      Made the same mistake.
      I kept going to "BEST" and "MUST HAVE RGB" ...
      (that last one was a huge mistake)
      What I found, esspecially with mice, is they that it doesn't matter which tier they are, the buttons will die at the same rate.
      So it's better to just buy a fovorite from the Flawless mice list for as cheap as possible and sticking with that.

    Unfortunately, my line of work actually requires both high end CPUs and GPUs, so I'm constantly upgrading every generation to shave up to 20 min off hardware simulation/compile time in some cases. The upside is that when you work from home, that high end gaming rig can be written off as a business expense.

      Ditto. Last build was a 4790k and it carried me as far as it possibly could until it just couldn't do enough single-core performance for what I needed. Replaced it with a 5950x. I don't have the free time to be tinkering all the time on a faster upgrade cycles. There is also the issue of e-waste, I also don't need a bunch of parts lying around, and resell is a hassle to me. I do demote the replaced system to HTPC duty. Notably, I've had a CLC run fine for 10 years, and Corsair replaced some lifetime warranty ram 7-8 years in.

    The thing you also have to remember though is that your use case may change with time - and technology advances with time. Personally, I'd rather spend $400-600 more now and over-spec knowing that the system I'm building will fill my needs for 6-8 years, versus spend less and have to rebuild a new system in 2-4 years.

      This is what drove my purchasing decisions as well
      I had a 6 core CPU previously, and 16gb of RAM got long in the tooth for me.
      Upgrading to an 8 core and 32gb would've been fine for most of my uses, but I'd have to nit-pick a year sooner.

      I have three questions I ask my customers when they come to me to custom build a system:
      1) How much are you willing to spend?
      2) What are you going to use this system for, right now?
      3) What are you going to use this system for, 5 years from now?
      All three questions are self-explanatory for any system builder and the answers are essential to building a system that is balanced. With the advances in technology, the 5 year period has shrunk to 3 years but the principle still applies.

      It's a tricky question lately. As the high end of yesterday isn't as good as what buying high end meant at some point. You could grab an i7 2nd Gen and still be good when 6th Gen came out. Now if we take ryzen first Gen and ryzen 5th Gen, the gap is insane. Same for the latest Intel solution, they destroy even the 7700k which was the gaming king.
      Gpu scale differently, but could we see a big jump this fall? It's a possibility that shouldn't be excluded either. And I tell you that still using a gtx1080 I got as a gift, but that premium card from yesterday could be replaced by an rx6600 for 1080p gaming, which is the entry point of mid range cards on amd side.

    • @ricky4673
      @ricky4673 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, buying the 1080 back in the day. Didn't matter what the rest of your computer was. I would say it was the best buy for the longest lasting or rather, relevent piece of graphics hardware ever. produced. Perhaps a 4870k could be a better buy but it's a different category. I have a 4870 that can run any game I threw at it. Even now. The single core performance on that chip was absurd for the price.

  • @deathVIAavatar
    @deathVIAavatar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    As someone who never truly has extra money to build new PCs, when I think about how much I may need to save for one, I always factor in what I'd actually use the PC for. I try to be practical because I may not do what my "dream PC" could do. Rather, I think about where I should start with it, and if I can upgrade it to the point of a dream build if needed. I plan it for options, but options as a beginner in whatever I want to explore. If I was building a rig for professional use, I'd absolutely spec it for that use, but that's not what I'd be using it for out of the gate. Thinking ahead for what you are gonna use it for will absolutely save you money upfront. TL;DR - Save your money for inflation and emergencies and leave your options open for down-the-road upgrades.

    Good advice that applies to any hobby, like hot-rods. I've built some drivetrains in my head looking at parts catalogs and realized that doing a dial-a-horsepower with a credit card doesn't make for a viable street machine. Balance, the key word which not only saves cash but also makes for an enjoyable machine that will impress when you take it out for a cruise.

    • @flozam5468
      @flozam5468 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Couldn't agree more bud... As a skilled technician in the automotive industry, i see the simple perfection of balance and efficiency overlooked to often. And am constantly reminded that spec'ing out a passenger vehicle in the hopes of creating a super car, is mostly void of the concept initially aimed for. I spent thousands on an R34 skyline, constantly chasing my tail trying to balance each upgrade. Everytime i would make an improvement to one area, it would show the weakness of another. In the end i was left missing what the engineers at nissan had intended and was left feeling the sobering words of my mentor ringing in my ear. (Mechanic/engineer/boss)- "why not just buy a Porsche?".….
      On the other hand, there's a satisfying feeling from building something tuned to the task, as I've found with building PC's... A few systems ago. I built an x79 rig with an e5-1680v2 (oc@4.5ghz), custom bios with nvme support (via pcie expansion), 32gb Ram(ddr3@2133mhz cl9)and a 5700xt Strix on a custom vertical mount, that had 40mm fans with 3d printed aero to cool the nvme located behind. An R5 case with 240mm a.i.o and a total of 10 fans (including 2x140mm ek vardar furious 2400rpm high performance fans - that i massively over did it in terms of cooling performance to jet engine thrust) and enough RGB to embarrass the most hardcore rave. All powered by a Corsair hx1200 psu.
      It was by far the most over kill, out dated and impressively tuned machine I've ever built. And I've built so many machines...
      But at the time (ryzen 2700x/intel 9900k period) it held its own and provided a consistently capable experience.
      But building PC's is much cheaper than building hotrods...
      Just not quite as fun/scary to drag race...

    Ever since the AMD Athlon 64 days I've always aimed at the lower end of "high tier" because I find this will get you a decent system for the price - sure you'll have to upgrade faster but by the time you upgrade the previous top spec system is (at best) at the lower end of high tier and both systems probably wouldn't have cost you the price of the new one when you got the first system, so now you have 2 systems instead of one and possibly have saved money or got extras.

    I think getting a decent PSU is an important decision. I used to work at a computer electronics store and whenever someone came in for a build, they would always choose a bottom of the barrel PSU that almost doesn't meet the requirements of the system. I would always recommend a decent PSU that can also grow with your system along with the case. I'm not saying get a 1000watt PSU but somewhere around 700-800watt and an 80+ bronze rating at least to save money. The PSUs my clients were choosing are the ones that come without a box and wrapped in plastic. Those are fine for maybe an office computer.

      You also can think of it like this, do you like a game better at 1440p med settings or at 1080p max🤷‍♂️ or something like that, you also have to think about if you want to have lower settings and higher fps or higher settings and lower fps🤷‍♂️ I personly can not game at 70 fps or below it just hurts to my eyes. You also have to put the different screens in mind one costs more than the other. Hope this comment helped you awser youre question.

    I probably seriously overspecced my new tower last year when I built it, going a 5950X, a 1Kw PSU and 64GB of RAM. Until I starting playing with 3D and recoding my entire media library to HEVC to make a HUGE space saving on the plex server. Pretty sure that those parts have absolutely paid for themselves in the saved time just on the encoding alone. And going an overkill PSU at the time meant I could just drop in the 3090ti I bought this tax time straight in and know that the PC could cope.
    Is it overkill for what I want? Sure. I don't game on it at all really, I play on PS5 for most of my gaming. But those other tasks, it does them great, it does them fast. And I know it's gonna run brilliantly for the next 5 or 6 years until I get the urge to upgrade it. My last tower went 12 years before I built this new one. All of it was nice to haves, but I had the spare money to spend on the project.

I downloaded Apex Legends so that I could take it for a spin and check temps, make sure everything was working correctly etc. Next thing I knew 2.5 hours had gone by and I had completely forgotten that I was testing out a 6-8 year old system. I was really surprised and impressed by the level of performance. It was hitting 100-120 fps average 1080p Apex Legends. I enjoyed myself so much that I decided to leave the PC hooked up and game on it for a while, reminded me of when I first got back in to PC gaming and was happy if I could just average 60 fps 1080p. Funny how perception can change so dramatically as your mind adapts to your current circumstance.

    Just my two cents on the RAM. I have 32 gigs of RAM in my system and i can only have 2-3 Photoshop documents open with light room in the background before I max my ram. Sometimes it’s not all about wether you need it or not sometimes it’s just a ease of use so I don’t have to close out those tab because I may not be done with that photo or document but I don’t want to work on it at that moment.

    I've been building PC's as a pastime hobby since I was a kid, so probably for 15-18 years now, and I help people build PC's all the time.
    Something I always ask is "What are you going to do with your PC" followed by a budget, and go on from there.
    (If they play any games -> Which games -> Which display size/type they prefer -> etc.)
    When it comes to picking components is either selecting higher-end components from a previous generation, or lower-end components from a current generation.
    I most often pick the latter. This is to make upgrades further down the line easier if it becomes relevant, with less expenditure on overhauling the system.
    (Buying a new motherboard to fit a new CPU, for example.)
    I just recently upgraded from a Ryzen 5 2600 -> 5600X. All I needed was a BIOS update and I was set.
    A tip is to avoid going overkill, or cheaping out on any particular components. Try balancing the budget on the parts as they are needed. Also, never cheap out on a power supply, it's a seriously bad idea...🙄

      I changed it manually to a fixed 4,2Ghz@1.1V on all cores and suddenly my CPU not only >30°C cooler, but also uses 30W less power, while loosing 10-15% singlecore performance. This is something I always have to explain to people when I'm helping them build their PCs... or when they are bragging and trying to ruin the sales of other people in FB groups. Idk about other places, but here in Colombia, in every PC Building group you would always find that subgroup of people who claimed "The only ones who use AMD are those who can't afford an Intel CPU" and would always try to push that idea even when AMD was obliterating Intel. You could see them claiming that Intel has the fastest gaming CPU (i9 9900K iirc). Below I9's everything was dominated by AMD, but they would always start an argument and make fun at people who used Ryzen 5 or Core i5 because they were poor ands thus their opinions didn't matter and that the 5% more performance in games they got was worth those extra 400USD (which was the equivalent to 1.5 minimum wages here back then).
    After a while we were able to ban them from those groups. But the point is that there are always STUPID people who just like to spend more for nothing, just to brag. Back then I struggled to simply get a RX 5500 XT (not the smartest purchase, but given the way import taxes work here, it actually made sense). Right now I can easily get a top of the line system in 2-3 months but I'm still using a ryzen 5 5600 (Upgraded from a R5 2600 when the 5600 went under 200USD), a RX 6600 XT, 16GB of RAM (planning on upgrading to 32GB, 16GB are sometimes not doing it when I'm testing some apps I'm developing for android). I don't need more than that. I'm underutilizing my GPU except when I play Ark: Survival Evolved. If it wasn't for that game I would probably still be using my old GPU. I don't get anything by moving to Ryzen 7 or 9 right now as the more CPU-demanding tasks I'm performing (compiling code) would just take like 10s less if I upgraded, which is nothing.

    Based on the title, I expected a slightly different direction. I've been using halo-tier motherboards for several generations, but the last two ASUS boards have given me so many weird problems, that a more commonly sold model would likely give me a better experience, because they are better tested and they receive more BIOS bug fixes.
    I'm still being stubborn so far, but reliability is crap for my current Crosshair VIII Extreme. Ethernet randomly disconnects, requiring a reboot. After a BIOS update the ethernet disappeared for several days. The OLED display almost never works, M.2 randomly vanishes when run on PCI-e 4.0, etc. etc.

    Long, long ago, I read an article or opinion piece in a computer magazine (remember when that was a thing?). It pointed out that if you buy more powerful gear, you could hold onto it longer without upgrading, thus saving money. However, if you bought the absolute latest and greatest thing, you were paying a big premium, plus you had to deal with early adopter headaches.
    Thus, it argued that you were better off buying stuff that was one step down from the top. That gave you headroom for future-proofing without the early adopter premium or stability headaches.
    If you play Civilization on "huge" maps, then late in the game, there are tons of units, tons cities, each with tons of buildings, and yes, you absolutely benefit from having lots of RAM and lots of cores. I can verify this as I play on huge maps and tend to take my sweet time reaching victory (science victories just take more turns). On the other hand, if you play on smaller maps and go for military victories (e.g. domination), then you can absolutely get away with less.
    But as I said, if you play on a huge map and reach a high turn count, a weaker system will be brought to its knees, and a higher power GPU isn't really very important. Even though I have an RTX 3080, I generally run it at 20 FPS so that the fans are quieter and my computer produces less heat. Yes, scrolling is buttery smooth if I don't limit the frame rate, but it just doesn't matter for a turn-based strategy game.
    BTW, if you play on huge maps, you'll also benefit from faster storage, at least when loading a game.

    • @ArmadaOne
      @ArmadaOne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I play Civilization VI a lot and also mod the game and on a i5-9600KF @ 5.2 GHz and a i7-8086K @ 5.3 GHz with 32 GB DDR4-3200 once you reach turn 100 it takes over a minute to calculate each turn so the game really becomes super CPU intensive on big maps with a lot of civilizations.
      I'm willing to bet that even if you had a 13900KS running at 6 GHz per core or a Ryzen 9 7950X running at 6 GHz per core with DDR5 6400 memory it would still take way over 30 seconds per turn.
      You practically need an optical quantum super computer to run Civilization VI to even reach turn 200.
      I don't know if this is because the AI is just that complex or because the game is just really badly made although I'm betting it's the latter since older Civilization games had pretty advanced AI engines as well as do many other 4X games and none even come close to using this much CPU and there are tons of bugs in the game.

    I'll probably go for the next gen 3D vcache CPU when it appears, by then DDR5 should be priced properly and we know better how power inefficient the new nVidia GPU is, if AMD is the better choice. At most going for 4070 equivalent GPU to avoid the "high end GPU price tax" so I can just upgrade the card more often. Ideally going small form factor, but that may not be up to me if next gen GPU requires a nuclear power plant to run. Maybe just give next gen GPU a miss until power efficiency is a focus again.

      The price of DDR5 isn't the problem it's the huge latency's. In another year or two it will be or should be near what DDR4 was/is when it came out. High end low latency DDR4 is pretty much the same if not better than most all DDR5 UNLESS there's some niche reason you absolutely need DDR5. I plan on getting the new 13th gen and I didn't bother getting a DDR5 mobo because most latency's are like 30-36+ which is silly. Your channel helped me out a TON!

    I went for the best I could find:

    Unfortunately, although Asus mobo specs appeared compatible with my memory, I’ve run into dram post fails on soft reboots and EVEN windows crashing with too many explorer, Firefox, or chrome tabs open- all because I didn’t realize 4266 does not play well with my mobo (and I bought two sets of identical 2x16gb which is a no-no). I ruled out physical/seating errors (A/B lanes too), memtest86 came back with perfect results.
    It’s terrible because it’s affecting my other pristine parts- I thought best is better!
    SO this video TOTALLY resonated with my own circumstances. 🥹🥹

My dad use to be a great source of info when he was in the military but since retirement he's no longer around the computer geniuses so we are both flying blind when it comes to what would make a good gaming PC or good PC in general.

    There's one small caveat to this. If you are using accessibility equipment like eye tracking technology and specialized controllers with their own programming you are going to need more CPU and more GPU power. It's unfortunate but none of it is optimized yet and just tanks performance

    Nice, the PC Jay described as a best current use case computer matches the one I bought this spring. I7 12000, 3070 TI, 32 GB RAM, 240mm AIO. I am on a five year upgrade plan myself - which is to say I buy myself a custom build PC every five years and rotate through my families' computers/laptops on a similar upgrade schedule. A channel like this helps me keep informed and make good buying decisions based upon quality and price. Maybe when it is my turn, I will build my next PC myself and save a lot more money.

    My rig consists of a 12600k and a 3080 with 32GB of ram., this is my first build and I’m really happy with it. Sometimes I think I should’ve went with a 12700k but the 12600k works just fine.

      About the same, 3080-3700X-32g...it go gud. Almost went for 3090 but even at msrp, too much money for too little improvement (10-20 fps in most benchmarks). I still think the original 3080 is the Goldilocks card.

    4 year build project. First config: i5-9600k, 16GB 3000 CL15, RX580 8GB. Then upgraded memory to 32 GB 3200 CL16. 3 weeks ago bought XFX SWFT RX 6800 XT. Using 32" 1440p 144Hz curved panel. Now i'm done, until "NextGen" becomes affordable.
    Love how i use less energy in rocket league locked at 144fps, unlike before, i barely reached 144.

    Ryzen 5 5600X and GTX 1650 Super work’s beautiful for me. I use my PC like a console on a 4K TV and can even get some games to play in 4K HDR with no issue. Newest game I have, F1 22, plays at 90-120 FPS in 1080p upscaled to full screen on my TV. I’m in no rush to upgrade my GPU right now.

    @JayzTwoCents, we do pre-construction 3d modeling and coordination at the firm I work for and we do not use any of the GPUs put out for gaming in our systems. They are all Quadros. A workstation geared towards the type of modeling we do is a completely different animal compared to a gaming rig for sure. Perhaps a video build of the most balanced/compatible components for a gaming system for the most stable experience is warranted? I mean, it's nice to see all the expensive hot-rod parts and all but what about a build that has components that compliment one another in compatibility that result in a better performance experience?

    Jay, you build what ever you want. Its O.k.. I tune in to see the crazy overkill systems you put together. They aren't practical, but they are fun!

    Making mistakes is not always a bad thing. One of my early PCs got bricked because I installed incompatible SIMMs. It was probably 1MB or something. So I pulled the mobo and desoldered the battery and that allowed the BIOS to reset. What did I learn? Don't try incompatible memory and also, short the battery, don't desolder it. I learned to think more before doing things and to step back and think about the "fix" I plan to do. It was very helpful to screw this up early on when the consequences were small.

    Good luck with the renovations Jay.
    I completely agree with you on how complicated things have gotten with the parts. I had not built a PC since 2000 until I decided to build a new one to replace my latest computer. (I'm not a gamer and I went over to Mac when they moved from OS 9 to OS X, which is based on NextStep which is based on a type of UNIX called BSD. I liked the interface and the fact that if anything was wrong I could go to the command line and fix things as I was familiar with UNIX through my work.) Buying a Mac was very easy as it was a matter of choosing the type of machine (laptop or desktop, size of screen, etc), choosing the level of processor (i3, i5, or i7) and then choosing the amount of RAM and storage. But with the move to their custom ARM processors Apple isn't offering machines that meet my needs without spending much more than I want.
    When I started looking at buying the parts for my own machine again the choices were overwhelming, especially with graphics cards. It took me a while to get back up to speed so that I could order everything. I found your channel during this time and bought a couple of items, a CPU cooler and power supply, based on your recommendations so thank you. There's no need for all of this confusion, especially when parts with a lower model number outperform parts with a higher model number. I can imagine someone with no experience in computers feeling very intimidated when going computer shopping and having all of these part numbers thrown at them. I built my computer approximately a month ago. It took a few weeks of trying various Linux distributions to find one that is satisfactory enough for now so that I may get on with my work. I'm hoping that most of my dissatisfaction is coming from changing operating systems and will go away with time.

    The first step in designing your pc should always be defining the use. in car terms, an economy car (surf the internet), a family hauler (multi-use, light gaming), a sports car(heavy gaming), a utility vehicle (heavy use), a Ferrari (all about image) or a tractor trailer combination (servers). Then chose your CPU, graphics, storage around your use.

    When I build systems, I build them for longevity. I don't upgrade very often because what I build doesn't require an upgrade in the short term. My current computer is 10 years old and is rock solid. I upgraded the cooler to a Noctua tower cooler (was using the stock fan at the time), upgraded the hard drives (one "failed" , the other ran out of space), and the video card (the original one died), added a PCIe USB ports (I needed a USB C port). I already spec'd out new parts for my next build. I'm going to start buying parts next month. I'm recovering from c19 and I need time to regain my bearings.
