And also thinking back on it, I think xibalba's name was mentioned in the Road to El Derado.... (In the scene where they were tossing gold off of a sacrificial platform into that whirlpool.....)
I remember seeing the reviews of Book of Life: "... a glorification of Mexican culture..." and generally negative. Then Coco came out, and it was praised. It really bothered me, especially when I, a Mexican and always feeling like my culture is ignored, enjoyed both and adored the fact that both are - in their own ways - faithful representations of Mexican culture. Coco made me connect strongly with my father's side of the family, but having the mother in Book of Life - with the characters of Xibalba, La Santa Muerte, and the practice of bull-fighting which I actually saw when I was really little - made me connect my roots back to Mexico. The wooden designs are amazing, like my grandparents dolls. There is so much culture in Book of Life that cannot be ignored.
The problem with the book of life is that more than it seems to be a faithful representation of the Mexican culture, it seems more like a representation of the Spanish culture than the Mexican one, except for one or another detail or reference and I say it like someone who lives in Mexico, a person who knows perfectly what Mexican culture is really like

This movie is definetly one my favourites. It has literally everything a good movie needs. The music is literally beautiful. The characters work with each really well with each other. A good amount of humour, romance and paranormal/myth. The characters also have depth and none of them are flat, 2D characters. Also, I absolutely adore the fact that Maria, Manolo and Joaquin stay friends at the end.
I saw it in the theater with a friend of mine when it released, and I loved it. The soundtrack was so fun to listen to not to mention how the animation was so different from everything else around that time. But of course I now apricate it even more since I now know Xibalba was played by the bad ass Ron Perlman. It's just such a fun movie and more people should give it credit for that!
I ended up watching this two or three years ago through my high school Spanish class, and nearly forgot about it with all that's happened in the world since. I love how the school kids in the movie perfectly represented how I (and probably a good chunk of other people in the class) felt about the movie, uninterested at first but becoming quite invested as the story went on. Knowing about all the personal connections between Jorge and his work is so cool, and honestly boosts my confidence about the vision for my own works. Great video, thanks for reminding me of this movie!
22:24 Fun fact if anyone is interested relating to this song: The writers behind this song (aka Us the duo) actually played this song during their own wedding (specially during their wedding vows) which honestly this is a nice detail! :)
15:24 i disagree and agree at the same time with this. i like how she was stil acting feminine a bit of the time, but she still has those typical "stronk independant wamin" moments. im not saying every female character needs to be a diswasher damsel in distress. just that idk the parts where they just simply use moments to dig at men or be like "look shes not doing what women typically do" are counter-intuitive to the goal with those.
I don't necessarily like that they portray most other women in the story as you know...desperate damsels in distress envious of Maria, but it's not like she ever wanted to stand out or made fun of them. I feel like as a character she's pretty well constructed. She doesn't expect to be courted to soon after coming back home. She just wants to see her father and friends again. I like that about the character which is why she's one of my favorites.
One theme you mentioned and i Adore in this movie : Out of fight strengh. The trio show that much strengh in battle, but even more outside of it, manolo in his songs to moove people, Maria in her actions, her words and freedom, and Joacquim, the strongest in battle, is the one that sacrifice himself to save his friends.
As an autistic person I get attached to a few movies and only a few, I rewatch them so many times I can’t even count, one day when I was around 8 I went to Bali with family, we found a place that sold DVD’s and bought the book of life, from then on I rewatched it so many times, when I no longer had the DVD I was so upset, until it came on nexflix, you know as soon as I saw it had been placed there I started watching it. It was like a hyperfixation coming back to life It’s a beautiful movie, it shows what movies can be and how unique they can be if you give artists a chance to do something more in their style. And it gives perfect time to represent a different culture and maybe the movie played a large part into while I respected other cultures from a very young age. I’m thankful I was raised on it To this day it’s still one of my favs, along with coraline, into the spider verse, and a few others, so you know it’s great when all the other movies are so good
I’m glad somebody brought attention to this underrated film. I agree that Coco is a pretty spectacular movie, but when I want to watch a film about the Day of the Dead on Nov. 1-2 it’s always going to be this one. Also as a person who loves ‘Art of’ books this movie is eye candy for me in the best way.
Fearless and brave are two different things. Being brave means no matter how afraid you are you still face it. Being fearless means you aren’t afraid. I remember hearing something similar to this lol.
I haven't seen Coco yet, mostly because I was afraid it would be similar to Book of Life. Which is a beautiful underrated movie! I love how the story is told with wooden figurines, which I haven't seen in other movies. The only problem I had with the movie was Channing Tatum's character. I mean everyone else had an accent but..you could just tell that Channing Tatum was that guy. But other than that, I loved it! And other people should definitely check it out! ^^
I personally enjoy The Book of Life more than Coco, it touched my heart in a very personal way, even though Coco did the same, The Book of Life just hit harder, and I love it so much
I've seen both but I preferred coco, probably as I'm not much for love triangles or love main plots. The book of life aesthetic is actually the one I preferred though.
I remember watching Book of Life in theaters when it first came out and I was mesmerized by Jorge Gutierrez work and art style that it kind of inspires me to follow what I want to do as a career. And coming from Mexican parents, I love both that movie and Coco, but Book of Life has a very special place in heart. Even recently, I just finished watching Gutierrez's more recent project Maya and the Three, a limited series on Netflix. And once again Gutierrez's art style and storytelling was really good and something I would watch again.
I half expected you to talk about that "Mas y Mas" song Jorge used for Joachim's theme song...and for Miracle City shenanigans in El Tigre. Or at least some knockoff version of it.
I remember first watching this movie at school during our vacant hours and I absolutely loved it! Fast forward to now, I'm surprised not as much people are talking about this film. The animation is georgeuos, the music is beautiful and the story is just- y e s Loved your analysis, it perfectly encapsulates how I feel about this film.
I also love the Day of the Dead tradition and Mexico's views on Death itself. As Finny said; instead of it being something to be feared or hated, Mexicans see it as fact of life...and even a transition to a new life (i.e. either going into Heaven or...downstairs.) Whereas most Americans see death as something so terrifying that they do anything to try and cheat it. If not that, they live by the mindset of "dead people are just plain gone." Translation: "There's no afterlife, just empty nothingness waiting for us after death." I question how such people are able to live their lives under such stinkin' thinkin'
@@TheDeathmail I think it’s more of like a reassurance thing. For some people the idea of an everlasting afterlife, whether good or bad, sounds awful but the idea of just ceasing to exist provides more serenity and peace.
@@TheDeathmail I believe in no afterlife as that is just what would make the most sense. The closest thing to living on after death would be being remembered by loved ones and those who you've made an impact on. No continued consciousness, just proof of your existence in memories. More physical proof such as statues technically would apply too, but they don't have the same feel as living on in memories, heh.
Book Of Life is one of my favorite movies of all time, It had a very interesting protagonist who wants to be a musician but is pretty much forced to take another path on life, The way they represented the world of the dead is so good, It's full of colors based on the festival and stuff while the way the "story" and "real life" parts have different designs, I was also very much shocked that the janitor is literally death himself, Never payed attention to him as I thought he was just an extra side character for its introduction part
I remember watching The Book of Life when I was like 8 or so and although I don't remember much, I really adored it. Although not Mexican myself, but as a Pilipino I enjoyed seeing different cultures get integrated into movies more
I remember one time I watched book of life twice in one sitting and enjoyed it each time it really is a great movie and I’m glad at least some people remember or have heard of it

Ever since I was a kid The Book of Life has always stood out to me amongst films. Especially when Coco came out, and I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it truly deserves. Though obviously not the most perfect movie out there, its definitely one worth a watch.
The Book of Life was one of my favorite movies, ever since the first time I watched it years ago. Coco is much more recent so of course people are talking about that more. I love both movies but they are completely different so it's hard to compare them. I can definitely say the original songs in Book of Life stuck with me and I have to listen to them again every now and then. I also enjoy the movie every time I re-watch it. I learned a lot of interesting stuff about the movie from your video so thank you and good job!

ive been watching gutierrez since el tigre. i LOVE this artist and i LOVE that i can instantly know his art style the second i see it. an absolute inspiration for having a unique artstyle and embracing it

Also, watching an english-speaking youtuber talk about it with such respect and passion it's honestly really cool
I've loved The Book of Life since it came out. It's such a blast, and the artstyle is an added bonus since I loved El Tigre as a kid (I made sure to look out for any easter eggs to it and found one first time around)
I remember taking my wife to see this in theaters for her birthday. I figured I would be half asleep through the movie, but enjoyed every moment for it.
Seeing the thumbnail was like memory whiplash. In a single second I relived the entire first and second viewings of the movie and the next second clicked start.

I play piano but this movie has always made me want to change to guitar because of the beautiful songs. Yes it might take a while but great things always take great time.
something I noticed about the candle maker is that he has no clear joints like the rest of the characters so this is implying that he is made of a softer material like the wax he uses to make the candle
When I was little I loved this movie to death. Me and my brother were Manolo and Joaquin for Halloween. It always disappointed me that in Spanish class we talked about Coco And not the Book of Life, because I love everything about the movie the visuals, the story, and the songs. Definitely 10/10😁

Fun fact if anyone is interested relating to this song: The writers behind this song (aka Us the duo) actually played this song during their own wedding (specially during their wedding vows) which honestly this is a nice detail! :)
I love The Book of Life!!!!!!! So much more than I love Coco.
I also know all the songs in both movies by heart.
I understand what you mean. She is certainly a great character but can play into the not like other girls trope at certain moments.
It was like a hyperfixation coming back to life
It’s a beautiful movie, it shows what movies can be and how unique they can be if you give artists a chance to do something more in their style. And it gives perfect time to represent a different culture and maybe the movie played a large part into while I respected other cultures from a very young age. I’m thankful I was raised on it
To this day it’s still one of my favs, along with coraline, into the spider verse, and a few others, so you know it’s great when all the other movies are so good
I’m glad somebody brought attention to this underrated film. I agree that Coco is a pretty spectacular movie, but when I want to watch a film about the Day of the Dead on Nov. 1-2 it’s always going to be this one. Also as a person who loves ‘Art of’ books this movie is eye candy for me in the best way.
I admit that when I was young, I rewatched this film more than 10 times.
IT WAS SUCH A GREAT MOVIE
They are completely different movies only similar when you look at it really superficially
@@psgamer-il2pt Oh I know now. I finally watched Coco and I absolutely love it
I totally agree with your view, both movies made me cry, but the Book of Life touched my heart like no other.
And once again Gutierrez's art style and storytelling was really good and something I would watch again.
i really thank my uncle for buying the cd for me 6 years ago i'll never forget this movie
I feel stupid, looking at it now and you showing that he made El Tigre, a lot of these characters look like they'd fit in that show lol
I'm going so far that I would say, that the Book of life is my favourite animated movie! Sadly, not a lot of people knows about it!
I half expected you to talk about that "Mas y Mas" song Jorge used for Joachim's theme song...and for Miracle City shenanigans in El Tigre. Or at least some knockoff version of it.
I am so glad someone finally talked about this movie because I watch it at least once a year and I just love it so much
I remember first watching this movie at school during our vacant hours and I absolutely loved it!
Fast forward to now, I'm surprised not as much people are talking about this film. The animation is georgeuos, the music is beautiful and the story is just- y e s
Loved your analysis, it perfectly encapsulates how I feel about this film.
it's really interesting how this movie not only telling a great story but also giving us a brilliant message about being a Artist.
I also love the Day of the Dead tradition and Mexico's views on Death itself. As Finny said; instead of it being something to be feared or hated, Mexicans see it as fact of life...and even a transition to a new life (i.e. either going into Heaven or...downstairs.)
Whereas most Americans see death as something so terrifying that they do anything to try and cheat it. If not that, they live by the mindset of "dead people are just plain gone." Translation: "There's no afterlife, just empty nothingness waiting for us after death."
I question how such people are able to live their lives under such stinkin' thinkin'
The answer to why they want to believe in no afterlife is simple... they want no consequences after death.... simple as that.
@@TheDeathmail I mean, we have our Heaven...but most religious people think the idea of spirits returning (even for a day) is nonsense
You can probably thank the Puritans for a fear of death and evil.
The Book of Life was very nostalgic to me as someone who came from a Mexican family, I loved the movie. It gives me good memories
I remember watching The Book of Life when I was like 8 or so and although I don't remember much, I really adored it. Although not Mexican myself, but as a Pilipino I enjoyed seeing different cultures get integrated into movies more
I mostly watch the book of life to hear Diego Lunas voice because he voice acts as the second main character of my favorite show lol
I remember one time I watched book of life twice in one sitting and enjoyed it each time it really is a great movie and I’m glad at least some people remember or have heard of it
I remember the book of life my favorite part is when he sings to the ball instead of killing it I love that song.
THIS MOVIE WAS MY CHILDHOOD! ME AND MY MOTHER WOULD WATCH THIS ALL THE TIME! *IT IS STILL TO THIS DAY MY FAVOURITE DAY OF THE DAY MOVIE AND IT DESERVES TO BE REMEMBERED!*
WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO FIND THIS VIDEO?! I absolutely ADORE this movie! I’m personally with you Finn, as much I enjoyed Coco, I honestly prefer The Book of Life. I also own the movie’s art book!
FINALLY, people are actually giving this movie attention!! It's definitely one of my favorites; so much so that I actually based at least 2 past Spanish projects on the music of it!
I really like Book of Life. I feel it was underappreciated anyway. Really wish others could appreciate it.
When I first saw the trailer for coco I asked people ‘isn’t this just the book of life?’ And no one knew what the hell I was on about! I’m so glad someone else remembers this movie
The Book of Life, not even joking, has been my favorite movie for the past six years or so. I could probably recite the script by heart ngl.
I just got my chance to wath The Book Of Life few days ago and it was truly wonderful. And after i got back to watch this video of your words, Finn, then you just made it so much better for me. I just feel sad over i never got my chance to watch it when it came out. But in the end, thanks for make this video so we could love it much more. :D
G I’ve seen this theme three times in my life already with the day of the dead thing Coco did it the book of life did it and El Tigre did it, by the way El Tegre is so underrated but it was so good or at least that’s how I remember it .
Ever since I was a kid The Book of Life has always stood out to me amongst films. Especially when Coco came out, and I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it truly deserves. Though obviously not the most perfect movie out there, its definitely one worth a watch.
No matter what people say, the book of life is a masterpiece in my eyes and will always be my favorite.
IM SO HAPPY I FOUND SOMEONE ELSE WHO STOOD BY THE FACT THE BOOK OF LIFE WAS SOOO MUCH BETTER, from literally everything. Coco was an amazing movie i just had such a better connection to The Book Of Life better.
I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I FORGOT ABOUT THIS MOVIE I LOVED IT SO MUCH
I’ve watch the book of life like 6 or more times honestly it’s a great movie more people should know about it ‘I will wait for u’ is the song that has been playing in my head for like 5 years, love this movie :D
Istg it’s been years since I first saw this movie, and I must have watched it 26472839284 times by now. This movie is my existence and I’m so glad people love it just as much as I do. This movie means way to much to me
Love both movies. Does anyone actually care which is better? Watch both!!!!! And do I even have to mention "I love you too much" or "Remember Me". Just awesome songs.
ive been watching gutierrez since el tigre. i LOVE this artist and i LOVE that i can instantly know his art style the second i see it. an absolute inspiration for having a unique artstyle and embracing it
I thought was the only person that
knew about the greatness of this movie.
It is a revolutionary movie!! I mean, as a Mexican animator this means the world to me and it just inspires me to make it into the industry so I create my own stories and share them with the world. Also, watching an english-speaking youtuber talk about it with such respect and passion it's honestly really cool
I preferred Coco. It made me cry and feel things. The book of life was entertaining though. Also that trickster death god looks like Discord
It's funny that back then people thought that Coco was a copy of the Book of Life. I love the characters in the movie.
When my mom goes shopping
Me : I wIlL wAiT I WiLl WaIt FoR YoU
Seeing the thumbnail was like memory whiplash. In a single second I relived the entire first and second viewings of the movie and the next second clicked start.
As Mad Munchkin says"stay creative". In this case; the art and style of the movie. 😁
One of my favorite movies, just the whole concept
I was born on the same day lol
Hello. I am Hispanic. Please forgive any bad English grammar.
Please never apologize for excitement of other cultures, even if expressed through a way you think is embarrassing.
I have seen a. Saying “imitation the most genuine flattery” and anyone who does get mad at such a thing probably refers to Hispanic people as Latinx, which we hate, haha.
I thought I was the only one who remembered this movie, it feels so good to know that someone loves book of life just as much as I do!
0:28 ME! ME! DOWN HERE! BOOK OF LIFE FAN JUST BELOW THE VIDEO!
I personally love both movies. Even with very similar styles and all that, they both tell different unique stories that are amazing. Think Coco still deserves high recognition, but I also think The Book of Life deserves just as much.
I watched this as a kid. So amazing, they did great on this. I watched this over and over and didn’t get tired of it! Even, now I still love it.
honestly the first time I watched this movie, I was in 4th grade, drinking hot chocolate, in my classroom, with all my classmates
I watched this when I was around 7 and I was enthralled with it for the rest of my life
I did personally like The Book of Life weigh more than cocoa even though design-wise and character-wise I do like the book of life more but when it comes to the family part and the personality I enjoyed Coco more
How can anyone NOT remember or love book of life its AMAZING and I I watched it recently
Went to the cinema multiple times to see this, even went to a Día de los Muertos costume party dressed as manolo which was a total hit. Also, as a mexican living in northern-most part of the republic, I sesonate much more to The book of Life. Cheers!
this was a favourite as a child and now is still in my top 5
0:25 ME! ME! I KNOW THAT MOVIE! ME! ME!
Me too, me too
I absolutely adored everything about the book of life, and I can’t believe people never talk about it.
I love The book of life better than Coco by A LOT, it has always been an inspiration for me for a lot of things. This movie has helped me for a lot of things, both my personality and a funny one… my taste in a person for a relationship 😂 The musician, the kind, caring, generous and loveable person is the best type.
I play piano but this movie has always made me want to change to guitar because of the beautiful songs. Yes it might take a while but great things always take great time.
The apology song towards the bulls always brings a tear in my eye.
something I noticed about the candle maker is that he has no clear joints like the rest of the characters so this is implying that he is made of a softer material like the wax he uses to make the candle
AAARGH THE BOOK OF LIFE IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE I LITERALLY MADE MY CHILDHOOD
When I was little I loved this movie to death. Me and my brother were Manolo and Joaquin for Halloween. It always disappointed me that in Spanish class we talked about Coco And not the Book of Life, because I love everything about the movie the visuals, the story, and the songs. Definitely 10/10😁
im so happy that people are finally talking about this movie, i was OBSESSED with it when i was younger but no one seems to remember about it
You should watch Maya and the three on Netflix as jorge Gutierrez was also behind it and I've been watching it daily since it premiered and so many people enjoyed it 😀 I love these video btw
