This movie was planned to be a trilogy with the sequels focusing on Joachim in one and Maria in the other. I really wish the director had gotten to make them.
There has been news about a sequel, No release date for The Book Of Life 2 was provided following the initial conformation, and Gutierrez clarified the sequel would have to wait under he'd completed work on another, then unannounced project. It appears Maya And The Three - which is described as the Mexican Lord Of The Rings - is that secret project, so its unlikely work will start on Book Of Life 2 until the series is released. With that timeframe in mind, it will likely be a few more years until the follow-up arrives.
@@idontknowhowigothere5474 I feel like if the director goes into a project KNOWING he wants to tell a trilogy and what beats the characters will go through it can be very good. Like the Kung Fu Panda or How to Train Your Dragon movies, where all 3 are very good and well done since the directors intended the series to unfold the way it did.
In 2015 when my sis was like 2-3 she said “Why is the bull sad?” And our step brother who was 6-8 said “It wants to die” this is why this is my favorite movie
Both themes were the same and were shown in the same way. Both movies had a boy who had a family job that they didnt want to continue in order to become musicians. I'm not saying Coco copied but there are alot of similarities.
I remember when I was little I LOVED this movie. And when I got older I wanted to rewatch it and when I did the memories flowed through me, the songs, the story, the characters everything. This movie is really good and I think it was that movie that I only watched because when I was little I felt like the only one who did (I was made fun of for singing one of the songs). But it will always hold a special place in my heart.
"ever heard of Book of Life?" "Uh, YESSSS!!" I remember re-watching it over and over again and obsessing that apology song Manolo sang to the bull in the other world. And I also remember my sister deleted that movie that I recorded and me crying lol. It was one of my favourite movies, I didn't know people compared Coco and The Book of Life but I see why. I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN IT GETS MENTIONED AGAIN AHHH- IT'S SUCH A GOOD MOVIE, I WOULD WATCH IT AGAIN
I'm pretty sure Maria is supposed to be a "not like other girls" type of love interest xD The feminist moments are also there because in various parts of México there's sexism even to this day, usually passed from generations of mothers, telling their daughters that they should prepare to be "good wives" when they're older, teaching them how to do all of the chores at home, but i guess it depends on the family too, seeing how the story is set years ago you could say that Maria was ahead of her time (also it may just be me but i really like her sassy moments ) Btw the twin cousins are based on the "adelitas" or "soldaderas", women that helped and fought along the soldiers on the Mexican Revolution!
Yeah! Especially during the time the Spanish conquered there was very much a disparity of women who were able to pursue education. You could really only get away with it if you were a noble or part of the church. I liked this video but tbhh I've seen kids say stuff that are along the lines as the sentences Maria said..we can't underestimate children like that because some are very capable of voicing things like that *especially* when literature is heavily encouraged in childhood. I'm personally glad they made her a feminist figure because sadly as much as I adore my Mexican culture, like every culture, there's a past deeply rooted in sexism.
Nah im upset at this review” or wtv she was doing, if she was seeing what people were comparing and explaining how it is different then she didnt have to put unnecessary comments like when maria was a kid and saying that shes no ones girl” like how is that important? Also yeah this TH-camr is white and these are two Hispanic movies why is she even doing this? Like if she really understood mexican culture then ok, but obviously not and she was even more confused at why the characters were like this
I usually likes the way she revises movies but I appreciated that she didn’t feel the need to do so with this one. I actually really liked this movie (probably cuz I’m Hispanic) and absolutely loved the apology song too. 👏
For the "Joaquin ranting at Maria about his medals" scene, I always interpreted her sarcastic comment as her being miffed that he didn't bother asking her about what SHE likes or what she's done or experienced. She showed him the courtesy of asking him about something he was passionate about and she just wanted him to reciprocate. Like, yeah, she could've just interrupted him and redirected the conversation to herself, but it wouldn't have been the same: she didn't just want to get him to stop talking about himself - she wanted him to show an interest in her and to try and get to know her beyond just 'hey look pretty woman brain go brrr'.
I actually never realized that Joaquín was basically set up to be the main character only for it to end up being Manolo. With him having no family, having to live up to his fathers legacy, and Xibalba giving him the metal of everlasting life it just made sense we would follow him but nope!
One of my complaints about Joaquin is after Maria “died” and Manolo said, “It should’ve been me,” Joaquin, instead of comforting his friend said, “Yes, it should have.” What kind of friend does that?
to be fair he loved maria, clearly upset that shit just spills out, even to people you care about. he probably regretted saying it afterwards after seeing maria really upset about it
GUY TELLS FRIEND TO DIE, INSTANTLY REGRETS IT Also, I hate that scene. It just leaves a pit in my stomach. What makes me even more sadder is if you look closer, Joaquin looks at Maria's comatose body sadly, then when General Posada's leaving, Joaquin glares at Manolo, in which Manolo just shows a guilty expression. I HATE YOU JOAQUIN NO MEDALS FOR YOU MAGGOT
@@strawberrymilk6497 wait wait wait wait wait, what.did.you.say? What.did.you.say? Look it’s your opinion but I just feel shock, but again, who am I to judge?
One of my complains for the movie is that Xibalba and La Muerte don't really do much as "rulers"... Of course they make the plot of the movie happen, but what I mean is The Candlemaker seems to be the one and ONLY in charge of keeping balance between both lands, as well as creating the candles of life that embody each and every living mortal on Earth. While La Muerte and Xibalba don't do anything outside of hanging out with each other, partying and of course place bets. The movie itself doesn't really make clear what exactly do they do outside of that, so as "rulers of lands" they are kind of useless. Nevertheless I love both of them. Their personalities and relationship are very fun to watch!
This might sound kinda stupid to say but i think usually xibalba and la muerte arent supposed to interfere with the living. Plus, since it was dia de los muertos, they brought back the sanchez family to help fight jackal, so i thought they brought meaning to the story 🤷 might not make too much sense so im sorry lol
I thought they made it clear what they are supposed to do. The candlemaker handles the life and death itself while La Muerte and Xilbaba are caretakers of the afterlife. I don't think they are rulers of life and death itself, although being gods they probably have the power.
Me : **sees a video titled "Ever HEARD of The Book of Life"** Also me : **clicks immediately** I watched The Book of Life as a kid, I liked it immediately because it was good! I have quite grown and I still love it til this very day ❤ I kind of got it confuse when I heard of the movie Coco in the cinemas and kept asking my mom of the title of it cuz I forgot (I was only able to watch The Book of Life twice when I was a kid). I almost thought that time that the movie was being remake or I was just dreaming? because the only thing I remembered that time where the skeleton, a few characters and the songs.
i remember seeing it in thetures with my dad i enjoyed it so much and it always brings a smile to my face upon memory it’s one of the things that makes me want to be more in touch with my culture.
La Muerte and Xi Balba's relationship, despite being Hella rocky, was adorable. Xi Balba kinda reminded me of Discord from Friendship is Magic. I really hope we get to see the two of them again some time in the future.
@@Annoniempje480 it's from the same director! Jorge R. Gutierrez. He also made the series Maya and the Three! It's really good, worth a watch if you enjoy his other works.
(lil spoilers for the apology song lol haha) the apology song is really beautiful, its legit just Monolo apologizing to a bull- for the bloodshed, the war, the death, and asking for forgiveness for all the deaths- in the song he says ‘And all the thousands before you, I owe you an apology and one long overdue.’ As, despite being only seen as ruthless monsters, bulls still have a will to live, they don’t wanna die. And, really bad fact, bulls don’t get angry at the color red- the capes are only red so people don’t see the blood of the animal- as ramming into walls could make their heads bleed.
I saw the movie. I like the interactions between the gods of life and death. I love that the guys aren't toxic. I love it when friends stay friends despite liking the same girl. This is awesome.
Everyone thought this and Coco were ripoffs of each other because it’s a holiday that isn’t very…noticed? Which is kinda upsetting because all holidays and all things should be equally respected.
@@frijolesborracho9340 yeahhh- even if the movie is about the day of the dead, that doesn’t mean that Disney thinks that’s their only holiday. That doesn’t really make sense. A movie can be about one holiday, without the people making it thinking that specific holiday is the only holiday.
Omg one of my favorite movies 😭 so underrated 🥺🥺💕 Also in defending of Maria, I feel the historical time of the movie taking place many girls didn't have the privilege to go off and learn about things she did. Maria grew up educated and with a broader horizon on the world. Probably why the other girls didn't understand her new actions. Also she was being 1000% sarcastic as heck with Joaquin when saying how she'd be a loyal housewife, ofc she'd get defensive over his response with how much she's learned what girls can do rather than just be in at home 24/7. It just wasn't for her to be that way. I love her sarcastic and spunky attitude lol. It makes her fun and while it could come off like nOt liKe oTheR giRls, she never once puts down any other girls for knowing what she knows or acts better than them. She just acts as herself! Okay I'm done 😅, love the video tho 🥺💕
Also this movie came out during the NLOG 2010 era, so while the historical setting of the movie is important, the movie itself could have felt like a product of its time in that regard. I appreciate that Maria herself just did her thing without making a big stink of it (it was more so the townspeople who commented on her independence). And considering the more fantastical elements of the movie format, Maria being OP is understandable. But with other media of the time, some male writers don’t know how to write strong women without comparing them to “other girls”.
I also believe (being Hispanic myself) that people compare it because of the themes of relationships and families. Family is such an integral part of Mexican/Central American culture, it's very hard to make an authentic story without addressing it
@KeybladeMaster64 yes you are right but in the eyes of mexicans/Latinos the people from central and south America are still one of them. I'm saying this as a Mexican. Also both south/central america and Mexico celebrate a derivative of the day of the dead. This is actually similar to how Americans view the British. Similar language and culture but with its differences. Also Mexico is not part of north America. It once was but not anymore. Y do youthink the migration police and borders exist.
As a hispanic, The Book of Life is my FAVORITE movie ever. Watched it 10+ times, and even bought the DVD disk for me to watch it whenever I want ❤ Thank you for doing video of it eee
Honestly, I always liked Manolo more than Joaquin, in the movie Joaquin constantly has the need to talk about himself, like in the scene where Maria asks him about his medals, she was forced to start a conversation for the good of her people, so Maria chose to ask Joaquin about something that interests him like his medals, the normal thing after this should be for Joaquin to start talking about his medals and then ask Maria about something that she is also interested in, but instead of that He keeps talking about himself without showing any interest in what Maria likes and besides that, Joaquin's vision of women is literally "that they cook and pay attention to him" Honestly, Maria was within her right to getting angry about that these actions that joaquin commits are the reason why manolo is the protagonist because even if joaquing's character's backstory is more interesting than manolo's, his personality it is not and it can come off as really annoying for a certain part of the viewers including me.
OMG OMG OMG- I’ve loved The Book of Life ever since I was little, and this is the first time I’ve seen someone on TH-cam talk about it! It was honestly such a comfort movie growing up, and I also agree that it irked me when people said it ripped off Coco. I mean, yes they have similar premises, but it’s the same with any holiday based film. If anything I’m glad Dia De Muertos is beginning to be seen more. Really the only thing I didn’t like when it comes to the two movies, is that The Book of Life didn’t get as much recognition when compared to Coco (I mean Disney is bound to get more attention, but still). I think it’s such a fun movie, with all of the different textures, colors, and characters, so I’m glad it seems to be getting more attention. I do pretty much agree on all of the points you made when talking about the characters. I also wish we got to see more of Juaquin, since it seemed he had a very compelling story that we sadly didn’t really see throughout the movie. And I always thought Maria was cool when I was a kid (since I didn’t see many girl characters who were both active and feminine growing up), but I do agree that a bunch of her dialogue seems to be confusing, and pretty much giving mixed signals. But still, I honestly find the movie so charming, and I’m glad you also enjoyed it!
I watch this movie from time to time, because I LOVE the style of the characters. 3D animation, but wooden puppetry style?! Amazing. The story is good too, if a bit goofy. And I WISH La Muerte had a collector doll released. I would pay so much money for one. (But does anyone else realize that the Adelitas started feeling Joaquin up at the end of the movie?? Is that alluding to a *thing* between them?)
I am surprised you didn't talk about the two gods more. I found their relationships quite cool, how we can see who is supposed t obe good and evil but in the end, both of them bet on the life of mortals, making their life harder with their rivalry BUT despite all that scheming and backstabbing both of them clearly love each other (Which I found really cute)
I remember watching this movie as a kid and to this day I still quote “CHURROS! CHURROS!” *slince* “fROSTED CHURROS!” It was literally a one off line with an unnamed character but still peak comedy in my eyes
I think one of the reasons for the ladies gossiping about her, they gossip like that because of the time period that they are in. They give hints that this is a little ways in the past compared to where the museum scene is. Also, though I agree with you on much of Maria's character, I think because it was 2013 many female leads/protagonists suffer from being that strange middle ground of she's a girl but she's not like the other girls. She's a rare case for me though since she was actually kinda likable. Love Manolo and Joaquin, their interactions are amazing and it really feels like two people who have known each other their whole lives and still care for each other. Also, it seems like the grandmother wasn't disappointed in him cause of the Bull killing and not doing it, but I think it was because he didn't seem proud to stand up for/be himself. Also, his interactions with his opera singing cousin was amazing for me. Loved his family.
Oh god the 2013 “not like other girls” era was a pretty dark time for me. My thinking was so warped and dichotomous (not to mention internally misogynistic), partly because of these types of role models and messages being peddled in the media. To say the least I did not like the person I was back then
@@kcm7813 yeah that’s for sure. I have to keep reminding myself that cringing at my pay means I’ve grown. But I’m still kind of mad at myself for acting that way and buying into that mindset, especially since I was bullied by the “not like other girls” crowd.
I absolutely love the book of life. It’s one of my childhood movies that I can’t get enough of! I watched it recently on TH-cam- (I have the DVD of it, but I didn’t ask my mom to play it so I could watch it, because she wasn’t there at that time and neither was my dad.). The bull scene-song-thing made me almost tear up, which is a first since I rarely cry during movies. I watched Coco at school and yeah they’re really different. The only similarity is the holiday they’re based on.
I watched the book of life when it came out in theaters with my mother and my siblings because my mom's from mexico and we wanted to see something about Mexican culture for once. I bought it on dvd as soon as it was available too!
It's nice to hear someone agrees with me about Maria's behavior. I love this movie and the characters but I feel like the excessive modern feminism in many movies is pushed too far and it makes the female characters come off as really rude instead of independent. Maria misleading Monolo and Joaquin (lemme know if I spelled those wrong) is pretty uncalled for in my opinion. She really isn't giving them a very fair chance. Hey, sometimes guys just need a push in the right direction. If they'd shown more of her side of things while growing up, like maybe the school she ended up going to was really focused on teaching the girls that they're only there to love men (objectifying women, etc), then maybe her behavior would actually make sense. Anyway, just really appreciated that you acknowledged it :)
Yeah I was talking about it with a friend and we agreed that at certain parts Maria embodied the phrase “gatekeep, gaslight, girl boss”. Which could work if we explored her character more in depth and gave her some believable flaws to work through. But she is always portrayed as perfect, her only “flaw” being that she’s “not like other girls”.
I saw Book of Life in theaters, and it was fantastic. I love how well it puts Jorge Gutierrez's art style into a 3D style, having been introduced to his work through El Tigre (side note: you'll find a few El Tigre characters in the group shot in the 2D animated segment, just before the churros gag). There are some significant parallels between Book of Life and Coco - they both feature a young man from Mexico who dreams of becoming a singer and guitarist in direct opposition to the career path their family has chosen for them and winds up traveling to the land of the dead. That being said, they both take this unusually simple premise in entirely different directions. Much like "a comic strip about a fat cat, dopey dog, and their flaky owner" could describe both Garfield and Get Fuzzy. If you liked Book of Life, keep an eye out for Jorge Gutierrez's next project, Maya and the Three. :-)
I saw this movie years before Coco so when Coco came out, I was like "hmmm that's familiar 🧐" And then I actually watched it and realized that while there were some similar themes and parallels (especially the guitar aspect), it's better to have more variety than another suburban Christmas movie. Also I can't get over the unique wooden figurine modeling 👏😫
I watched this movie with my mother, when I was five. She passed away that year. This movie reminds me of her. Even if it's a bit cheesy now, I still love it. Thanks for shedding some light on it.
I loved book of life when i was kid, I still really like it, the unique animation style and the beautiful scenery. I love the story, and characters of course there are some things that dont sit with me but its still a great movie, and the final fight in the movie was a great a good mix of comedy, fighting, and heartfelt moments.
when my sister was in collage at an art school there was going to be a premier of this movie in a theater near by. The coolest part was that the creator/director was going to be there to talk about the film and answer questions afterwards. She was lucky enough to be able to go since one of her professors managed to get seats for his students. She told me it was amazing and hearing about the production of the film, behind the scenes information and secrets from the director himself was an wonderful experience for her. She herself highly recommends this movie.
I saw Book Of Life in the cinema together with my school class in in elementary school.I had already forgotten the name, but I still remembered a little of it.🥺(Sorry if my English is a little bad, I had to use Google translator to speak certain words)

6:46 I think you underestimate kids. ALSO, I've loved this movie ever since it came out. When I watched Coco, one of my first thoughts was actually, "This music premise is kinda similar to the Book of Life" not the other way around.
I understand why you don’t get Maria’s actions when it comes with both men but trust me Ik a lot of latinas and Hispanics act just like her. Just Learing them into things she isn’t really into and get upset about it.also they are hard to get. It’s common and they call them "toxicas."
Ah yes Las toxicas. Yes they're called that but their not like that most of my feminine part of my familia are nicknamed Las toxicas. And for a good reason too. They're called that because of their rude like behavior but deep down we know that they care for us. They just like partaking in drama and chisme when they get the chance😂
personally i interpreted the bull being sad as like “i’m sorry that you sparing my life made your family angry at you” like it’s thankful but at the same time it’s sad for Manolo cause now he disappointed his family
I remember this. Watched it like 15 times in car rides when I was younger. I still love it. I haven't heard of much people who have watched it, and the people who have think it's just a weird Coco. It's a hidden gem of mid-2010's animation.
Although I love both coco and the book of life I admit I love Coco just a little bit more. Maria tries too hard to show that she’s independent. Meanwhile Imelda actually shows it through her actions. By raising her daughter by herself and opening her own shoe store. I can’t even imagine the machismo she faced. Heck Imelda even has a powerful weapon… la bota
@@Pelican07.23that’s true. I can appreciate Maria’s complexity a bit more now that I’m viewing the movie through different lenses. But I do like how Coco wasn’t afraid to really give the female characters some ugly flaws. Flaws that caused a lot of inter generational trauma. And all without demonizing the female characters.
Another great thing about this movie some people might not know is that the guy who I believe made El Tigre: The adventures of Manny Rivera, also directed this movie, which is most notable during *spoiler* candle maker explains how the land of the remembered works and tells that chakal is approaching *end spoiler* or simply in chaka's design is a homage to his previous work, plus theres one cameo of Manny Rivera's father in an animated section.
OMG YOU WATCHED BOOK OF LIFE, okay okay so I watched this movie forever ago, and when you came out with your red shoe video, I thought this would be perfect and HERE WE ARE IM SO EXCITED! Also btw I hate when people think this movie is a coco copy, it's like saying every movie about Christmas is the same 💀
I know Coco and Book of Life aren't the same movies but...I remember watching book of life first and loving it, then I watched coco and immediately forgot about it the moment I turned off the dvd. It felt more like another disney trope movie (I'm not hispanic though so I can't tell much on the holiday matter), while BoL felt...different? I think what made me enjoy BoL are the characters: they're more "human", they got flaws and all but I kinda liked them a lot more! Joachim was supposed to be the rival but he is more sympathetic than he is and still is a friend to Manolo despite all their "rivalry" so to speak, and Manolo is the one who wants to follow his dream even if it means going against everything (a bit tropey I guess, but it makes his apology song all the more powerful) And I liked that there are no real villains! Okay sure Chakal is technically a villain and he comes at the end but I never found him to be the "bad guy", he felt more of a plot device for the climax. I guess Xibalba could be the villain but even at the end La Muerte and Xibalba are still on good terms, because they can't exist without each other. I just...like this "grey factor" more, because sometimes it's not about "who's good and who's evil" but "who's likable or not". And I really liked the characters there so much more!
Jesus i loved this movie as a child ( and still love it). The first time i watched it was with my mom, it was evening and she said like that she downloaded a movie and we watched it till the night. She also loved it and we rewatched it really often. I rewatched it a month ago and it’s fantastic to me ❤️
You make some great points! However, I was much more into Xibalba and La Muerte’s story. I loved them so much and I wish there’s a second movie all about them! The humans they were talking about are ok and all, but their story didn’t grip me as much.
I remember watching this SO much when I was younger. It was one of my favorites lol. But at this point I've almost completely forgotten about it, it's great to hear about it again.
The Book of Life was one of my biggest childhood movies! Me and my friends would always have this as our go to movie when they came over for movie parties.
One thing I love about this movie is how relatable it is. Well, for me anyway. Let me explain. The way Manolo's mom is depicted reminds me of my own. And much like Manolo, my mom passed away when I was very young too. So you imagine my envy when he gets to see her again. Being a mexican american woman, she had a love for her heritage, and I just know she would have loved this movie.
this was my favourite film growing up, and i remember being angry when coco came out bc it felt like a rip off of it. I’m latin and when the book of life came out i had just immigrated from Mexico to the US and felt so isolated and misrepresented by Americans and this film made me cry just because it was like being back home and being understood. I loved it. I was only like 8 years old. also there is so much more similar between coco and the book of life than just hispanic culture lmao. but after coco came out my entire culture became that to americans. i remember on dia de los muertos the year coco came out I dressed up and like three people said “oh are you dressed as coco?” it was a horrible experience that made me revert back to that isolation I felt when i was a kid.
I watched this film when it got released and it made me fall in LOVE with Gutierrez's works. His style is so distinctive and the film is amazing. Furthermore, in Jorge's new netflix series, "Maya and the Three", actually has a lore connection to Book of Life via La Muerte and Xibalba's wedding! I highly reccomend maya and the three; i do have some issue with pacing but its also a 9 episode series so it makes sense. Plus, they make it up with good characters, amazing animation, voice acting, and formatting!
I’ve seen book of life when I was younger. I watched that movie with my parents and when I was in school my teacher would play that movie when its almost dismissal back when I was 2nd or 3rd grade. Me and my cousins loved that movie so much it was so underrated
>w< I am so glad that I got to see you review one of my favorite movies!! and I'm happy that you pointed out that both coco and the book of life are completely different and none of them are superior than the other. It's like having Halloween movies and Christmas movies. I personally think the writings was a bit wonky at times but the visuals are very nice honestly.
I remember that I used to watch The Book of Life ALL the time when I was younger. Finding a video about the movie, seemed like a miracle since I don’t really hear people talk about it, but that’s just from my experience.
I remember watching book of life when I was a kid and I FREAKING LOVED IT- Coco is great as well don’t get me wrong! But the nostalgia is really strong for me the art style was amazing and the characters were so interesting/pleasant too look at ✨
This is the second video I've seen of someone reviewing Book of Life and I really love it. I like how you went over some of the flaws as well as why it's so awesome - thank you for this video.
i remember watching this all the time when i was younger and thinking everyone knew about it, and now just recently people have been rediscovering it, and it just shocked me that literally almost no one knew about it??
For me, the best part of the movie was the two deity figures, La Muerte and Xibalba. For me, both seem pretty much like perfect depictions of god characters that you rarely see in a lot of modern stories. They could have easily made La Muerte the perfect morally good deity while Xibalba would be the obvious villainous god, kinda like what they did to Hades in Disney's Hercules. But instead, while both are opposites, both sorta see humans as beneath them and bet on their lives just for fun, and Xibalba, even though he can be cruel and cold-hearted, isn't evil, and you can kinda see where he's coming from. And when Manolo proves himself with the bull fight test, Xibalba actually respects him and even aids him. In a way, this makes him fill more rounded as a deity figure than just some generic evil dude. (also, the romance between him and La Muerte is adorable, and I love the contrast of a cute skeleton lady and a sticky tar devil boi being madly in love with each other XD)

This movie is really good and I think it was that movie that I only watched because when I was little I felt like the only one who did (I was made fun of for singing one of the songs). But it will always hold a special place in my heart.

I'm pretty sure Maria is supposed to be a "not like other girls" type of love interest xD
The feminist moments are also there because in various parts of México there's sexism even to this day, usually passed from generations of mothers, telling their daughters that they should prepare to be "good wives" when they're older, teaching them how to do all of the chores at home, but i guess it depends on the family too, seeing how the story is set years ago you could say that Maria was ahead of her time (also it may just be me but i really like her sassy moments )
Btw the twin cousins are based on the "adelitas" or "soldaderas", women that helped and fought along the soldiers on the Mexican Revolution!
Yes! If you see Mexican tv is very damn sexist and mysoginistic even now. So I do get why she was so out there.
Also maybe it was a play on many telenovelas who ship the girl off as to make the time skip happen.
My family is always telling me “porque no eres una niña normal” Bc i dont fall into their “normal girl” standards :,)

One of my complaints about Joaquin is after Maria “died” and Manolo said, “It should’ve been me,” Joaquin, instead of comforting his friend said, “Yes, it should have.” What kind of friend does that?
to be fair he loved maria, clearly upset that shit just spills out, even to people you care about.
he probably regretted saying it afterwards after seeing maria really upset about it
GUY TELLS FRIEND TO DIE, INSTANTLY REGRETS IT
Also, I hate that scene. It just leaves a pit in my stomach. What makes me even more sadder is if you look closer, Joaquin looks at Maria's comatose body sadly, then when General Posada's leaving, Joaquin glares at Manolo, in which Manolo just shows a guilty expression.

FINALLY SOMEONE GIVES THE BOOK OF LIFE ATTENTION.
Looks at other set of gods
Cause life and death can’t do much. They take care of people in the afterlife. That’s why the fact he interfered with the bet was the more damning.
I thought they made it clear what they are supposed to do. The candlemaker handles the life and death itself while La Muerte and Xilbaba are caretakers of the afterlife. I don't think they are rulers of life and death itself, although being gods they probably have the power.

the apology song is really beautiful, its legit just Monolo apologizing to a bull- for the bloodshed, the war, the death, and asking for forgiveness for all the deaths- in the song he says ‘And all the thousands before you, I owe you an apology and one long overdue.’ As, despite being only seen as ruthless monsters, bulls still have a will to live, they don’t wanna die. And, really bad fact, bulls don’t get angry at the color red- the capes are only red so people don’t see the blood of the animal- as ramming into walls could make their heads bleed.

Omg one of my favorite movies 😭 so underrated 🥺🥺💕
Also in defending of Maria, I feel the historical time of the movie taking place many girls didn't have the privilege to go off and learn about things she did.
I agree 😁
honey , i agree with you
Also this movie came out during the NLOG 2010 era, so while the historical setting of the movie is important, the movie itself could have felt like a product of its time in that regard.
"ever HEARD of the book of life?"
BRUH I REMEMBER WATCHING IT WHEN IT CAME OUT! IT'S SUCH A BANGER
I also believe (being Hispanic myself) that people compare it because of the themes of relationships and families. Family is such an integral part of Mexican/Central American culture, it's very hard to make an authentic story without addressing it
But both movies are Mexicans not Central American.
@@i.cs.z Mexico is in North America not Central America
@KeybladeMaster64 yes you are right but in the eyes of mexicans/Latinos the people from central and south America are still one of them. I'm saying this as a Mexican. Also both south/central america and Mexico celebrate a derivative of the day of the dead. This is actually similar to how Americans view the British. Similar language and culture but with its differences. Also Mexico is not part of north America. It once was but not anymore. Y do youthink the migration police and borders exist.

omg same!! i’m not hispanic but it was my favorite movie as a kid! i would watch it like 5 times everyday from the DVD disk

If only they made the second movie, then we could get a whole movie with Joaquin as the mane character and his emotional problems
I don’t think they ever officially canceled it. I heard elsewhere that there are simply other things being worked on. But I do still agree with you.
The thing that peeves me off the most is when people say Book of Life copied Coco, even though it came out *before* Coco. Like... huh??
I loved this movie when I was younger the story was really beautiful and the gods were my favourite characters.
CHURROS!” *slince* “fROSTED CHURROS!”
It was literally a one off line with an unnamed character but still peak comedy in my eyes
ME TOO 😂
I STILL SAY IT TO THIS DAY WHEN I SEE CHURROS
CHURROS CHURROS 😳 FROSTED CHURROS

The Book Of Life was the first movie, that I brought copies of and gave away for Christmas. I loved the way the story was told & I love all the color.
Manolo*
I didn’t even realize that it’s been years since I watched the movie and now I realize that’s gross behavior
@arianna yeah I would have loved to see Maria’s character fleshed out more so we can understand more of her character motivations
@arianna That would be an amazing sequel
I saw this movie years before Coco so when Coco came out, I was like "hmmm that's familiar 🧐"
And then I actually watched it and realized that while there were some similar themes and parallels (especially the guitar aspect), it's better to have more variety than another suburban Christmas movie.

when my sister was in collage at an art school there was going to be a premier of this movie in a theater near by. Although I love both coco and the book of life I admit I love Coco just a little bit more. Maria tries too hard to show that she’s independent. Meanwhile Imelda actually shows it through her actions. @@Pelican07.23that’s true. I can appreciate Maria’s complexity a bit more now that I’m viewing the movie through different lenses.
I really like Joaquin alot to I just feel like he deserved Maria..

You make some great points! However, I was much more into Xibalba and La Muerte’s story. I loved them so much and I wish there’s a second movie all about them! The humans they were talking about are ok and all, but their story didn’t grip me as much.
A movie I grew up with and is SUPER underrated!
I remember watching this SO much when I was younger. It was one of my favorites lol. But at this point I've almost completely forgotten about it, it's great to hear about it again.
The Book of Life was one of my biggest childhood movies! Me and my friends would always have this as our go to movie when they came over for movie parties.
the book of life is one of my favourites! the character, storyline and songs are all absolutely amazing!
Even better MANOLO AND MARIA ARE REINCARNATIONS OF ZATS AND MAYA!!!
I’ve seen book of life when I was younger. I watched that movie with my parents and when I was in school my teacher would play that movie when its almost dismissal back when I was 2nd or 3rd grade. Me and my cousins loved that movie so much it was so underrated
Yes! I totally loved this when I was younger!
"Have you ever heard of the book of life"
"yes"
"anyway end of video thank you all for watching...Goodbye"
I loved book of life! The wooden style was amazing and the story was great!
Bro I hade a crush on Maria so much, she’s my favorite character 🥰
I am still absolutely IN LOVE with La muerte's design😍!
Loved the book of life when it came out, I watched it so many times. The story and animations were really nice
>w< I am so glad that I got to see you review one of my favorite movies!! and I'm happy that you pointed out that both coco and the book of life are completely different and none of them are superior than the other. It's like having Halloween movies and Christmas movies. I personally think the writings was a bit wonky at times but the visuals are very nice honestly.
ALL! Of your “Have you ever seen this movie?” These are all literally all of my like childhood movies! I love it! ❤😭
I watched it when it came out, it was good but it wasn’t really known, so I’m glad that people are starting to talk about it ✨
I remember that I used to watch The Book of Life ALL the time when I was younger. Finding a video about the movie, seemed like a miracle since I don’t really hear people talk about it, but that’s just from my experience.
I remember watching book of life when I was a kid and I FREAKING LOVED IT-
Coco is great as well don’t get me wrong! But the nostalgia is really strong for me the art style was amazing and the characters were so interesting/pleasant too look at ✨
AH YES NOSTALGIA JEIGIGXIYDSGKSYEOEYKKTSTISULSULSRSTKEITATWSHDFVXQY5MQEYJSTS47ADYO
finally a Review that treats this movie with the respect it deserved
This is the second video I've seen of someone reviewing Book of Life and I really love it. I like how you went over some of the flaws as well as why it's so awesome - thank you for this video.
That was part of my childhood and I still cry watching it cause it’s so beautiful
I'm glad my mom let me and my siblings watch this when its released, it's really a great movie TBH
I've always loved this movie, and I'm so glad to hear someone talking about it!
i remember watching this all the time when i was younger and thinking everyone knew about it, and now just recently people have been rediscovering it, and it just shocked me that literally almost no one knew about it??
I watched this film when I was younger and I loved it! Seen it hundreds of times and it’s honestly one of my favourite animated movies.
