good Karma, or luck, and when you are mean or an overall worse person, you get bad Karma, or bad luck. This could be applied to a survival server or a multiplayer games server, with luck effecting reward chests or normal world generated chests. Maybe, on skyblock, for example, luck could effect who you get for your team mates or what you start with (I know there are kits, but the chests that spawned in). I dont know, sounds like it could help as a bit of a server moderater of sorts, almost forcing people to be nice or get a disadvantage.

    Luck and badluck effect should apply to mob drops and mining ores too. Ores have a chance of dropping like fortune 3 without that enchantment on pickaxe or act as looting without enchantments similar to fishing as it can drop better loot without luck of the sea enchantment. It should be hard to obtain or impossible to brew but should be available in a special loot table like the upcoming deepdark chest loot. I know this video is before the update but hopefully you'll see this comment. I mean luck and badluck should be like a mysterious potion like suspicious stew. The suspicious potion should be hard to obtain like difficult ingredient of brewing or a rare flower for suspicious stew version of this potion. It should give looting effect and fortune effect like it gives luck of the sea effect. And badluck should be vise versa. It should have less chance of good luck and high chance of badluck like 25% and 75%. It is definitely not for late game. It's for early game. Or what I want is too much, it should at least give us double or rarely triple exp if we get luck and half the normal amount of we get badluck. I know it's too much but it's just imagination. Don't bother to say it's too much in reply. Say your thoughts in reply section.
    Edit: ok nevermind you explained why it shouldn't work as I thought. If I was a dev id surely try to do it. Iit maybe difficult but it can be done part by part in updates slowly. It's like trying to change 1.2 terrain directly to 1.18 terrain. It can't be done at a time. And this definitely would be a major change. So if I was a dev, I'd have done it slowly but surely. First adding obtainability, then next update luck effect and badluck effect then its ability to improve/worsen mob drops then later improving ore drops.
