    LTT's Linus: I've invested a ton of money into the new LTT Labs! Just replacing the lights in the building will cost us $20k!
    GN's Steve: We purchased a fan testing machine, which might even be Apple's old testing machine at a significant investment!
    JTC's Jay: Here's a paper towel dispenser, we're going to blow the fan at it. Maybe buy a smoke machine one day...anyways, I digress.

      The reason I don't like RGB. Is some RGB programs can rob the computer of performance as much as 10 percent. One time I tried RGB and my computer was having random shut downs which is not good for music making. Had to return all the RGB and no more issues. I would rather have a sleeper than eye candy. I'm going to build a am4/AMD this fall. My first build. 🤣 I just realized AMD is a letter away from being the AND company.

      Also come with better support and warranty. Even if these bearings turn out better than SSO2s later down the road, Noctua will literally respond within a day and ship you new fans, internationally. ASUS support can be impossible to reach. If you don't care about that though, it's still really hard to justify since the Arctic P12 PWM PSTs exist and have been lowkey kicking everyone's ass for years in the value department.

  • @jameslmathieson
    @jameslmathieson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    FYI: A maglev bearing will always be slightly off center when not correctly powered. It needs power for the maglev to engage and center the rotor. Without power, it's just resting on its crash bushings. Once they're powered up, removing power engages a regenerative mode to power the bearing from the angular momentum of the rotor to keep it from crashing into the bushings at full speed. That's what the weird noise and twitching fans was about.

    • @--_DJ_--
      @--_DJ_-- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is that true for small bearings like you would find in a PC fan? I find it hard to believe it isn't just permanent magnets doing their thing all the time, but I have no actual knowledge on the subject to base that belief on.

      @jameslmathieson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@--_DJ_-- Maglev bearings always have to use active electromagnets, not permanent magnets. The polarities have to constantly switch as the rotor turns and implement a control loop to keep the rotor centered and floating.

    The reason the air seems to go further through a radiator, is because you are moving the same volume of air but through a smaller aperture (because of the fins taking up space directly in front of the fan). This has the effect of speeding up the air slightly, which makes it travel further.
    Basic fluid dynamics through pipes, etc. Push the same volume of air/water through a smaller pipe with the same initial pressure, and it travels faster.

    Watching your fan videos is the reason I know what fans to buy for my pc and what are gonna be the best for what I need

    Upvote just for watching Jay getting his finger caught in the fan. It's like Linus dropping expensive stuff at this point. :D

    My next build is going to be completely free of leds, but it feels like now that all the best parts always have them, and if you want to get rid of leds, you have to go for a lower performance/quality item.

    You should buy miniature airport windsock you can use to see how well the fans work from various distances, that'd be a nice way to do it instead of using paper towels.

    As one SNL character would say after hearing the price: "GOOD LAWD that's a lotta money!"

    The reason why adding fans makes the noise floor louder is that the fans all move the air in the same way at the same speed and have the same motor hum and other mechanical noises. So you get constructive interference of the sound waves each fan produces. Which makes the combined noise louder

    Jay reminds me of my uncle. He'd ask for me to visit him in his garage and then goofily show me a bunch of his new tools and toys.

    Noctua comes with fan splitter on CPU coolers that I have purchased. Also resistors to reduce fan speed/noise. Never used those though.

    I like RGB fans! They are my "Mood Rings" of the 21st Century. I set them to refkect how I am feeling on any given day. Jay sank my Battleship...

    I love RGB i switch between static colours dependant on my mood but it's good to see variety for those who don't like it
