    It might be 3 or more decades ago but I remember the original honey gourami before all these new color morphs came around, and I thought they were quite striking little fish. I don't think it's possible to get the original color variety anymore, which is a shame

    • @mattferg84
      @mattferg84 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a pair I absolutely love in my shallow tank, I’ve been so pleasantly surprised at how fun they are to interact with. How would you describe the coloration on the gourami’s 30 years ago?

    • @Paul-li9hq
      @Paul-li9hq ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Matt Ferguson much more subtle. Dorsal was still yellow - but not as vivid as now. Throat on the male was still blue (a vivid blue when in breeding dress) body colouration was more muted - more brownish, but with a real honey tone to it. Hence the name.
      It just looked more 'natural'. The colour morphs are very pretty: if you want a showy fish that stands out from a distance despite its small size - this fish is a winner, for sure.
      I don't think it's possible to post pictures in here, but Google searches for 'original honey gourami colouration' will eventually pull pics up (amongst the dozens of pics of the new morphs.)

      I prefer the new sunset versions of honey gouramis because they’re yellow all year round while the wild type ones get dull after breeding.

      @PondScummer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Paul-li9hq I believe you can still get wildtype honey gourami but they seem to be rare and are all probably wild-caught

      This is so true. I've had really good luck with the online stores recommended by Aquarium Co-op. When I purchase honey gourami locally, they seem to "time out" for lack of a better term. So far, I've not had this problem with online purchases

    1. How long can I keep the fishes in a tub with previous water until I rescape
    2. Do u suggest to save the water from old tank and reuse it, say 50 percent or so
    Whenever I rescape I face these issues and end up losing some fishes

    • @MJAquascaping
      @MJAquascaping  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. If you keep a filter running on the tub with fish, you can keep them in there for a few weeks without any issues.
      2. Nah the water itself contains very little beneficial bacteria, so there's not really a point in keeping the water.

      No new aquasoil in here. Adding new soil could be dangerous if it releases a lot of ammonia, so in that case it would be better to add the fish a week or so later.

      Yes could be dangerous but once I rescaped my tank using lots of new Amazonia I (the first edition) on top of a small layer of used Amazonia and no single critters or fishes lost. The ammonia spike must have been low or non existent due to the well cycled filter, the old soil and dense planting. I have stopped testing water params many years ago because test kits for the hobbyist delivered unreliable results back then. Might be different nowadays. I tried the whole thing out of curiosity and probably had luck on my side.

      @@MJAquascaping Thank you! So if i wanted to add new soil, should i soak the soil in a separate container or perhaps cycle it with bacteria in another container
